A delightful Caribbean-set romp about an ambitious designer of apocalyptic video games with a strategy for (almost) everything who discovers what happens when her best-laid plans go off course . . .
Sloane Cooper is up for her dream job as a designer for a top video game company. Not only is it illegal to discuss someone's personal life in an interview, that was the first question.
Not only is that mandate on her life unethical, it's completely misogynistic.
As a woman in STEM, this takes it too far.

A flirty, feel good vacation romance between Sloane, a South Asian American female video game designer recently dumped and Charlie, her hot neighbor who is also fresh off a breakup. When he proposes Sloane accompany him on a vacation for two to Turks and Caicos he had planned to go on with his former girlfriend, the two find themselves slowly falling in love while Sloane works on a designing a game to win a new job and finds out she's competing with her ex. I liked but didn't love this one. It was good on audio and a quick, light-hearted read. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

I'm disappointed. This started off fun, but is too crass for me at times, and I'm not even talking about the sex scenes where I just skim them because I'm don't care to read about or watch others having sex. Plus there is a lot of drinking and I don't find drunk people funny ever. However, most of that stuff didn't happen before they made it to their holiday destination. But in the first part of the book, the interview scene was poorly crafted; even if the men were misogynistic, it is completely illegal to do what they did and they'd have been far more careful in what they said to avoid a lawsuit given the bad publicity that would bring them. They'd have been more likely to comb her social media to find out or simply say they found a better candidate without saying that they didn't want women. Also, that showed no self-respect on Sloane's part.
However, I was willing to let that interview go to see how the story went since I decided that was a small part. Sadly, it wasn't good enough to compensate for the inane interview scene, the crass bits and the sex scenes.

What started strong became really clunky by the end, but overall this was a good read and felt stronger than the author’s debut. I appreciated the gamer subplot but think it could’ve been handled more impactfully (and not just with a neat bow in the epilogue).

In a Not So Perfect World was a forced proximity, slow burn, set in a beautiful tropical destination. With forging a friendship and low angst mixed together, this book was so easy to read. I adored how short the chapters were and that I was able to sneak in a few pages here and there. In a Not So Perfect World definitely checks all the boxes for what you would want to bring as a beach read!
Sloane and Charlie’s meet cute in the bar was absolutely adorable! And when she found out he was her hot neighbor, I couldn’t stop smiling. So when Charlie propositioned Sloane to go on an inclusive trip to Turks and Caicos, I was shouting at her to say yes. He was in desperate need to make his ex jealous. And she needed to work on a project for her dream job. Yet paradise has a way of painting what could be just friendship, into something so much more.
I loved Charlie, he was someone who was so easy to like. Even while he was struggling and hurt from his past breakup. I just loved how he made things effortlessly fun and seemed to have this light that radiated happiness outwards. Plus he had the best t-shirts! We only got this story in Sloane’s voice, yet I had no problem piecing together exactly who Charlie was. He was kind, heartfelt, and seemed like someone you could easily be friends with. With Sloane and her high walls, I was cheering for Charlie to knock them down every step of the way.
Charlie tried his best to earn Sloane’s trust. She kept so much of herself hidden. Not only her childhood trauma, but that she was still struggling from a breakup too. So Sloane was definitely a multifaceted character. I loved her drive and that she was reaching for the stars to accomplish her dream, to work at the video game company. Even if the work space seemed as though it could be toxic. Yet I did struggle with her, since she got in the way of her happiness with Charlie. From time to time. I just wanted to smoosh them together, tell Sloane it would all be okay, and have them kiss and be together forever please!
Sloane and Charlie had this slow burn romance simmering between them. Charlie was getting over his heartache, Sloane too. And Sloane’s whole focus was on the path to her dream job. Yet feelings kept creeping in from time to time. Especially when alcohol was involved. So what felt like friendship formed, and then more came tumbling in too. Also, while there were side characters that were easy to like, the shining star was definitely Finn! He was Sloane’s dog. He was so adorable, and I wish he could have gone on the vacation with them. He stole the show every single time that he was on the page!
So with water balloon fights, scavenger hunts, Kix and Fruity Pebbles, and more, this book took us on an adventure. While there was some steam on the pages, I’d categorize it as lower on the heat scale. And that happily for now ending will leave readers smiling. So if you’re looking for a book to bring to the beach this summer, this may just be your book!

This is a sweet, fun read. A sort-of-friends-to-lovers romance with fake relationship/forced proximity vibes, it’s fun and entertaining with likeable characters and a slow-burning love story.
Sloane is a doomsday prepping gamer who is in the running for her dream job as a designer at a hugely successful video game company. With promises to her potential new bosses to remain single and without outside entanglements, she is sent away to design a new game within a week as part of the final part of her interview.
And then Charlie comes along. After an unexpected meet-cute, Charlie and Sloane learn that they are neighbours, and they’re about to get a whole lot closer when Charlie invites Sloane along on a tropical island holiday that he had booked for him and his ex-girlfriend. He wants to make her jealous, and asks Sloane to pose as his girlfriend for the week. Sloane figures she can use the week to design and build her game, plus she gets a holiday, so she agrees, and the two near-strangers/almost-friends head off for a week in a romantic resort.
This book is full of fun, chemistry-filled moments as Charlie and Sloane spend time together, laugh, play, and get to know each other. There are some really fun and sweet moments, and you can see behind the scenes that feelings are developing, and there’s a fantastic slow burn as they wrestle with their growing feelings for each other.
But Charlie is fresh off a break-up, and Sloane is still burned from her last relationship. Then there’s the general turmoil of her life at present, her interfering, demanding mother, and the stress of building her game, getting her dream job, and the terms of employment that she agreed to.
There’s a lot to overcome, and there is some drama to wade through before these two can get their HEA. I found it a bit frustrating, and wanted to give them both a push, but the romance does come - sweet, sexy and heartfelt - along with some character growth for both of them, and the story ends really nicely.
This is a smart and fun read. A bit lighter on the romance than I usually prefer, but I enjoyed it.

Eh this was just ok. I think there are people who will love this but that’s not me. I felt the main characters had no chemistry, the story felt bland and I grew bored halfway through. These two characters also have no business being in a relationship with anyone until they put some emotional distance between themselves and their exes.
Let’s also be clear, any interview question that asks about your personal life is ILLEGAL. No company in their right mind would ever ask such personal, inappropriate , and disrespectful questions to an interviewee. If so, they should sue and they would win.

This is the third book I have read where one person subs in for another on a would be romantic getaway/ honeymoon. And I'm discovering I love this trope.
Highly recommend this book of you loved the Unhoneymooners and How to Honeymoon alone.
This book far exceeded my expectations.

I recommend for something light hearted, has summer vibes, and to not be taken seriously. I had a good time with the concepts of this book knowing it wasn’t real (regarding the stupid, workplace men) and just focused on the dynamic of Sloan and Charlie.

A sweet and exciting rom com story. Sloane Cooper is our heroine. She is still spinning from a surprise breakup and struggling to pay her bills as she gave up her work to put all of her efforts into landing a dream job as a game designer. When her best friend dares her to meet a man in a bar, she finds out later that they are neighbors. Better yet, he is reeling from his own break up and needs a stand in for a trip he has planned. Should Sloane take a leap of faith? Better then your typical story, fun, thoughtful and believable! If this was a netflix rom com, i would eat it right up! (but for real, @netflix - can you do it pls).
first wanna send a big thank you to harper perrenial / net galley for this arc!
I needed a quick and lighter romance read to break up some of my recent reads and i’m glad i chose this one! i really liked both of the main characters (hellooooo charlie) and their banter felt very realistic to me. i honestly just had ton of fun reading their convos and living through their experience of this vacay in turks & caicos and the people they meet there.
the thought process of sloane throughout the book also felt very real in a lot of ways! the struggles she faced in the career world of game design felt (unfortunately) real not only for that field, but for tons of women in the workplace.
the story didn’t blow me away, but the way it felt real (to me at least) made me enjoy it even more. there were some things that i felt like i needed more to connect with - for example, sloane’s family losing their house and all of their belongings in the flood. there wasn’t enough there for me to feel like it fully made sense in the story? almost like we needed more or just needed it taken out completely. but i did love the way the ending all came together.
overall - this was a good, quick read. would highly recommend for the perfect beach/vacay read! book is out now so go grab yourself a copy ✨

I loved this book. Neely Tubati Alexander writes such great romance books that really hit home with me. I really enjoyed this one about neighbors who go on a trip to make their exes jealous and end up falling for each other. Charlie was true perfection as a book boyfriend and I loved Sloane as the main character as she tries to get her dream job and the dream boyfriend. Both of them felt so authentic and had relatable life issues. This is definitely a fun read for the upcoming summer days and I highly recommend checking out LOVE BUZZ by this author as well!

Sloane is always ready. She carries an emergency kit with her at all times. Having survived a hoouse flood when she was younger, she is prepared! Obsessed with being a video game designer, her dream of working at Catapult (reminded me of Square Enix) is about to come true.
Charlie is an aspiring actor, with his only credit as the spray on abs guy. Both have just broken up with who was considered their true loves. In a chance encounter (and they also happen to be next door neighbors), he invites her to Turks & Caicos to make his ex Brooke jealous, in what should have been a trip between Charlie and Brooke. Sloane decides, why not, as she prepares herself to snag the job of her dreams at Catapult.
First off, the book starts off in a bar bathroom, during an LA earthquake, where another girl trips on her heel and busts her tooth on a sink. I'm not really sure why this scene happened. It seemed like an afterthought and it was the first few pages. It didn't bore me, but I was expecting something else to come of it.
Secondly, Catapult basically tells Sloane she can't have the job if she has a boyfriend, decides to get married, has a baby, etc. In this day and age, I would have called my lawyer asap and all financial problems would have been solved. She goes along with it as a final candidate for the job.
Lastly, I wished there was more description of Turks & Caicos. I felt they were regulated in their suite. most of the time.
I loved Love Buzz, and I was excited for her second book. Wish it could have been maybe 30 pages less, or have more Turks & Caicos descriptions.

sent a couple of voice memos complaining about this book while i was reading it and a text that said "i'm free worst experience of my fucking life" when i was done. anyways. incredibly unrealistic premise (that the author tried to wrap up in the epilogue but...), the characters annoyed me deeply (one of them was just so immature and self-centered and frustrating) + had very little chemistry. whatever. at least i'm free.

I absolutely LOVED this book! I do not understand why the ratings are low for this one? I had read Neely's debut and I thought that was going to be a romance but ended up being more women's fiction so I thought maybe this one was going to be the same - it was not!
I just loved everything from start to end and all the fun in the middle! I love the progression of Sloane & Charlie's relationship. This isn't overly spicy but does have a few moments. I also love that Neely had Sloane work in a male dominated field as a video game creator and the struggle of being in the industry.
I ended up listening to this one in a day because I just was so into it (also had the help of little distraction at work). I thought the narrator, Jorjeana Marie did a fantastic job and was such an easy listen.
I feel like this could be an underrated romance & I think romance readers would enjoy or if you are thinking about trying a romance, this is a great intro read.
This book just made me really happy & I hope others give it a try!

I thought the beginning of this book, a couple of best friends in a bathroom at the bar was so great in showing characters that I was really impressed. I continued to read, and enjoyed the writing.
Some of this is about workplace sexism, particularly those industries that are difficult for women and likely place an expectation that is not placed on men.
Sloane escapes the real world to a fantasy to find the real things she wants - while some readers may feel there's absolutely no way the overt request would ever be made of a woman not to get caught up in family drama, or they don't want to read it in idealized characters, I'm not with them, and I didn't see this as too far off base. It's doesn't take long to discover pockets of good ol boys at any large company, nor do I doubt there are industries full of them, nor do I doubt ambitious young people give in to the demand of them to live their dreams .
So, I appreciate that conflict as well as the multi layered ex recovery(though I liked that less) and I found this book immensely enjoyable to read. I could've used less push& pull during the resort stay, but I'll take what I can get.

For much of the book, I thought it was 3.5 stars but I’m rounding up because I really love this ending!
I love that Sloane gets her dream, sees it’s not what she wants, and learns “well, I’ll make a new dream.” I love that her best friend also gets the happy ending of a proposal, and Sloane is excited to share that moment with her. I love her being more honest with her mom & her mom doesn’t change overnight, but becomes more accepting of her daughter living outside the lines she envisioned for Sloane. Don’t love that they’re decidedly in love after a week, but I do love that Charlie is so kind & gentle (also maybe good timing in that I finished Onyx Storm and I don’t like Xaden for being so alpha male lol). Also s/o Anita, a corporate girls girl that we love.
Sweet & predictable romance book! Can’t wait to see the author at Tucson festival of books.

September 25, 2024This was a fun romance! Sloane, the main character, is a designer of video games. She is starting a new and exciting job and her bosses ask her to commit to not being in a romantic relationship so she can give all her energy to the job. She agrees and then a conflict arises. Her neighbour Charlie asks her to go on a trip with him to make his ex jealous. As she begins to have feelings for Charlie she is conflicted since she has made the big job commitment. This was a fun story that flowed well. The characters were interesting and it was an enjoyable read.

After really enjoying Neely's debut LOVE BUZZ, I knew I had to read IN A NOT SO PERFECT WORLD. This book is absolutely no sophomore slump!
While this romance is really fun: a kiss with a stranger, an unexpected trip to Turks and Caicos, and some less-than-stellar exes, I also really loved all parts of the plot. Neely did such a good job with the friendships, jobs, and family expectations. As a woman in STEM, I loved the realistic portrayal of applying for jobs in a male-dominated field. Honestly, the expectations are just ridiculous and I have totally been in a similar situation before. This is a total win!

I loved this romance novel so much - it hooked me immediately from the first page!
I loved learning more about the fascinating world of gaming and also the overall premise.
Two heartbroken people (a female gamer and male actor from LA) decide to go on a vacation together and fall in love.
Would you ever go on an island 🏝️ vacation with a HOT 🔥 neighbor who is a complete stranger?
I appreciated that the author called out that any girl would be hesitant to do so.
Even though the story was narrated from the single POV of the FMC, it was pretty clear from the MMC’s reactions how he felt about her so it didn’t feel like a one-sided love story or that we were missing his POV. Though this was a slow burn romance, the sexual tension was so palpable! 🔥🔥 I also understood why the FMC was hesitant at first to pursue a relationship with him.
I also appreciated that the author portrayed the sexism and misogyny that exists in the male dominated world of gaming.
I loved how the FMC, who was half Indian with a difficult Indian mother, came up with game concepts and design - it was so cool!
Looking forward to reading the author’s debut, Love Buzz and her next book!

I tried really hard to find an enjoyment level in this one but I just could not connect from the beginning. While I liked the initial idea of the spontaneous trip with plenty of forced proximity to find some feelings, this was left with me wanting a whole lot more than I was given.
There were so many random scenes that I don’t feel like they truly helped the story move along. Random side tangents and way too many drunken kisses that wasn’t allowing for true connection. Both Charlie and Sloane had some small, good banter moments, but also spent way too much time arguing for no reason.
I was excited about the gaming content and instead received a sleaze-ball group of men who were so very stereotyped that it made me frustrated. It’s many men, but it’s not all men and I wish it wasn’t entirely forced. This did not have the intended effect on me. There were GLARING red flags from the beginning that honestly would have stopped the book after three chapters.
I will consider this my last book by this author.

This book was a delight—smooth, elevated writing, plenty of spice, and a perfect blend of reality and romance. Dialogue is sharp but not annoyingly quippy (this is a personal pet peeve of mine), and the story moves at a good clip. Characters have dimension and are easy to root for, and the gamer aspect adds some additional interest.
Fans of TJR and Emily Giffin should have this book on their list for 2024!

Meh. I sadly forgot the title of this book when I was finished reading it. I wouldn’t say it’s terrible, but I feel forgettable. 🤷🏻♀️
The best thing about this book was the cover.
🎧 I listened to this audiobook. Jorjeana Marie delivered this narration just fine. Personally, I feel she may be suited best for YA novels.
