Ken Follett

Ken has been active in numerous literacy charities and was president of Dyslexia Action for ten years. He was chair of the National Year of Reading, a joint initiative between government and businesses. He is also active in many Stevenage charities and is President of the Stevenage Community Trust and Patron of Home-Start Hertfordshire.
Ken, who loves music almost as much as he loves books, is an enthusiastic bass guitar player. He lives in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with his wife Barbara, the former Labour Member of Parliament for Stevenage. Between them they have five children, six grandchildren and two Labradors.

Sama książka doskonała, fenomenalna, ponadprzeciętna. Nie ma chyba dobrych słów aby ją opisać. Teraz wszystkie te książki, które oceniłem na 5 gwiazdek musiałbym po prostu obniżyć do 4 :)
Książkę "czytałem" we formie słuchowiska. Na pewno na oceną duży wpływa ma właśnie ten fakt. Muzyka podniosła, budująca napięcie znacznie potęguje emocje podczas słuchania. Rewelacyjna narracja w wykonaniu Gosztyły.
Jest to pierwsza książka w trakcie słuchania, której krzyknąłem z emocji. Nic dodać nic ująć. Kto nie czytał / słuchał niech żałuje.

Buenísimo cada libro, cada capítulo y cada página si me apuras.
Puede que no sea un 10/10 para mí por ciertas escenas demasiado explicitas que hacen que me hierva la sangre, pero sí que es cierto que los personajes malvados de Ken Follet parece que se caracterizan por eso, provocadores que te hacen leer sin parar hasta su final, para ver qué es de ellos.
Me ha gustado mucho.
Puede que no sea un 10/10 para mí por ciertas escenas demasiado explicitas que hacen que me hierva la sangre, pero sí que es cierto que los personajes malvados de Ken Follet parece que se caracterizan por eso, provocadores que te hacen leer sin parar hasta su final, para ver qué es de ellos.

After 1'040 pages, I have to say this was a very good read.
My edition has the story divided in 3 parts, but not equal parts. The first one was quite thick, second was thiner and the last one, this one, was the shortest, it had around 200 pages... So, according to that, I have my sayings of each of the books:
The first one was a bit tedious. It was very long, very descriptive, the story was barelly somehow starting but I wasn't really connectig or getting attached to it. The friend that gave me this book, throw the towel after 300 pages of a "boaring story"... But I wanted to continue and see why is this novel is still so famous after sooo many years!! I remember my friend Max recommended it to me when we were in Jr. High and were 15 years old... So, I've always had it in my To-read-List. 10 years it took me :o Lol!
Anyways, second part was great! The whole story grows and mixes up, and the characters really show up and your get yourself very well attached. The descriptions are still very present, for every set or situation details are quite important. This is like a looooong movie, so you have to be concious about that and not anxious expecting to read it all in one bite.
About the characters:
I like Aliena, even though she has lots of mental limitations she IS very revolutionary to her times. She's less agressive or decisive only when fears or traumas come up, but in general, her attitude and intelligence move her.
Ellen is also very good. She is vital from the begging 'till the end of the story. She is strong, free, independent and brave. A great mom and a pasisonate lover. Tom, her love, is not my type of man but well, she had the love-chemistry she needed,to stay by his side.
Alfred and William are HORRIBLE. Ruthless, inhumane, cruel and savege. I hated their attitude always! There were not good enough reasons to understand their death hearts. So no, I have no mercy with them. Waleran at least was intelligent and moved by true ambition. He didn't need bad habits or phisicall violence to prove anything to anyone. I imagined a tall grumpy seriuos man but, with lots of character and wordly-wise...
And Jack, was my favorite although he was a bit belated at some situations but its ok. The story exists thanks to him. He was a free-thinker, rebel, restless, with lots of dreams to live for. Always honest to himself. I love this kind of people. The ones that are not afraid to be different, that doesn't apologies for being themselves. That doesn't care if they are not understood by everyone, he is happy with his small-high-quality-circle. I belief that this is the kind of people that made huge changes in the past so that our present is what it is today. Those are true Survivors.
The last book was a piece of cake. Was the end of all intrigues. The only thing I didnt like was the high importance of Politics, Church and religion. At some parts I got bored. And even though I think the individual stories ended the way they should have, the last page was a pluff to me. I'm not religious so I was like ok, I will omit this last part... haha
So yeah, In general this was a great long book to live-in for many many hours. No regrets.

Un final muy bueno y bien cerrado. Una historia que no deja de sorprender y te mantiene en vilo hasta la última página.

Ken Follet couldn't write a good dialogue to save his life, but this volume was at least entertaining. Plotlines were closed okay-ish and some of the characters showed bits of personality. Actually one character, Philip. Anyway it feels really strange to read about forty years of events and only getting to know maybe a dozen of characters. It feels like most people in Kingsbridge were like game NPCs, just strolling around and saying one line for their whole life. But at least in this one the surroundings didn't felt like cardboard scenography.

El final del libro aceleró demasiado rápido, rompiendo un poco el ritmo que se tenía. Además me quedo con la duda de que pasó con un par de personajes. De ahí en fuera, el libro es tan bueno como los dos anteriores y realmente te hace sentir en los zapatos de los personajes.

Sin duda uno de los mejores libros que me he leído. Siento que conecté realmente con la forma de vida de la Edad Media a través de los personajes. Por eso me encantan las novelas históricas, porque siento que son la mejor manera de comprender las ambiciones y motivos que movían el mundo en esos tiempos. Al no ser religiosa me conmovió la fé del prior Philip e incluso el temor que sentía William hacia lo divino. Me gustó especialmente la diversidad de los personajes. No había ninguno que se pareciera a otro, lo que hace el libro muy realista a mi parecer.
Diría que lo único que podría criticar, es que me pareció un poco tedioso y repetitivo las tragedias a las que se tuvo que enfrentar el Aliena y el prior Philip. Entiendo que quizás el objetivo de Ken Follet con esto era mostrarnos la resiliencia de estos personajes y hacer que su éxito al final del libro se sienta mayor. Sin embargo, personalmente sentí que era como el cuento de las cabritas y el lobo, en el sentido de que al final ya me parecía mentira y poco realista que tantas cosas terribles les pasaron.
Algunas de mis partes favoritas son: cuando finalmente Tom Builder consigue el trabajo como maestro constructor de la Catedral de Kingsbridge (casi que se podría haber terminado el libro ahiii ajajaja); cuando Aliena encuentra a Jack en el otro lado del mundo en una catedral maravillosa con su hijo en brazos; cuando Philip es elegido prior de Kinsbridge (simple pero la base del libro básicamente); lo que significó la muerta de Santo Tomas y el papel que tuvo Philip en eso; la inauguración de la catedral; cuando Ellen acusa públicamente a Waleran de perjurio y Remigius la respalda (dos enemigos de Philip lo salvan) y cuando Aliena y Jack se están conociendo y van todos los domingos a que Jack le cuente historias en el bosque.

El tercero de ésta increíble trilogía. No es mejor que el primero pero es una excelente novela. De las pocas que tienen de todo: intriga, romance, traición, guerra, sangre, alegrías, desencantos y un largo etc.
Solo una parte critico: una anciana de 60 años nunca parecerá un joven...
Sin duda Kenia Follett es de mis autores favoritos de novela histórica!

Excelente novela histórica del autor británico Ken Follett, ambientada en Inglaterra en la Edad Media, en concreto en el siglo XII, durante un periodo de guerra civil conocido como la anarquía inglesa. Muy sutil y detallada obra que termina un poco acelerada para el contexto general del desarrollo de la historia.

Oceniając cały cykl: jest super. Jak już wcześniej pisałem - autor tak fajnie potrafił upleść historię i stworzyć postaci, że JA trzymałem kciuki za powstanie katedry ;) Naprawdę dobra robota - niektóre postaci się lubi, niektórych się wręcz nienawidzi. Żal, że już koniec.

Como fan y lectora imparable de este gran autor disfruté también de esta tercera novela, que sin embargo me parece algo peor que las dos primeras, sin dejar de ser increíble. Los acontecimientos se precipitan un poco pero por lo demás, otra novela entretenida y divertida para disfrutar.

Definitivamente un enorme libro, literalmente por el número de páginas, así como por la calidad literaria, un clásico de nuestros tiempos, al mejor estilo de los grandes escritores como Víctor Hugo, Tolstoi, Dumas, etc.
Pero con un ingrediente especial, no aburre NUNCA, yo recuerdo en Los Miserables, las enormes descripciones extremamente documentadas de temas tan fuera del contexto de la novela como el capitulo dedicado al "Caló", o a la catedral X, o a la batalla de Waterloo con que inicia la segunda parte titulada Cosette, igual puedo citar parte de "La Guerra y la Paz" que resultaban insufrible.
Pero en el caso de Follet, le pone cierto sabor a sus narraciones, o será porque ya a estas alturas tengo bien desarrollado el músculo lector, pero no me aburrí en ningún momento.
La novela tiene de todo, Intriga, pasiones, guerra, amor, odio, venganza, más intriga, conceptos de arquitectura gótica, historia crímenes, piedad, inglesa, mas intrigas, odio y perdón, sexo, drogas y rock... perdón, no llega a tando, pero es tan amplia que casi abarca todo.
La construcción de la catedral gótica de la ficticia población de Kingsbridge, en Inglaterra, en el siglo XII, es el escenario para una breve historia de la humanidad en el "Macondo" de Follet.
Con una linea temporal que abarca casi una vida completa, narra la vida y desvida de una serie de personajes que se vuelven entrañables, Ellen, Jack, Tom, el prior Philip, los Hamleigh, Percy, Regan y William, Bartholomew, Richard y Aliena condes de Shiring.
Sus encuentros y encontronazos, luchas, amores y todo lo que es abarcable en una novela, narrado con detalle y cuidadosa documentación.
No en balde ha vendido millones de copias en multiples idiomas.
Es un libro que alguien que se precie de ser un verdadero lector, no puede dejar de leer.

Buen final de saga. Quedé bastante conforme con como fueron cerrando todas las intrigas, algunas resultaron brillantes e inesperadas. Y generalmente feliz ya que se dedicó a matar y a ajusticiar a todos los que se lo merecían (dejó de meterse con el resto) y de la manera más apropiada para cada uno.
La línea Philip vs Waleran Bigot fue uno de los cierres inesperados, aunque gloriosamente apropiado.
La disputa central, por el poder entre la Iglesia y la Corona también termina de forma bastante inesperada. Y tenía que ganar la Iglesia si tenemos por un lado a Philip y en el otro cualquiera de todos los arrogantes reyes que fueron pasando. En este caso la fe de los creyentes, la movilización de la gente común, es lo que resulta definitivo al igual que sucedió con la Virgen de las lágrimas.
La escena final entre Alfred, Richard y Aliena es buenísima, los diálogos son re graciosos. Es casi lógico que terminara como terminó dada la historia de cada uno.
El final de Willam fue groso también. Aunque me tomó por sorpresa. La simetría entre los dos estrangulamientos del primer tomo y del último me encantó.
Resultó una saga muy buena, tres generaciones alrededor de la construcción de la catedral, cada una aportando lo más avanzado de la época. Indudablemente las dos primeras fueron las que lo tuvieron más difícil. Y pensar que fue el hambre y la miseria de su familia lo que impulsó a Jack a destruir la vieja iglesia. El hambre producto de la guerra civil que resultó de esta primera conspiración. Jack, que se pasaría la vida reconstruyéndola. Estuve esperando su confesión a Philip respecto de esto, pero que no se produjera calculo está más de acuerdo con su espíritu casi irreverente hacia lo religioso. Espíritu heredado de su madre ¿reflejo del verdadero ánimo de la gente común de la época o anacronismo?
