There is an author, who goes by the name of Fel. He releases his stories, chapter by chapter to the internet. They vary in genres, including fantasy and sci-fi. Several of these books are comparable in length to the epic story Les Miserable's, or longer.
At times this book was a bit of a slog. Don't get me wrong. I'm still liking the characters, the action, the science / technobabble, the setting, the aliens, the politics... All that is still great. But it's bogged down by a combination of way too much smut, and way too many new characters. It starts strong and finishes strong, but the middle slumps in a bad way.
As I've said in other reviews, I'm no prude. I have no problem with sex scenes or anything like that. But it seems like half the book is just porn. And it drags the pacing to a crawl. I've never skimmed so many paragraphs in another book as I have in this.
I wanted the plot to progress, I wanted more aliens, more space battles, more new inventions and technology. And at times it felt like for every 5 of that we'd then get 20 pages of diversionary indulgence.
Also, as I said, the author decided that we needed another 50 new characters, and most of them are children (as a result of all the sex). Which meant that at one point it was just kids birthday party after party after party. And I like the character work the author does. The characters are good. But at a certain point I just can't keep track of it all. Maya, Meya, Miri, Myra, Meri, Aura, Myleena, Miiri, etc etc. All with similar names. I honestly struggled to keep track of who was who and what they were doing and about. The author does tend to do a good job of reminding you, but that just adds to the repitition problem that the first book had. I imagine that to the original readers waiting a month for a new chapter to be posted this was just pure frustration, but maybe they have better memories than me.
I'd go as far as to say that about 200 pages could be cut from the book and the narrative would be unchanged. We'd just have less side-scenes where people boned or took their kids to the park. Note: not NO scenes were that happened. Just less. I'm not opposed to any of this in and of itself, but there's just way too much of it compared to the meat and potatoes.
Also one minor quibble I have is that the "alien-ness" of the aliens is kinda sacrificed for the side story sex scenes. One pet peve of mine is aliens using human coloquialisms and having everyone call each other "babes" or "hon" had me gnashing my teeth in frustration. Do they even have bees? Why would a culture that sees sex as a beautiful thing with no shame attached to it use the F word as a profanity? This was present in the previous two books but it seemed a bit more prominent in this one.
That being said, the narrative is good. And it did keep me reading. We see some new alien races, a new enemy, new allies. All great. The stuff with the exiles is interesting, and the Urumi are fun to delve into. The setup for the next book is well done and I'm excited to get into that next. As I said with book one, I just wish this was edited a bit more. It seems a bit stream-of-conscious-ey at times. But for all it's flaws it's got me hooked and I'll be starting on Tribulation as soon as I've finished writing this review.
I really can't say anything bad about this book, I loved it, the plot keeps expanding and several major things happen to shift what is going on in Jason's life. I'd recommend this book series to anyone. Its just that good.
