Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

Bill bought me this for Christmas as he really likes Guy de Maupassant but I'm afriad this collection didn't really do anything for me. I thought it was somewhere between Zola and Anatole France, trying to be realistic and moralising but not really accomplishing either. The stories seemed to largely be making fun of people, for being stupid, lazy, or just generally incompetent. There were some horrible parts, the story that stuck out the most was in a village where they had a pit where they left unwanted dogs to starve to death and kill each other. It was just awful. There were a couple stories that were ok, the only one that I still remember was about a young girl who had 5 boyfriends and got pregnant, not knowing who the father was they decided they would all adopt the child. But it died in a miscarriage, so they agreed they would all try again. I thought it was very sweet, but I fear it was there to point out the silliness of people without morals.

The book was in dual language which was good, I tried to read the French first and then the English which pointed out all the things I had misunderstood. But overall besides from practicing my French I really didn't get much out of reading this.

The stories were actually really entertaining. I liked reading this book and the difficulty of the words in French was just perfect for me. I could understand almost everything.

3- Disfrutable, podría recomendarlo a ciertas personas.
