A macabre tale of a mother and her young daughter's experiences at one of America's most infamous medical institutions. A true tale of horror, literally ! In 1951, Doris and her little girl, Cora, entered one of America's most prestigious facilities for the treatment of Tuberculosis, The Waverly Hills Sanatorium. The events that befell them shortly thereafter, both of a supernatural and criminal nature, were some of the most sordid of the time. Written by prolific author and frequent Humanoids contributor Christophe Bec ( Sanctum ), and drawn by acclaimed artist Stefano Raffaele ( Loving Dead ).
Christophe Bec is the writer of over fifty graphic novels. His flagship series as a writer, Shrine, has sold several hundred thousand copies worldwide. He is also the author of the comics Prometheus, Carthago, Darkness, Bunker, and Aéropostale.
Got this via a (disappointing) Humble Bundle. However, this horror series is well-made. The early days of medicine without a lot of the things we take for granted these day like hygiene, antibiotics, vaccines, anesthetics, patients' rights, ... could be horrifying. This is the story of a sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis in the fifties which didn't use antibiotics and a mother who brought her sick daughter here to heal. A story about compassion, cruelty, medical experiments, malpractice, omerta, superstition, hope, despair and loss. Not my favorite genre for comics, but this was well-made.
Something both evil and banal exists in a sanitarium for those with tuberculosis. The graphics enhances the creepiness and makes the tale even more terrifying.
