Greek: Έριχ φον Νταίνικεν Born on April 14th, 1935, in Zofingen, Switzerland, Erich von Däniken was educated at the College St-Michel in Fribourg, where already as a student he occupied his time with the study of the ancient holy writings. While managing director of a Swiss hotel, he wrote his first book, Chariots of the Gods, which was an immediate bestseller in the United States, Germany, and later in 38 other countries.
Von Däniken's books have been translated into 28 languages, and have sold 60 million copies worldwide. From his books two full-length documentary films have been produced: Chariots of the Gods and Messages of the Gods. Of the more than 3,000 lectures which Erich von Däniken has given in 25 countries, over 500 were presented at universities. Fluent in four languages, Erich von Däniken is an avid researcher and a compulsive traveller, averaging 100'000 miles each year to remote spots of the Earth. This enables him to closely examine the phenomena about which he writes.
Von Däniken is a member of the Swiss writers association, the German writers association, and the International PEN-Club.
This should have been entitled "The Gold of the Gullible," for that is what Mr. von Däniken obtained, including my hoarded pocket money back when I believed.
Read some of the comments by "readers" - Hello!!! He wrote this in the seventies and even went to prison for 2 years under highly mysterious circumstances at the time. We've come a long way since and many people have become more open-minded to controversial ideas. Okay, many people are also more closed-minded these days. I'm not fond of the translation errors and meagre answers to questions, but you can't argue away the ancient books he quotes and you can't call him conventional...
Another dose of meaningless drivel from Mr. von Daniken.
Honestly, the sad thing is that sometimes he does ask the right questions, and I do agree with him that far more research does need to be done in certain areas. I would also rather live in a world that spent billions on archaeology and research than on the defense industry. But his conclusions are so biased and he is completely and 100% blinded by his own pet hypothesis that he ignores the obvious to shoehorn it into his narrative. And he loves to kick the can down the road without answering the question. He seems to now be on the "Earth was seeded with live from space" idea - except he never seems to question where that life would have come from. This is not an answer, it's just a transfer of an answer back another step. He also seems to completely misinterpret the idea of the Big Bang.
As an example, near the end of the book he shows a hieroglyph of a "bee god" and refuses to see it as that, claiming that it must be an alien astronaut wearing an elaborate headdress with two bombs behind if. Yet, I can clearly see the bee imagery. The "headdress" is of an elongated oval shape, complete with stripes and it ends in a stinger and the the "bombs" angle off to the side like a bee's wings do. Its like looking at a bee from above - which makes sense for a stone carving. One can't really get into perspective and shading and 3d modeling with chisel and stone.
At any rate - this book spends about 30 pages on its main premise - this supposed gold-filled, plastic statue bearing, underground flood bunker, and the rest explaining how ancient myths and legends can't mean anything other than ancient astronauts. And yes, the whole reason ancient people built underground was to create bunkers to survive either a) the biblical flood (which is 100% factual according to von Daniken - and now probably had to do with changes to the Earth's axis the destruction of a supposed fifth planet, where our asteroid belt is now), or b) a catastrophic nuclear war between two separate groups of ancient astronauts (see aforementioned "fifth world destruction").
The man can't even keep his own pet hypothesis straight...
Danïken raised eyebrows with his first book, 'Chariots of the Gods?', which married a sensational theory with evidence that didn't hold up to the slightest scrutiny. By the time of 'The Gold of the Gods', he'd already served time in jail for fraud (he embezzled money from his employers to fund his research) and was a best selling author derided for his ridiculous conspiracy theories. You know, like Dan Brown.
'Gold' has EVD in an odd position: he's well aware of his critics yet invites further scorn by backing a wilder theory with flimsier evidence. Unlike 'Chariots', the nonsense in which was obscured by a careful ghost-writer, the lies in this one are right there in the text. How can Danïken find a large quantity of plaques in an unknown language in a subterranean labyrinth, yet be unable to photograph any? How can he fail to navigate his way to a library in China due to language barriers, but be capable of reading a book of early Chinese mythology in the same language? And how exactly did his ancient astronauts create life on Earth, a point he all too often skips over? It's strange to think this stuff ever attracted international attention; these days it would be left where it belonged, on a poorly-maintained Wordpress site or a rambling post on Reddit.
Outstanding evidence. I find the most intriguing aspect of these theories that they are quite old. My copy of this book is from 1973. I think we tend to believe that all "sightings" of UFO's come from more recent America and as American's we tend to believe we are the center of the Earth. As such we think that all sightings have happened around Area 51 and only since the advent of hand cameras. The truth is that there is evidence from possible "visitations" since the dawn of time. Long before modern time, heck back when Humans were still on the Stone Age. My brain and eyes can't stop eating this stuff up. Modern Conspiracy Theorists should really check these books out.
An interesting yet flawed read. While Daniken raises very interesting questions, the latter parts of this book veer off in to wild speculation that diminish the strength of earlier arguments.
Most of my inspiration for my own writing comes from writers like Daniken who point out the obvious holes in our current understanding of history. I'm seen enough evidence to know that alien life exists but you won't find much of that evidence here. Perhaps it is simply a matter of the book not holding up well with age. More likely it was a case of a publisher pushing the author on to make ever-more audacious claims to help sell books.
Daniken's Chariots of the Gods blew my mind when I first read it 30+ years ago. He is the forefather of an entire genre of books now...many of which are better written than The Gold of the Gods.

Não, man. A sério.
I really got a kick out of this guy when I was a kid. Not only were his theories loads of fun, and kind of comically eccentric, but his frenzied enthusiasm was ridiculously charming.
Metallic libraries, paradoxical drawings (some of them - etchings on metal), all kinds of weird cutlery - and all of this prepared in the way to suggest otherworldly cultures of the past, ones that somehow got lost through all the ages.
Some of this could even be true, some - the author likely went overboard with all the kilometres of underground secret tunnels built in ancient times and still chockful of ancient gold stuff.
...big von Däniken moves include asking nonsensical questions ("Do the circles indicate the number of space travelers buried inside the pyramid?") but not answering them, just making stuff up (you won't believe all the amazing shit he saw but wasn't allowed to take pictures of), and, my favorite, a little something I like to call "Von Däniken Non Sequitur Logic", where one real fact somehow proves a completely unrelated, made-up fact.
One of my favorite books by Mr Daniken. I love his books because he is easy to read. It doesn't get bogged up with too much technical stuff. He writes so that everyone can understand what he is saying. If you want to feel convinced that Aliens were on Earth before us and created us, then read Mr. Daniken's books. He's very thought provoking but he also backs up his claims with a lot of real evidence. Not only in artifacts but also even using the bible! He's a great writer. He is well worth the read. This book deals with prehistoric earthly era of the Gods.
Horrible! Worse than the last one. All he does is ask questions and draw conclusions with no evidence. As one reviewer said, "You wouldn't believe the things he couldn't take pictures of!" While I am willing to consider his hypothesis as valid, I'll defer to other authors (Zacharia Sitchin) who provide realistic explainations and conslusions - even if all of this is nonsense.
Another fictional account from Daniken. Daniken himself has admitted that he had fabricated the entire cave adventure in 1978.If you are reading this anytime in this century, read it as a fictional story.
When i know the actual backstory, it is funny to read his spin as a fictional description. Hence, 1 star instead of zero.
Pure fiction written as if it were a valid scientific theory. Entertaining in its fashion as long as you realize that it is just a collection of fantastical explanations for human events that can be more readily and logically explained by archaeology.
This book was a neat book that excited a lot of people in the 70's, including me. Yes, I enjoyed it and it excited my imagination, but I was a kid at the time. The problem I have with it now is it just seems kind of stupid.
This sample of lie selling turns out to be boring and insulting reader's intellect, starting right from the first paragraphs. I had expected that it would be all lies, but was curious about the art of lying in it. I found not much of that up to the point where I stopped wasting my time.
Follow up to Chariots of the Gods. As a kid I found these quite fascinating, being caught up with the whole "Battlestar Galactica" man came from outer space vibe. But there's more holes than a colander in the arguments. Nice try but no cigar.
More of the Chariots Of The Gods stuff... nothing wrong with that necessarily but by the time he wrote this one he had come to believe his own hype a bit too much!
