Отдавна четено, но незабравено. Томан подхожда към своя Дон Жуан с любопитния въпрос доколко отрицанието и неговият обект често са почти едно и също. Религиозният екстремизъм и задух; и развратът като изследване, като търсене на същия абсолют. Еднакво разрушителни, защото и в двете липсва мъдрост, и в двете липсва обичта към този до теб или дори желанието да го погледнеш какъвто е и да го харесаш.
Дон Жуан на Томан е изследовател, който открива, за да изгуби, и изгубвайки - намира. Много съпричастен, безмилостен и неромантичен (според романтиците от ХIX век, които не понасям особено) поглед. Съвсем лишен от мистика или байроновски адски пламък, но точно затова - близък.

Fără hotar e împărăţia cerurilor. Dincolo de cuprinderea gândului omenesc se întind peste toate ţările nesfârşitele plaiuri cereşti; se spune însă din străbuni că tronul Domnului sălăşluieşte deasupra Spaniei.
Din vremuri neştiute datează înverşunata dispută dintre Toledo şi Sevilla, fiecare socotindu-se îndreptăţită a fi mai aproape de dragostea Domnului şi de mâna binecuvântată a dumnezeirii.
Cu aprige cuvinte, rostite sau scrise, s-au războit oamenii învăţaţi ai bisericii pentru această întâietate, iar arhiepiscopii celor două oraşe s-au rugat Atotputernicului să pună capăt vrajbei lor printr-o minune.Şi i-a auzit Atotputernicul şi astfel, pe timpul domniei împăratului Carol Quintul, a făcut să se cutremure atât de puternic pământul Andaluziei, încât la Sevilla zidurile au crăpat şi casele s-au năruit, prefăcându-se în mormane de moloz.
„Dumnezeu a hotărât, au jubilat cei din Toledo. Pedepsindu-vă pe voi, andaluzi păcătoşi, cu acest cutremur de pământ, e limpede că noi, castilienii, îi suntem mai dragi.” „Dumnezeu ce-i drept, a hotărât, le-au răspuns atunci sevillanii. Suntem, de bună seamă, păcătoşi, dar nu mai păcătoşi ca voi. Punându-ne la această grea încercare, el n-a făcut decât să ne prevină şi în felul acesta să arate că noi îi suntem mai apropiaţi.”
Şi când, nu mult după aceea, Dumnezeu a trimis peste Toledo ciuma, şi unii şi alţii au întors vorba, şi astfel conflictul a rămas mai departe fără dezlegare.
Dar noi, andaluzii, căzuţi pradă dragostei pătimaşe pentru Soare – or, voi, stăpânii noştri cei mai sfinţi, ştiţi prea bine că prin gurile noastre nu vorbesc păgânii! – noi susţinem cu îndârjire că nu-i pământ mai îndrăgit de Domnul ca Andaluzia, şi nici un preţ nu punem noi pe vechea legendă. Nici un preţ!
O, Andaluzie!
Ţie îţi dăruim noi glasul inimii noastre, deşi se ştie prea bine că până şi diavolul a îndrăgit, mai presus de orice, tocmai acest colţ al ţării spaniole.
Grădină a grădinelor, dumbravă a dumbrăvilor, vale a fericirii!
Precum Calea Lactee, ce taie bolta cerească, te străbate rodnicul Guadalquivir – ramură de argint bătută din stele căzătoare. Sub însemnul florilor de portocali, sub însemnul dragostei pluteşti, o, Andaluzie, între ceruri şi infern, cufundată în dogoarea cotropitoare a soarelui ce aprinde în inimi deopotrivă dragostea nestăvilită pentru Domnul şi pentru duhul rău; uşoară, pluteşti, nălucă aburie cu farmec de fluture, târându-ţi franjurii mantilei prin băltoacele de sânge de sub ferestrele zăbrelite ale frumoaselor femei.
Pe şoldurile tale povârnite îşi înşiră cârlionţii crângurile de măslini şi îşi agaţă cârceii viţa-de-vie cu ciorchini rubinii.

Pavisam nejauši uzgāju šo grāmatu un jāsaka, ka šī nejaušība bija lieliska. Šī tagad ir viena no manām mīļākajām grāmatām. Spēcīgas emocijas, kaisle, pasaules redzējums, kurš liek aizdomāties.

nesavaldīgi izgrūž. - Ja es eju pa zemi, arī sievietei, kuru mīlu, ir

Ja es viņai ieķīlāju savu dzīvi, viņa nedrīkst man piedāvāt mazāku

spēcīgāka par šausmām un pretīgumu. Varbūt vēl ir iespēja Migelu
pārveidot.
- Dēlinņ, atjēdzies taču! Tas, ko tu saki, ir necilvēcīgi...
- Visu vai neko, - Migels izgrūž caur zobiem. - Ja es dodu visu,
arī otram jādod man viss. Un melus es nekad nevienam nepiedošu!

There is a book I read every few years, a book with covers yellowed by age and coffee stained pages. I found it ages ago it seems, in the bookcase my parents had in the living room. Every time I hold it in my hands I make a mental note to ask them how it got there and every time I forget.
It never crossed my mind to write a review for it until now. I do so today (after I finished reading the book just yesterday) because I don’t want this book to be forgotten, because it deserves more than that. Much more. Every time I read it I find new meaning in its words and even though I know sections of it by heart, I still look forward to reading them.
The story, ah, the story! Who hasn’t heard of Don Juan, one of the most famous myths in literature! His name is like a cloak under which hide young noble men whose only pursuit in life is the pleasure of the flesh. A myth as old almost as time itself. And yet, this story is alive. Every word seems to burn the page, rushing like blood through the veins after a quick run. It never falters and every page brings about a new and unforeseeable turn.
The events start in 1640, the year Miguel de Mañara turns fourteen. We get a glimpse into his family life and we see his hot- tempered father, one of the richest nobles of Spain, and his quiet religious mother whose heart hides a secret known to very few. Their lives play out against the background of a tormented country weakened by constant wars, where the gap between the rich and the poor is like an abyss with an invisible end, and where the Inquisition sees with its ever watchful eye and reaches with its greedy hands into the lives of people.
Miguel is the main character of the tale, and we get to see him grow from the young, timid boy, whose emotions are greater than he can control, to the impetuous ruthless young nobleman whose money and adventures make him feared throughout the land.
There are two people who will influence his life, both priests and both chosen by his parents, but they are as different as night and day, and under their teachings and their advice, his life alters with dramatic consequences. Will he follow the path of his good Padre Gregorio, will he succumb to the twisted views of Trifon, or will he find another way? Will his search for love bring him peace or will it crush him? Questions I never tire of reading the answers to, time and again.

🌸O poveste de viață foarte interesantă, m-a făcut să mă gândesc serios la neprevazutul pe care îl poate aduce soarta.
🌸Miguel, conte de Manara are totul, e tânăr, frumos, bogat și iubit de femei.
🌸 Acesta duce o viață tumultoasă și scandaloasă, mereu în brațele altei femei, până ce o întâlnește pe Girolama și întreaga lui lume se reduce la ea.
🌸Din nefericire, boala o răpune pe Girolama, ceea ce îl determină pe Miguel, care nu a fost vreun credincios nici înainte, să nu renunț se revolte complet împotriva lui Dumnezeu.
🌸Viața lui trece de la o extremă la alta, renunță la tot, fiind îngenuncheat de viață, își găsește credința de care a fugit mereu și își dedică viața ajutorării celorlalți.
🌸🌸🌸De la Miguel de Manara am învățat sloganul "O todo, o nada!" și m-am raportat de multe ori la acesta de când am citit cartea. 🌸🌸

don miguel is an infuriating, egotistical and overbearing individual. even more infuriating is how others (especially women) condone, protect, and love him. I finally got some relief as his dreadful character breaks down eventually during his later metamorphosis. this novel definitely reminded me to be wary of falling into extremes.
