เป็นเล่มที่ช่วยให้เราจัดระเบียบแบบง่ายๆในการรับรู้ เรื่องของตำนานเทพเจ้ากรีก จากก่อนหน้านี้ที่รู้แบบคร่าวๆจากพวกเรื่องเล่า หนังภาพยนตร์ และ งานเขียนอื่นๆที่อิงจากตำนานกรีก

บางเรื่องช่วยให้เราเข้าใจความนัยจากงานเขียนเล่มอื่นที่เคยอ่านไป (แต่ก็จำไม่ได้แล้วว่าเล่มไหน) อันสื่อความหมายมาจากตัวละครของตำนานกรีกเหล่านี้ เช่น พุ่มลอเรล (จำได้ว่าอ่านเจอไปหลัดๆ เกี่ยวกับต้นลอเรล... แต่ก็ลืม) ว่ามีที่มาจากความรักของเทพอพอลโลนี้เอง ที่โดนคิวปิดแผลงศรใส่ ทำให้อพอลโลไปตกหลุมรักดาฟเน่ แต่ด้วยความปั่นป่วนจากศรของคิวปิดนี้ ก่อให้เกิดความรักแบบล้นๆเกินๆ ไปๆมาๆ เลยไม่สมหวังกัน ทำให้ดาฟเน่ต้องกลายเป็นต้นลอเรล ทำได้แค่เพียงสะบัดกิ่งและใบลงมาให้อพอลโล เพื่อจะสื่อว่า เธอยกโทษให้เขาแล้ว

อ่านได้สนุกๆ พร้อมภาพประกอบสวยๆ
มาอ่านตอนไม่ใช่เด็กแล้ว ก็ยังชวนให้ช่างฝันได้เหมือนเดิม

อ่านไป อ่านมา เราว่าบางเรื่องก็ดูเว่อร์วัง เหลือเชื่อ เหมือนเรื่องเล่านิทานพื้นบ้านของฝั่งเรา หรืองานเขียนของสุนทรภู่ และเรื่องจากตำนานเกี่ยวกับจักรๆวงศ์ๆ เรื่องอื่น อยู่ไม่น้อยเหมือนกัน

แต่ทั้งนี้สำหรับเราถ้าเรื่องของเทพนิยายที่ชอบที่สุดก็คงจะเป็น เทพนิยายของฮันส์ คริสเตียน แอนเดอร์เซน ที่สุดของความโศกสลดแต่ก็งดงามเหลือเกิน

ป.ล. อ่านฉบับครบถ้วนแบบมีทุกองค์เทพก็ต้องไปตามอ่านเล่ม ปกรณัมปรัมปรา ของเอดิธ แฮมิลตัน ต่อไป เพราะตัวละครของตำนานกรีก-โรมัน นี่มีเยอะเหลือเกิน และก็อ่านยากกว่าเล่ม เทพนิยายกรีกเล่มนี้

ป.ล.2 ขยับเลเวลจากเล่ม ปกรณัมปรัมปรา มาอีก ก็คงเป็นเล่มอีเลียด กับเล่มโอดีสซี

sanitized roman myths illustrated by margaret evans price (who i was introduced to here: women illustrators of the golden age). her work is best when she focuses on simplicity and lets her beautiful linework shine. sometimes she gets a bit too oversentimental and her drawings suffer for it (the cover, for example). here is atalanta, which i liked:

This is another one like the second copy of The Aesop for Children by Milo Winter that I have. Again the ISBN goes to a Mother Goose (the identical ISBN on The Aesop... too). It's a beautiful jacket-less hardcover.

1 star. I read this book to see if there was anything worth reading to my siblings, but there was not. The book was not poorly written, but the tales chosen were full of the Greek gods, magic, and hints at unfaithfulness and trouble between Jupiter & Juno.

I loved this as a kid. The illustrations are fantastic!
