Aftermath

Rate this book
Carly McGrath has suffered many losses. She's lost friends. She's lost family. She may even have lost her mind.

In an attempt to clear her head and get her life back on track, Carly visits her best friend, Kayla, in Los Angeles. Rather than finding herself and facing up to her problems, Carly ends up drinking to excess, flirting with anything that will stand still, and generally raising hell.

But Carly's friends -and her conscience- don't let her get away with partying like a rock star for long. She finds herself facing some tough questions and even tougher choices. Sooner or later, she must find the strength to face her past before the demons she's running from catch up to her and push her over the edge.

About the author

Erin McGowan

Erin McGowan lives in Galveston, Texas, where she spends as much time as possible writing or walking in the surf. She also travels with her roommate and partner-in-crime, L.B. Clark, whenever she can.

While pursuing her master's degree in accounting from Stephen F. Austin, Erin discovered that writing during and after class was a great way to relieve stress and focus. Changing jobs and moving all over Texas fueled her desire to write and gave her some great story ideas, and deciding to partner with her roommate in a publishing company gave her every reason to share said stories with the world.

Erin finds that story ideas come from everywhere. Watching the ocean, picking figs in the morning, even walking down the street to get coffee can lead to an idea for a book or a short story. She also finds that her natural empathy and love of music lends itself to writing about musicians and the music industry.

For Erin, writing is like laughing; you can get through life without it, but what would be the point?

I must admit that, for me, the first few chapters lagged. Maybe it was because the protagonist kept repeating the same actions, but then again, that was a major point in the book. Carly can't get her life back on track after several deaths of people closest to her derail the train. She embraces alcohol, substance abuse, and bed-hopping in order to suppress pain and memories she can't deal with.

I really liked many of the characters in the book, especially Daniel, Gabriel, and a few others in Carly's commune-type family. The plot was gradual and kept me reading because I needed to know what everyone's story was and who they really were. The names got confusing at times but didn't distract me from the story too much.

I'm not a "Cali-Gal" so was unable to determine if some of the actions of the characters were exaggerated or not, but they made for an amusing read at times. It would be nice to have some back-story on a few of the characters who played major roles in Carly's life, too. I actually found them more interesting than the protagonist.

All in all, this book is worth the money and an interesting take on how some deal with heartache and pain. Kudos to the author as I really enjoyed her voice in book. It was very real and written in a language I could relate to.

"The funny thing about running from tragedy is that the race is always going to be rigged. Tragedy will always find you and beat you. Bet on that."

Aftermath is an eggy book with a raw feeling to it. The dark places this person goes and lack of refinement is what drew me in the most. It was easy to get into the characters head and get absorbed into her trials and tribulations. I like the authors conversational style of writing. It's welcoming and takes you right in. I enjoyed the sarcastic wit and bumpy ride. Though this is a dark tale about life and loss, it is intriguing and easy to absorb.

This emotional story reeled me in and touched me from deep within. This story is told with such force and candidness that it made me feel as if I was reading the life story of someone close to me. It was alluring, devastating and life-like. The feelings shared seemed anything but ones in fiction.

This book is as boring and poorly written as a book can be. It was a free download, thank goodness.
