The Newest Addition to The Dusk Gate Chronicles Has Finally Arrived!
Things were finally going well for Quinn and William -- a kingdom in check, their enemy behind bars, and a special new someone to celebrate.
Until a mysterious danger threatened to take it all.
With the gate closed and no way to reach the resources they desperately need, time is running out.
Will help from an unexpected source reach them in time?
Featuring the return of everyone's favorite characters -- including some old friends we never expected to see again -- Canes of Divergence takes The Dusk Gate Chronicles in a whole new direction.
I received and ARC copy of this book from the author for an honest review:
Oh my, ever since I finished "Blooms of Consequence" I wanted to have this book so badly. You guys all know how much I love this series so it comes as no surprise when I tell you that I was super excited when I got my copy of the book.
The story continues right where we left of with the last book. Quinn and Will are parents and for the moment enjoying life at the Eirentheos castle. But of course the peace doesn't last and before long, the whole castle is in uproar due to unexpected visitors and threats coming from places that were not expected anymore. In the end, will the secret of the gate be safe or will their enemies finally succeed in getting what they always wanted: across the other side?
So much for the story. You know I'm not a fan of actually telling you much of what is happening in the book because you should all just go and read it right away!
I can tell you this much though: Zander, who has played a key role in the first books, will be back. And I wasn't exactly sure if I was excited or not about that, because Zander always represented the past that Quinn left behind. Throughout the book I was a little worried that the story would focus more on Zander than on Quinn and William (which they are the main reason I fell in love with this book). But Breeana Puttroff managed to make me wish for a William and Quinn scene and right there it was. And in case I haven't mentioned this, I looooooooooove those two.
Breeana Puttroff has this magical world she created and no matter who the story revolves around, you just cannot stop reading. You just WANNA know what happens with all of them. This story doesn't solemnly focus on Quinn and William, which might seem a little weird at first, since the first books where mainly about them, but since you just LOVE all of the other characters as well, you don't mind the other storylines as well. And there are plenty of them. It never gets boring, there's always action going on and you always wanna read faster while at the same time just slowing down to not have the end come too quickly.
I knew there was going to be something tragic happening in this book. something that would require me getting my tissues out. When I started reading, it was clear what would happen, and also that there were only two people in the story this could happen to. Just so you know, I hate it when I'm right, I really really do!
With an end like this, I sincerely hope that this is not the last we have seen of this world, because there are lots more things to learn about or to figure out, and I'd really like to have more of this story....LOTS more, if it was up to me!
So again, like in my last post already, I urge you to get this series and dive into this magical and beautiful world!
Jesus Christ, this author seriously loves babies. Like, really really really loves god damn babies. I'm half-tempted to knock it down to 2 stars just because the overabundance of gushing about how fucking magical and wonderful babies are really got on my nerves. But I will leave it at 3 stars, because I also understand that I'm just kind of a bitter old spinster.
No, but seriously: Babies are so stupid.
In other news, the book was pretty slow and felt a bit like a soap opera. I shouldn't be surprised, the first 5 books seemed to get cheesier with each installment. I did enjoy the side characters that were highlighted. And I have to say, I was thrilled to finally see a major character get killed. (Again, because I'm pretty much a terrible person.) I felt like the first five books played it too safe, and nobody important ever got worse than a busted leg. It was nice to see the author make her attempt at a Cedric Diggory moment, and I appreciated that.
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reading copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, I have to say that this series is one of my very favorites. I have already read the entire series (minus this one) several times. I can't get enough. The characters are fabulous. You can help but to love most of them, and even hate a few.
This book was so good, it was really hard to put it down to have to deal with reality. I won't spoil it, but it was so good I will be thinking about it for days. It was so well written that at times I felt like I was really there. I will recommend this book (the entire series!) to all my family and friends.
Canes of Divergence by Breeana Puttroff is the fifth book in the Dust Gate Chronicles, and while I did enjoy it, I did like the first four better. This one had more POV from other characters, which was nice but new. Towards the end of the book I got really hooked…. and then it ended. So I will defiantly be reading the next book!!!
So, I like it, but there are holes. This book falls back into the pacing problems, and even though it had some good action it was completely predictable. Every single character talks just too much. Every piece of dialog is a lecture on the philosophy of the meaning of life and love and the answers to the universe.
I read in the afterward that she had meant to stop after 4 books but then decided to write 3 more. I'm wondering if maybe 4 was okay. And really those 4 could be cleaned up and streamlined, so maybe if these last 3 have enough substance they could have potential too? This one was too predictable to have enough complexity, but maybe the next two could beef it up? I don't know.
I'm not sure if I'll finish the series because it seemed like it already peaked. But maybe sometime I'll be in the mood.
Okay this one surprised me. I wasn't sure about this at first. I didn't mind Zander in the first four books but I didn't love him. But this was awesome. Zander really grew on me. Apart from that, Owen stars in the first half of the book! I love Owen. I loved that he came to visit Quinn and got to meet Samuel Owen. I love the relationship between Owen and Samuel and also Quinn and Owen and William and Owen. Plus Owen's friendship with Alice. I really liked Ben and I adored the friendship between him and Zander. And I like Alvin showing up with his Gandalf/Dumbledore type wisdom that reveals nothing.
I wasn't sure where this was going to go after the first part of the series wrapped up but this was a solid continuation. 4.5 stars.
There we we many times in this story that buoyed me up. I read great words of advice and witnessed the learning experiences that the characters in this book went through. But the heart wrenching experiences they went through left me literally crying for them. I am very much looking forward to the next book hoping I find some good come from all it. Also, I especially hope they catch the bad guys. Great writing by Ms Puttroff.
I read the first 5 books a few years ago then recommended them to my 14 year old son. He is really enjoying them but wanted me to read them again so we could discuss details I had forgotten. I am enjoying them even more the second time. I love the character development Zander goes through in this book. I'm very happy to see him back in the story!
I know I say this every time I read a book in the Dusk Gate Chronicles but I freaking LOVE this series! I love all the characters, I love the world that the author Breeana Puttroff has created, and I love watching the journey that everyone takes.
I actually consider this a bit of a spin off from the original Dusk Gate Chronicles as it focus's on Zander then on Quinn or William. I was TOTALLY OK with this! It was obvious throughout the 4 books that proceed Cains of Divergence that Zander had a story to tell, and I am so glad that Breeana was able to finally tell it.
Zander is so cute, I liked getting into his head a little and understanding what he thought about the whole Quinn fiasco... he obviously had deep feelings for her, and although I never liked him dating Quinn... he just always seemed to be a bit of a misfit and I always hoped that he would finally realize that something was going on and discover Quinn's new world.
As I said, this book does not really focus on Quinn and William... however everyone is extremely involved. I Still think William may be the sweetest character I have ever read, and Thomas is still in his (understandable) funk from his ordeal in a previous book. Lydia is honestly such an awesome friend and sister.
I really want to say more... but I can't without totally giving everything away. I can however tell you that this book does NOT disappoint. It is just as well written as the previous books, and the story is able to draw you in and hold you captive until you are on the last page and in shock over what just happened... trust me its HUGE!
If you are looking for a good YA Fantasy this is definitely a book I would recommend. It probably can read as a standalone because I think it is more a spin off then an actual 5th book in a series... however I would recommend reading the first books if you haven't already because, well... they are awesome!
Fair warning to those who have not read any of the rest of the series. There will be spoilers and there is not much that I can do about that.
I am sitting here an emotional mess after reading this book, which I read in a whopping less than 12 hours from the time it hit my ereader.
I have followed this series from the very beginning. I was among the vocal group saying that there was no way it could end after book 4. I was not shy or quiet about this. I cried when I thought it was over and I was not ready to say goodbye yet. And again, today, I cry, even knowing that we will probably hear from the characters again.
For those that have followed the series, Canes is an emotional roller coaster that most of us will not have felt prepared for. But is that a bad thing, or a good thing? I haven't decided yet.
In Canes, we see an evolution in relationships, both the ones we are familiar with and the ones that we thought we would never see again.
The sign of a good storyteller is when the story sticks with you and nags at you to revisit it long after you have read it. I suspect Canes, like the rest of the series, is going to be one that will cling to me and I will have to revisit it many times over. The series as a whole has become what I go back to when I hit a reading slump and find myself needing a story to go back to for comfort and familiarity. I hope many of you will feel the same way.
Thank you to the author for a copy to read and review.
In Eirentheos scheint alles friedlich.
Breeana Putroff, what are you doing to me? I have things to do, but I can't get them done because I am way too invested in this series.
I was really nervous about reading this book. I felt like Blooms of Consequence finished up the series nicely, and I was concerned and frustrated about more being added after it was supposed to be the conclusion. I was really pleased with how it worked out, though, well mostly.
I will say if you need a book with a lot of adventure, this is not one that you're going to like. It's more going through the day to day of running a castle than there is action. I enjoyed it, but I could see how action seekers would think it's boring.
I wasn't really surprised with who ends up showing back up in the other world. I was surprised at how well it worked out. There was plenty of appropriately awkward spots, and mostly I felt like the characters really grew a lot from this interaction. There were a few spots in the book where I balled my eyes out.
It's not my favorite in the series, but I really enjoyed it and am going to start on the next book here in a bit.
ok I can't say this was my favorite! but considering none of the other books have been under a 4 stars and this one isn't either, shows just how much I love this series! such an amazing book and I love being able to get lost in this series!
Loved this book! Love the characters. This book in the series is more about Zander, Quinn's ex boyfriend. We see him come to terms with his life and with the hurt emotions he feels after Quinn broke up with him and left without a word! We see the deep love that William and Quinn share and how hard it is to go through the emotions that they do in this story. Having Owen in the mix is great because we see how his little mind works and how intelligent he is even though he is autistic. The drama, love, family, friends and life in general in this new book in the series is fantastic and leaves you wanting more. I laughed, I cried, I felt the pain and the suffering along with the characters. Breeana Putroff is a fantastic author and this series deserves all the devoted fans and followers that it has amassed.
I am assuming most have read the previous books (which were OUTSTANDING!) so I will spare you the summary of the story. I will be honest... I was at first disappointed that this book seemed to be more about Zander than anyone else. Having finished Canes late last night I have changed my mind. His character has added a whole new layer to this series that I really love. We really get to see Zander figure things out and become the man he was meant to be in this book. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book because there is no way there can not be another! Thank you Breeana Puttroff for creating such a fantastic story and world for me to enjoy!
If I could put into words what I feel after reading this I would have to say that I didn't expect for Zander to share in this world with Quinn. I also didn't think that the water disease was something someone would do on purpose, but clearly that is what was happening. I am sad to see Ben go. Linnea and Ben were meant for eachother, but I can also see a spark between Zander and Linnea. I only hope thats what will happen. I am wondering who took Owen home in the end as well and seriously hope this book isn't the end!!! I look forward to more amazing stories to come from this world... Until next time.
I finished Canes of Divergence, and was so sorry that part of the journey was done and I have to wait to read the next book. I've been just sitting here mulling it over in my mind. I would love to go there in real life to visit that special place. It would feel like I was returning to a beloved favorite place to visit friends who I love very much. (Except for a very few people.) If you haven't read this series, I highly recommend it. Thank you, Breeana for such an amzing trip! I can't wait to experience the next part of the journey! :-D
Owen has a dream that Quinn needs help and Zander agrees to help him even after he has been warned about the consequences. Zander slowly accepts the answers to his questions about Quinn's leaving. Of course when you have a kingdom to run there is always something to take care of and keeping loved one safe. If you have read the series you will not be disappointed in Canes. I love this series and could reread them over and over. There were parts were I was happy, laughing, mad and then crying. I really hope there is more books to come.
Okay i was not prepared for one of my favorite characters to die ( i am not going to say the name. I don't want to spoil it!) its heart breaking & i am emotionally messed up! :(((((( I have loved this series from the very beginning & it was easy falling in love with the characters except the villains, its sad to see one of them die yet it was an outstanding book in the series! This is a great outstanding series-if you haven't read it then you should read it! Can't wait till i start on the next book in the series!;)
I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of Canes of Divergence. I read the first five books in the Dusk Gate series in about a week I was so hooked! Canes is amazing! It really expands the Dusk Gate story and develops the characters in ways that are mostly unexpected. I laughed out loud and cried - which is always a sign of a good book to me. I highly recommend Canes to anyone - but read the rest of the series first!
