Preparing Your Daughter for Every Woman's Battle: Creative Conversations about Sexual and Emotional Integrity

Rate this book
Where Will Your Daughter Turn for Answers About Sex?

Long before we may realize it, our daughters are bombarded with messages about sex–from friends, advertisers, media icons, and more. All of this input–along with the whirlwind of emotions that accompany puberty–can leave them confused, filled with unasked questions about boys, dating, sex, and their own value.

While you may believe that your preteen or early adolescent is too young for “the talk,” now is the perfect time for creative conversations about sexuality. By introducing key principles and truths during these teachable years, you can lay a foundation that will help your daughter withstand the inevitable pressures young women face. And you’ll create a lasting bond, establishing yourself as a trustworthy authority who is willing to help her address the sensitive issues in her life.

Recognizing how awkward it can be to confront the topic of sex, author Shannon Ethridge guides you and your daughter through enjoyable yet memorable discussions about sexuality, purity, and dating–leading to a deeper understanding of and appreciation for God’s standards. Preparing Your Daughter for Every Woman’s Battle provides creative tools that will give you the courage and confidence to talk openly and honestly with your daughter–and instill values that will lead her to a lifetime of sexual and emotional integrity.

Shannon is a million-copy best-selling author, speaker, lay counselor, and advocate for healthy sexuality with a master’s degree in counseling/human relations from Liberty University. She has spoken to youth, college students, and adults since 1989 and her passions include:

* Challenging adults and teens to embrace a life of sexual integrity
* Encouraging married couples in their pursuit of sexual fulfillment
* Counseling women who have looked for love in all the wrong places
* Equipping parents to instill sexual values in children at an early age

Her passion for healthy sexuality was ignited as a result of her own painful experiences. After being sexually abused by uncles during puberty and surviving many painful years as a promiscuous teenager, Shannon sought to overcome her past and become the faithful wife she desperately wanted to be. Six months of individual and group counseling gave Shannon the confidence to declare her graduation from the school of hard knocks, and she began speaking boldly and bluntly about the benefits of sexual integrity and sexual intimacy within marriage. She has since taught and counseled thousands of teens, single adults, and married couples over the past decade. Shannon is the Gold-Medallion Award-winning author of 18 books, including the best-selling Every Woman’s Battle series (WaterBrook Press, 2003-2006) which has been printed in 11 different languages, the 5-book Loving Jesus Without Limits series (WaterBrook Press, 2007), and her new book for the mainstream market, The Sexually Confident Wife (Random House, September 2008).

Shannon has been featured on the cover of Today’s Christian Woman Magazine and is a frequent guest on such national radio & television shows as Focus on the Family, The 700 Club, Life Today with James & Betty Robison, FamilyLife Today with Dennis Rainey, and New Life Live! with Stephen Arterburn. She has also been published in magazines such as Focus on the Family, Brio, Christian Single, Discipleship Journal, LifeWay, and Enrichment Journal.

I am currently reading this with my 9 year old daughter and so far it is wonderful. I remember as a child getting most of my ideas about sex and sexuality from friends and the television. This is a spiritually based book and explains the gift it is to be a little girl and eventually a woman. It also provides creative ideas and activities to teach girls about the changes their bodies will go through. For those of you with sons, there is also a son's version.

Get this book. Have the hard conversations. Don't let her learn from someone else. You don't have to agree with everything - just have the conversation!

I am currently reading the second half of this book with my 14 year old daughter(step - here on our I will refer to her as my daughter) and I have to say it has really opened up conversations I don't think would have otherwise happened. She lives with us full-time, so it is important for me to make sure I have these conversations with her. I couldn't figure out the best way to do this and someone I was talking to recommended this book, the others in the series as well as the ones for your son and men. I haven't read the others yet, but I am finding this to be a great way to get some deep conversations going. I don't know that I would be comfortable reading it with her if she was 8 or 9, but maybe I would consider the maturity level of the child, but I would definitely recommend reading it by the age of 12. I'm a little late and wish I had read it a couple years ago. I won't give details of our conversations but I highly recommend this book.

I read this book for some insight for a girls Bible study I will be teaching, and I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard some good things about other books in this series so I was happy when my sister-in-law said I could borrow this from her. For the most part, this is a very good book that gives parents (or others working with younger girls) both insight and a plan of action for addressing a very sensitive and critical topic - sexual purity. The next to last chapter references doctrinal issues which I do not agree with (eg, inherited sinful nature, faith-only salvation - see Romans 5:12, Acts 2:38, and 1 Peter 3:21 for God's answer to these doctrines). With a caveat about this section, this is definitely a book I would recommend to others.

This book was okay. The book written for young men was better in that it broke the book into three parts. One for Dad to read by himself, one for dad and a younger child to read together and one more section for Dad and an older teen to read together. This book does NOT do that. As a result, some of the information is too much for younger girls. I would recommend Vickie Courtney's books instead. Her magazine style books cover the material in a much better, age appropriate fashion. That said, this book did contain information that I wish to share with my child. But we will not be reading it cover to cover.

I would heartily recommend this book to read with your pre-teen daughter. I won't give away anything for fear that my daughter will kill me - but I will say that, although we didn't necessarily agree with everything presented, it was an excellent way to continue the dialogue.

I read this with my 9 year old daughter. Higly recommend this book if you have a daugher between the ages of 8 and 18. Reading it together also builds a memory and a body between you and your daughter.

Read this separately with each of my daughters. Great way to cover a lot of stuff without you remembering everything you need to cover.

So far this book is great. I am so glad to have a book I can read slowly with my daughter, yet gives me advice in my own section. Grateful my friend let me borrow. :)
