John Freeman is an award-winning writer and book critic who has written for numerous publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal. Freeman won the 2007 James Patterson Pageturner Award for his work as the president of the National Book Critics Circle, and was the editor of Granta from 2009 to 2013. He lives in New York City, where he teaches at NYU and edits a new literary biannual called Freeman's.

O adevarata inspiratie pentru viitoare lecturi 😊

Am aflat lucruri noi despre autori pe care am avut deja placerea sa ii citesc si am descoperit autori despre care nu stiam absolut nimic - mi-a placut faptul ca structura si modul de redare a interviurilor au variat, cumva adaptate si la personalitatile prezentate.

Em 400 páginas (com muitas em branco e 56 com um desenho que retrata cada autor em estudo) e através do resumo de entrevistas a cerca de meia centena de escritores, é suposto ficarmos a saber aquela cangalhada toda? Hum... Se sim, a mim escapou-me...

O primeiro autor a ser apresentado é John Freeman e, confesso, fiquei logo de pé atrás. O senhor descobriu o gosto pela leitura, aos vinte anos, com John Updike, tornando-se uma obsessão tão violenta que colecionou quase todas as primeiras edições dos seus livros - "mais de cinquenta, ao todo" -.
Como ele lia muito (só Updike, claro) começou a ter discussões com a namorada. Então, tomou uma decisão: em vez de ler, casar. Vendeu os "Updikes" todos e comprou um anel de noivado.
Um ano depois divorciou-se. Saiu do tribunal e foi entrevistar... quem? O Updike!

Cada "ficha" inclui local de nascimento e morada atual do escritor; umas curiosidades sobre a sua vida e ideias; a sinopse de algumas obras; de alguns refere ainda a roupa que vestiam na entrevista (muito importante) e pouco mais.

Até metade li tudo com muita atenção, a partir daí, empanturrada com tanto conhecimento, li mais ou menos...

Gosto muito de ler obras sobre livros e escritores porque, além de desfrutar de uma boa leitura, aprendo sempre muito, mas com este nem uma coisa nem outra. (O Enrique Vila-Matas habituou-me mal...)

As duas estrelas, em vez de uma, são porque fiquei com muita vontade de ler o Updike... e também pela entrevista ao David Foster Wallace - uma estrela que Freeman não conseguiu apagar...

"Il libro per chi ama i libri." ci dice il retro della copertina, ed è proprio vero. Questo libro ha ampliato immensamente e pericolosamente (per il mio conto in banca) la mia già gigantesca wishlist.
Piacevole, ben scritto e, sopratutto, interessante. Sono ritratti, visioni, sbirciatine veloci (purtroppo), dei più brillanti scrittori contemporanei. Assolutamente da leggere.

Um livro em que tive a possibilidade de penetrar na mente de alguns escritores de que gosto e outros que ainda não tive a oportunidade de ler, em contexto de entrevista (sempre habilmente conduzidas por John Freeman).

Mais importante de tudo: catapultou-me para a procura/descoberta de livros que nem sabia que existiam. E é assim que a chama se mantém sempre acesa.

Este cavalheiro é diretor da Granta. Só por isso já merece a nossa estima.
Em capítulos curtos, dá-nos uma sinopse da obra de vários escritores misturada com excertos das entrevistas que conduziu ao longo dos anos. Se, por um lado, tem a virtude de despertar o interesse por alguns que podemos não conhecer, por outro, tem o defeito de ser uma visão fortemente pessoal e reduzidíssima.
Para quem gosta de antologias.

Da li su svi ovi intervjui sami po sebi dobri i kvalitetni? Pa, rekla bih da nisu i da Frimen često baš i nije pričao sa svim ovim autorima o bog zna čemu bitnom.

Međutim, glavna stvar koju sam izvukla iz ove knjige i zbog koje mi je i bila zabavna jeste to što služi kao svojevrsni (skromni) vodič kroz savremenu prozu. Spisak knjiga za čitanje mi se u međuvremenu duplirao i bilo mi je interesantno da čujem nešto što do sad nisam znala o književnicima i književnicama koji se ovde pojavljuju, a koje sam već ranije imala prilike da čitam.

(Takođe, da se ne lažemo, da je nisam dobila za džabe i da mi nije bila pri ruci u momentu kad kod sebe nisam imala ništa drugo za čitanje, verovatno bi mi blejala još neko vreme na polici.)

How to Read a Novelist is a collection of interviews conducted by John Freeman with a variety of contemporary authors over a period of 10 years. Some of the writers are Haruki Murakami, Aleksandr Hemon, and John Updike. Each interview is preceded by a short introduction describing the writer and his or her works. The interview itself is two or three pages. The focus of the interview is as varied as the writer being interviewed.

I found this an ideal book to have around for when I only have a few minutes to read (I hate to miss any opportunity!). The only problem is that once I started reading, I didn't want to stop.

The interviews were filled with fascinating quotes and interesting apercus. I strongly recommend the book for anyone who loves books and authors.

There are real dangers to reading a book like this - the biggest being the length that your TBR can grow to. I have taken an oath to not make my TBR any longer than it is - so I have had to add a new exclusive shelf just for the books I want to read from this book - And NOOOOOO this is not cheating. I am sitting with bated breath waiting for the first of these to arrive but lets get back to this book.

I am not sure it gives me great tips on writing or literary style there are some interesting quotes from authors sprinkled throughout and some interesting facts about how they write but i suspect writing is much more diverse an occupation than be covered in a book like this. I enjoyed the potted biographies and one tip about re reading books has inspired me to think about giving books a second go.

Titlul este înșelător. Cartea nu prea are sfaturi despre lectură sau despre scriere, ci mai mult prezentări scurte ale unor autori contemporani populari și fragmente de discuție cu aceștia. E ok, dar prezentările sunt mai scurte decât ce se găsește pe wikipedia, iar discuțiile mai reduse decât interviurile obișnuite din ziare și reviste.

Nu o recomand.

Full disclosure: John Freeman is a friend.

“How To Read A Novelist” by John Freeman is a warmly written review of modern literature. In the last 15 years, John has interviewed the literati and rising lit stars of our generation, a contemporary canon, from Salman Rushdie to David Mitchell to Margaret Atwood to Doris Lessing to Haruki Murakami to Mohsin Hamid and so on. If someone has published something marvelous in the last decade and half, chances are John has met its author on intimate and literary terms.

HtRaN is a collection of his interviews/essays, and not only do they give cultural, historical, political, feminist, and literary context, they are beautifully written, giving a sense of not just the author, but what their books might mean to us, and this more mysterious thing, what their work means to themselves. What it means to be a writer, and in turn, a reader.

I love John’s language and his articulate and encompassing perspective. Take for example his description of Edmund White as having “a gentle colossal intelligence,” his writing with “rivetless construction, as if it were built in a wind tunnel.” How inventive, and how clear, all at once.

I would have liked the essays to be longer and more in depth. I know there’s much more that John could have written, but perhaps some of that depth was sacrificed for the incredible range of writers reviewed. The good thing about that is if you have a short attention span like I do, then you will be able to rip through the essays right quick.

That all said, the essays in HtRaN will give you a window into the work and world of your favourite contemporary author, and perhaps inspiration to pick up something new.

This is no James Wood- , or John Sutherland-, or Thomas C. Foster- , or Mortimer Adler-sort of "how to" book. It's a collection of super-short previously-published overviews of 50+ well-known authors' careers attached to re-worked interviews/conversations Freeman has conducted since the early 2000s. It contains standard biographical data that only someone very young and/or completely unfamiliar with contemporary fiction would find new, and much of Freeman's writing was stale, trite, and hackneyed.

While she writes much of enclosed communities, [Toni] Morrison's community of readers has been expanding, especially since Oprah Winfrey chose a book of Morrison's not once, not twice, but four times for her book club.

And, on David Foster Wallace's use of a fork rather than chopsticks in a Manhattan sushi bar:

Many readers would be inclined to forgive this culinary lapse because of Wallace's genius. Indeed, in a city not often cowed by literary reputations, the air flickers when he blows into town.

I don't really think it's a culinary lapse. Why the "Indeed"? And why does the air "flicker"? I don't know.

This fun and informative collection of author interviews hit my sweet spot. John Freeman introduces each author interview with an insightful summary of the author's work to date, and the essays are as diverse as the people being interviewed. The essays are short, but this is not a book to read in one sitting. Dip in and out. Read up on your fave authors first, or start at with authors new to you. This is a book I will certainly dip into again. Most of the authors interviewed were not new to me, but there where several I had not heard of before. Oh and yes, my TBR pile just got longer. Thanks John!

I am a bit disappointed. Judging by the title, the blurb on the cover, and the excerpts on the back, I thought this book was going to be much more instructive. This book is helpful to writers only in an incidental way.

If you're thinking about reading this book, you should know it reads more like a collection of journalistic author profiles than any sort of guide to approaching the texts of various authors. If that sounds okay to you, than you'll enjoy this book.

These essay/interviews provide a great introduction to unfamiliar authors or a more in-depth look at well-known literary giants. Be aware that there are several factual inaccuracies (such as birth years). This book could work as inspiration for writers or a book list for readers.

Sempre que posso, tento separar a obra do seu respetivo autor. Há situações em que isso, para mim, é impossível (exemplo recente do que sucedeu com a Marion Zimmer Bradley), mas as crenças e opiniões de um autor não costumam ser decisivos para decidir se quero ou não ler um livro seu. Ainda assim, vi este livro como uma oportunidade interessante para descobrir novos autores e conhecer um pouco melhor aqueles de quem já li obras ou pretendo ler.

John Freeman é um crítico literário que foi, ao longo dos anos, entrevistando vários autores e decidiu juntar neste livro perfis/entrevistas de vários deles. Temos vários laureados com o Prémio Nobel e outros prémios literários importantes, a maioria deles autores quase unanimente reconhecidos pela sua importância na literatura, ainda que nem sempre reconhecidos como tal pelo público e pela quantidade de livros vendidos. Cada escritor tem direito a uma ilustração, uma mini-biografia e um texto onde Freeman traça um breve perfil do escritor, consusbstanciado nas impressões captadas no momento em que entrevista o autor. Os “perfis” são assim, na sua maioria, mais avaliações de caráter da parte do autor do livro do que propriamente citações dos próprios escritores.

Interessante é a palavra que escolheria para descrever este livro, na medida em que abriu portas a autores desconhecidos (para mim) e deu-me vontade de regressar a autores que já conhecia. Contudo, não li todos os perfis com o mesmo interesse e achei mesmo que vários deles teriam ganho com um maior desenvolvimento, para além das 3-4 páginas que a maioria tem. Apesar do mérito deste livro, não consegui deixar de sentir, de acordo com os meus gostos pessoais, um certo snobismo literário. Digo isto porque há, da parte do autor, um notório desinteresse por fenómenos de vendas e/ou de género. Lembro-me assim, de repente, de J.K. Rowling e de George R.R. Martin.

Uma nota final para a editora Tinta da China: os meus parabéns pela edição cuidada, tanto em termos de materiais utilizados, como a nível de grafismo e de alguns detalhes que tornam este livro algo mais do que o conteúdo que traz dentro de si.

I really, really enjoyed this book, which is full of short portraits of about 50 authors from interviews that John Freeman has done over the years. Freeman is himself quite an excellent writer, which significantly enhances the experience of learning about the authors in question. I especially enjoyed the interviews of John Irving (one of my favorite authors, although Freeman seems to subtly communicate that he is less than impressed with him) and Susanna Clarke (another favorite - her interview is particularly well-written and clever). This book is best read in small increments for maximum enjoyment, and is particularly great if you're looking for some new authors to enjoy - I got a lot of new recommendations from his interviews.

Today I have had an epiphany. Reading is also an act of literary creation. We are living for such a short brief moment until we die for the rest of time, reading passively is just something I don't have time time for. This timeless piece of wisdom came to me upon finally finishing How to Read a Novelist where the author Freeman reports on having the privilege of meeting some of the greatest literary artists whose canvas was a critically acclaimed literary novel, that long sprawling goal of every aspiring writer dreaming of someday publishing their endeavor at the Great American Novel.

My endeavors at such a lofty goal have proven that not everyone is blessed with the ability to write fiction and novelists are special. The writers Freeman meet are all truly exceptional masters of the craft of novel writing, all teetering on a line between being literary artists studied in English departments across the world, beloved by readers the world over, and also at the same time being rock stars of world literature. How much would any of the writers Freeman meets on his travels writing for stylish newspapers and magazines get paid to give interviews like a rock star, or to speak at university seminars or give speeches at literary festivals? Freeman takes the time to capture the candid human side of these much-admired avant-garde icons of literature. Each chapter features a piece written upon meeting one such literary rock star from the world over, for example, Haruki Murakami, Ngugi wa Thiongo, Salman Rushdie, Orhan Pamuk, Edmundo Paz Soldan, Kiran Desai, Mohsin Hamid, A.S Byatt, Geraldine Brooks, you name a writer who has won the hearts of readers all of the world by writing a literary novel and they are probably featured here, and of course a lot of stand-out exceptional American novelists like Johnathan Safran Foer, Joyce Carol Oates, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jenifer Egan, just to name a few, and even some more classic authors like E.L Doctorow, John Updike, Tom Wolf and the enigmatic David Foster Wallace.

Freeman is living the dream job of any writer. I got the feeling he is kind of like Patrick Fugit's character in Almost Famous living out the fantasy of every rock and roll fan who dreamt of writing for a rock and roll magazine. Instead of The Paris Review style interviews reporting on every question asked and how they were answered, Freeman lives in the moment making character sketches capture thoughtful, meditative and candid moments with each artist. Each chapter also comes with a bewilderingly accurate caricature of the author's facial features in a simple yet striking way.

Freeman exhibits both the human side and the artistic administrative side of these literary icons who each reign over a kind of literary empire in a way. Meeting them, Freeman does not the minute details of their interactions or share the conversations they had, but gives an account of their process in writing as well as an idea about the kind of human they are which gave me an impression of how that has allowed them to be as successful as they have managed. For these creatives the meaning of a literary life meant a life as a vibrant public figure in a world where everyone knows your name, but at the same time are under the microscope for critical scrutiny, however, to be fair, the authors in this book are all authors who have enjoyed critical and commercial acclaim.

Goodreads being a community built around reading and readers, I was excited to write a review about this book about reading, because it shows how Freeman has made a career of creative reading, and reading is also an act of literary creation. Reading passively is a waste of the precious time we have on this earth, and Freeman doesn't seem to take that responsibility lightly. The writer's Freeman features have all achieved having a cultural impact on the world at large through their writing, the art of writing novels, which is what most people read when they read. If you ask someone what they are reading, they won't ever say, "I am reading a play by Moliere" or I am reading "The Collected Poetry of Emily Dickinson", people usually respond by sharing what novels they are reading. In this age, novels are the premier form of reading material that people who read engage in. This is not a book about craft, it is more like short little profiles on prolific writers that evoke an immortal version of the writers through the page as they would be as if they came to you in a dream or were a character in a novel.

Knjiga Kako čitati pisca prolegomena je u zanat spisateljstva, zapravo više kompendijum u kojem se sukusiraju razgovori, promišljanja, teme i crtice iz biografija velikog broja pisaca. Ono što se nahodi ispod krabulje svakog pisca je čovjek koji se otkriva u životnoj punini. Freeman je intervjuisao i razgovarao s mnogim znamenitim piscima današnjice – Jonathanom Franzenom, Jonathanom Safran Foerom, Orhanom Pamukom, Toni Morrison, Harukijem Murakamijem, Mo Jenom, Margaret Atwood, Johnom Updikeom, itd. Svaki od njih nudi nešto drugačije i tipično svoje, što u ljudskom, što u spisateljskom vidu. Čak i jedan od sinopsisa knjige veli nešto slično, naime

Ova knjiga je zbirka, kako smo kazali, Freemanovih intervjua/eseja, i ne samo da daju kulturni, povijesni, politički, feministički i književni kontekst, oni su lijepo napisani, donoseći osjećaj ne samo o autorima, već i o tome šta bi nam njihove knjige mogle značiti, te još veće otajstvo, šta njihov rad znači njima samima. Šta znači biti pisac, a zatim i čitatelj. Podjednako je teško biti dobar čitatelj, kao i dobar spisatelj.

Mnogo bi studiozniji projekat od ove knjige ispao da su eseji duži, uneseniji i dublji. Znam da postoji još mnogo toga što je John mogao napisati, ali možda je dio te dubine žrtvovan zbog nevjerovatnog raspona recenziranih pisaca. Ako ništa, već samo to je dobar razlog da se kroz ovu knjigu prođe, lepršavo i bez zamora, a da se dozna za mnogo pisaca koji su u sjeni naših spoznajnih i doznajnih horizonata.
Uz sve rečeno, eseji u Kako čitati pisca pružit će vam prozor u rad i svijet savremenog autora, a možda i inspiraciju da odaberete nešto novo. I to je jedna od „opasnosti“ ove knjige – što može povećati, produžiti i proširiti našu možda ionako poveliku listu knjiga za pročitati.

Am reușit în sfârșit să termin de citit această carte de interviuri primită de la Editura Vellant. Mă bucur că am parcurs punctual fiecare interviu în parte pentru că, așa cum ne urează Anca Fronescu la sfârșit, chiar am reușit să descopăr mulți autori noi și interesanți, nu toți însă traduși deja în limba română.

Cartea începe cu povestea personală a autorului în ceea ce privește fascinația sa pentru marele John Updike. De aici reiese cum nu trebuie să ne abordăm idolii și să rămânem fideli sinelui nostru propriu. Interviurile nu sunt structurate în stil clasic, cu întrebări și răspunsuri (deși sunt câteva și în acest fel), ci scrise pe paragrafe în care autorul descrie împrejurările în care se afla cu respectivul scriitor, gesturile acestuia, cât și multe dintre răspunsurile lui mai degrabă sub forma unui discurs fără public. La începutul fiecărui interviu avem o scurtă biografie a fiecărui scriitor în parte, lucru care ajută mai bine la plasarea acestuia în timp (deși majoritatea au undeva pe la 60-70 de ani la momentul interviului), cât și înțelegerea background-ului care i-a influențat scrierile. Ultimul interviu datează din anul 2013, însă majoritatea sunt luate cu ceva ani buni înainte de 2010.

Am cumpărat deja multe titluri scrise de autori despre care am citit în această carte, deci se poate spune că a avut un real impact asupra mea. Philip Roth și Doris Lessing se regăsesc deja pe rafturile mele, urmând să fie acompaniați în viitorul apropiat de Michael Cunningham (mi-a plăcut foarte mult filmul făcut după cartea sa cu același titlu, O casă la capătul lumii, pe care l-am văzut acum mulți ani), Jennifer Egan sau Amy Tan. La final, există și o listă cu toți autorii și cărțile lor traduse în română care m-a încântat foarte tare; o voi folosi pe post de listă de romandări, la fel precum cea de la sfârșitul cărții lui Stephen King, Misterul Regelui. Despre scris. Unele interviuri sunt mai scurte, altele mai lungi, unii autori se confesează mai profund, alții vorbesc strict despre cărțile lor, însă este foarte interesantă această diversitate de personalități și culturi. Cea mai nedumerită m-a lăsat interviul cu Ayu Utami, care nu a spus mare lucru, creând și mai mult mister în jurul cărților sale astfel.

Consider Cum să citești un romancier un fel de ghid pentru cititorii interesați de a parcurge mai întâi operele unora dintre cei mai consacrați autori de pe întregul glob (nu doar englezi și americani). Toți cei menționați aici sunt demni de atenție, nu doar datorită premiilor pe care le-au câștigat, ci a simplului fapt că ei ca artiști au „acel ceva” care reiese dintre pagini și te atrage ca un magnet asupra lucrărilor publicate. Recomand pentru crearea unei mai bune impresii de ansamblu asupra autorilor acestui secol și cunoașterea frugală a fiecăruia dintre ei.
