The creator of a Kiss Like This offers an exuberant concept book about the irresistible sounds that animals make. The perfect baby gift!
Different kinds of animals say hello in their own way. And who better than Mary Murphy to introduce their voices to the youngest of listeners? Full of funny adjectives and sound words, this charming companion to Mary Murphy’s A Kiss Like This is an ideal read-aloud for the very youngest of listeners and is sure to engage babies as they first learn to talk.
Children's author and illustrator Mary Murphy enchants even the youngest of readers with her bold style, combining eye-catching graphics and a bouncy text that seemingly jump off the pages.
Mary Murphy has an advanced diploma in Visual Communications and has written and illustrated a number of children's books, including her lift-the-flap, pull-the-tab book about friendship, ROXIE AND BO TOGETHER. In addition to creating children's books, she teaches illustration. The author-illustrator lives in Galway, Ireland.
I've loved Mary Murphy ever since I found "I Like it When" and read it over and over to my infant son. This one would be perfect for a toddler storytime--or even a Baby Time. Lot's of opportunity to make fun sounds and noises as the animals say hi to each other. In thinking of all the preschoolers I visit, I think that this may be a bit simple for them--which is too bad because they would love all the funny sounds! This would be great to share one on one with the young child in your life!
although it features chicks on the front page, we don't hear from them later on, chickens though yes. adorable. sparkley font. big messy pictures. great for baby or toddler storytime. kids can make the noises with you! (hard to turn the half pages though)
Cute story about how animals say hello. The half pages offer a fun surprise for younger readers. This title is great for toddlers but could also be used with babies. So much fun making the animal sounds!
Summary: How do us humans say hello? How do animals say hello? What does it sound like? Say Hello Like This is a cute little book that shows how different animals say hello to each other like dogs, cats, frogs, chickens, beetles, and donkeys. I recommend this book for toddlers to pre kindergarten. It has bright beautiful pictures that kids will love. There are small flaps inside each big page to keep kids engaged in the reading to see how the animals say hello! I enjoyed hearing the animals say hello.
Activity: As I am reading the book in whole group I can ask them, "how do you think the dog will say hello?" and then I will turn the page and have students repeat how the dog said hello, and do that for each animal. I will also have them use higher level thinking and think of different animals that are not in the book and think how they say hello. After they think of some new animals I would have them pick their favorite animal and draw it and show the class and say out loud the noise how that animal they drew says hello.
How do different animals say hello? This may be quite the important question that young readers who love animals have. And this book has the answers! Each page has an illustration of two animals who are about to say hello (two dogs, two cats, two chickens, two beetles, etc.). Then there is a smaller page (it is almost like a little lift-the-flap flap) that can be turned and the two animals are then saying “hello” with the various animal onomatopoeia. (Seriously, this seems to be the week to talk about onomatopoeia!) This is a fun way for kids to say different animal sounds and enjoy turning the smaller pages to see how the illustrations change. Both of which I know toddlers especially will love. Fun book!
Hearing and learning animal sounds is a fun way to develop phonological awareness, the ability to hear the smaller sounds in words. "Say Hello Like This" has colorful pictures with split pages and simple but entertaining language just right for reading aloud to toddlers. My "Onesies" class loved this. Be prepared to ham it up a bit as you read-and it is ok to change the animal sounds to ones you are used to, like "woof woof" instead of "bow wow".
Cute story for younger readers. Author uses words to describe how an animal talks. For example, a cats' hello is "prissy and proud"... a donkey's hello is "silly and happy". Good intro to adjectives. I like how the words really do go with the description of the animal's personality and way they "talk". The 1/2 flaps on each page make it fun to see the description then a picture of the animals "talking".
With bright, colorful illustrations the reader is introduced to the way a variety of animals say hello. Dogs, cats, even a donkey all say hello. This book is filled with animal sounds and opportunities for interaction with a story time audience. This was their favorite book at story time today. Everyone laughed out loud, especially at the donkey greeting...and had great fun chiming in with animal sounds.
This book is great for encouraging talking with children. There are smaller pages within bigger pages that help with reading skills, add to print motivation, and keep the reader engaged. It is especially fun to learn how other animals say 'hello.' Extremely interactive and excellent for ECE readers.
Things get really loud when all the animals in this picture book meet up and greet each other. A dog, a cat, a beetle, and even a donkey get in on the action in pages that allow readers to flip a shortened page and see more. Young readers will have fun emulating all the sounds that fill the book's pages.
LOVE THIS can't wait to get it out at Toddler Time! I think I'll save it for the spring session. Too cute, and lots of opportunity for loud animal noisemaking.
4/3/14: I read this book today at Toddler Time - it went really well! We counted animals, called out colors, and made all the animal noises. Then we shouted a big group HELLO! at the end.
Rhyming text introduces animals and their greetings in lift-the-flap style. I like the rhythm and bounce to this text. The concept has been done many times, many ways, but this one stands out in a splashy fun way.
Ink and watercolor artwork finished digitally are vivid and inviting. Perfect read aloud for babies, toddlers, and PreK+.
First of all, there are sparkly parts in this book. Second of all, there are dutch-door type half pages that change the illustrations on each page. Other good things include funny animals and animal sounds, and funny adjectives. I like this book a lot, will definitely use for little kids, for first storytime. Great for young kids.
This is a great book to read to young children when they are just starting to get squirmy. There is action and noise, it is short, and the illustrations are bright and colorful. The flaps appear to be sturdy and I hope this book will last a long time.
A great and lively edition for any "How we say hello" or "animal" story time. Ecstatic illustrations and lively text makes this one a charmer for a crowd.
I'd probably substitute some of the animal sounds with ones I prefer, like "woof" instead of "bow-wow," though when it's the kids answering, the specific sound doesn't necessarily matter.
