The story starts in 1949. Ros Rainey lives in post war Edinburgh with her sister Chrissie , widowed mother Flo and brother Dougal. Not all goes smoothly in the Rainey household as the siblings never know what to expect from one day to the next with their mother who has some mental issues. Ros enjoys working in a lawyer’s property office. She has always been interested in houses and dreams one day of owning a beautiful home of her own. But then unexpectedly she falls in love with Jamie Shield, her boss. It looks like a blissful future awaits. Does their romance have a chance? What does the future hold for Ros? While Ros tries to sort out what her future holds, Dougal has made his own decision. Not everyone is happy about his choice, especially not his mother. And what impact will this have on her health? How will his decision affect the rest of the family?
This is a sweet and gentle read with likeable characters. It was easy to empathise with Ros and her family members and their issues. An enjoyable and engaging read that deals with family, grief, depression, love and loss. Recommended.
