No.
No.
No.

Just..............just .......URGH!
URGHRUGFDSJDSAHGFALJBVSAOIHDFNSA
Okay I'm making this sound like it was a bad book. Trust me, 5 stars and Theresa, hard to come by. BUT THIS THING WAS LIKE . . . . . . . jeez, this is the number one romantic manga.
I mean other romantic mangas, it doesn't really show this much about a girl's feelings, it's just dramatic. And romance isn't the big part.
Like romance would just be a side thing in the story.
BUT THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.

BUT . . . BUT THE FEELING IT GAVE ME AT THE END WAS NOT
FREAKING
BEAUTIFUL.

NOT freaking beautiful.

A...............
((*Whispers)) No...NO DON'T SAY IT THERESA!!!!!

A
CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, it really looked like it was going to be settled in this book and it wouldn't pull at my heart with a freaking cliffhanger. I was PRAYING
"No cliffhanger, please let us know, please please please please please please please--"
OF COURSE MY PRAYER WAS . . . . . . . . . . . . . WAS OUT OF VAIN.

SORRY PEOPLE, this will most definitely have spoilers in it and really...this is the sort of story you DON'T want to be spoiled with.
Just...PLEASE LEAVE IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS YET.
Unless you don't like the smell of books or you're too lazy to hop on mangafox (I could do that to relieve this horrible cliffhanger thing because volume 10 is already on there but JEEZ i can't because I just love pages more...), or you're just...you just don't like stories.
SPOILED MILK! (*makes a grouchy face)

So yeah. Spoilers ahead...

I already knew that Ren would confess to Ninako. I ALREADY KNEW. I just hoped that it wouldn't leave off a cliffhanger in the end. Something cliche like

Ren: Ninako . . . . . . . . please be my girlfriend.
Ninako: (GASP)
*Bottom of page: END OF VOL 9/END OF SOME READER'S LIVES BECAUSE IT IS A CLIFFHANGER WHETHER OR NOT THEY SAW IT COMING

But when I read that scene . . . where Ren confessed to Ninako and she responded . . . I was like "WHOO! There's not gonna be a cliffhanger!"
And then the end of the book smacked me across the face.

But still though. The way that Ninako responded--JEEZ! SHE needs a slap in the face.
(*Conscience: HEY, Theresa! THERESA! This is a review, not a rant about characters! Especially characters you think are so ultra cute . . .)
Right right right, conscience . . .
So here we go:

1. I do love this story. This entire story. This . . . . . . it is weaved beautifully, and is very relatable, and even if its not, you can learn a lot about love in this book.
Remember when Taylor Swift used to write a bunch of romance music and there was like a Taylor Swift song for EVERY SINGLE FREAKING KIND OF RELATIONSHIP?!
Well this is even better than those Taylor Swift songs . . .
WAY.
WAY.
WAY BETTER.

2. The art is still as stunning as ever. I should probably keep copies of Strobe Edge just a little longer so I can get some art tips from this lady BECAUSE SHE IS AN AMAZING ARTIST.
LOOK AT THEIR HAIR.
Their eyes . . . their emotions . . . their souls . . . . (*sigh)

3. THIS BOOK ISN'T A CLICHE SHOUJO.

These girls . . . these CHARACTERS . . . they all look as if they have a personality. A BELIEVEABLE personality, you almost wish they were real.
You can see them! YOU CAN IMAGINE THEM! IN JAPAN! Living out this story in real life right this second!
YOU WISH they were real.

Now volume 9 was beautiful. But I do want to give some advice. Since love has slapped me in the face numerous times, but has also held me close to its chest and clutched gently onto my heartbeat (as well as strangled it, but let us continue . . .)

1. Ninako tries to deny her feelings--both so that her friends don't get torn apart between her and because she wants them both to be happy.

I don't think it is easy to be in a love triangle at all. In fact IT SUCKS.
This isn't the love triangle where she has to choose between them. We ALL know she's got the sweltering hots for Ren, but she has a personality.
She doesn't just spend only 2 pages rejecting Ando.
And Andou being the very determined guy who TRULY LOVES NINAKO and isn't just there for drama (although he causes a lot of drama) doesn't just give up on her.
But in a situation where she knows that Andou likes her and that she likes Ren, and the fact that she doesn't think her feelings are going anywhere to getting Ren to becoming her boyfriend, she wants to at least let them both be friends.
Because yes. It sucks to be the girl in the middle.
And yes. It is dramatic.
But she handles it. It is clear what her intentions are.
She's not indecisive like many unstable characters. She's small, BUT SHE'S STRONG.
And her unselfishness pretty much makes her a more likable person--who really does care for the people around her.

THE ADVICE THOUGH, as you can see here, is that NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES NINAKO TRIES TO DENY HER LOVE, IT WON'T GO AWAY.
Love is a bug.
It's stuck in your heart like a parasite.
It'll suck the life right out of you. But it can also help you live.
It's love.
Once you got it, you're stuck. Once you're touched, you're touched--like a white wall that has been splattered with bright colored paint.
And sure you can paint over that, but unless you paint layer upon layer upon layer, the bright colors are just gonna bleed through and they're not going to go away.
LIKE LOVE.

Just take that into mind.
If it's hard to get over somebody--or you CAN'T get over them, the feeling is genuine.
I mean you can't easily break through a genuine diamond right?

2. Andou constantly fights for a girl that is in love with someone else.
And it really sucks being in his spot, I bet. He keeps trying and he keeps persisting. And he keeps telling Ninako his feelings, and half of me finds him a little . . . a little naiive about that kind of thing (explain in a second . . .) but another part wants to tear up because Ninako's feelings for Ren are stubborn and they're not gonna go anywhere.
Andou is naive because he kept constantly asking her, "How do you want me to love you" or "Choose me instead".
Which makes me want to cry because he is willing to do ANYTHING.....

But the sad thing is if Ninako really did give up on Ren to choose Andou, it'd be like Andou was her second choice, or her safety net.
And trust me, I've personally been classified or looked at as a SECOND CHOICE. And I did not like it one bit.
Because if that first choice were to suddenly become free and available and wanting them, they'd want to be with them, not with me.
It's heartbreaking. It's awful.
So when Andou was begging her to be with him, part of it just didn't make sense.
I mean I see how he wanted her so badly. But wouldn't it hurt him to know that he was chosen by a girl who gave up on her first love and fell into his arms because those were the next ones available?
DARN ANDOU! Don't be controlled by a freaking girl like that!
Some girls really take advantage of that (guys too of course). It's horrible.

So honestly. HONESTLY. If I were Andou, I wouldn't want to offer Ninako to give up on Ren and go to him instead.
I would want to try and make her fall in love with me so that I become her first choice.
But I wouldn't try to pull her out of her decision. Because real genuine I-choose-you-first love should come most naturally and in the most purest form.

3. Mao.
Mao is beautiful. She's pretty. She looks so pretty.
However . . . . . . . . . . . . however . . . . . . . . . . . . I just . . . can't forgive her for cheating on Andou.
I feel that I can understand Andou's pain. And that I know what it is like to be used.
It is heartbreaking. You know--being with your second choice, but still wanting your first.
I like Ninako because she KNEW not to choose Andou while she still liked Ren.
Mao....Mao chose differently.

The lesson learned from her: You can fall in love with someone as you're dating them, is true. IS VERY VERY TRUE.
I mean think about adults and their meeting a soul mate online and go on a date with them--or a blind date or a . . . I don't know. It happens. Not all relationships have love first and then relationships.
Some relationships have lust first and then love.
Or like first and then love.
Or arranged-marriage trapped feeling first and then gradual love--like in Stepping On Roses.

(*sigh) Lots of emotion in this book. It is heartbeating and made me kick my feet and squirm A LOT.
Love isn't easy. Love sucks a lot actually!

For Ren, he's surrounded by girls who claim to love him but they really don't.
For Ninako, she is in love with a guy and it won't go away at her will.
For Andou, he keeps being stuck in second and that just really sucks.
For Mao, YOU KNOW WHAT SHE PROBABLY DESERVED WHAT SHE GOT.
Even for Sayuri and Daiki their relationship was filled with drama.
Love is NEVER A PEACEFUL THING. It's like a never ending ocean that doesn't sit still.
Waves move because the earth doesn't stop spinning. Love doesn't stop spinning no matter how many times a person tries to stop it. It just doesn't go away.

All of these freaking characters know that, what with their drama.

SO 5 STARS. THIS. GAVE ME EMOTIONS.
If you let yourself get spoiled you better go freaking read the whole thing anyway! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SPOILED YOURSELF!!!!!

This is the next-to-last volume of the series, and it shows. I got the feeling that the action was being drawn out a little more than it had to be so we could get two smaller volumes instead of one bigger one. Still, I can't say that it's unbelievable. I do buy Ninako's actions, given the character that she's had all along. That said, her character growth has been put on hold lately. Ren, on the other hand, has become rather more complicated than the cool pretty boy of volume one, and I appreciate that. It was nice to see him acting rashly, for once. I do still really like this series, and I'm very much looking forward to the final volume.

ANDO!!!!!

I'm ready to smack Ninako upside the head. How in the world she can still be after Ren at this point...and yet not after him. But in love with him. But denying it to everyone.

For gosh sake, Ninako, open your freaking eyes and see Ando!!!!

Okay, first I have to say I TOTALLY SHIP TODA!!

I don't care this young man barely has any page time or doesn't really know Ninako, I lovessss him! He was probably one of the biggest surprises when it came to some of the characters (the opening with Ren was SUPER shocking and takes the win for I-can't-believe-that-just-happened) and was completely unprepared for how he would steal my heart. I honestly wish we could see more of him because he is so much deeper than the loud third year in volume eight. #ShippingToda4Ever <—Me trying to embrace my past high school vibes LOL

I was swept away in how relatable Io Sakisaka makes characters! *cries* Her characters honestly jump off the page and make me feel so many things! I find it amazing because in no way am I in high school OR just graduated from high school, but her characters make me feel so much. I feel so seen as a person because it makes me realize that regardless of age, ALL people feel the same emotions. It could be about love, friendship, work, uncertainty, and a bunch of other things, but no matter what it is, we all struggle with similar things. It's comforting and encouraging to see it on these pages and as a result, relate so much to Ninako.

I was pretty shocked by how this volume ended. I honestly didn't expect for certain things to happen as they did and it had my eyes glued to the page!

I FEEL confident everything will be okay in the next volume, but still lots of nervous laughter. LOL! So let's see what happens in the final volume...

Synopsis:

What is love, anyway? Ninako Kinoshita’s friends tell her it’s one thing, but Ninako wonders what this mysterious feeling really is. When she meets Ren Ichinose, the handsome, enigmatic guy that all the girls worship, her life takes an unexpected turn. With just a few words and a smile, he changes her world...

Ren decides to tell Ninako his feelings for her after the Sports Festival, but he’s afraid she may have already moved on! Meanwhile, Ando and his ex, Mao, keep crossing paths… How will Ando react when he hears her shocking revelation?

My Thoughts:

Okay, so I was going to try to savor this series a bit and I wasn't going to get caught up on the Viz releases so soon. I was actually planning on catching up after starting and catching up on a few other series first. It seems that I just couldn't help myself, though. Ever since finishing volume 1, I had to know what was going to happen next. I started reading them during my hair appointment and just couldn't stop. Now I'm all caught up only 1 volume to go. I can't wait for Viz to release it. I have to know what happens!

I've really come to love the characters in this series. They're all growing and learning about themselves. I find myself very invested in their emotions. Especially since every single one of them are good people. I especially love Ninako. That girl is adorable and so straightforward. There are times when she hides the way she feels about Ren from him and her friends, but she's doing it because she thinks it's the right thing to do and because she's afraid of being rejected again and losing the closeness they've developed. I've been rooting for her this whole time, though. She's so sweet. It's impossible for me to dislike her. I really love Ren, too. He really opens up around Ninako. I love the cool Ren, but the Ren that smiles and laughs open is the Ren that I love best. Ando is a sweetie, too. I feel bad for him. He never stood a chance, but Ninako was always upfront about that. She never led him on and deep in his heart, he knew. I hope he finds happiness, though. He deserves it.

Now that Ren has Ninako cornered after seeing her sleeping at his desk, what will she do? Don't run away, Ninako. You said you would cherish the voice in your heart. Tell him!

😅

This volume was:

1) Frustrating (c'mon guys, you can fess up!)

2) Cute, per usual (Io Sakisaka just knows how to make good shoujo manga.)

3) Filled with an insane amount of feels, so protect your heart, reader!

As an avid fan of Io Sakisaka's work, of course I had to pick up the latest installment of her great series, Strobe Edge.

Ren being jealous is absolutely adorable and I pity Ninako's feelings, because Ren is always so hot-and-cold with her. Make up your mind, dude. In this volume we see that he does exactly that (woo!) I like Toda's character and I hope we get to see more of him. As far as Ando goes: Just love the guy already, Ninako! Sheesh, especially this volume he shows just how determined and amiable he is.

We get some progress in this volume, but then a cliffhanger at the end [insert frowny-face.]

Story: 4/5 - Good ol' Sakisaka style story, that leaves you wanting more.
Art: 3.5/5 - Once again, in Sakisaka's signature style, very shoujo. The panels seemed a little strange this volume.
Characters: 3.5/5 - We're constantly being teased with character development, but I don't mind it much because I always like to read more of Sakisaka-sensei's work.

Thank you for reading, I hope it helps! I give my honest opinion as detailed as I wish and hope to influence your chances of purchasing the subject under review, whether it is positive or negative.

Its incredible how much this volume still means and resonates with me in such a deep level even after all these years ❤

Ren is so cute- I love how Ninako evokes feelings in him that he doesn't normally feel; he just looks so emotionally put together all the time!

Also, I really respect Toda, and I appreciate how he said that although he and Ninako's problems are different, that doesn't make either of their problems more significant than the other- both are important issues for the person feeling it.

No, you know what. This is getting really stupid and repetitive. The stakes dropped dramatically in this manga and I cannot believe Ninako hasn’t even considered Ando. Ninako is very annoying and shallow and I may be 1 volume from completing the series, but this is ridiculous, I’m not wasting my time.

It starts with Ren seeing Ninako go towards Toda at the train station, and he impulsively jumps off the train to stop her. His jealousy even surprises himself, and Ninako is tempted to think he might actually have feelings for her. He then admits to Manabu that he has fallen for her, and he will tell her after the Sports Festival is over,

The sports festival is lively, but Ninako’s class doesn’t win, and neither does their cheer team. Mao and Ando have to work together in a relay, and she confesses she is still in love with him, not Ando, but Ando won't be taken in by her.

There is a cheer after party after the festival, so Ren tells Ninako he’ll wait for her because he wants to tell her something, but by the time she gets back he has already left for work. Ninako impulsively calls him, saying she’s sorry she missed him and there is something she wants to tell him too. (so now they are both set to confess)

Meanwhile, Ando puts the pieces together, mainly because Manabu can’t keep his mouth shut, and he is desperate to do something to make Ninako love him before Ren confesses, but instead he gets beat up by some thugs trying to protect Ninako. He is so embarrassed he won’t even look at her, and asks her not to tell Ren. This hits Ando hard, and he’s on his way back to his apathetic ways.
When Ninako meets up with Ren she is so distraught over Ando, even though Ren’s confession is everything she’s dreamed of, she finds her self saying she’s sorry and turning him down. The timing makes it feel like she can’t accept, and so both her and Ren are let down.

Now Ando, Ren and Ninako are all feeling bad, and they're all avoiding each other. Things can’t continue this way, everyone is just so miserable. It ends with Ren walking in to their classroom after school and seeing Ninako in his seat. He wants to know why she was in his seat after she turned him down. She gives a flimsy excuse about her thinking it was her seat. This causes him to corner her and force her to look him in the eye and say that again. He says he won’t let her go till she answers him.

Okay I can't lie. The whole sequence of Ando getting beaten up and giving up on pursuing Ninako, only for Ren to finally meet up with Ninako and confess his feelings and her rejecting him because of seeing Ando in the state he was in and feeling guilty.... pissed me off. It really did. I feel like we've gotten to the point where it's just being dragged out so that everything will happen in the last volume, which is a bit irritating. I would have been perfectly fine having Ren and Ninako get together earlier and having some volumes to show them in an actual relationship and how they are with each other when they are actually dating.

I still love Toda. I hope things work out for him and his family. I also want him to get a win before he leaves school.n

I'm not really shocked that Mao admitted to loving Ando. I still don't really like her though, but I wish there was more screen time for her because she honestly felt underused in the plotline.

I liked the talk that Ren gave Ando. I think they both kinda put the other in a pedestal in a way, where they both feel like the other is better than them and that they need to fight to catch up.

Also, the last few pages of Ren seeing Ninako at his seat and finally confronting her point blank was good. (I also liked the scene of Ren being jealous at the train station and wanting to be the person that Ninako talks to about her problems)

Mainly, I'm just like everyone needs to stop walking on fucking eggshells with each other and just say what they are feeling and what they want. Because holy shit, them holding back and lying to protect the others (however well-intended it was) isn't working. Jeez.

¿Me gustó? SIIII es uno de mis tomos favoritos.

¿La recomiendo? Sin lugar a dudas.

Gah! Why, Ninako??? Why???

Yes, Ando got hurt. But why would you use that as an excuse to push away Ren? What in the world are you doing, girl? You've got to be true to yourself. Stop putting others above yourself. In love, you have to be a little selfish, or things will never happen. TELL REN THE TRUTH ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL!!! Stop hurting him, & hurting yourself. It's OK to love him. You deserve to be happy. You have the right. Gah! So frustrating. Yet, I think we all know how this will turn out. There's only one volume left, after all. I just absolutely love this story! The Mangaka, Io Sakisaka, is one of my most favorite. She is such a good story teller.

Ah !

The tension builds in this volume.

Mao tells Ando what she told Ninako. Oh Mao you tiny loaf, she's not the best developed character but I do like that she's not just a mean person. It suits the series better, because most of the characters are just trying their best.

Ren confesses but because of timing Ninako rejects him. RIP

Ren talks to Ando after Ando has given up. I hope they make it.

Ok we're ALMOST THERE!!!! I was so happy that the think with the girl (I'm being vague because of potential spoilers) & Ando didn't happen. I thought it was going to happen & I wasn't happy. Thank goodness we didn't go there!!! I do have something I wish had happened more in this series but I'll save it for the end of volume 10 since that's the last volume of this series

Ninako is kind of ticking me off. She finally has Ren confess to her but she turns him down because she feels bad for Ando? She’s the worst. Just like Toda said, the heart loves who the heart loves and the mind can’t convince it otherwise. I really hope she stops the stupid act. I do feel bad for Ando’s ex though.
