A new chapter in Garth Ennis’ seminal creation – Crossed. The runaway success web comic (CrossedComic.com) featuring an island of uninfected people trying to survive in a world overrun by psychopaths (think The Walking Dead meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre)!
Manipulation, deceit, and petty politics rule the plague survivors living off the Scottish coast and pretending their isolated island is safe from the Crossed. But every day brings them closer to a horrible reckoning and the truth behind Shaky’s past begins to reveal his hidden nature. Now the island dreamers have met up with a society living upon a floating city of derelict boats. But the feeling that something very bad is about to happen is palpable. And the survivors must decide if they should trust in their new allies or treat the uninfected with as much caution as the insane Crossed maniacs. This is the story of the search for meaning in in a world filled with homicidal lunatics. There is no help. There is no hope. There’s only the Crossed. Collects the third chapter of the runaway hit webcomic from www.crossedcomic.com.
Modern day apocalypse tales always state that new 'normal people' are the biggest threat, except in this case, us readers seeing the new people enter the fray, already suspect that the threat will come from our own Crossed: Wish You Were Here cast! The ongoing past and present Sister Teresa tales also continue. Another strong outing by this creative team as they continually to push this quite cleave unreliable, unlikable and snaky narrator's post apocalypse adventures on a remote Scottish island with his crew of mostly equally unreliable survivors... and of course, there's the cannibalistic rapist Crossed face zombies!b 8 out of 12.
Another great volume filled with action, extreme-horror, pathos, thrills, well fleshed characters and a storyline full of twists, but the last one seemed just too much forced for me.
This volume picked up a bit. We find out more of the characters backstory, and it's quite the tale. Also, we see that the good guys may not be as good as we thought..or are they?
The most intriguing part to me is a fleet of ships that turn up loaded with survivors who have formed a traveling survival caravan on the ocean. I was thinking it would be a great idea for the group to join up with them, but of course things don't always work out as planned.
I still say the book could be a little less wordy, but this is pretty deep characterization so the story is bound to be dense. Eagerly anticipating the conclusion.
If Crossed was sick and disturbing just for the sake of being sick and disturbing, I would have stopped reading the series. But the writing is so intriguing. You can’t predict what to expect from each volume. That’s the best part.
A lot happens here. Shaky is still hated for what he did back in volume 2. A new group of survivors stumble upon Cava. Americans. Turns out there’s a larger community floating on ships nearby. Jackson returns with a surprise. The politics get more intense. The mystery masked figure in boxing gloves gets revealed. That was a shocker. I was expecting somebody else. Towards the end, we finally understand what the Americans were after.
Most of the main plot was kind of stale and seemed to drag on in this volume. I was going to give it 3 stars, but the last 25% of this book went in to high gear and really brought the action. Can't wait to read the final volume and see how everything ends.
Welcome to the Crossed Universe where the dominant species is the RapeCannibal.
The island has some American visitors. They come in peace… to trade. Shaky joins the visitors and is introduced to the Driftfleet – 388 humans on 33 shipping vessels. The armada consists of boats in all shapes and sizes.
Shaky reports back. He thinks the fleet is all show and no go. Tabitha reports to Shaky that she’s pregnant with his child.
Captain Dora of the Driftfleet makes an offer to the islanders – Anyone with guns and ammo is welcomed aboard, provided they bring their guns and ammo with them.
The Driftfleet needed all the guns they could get and it wasn’t enough as the story continues. The fleet burns.
A few surprises and a few surprising deaths. The identity of the masked character with the boxing gloves is revealed. Shocker!
Lots of flashbacks in this one. Shaky’s history with the Nun Aoileann is further explored. I found this volume with all the flashbacks a tad confusing but repeated readings helped me make better sense of the story.
This is the most subdued and, dare I say it, character driven Crossed story yet. The mayhem, the blood, the carnage...all take a backseat to the personal relationships with the hierarchy of the island. The Driftfleet, a group of cruise ships, stumble upon the island and reach out to the denizens. Egos and insecurities end up working their way in and gum up the works.
Shaky is a scumbug, and the depths of his scuminess make him even more deplorable than the Crossed themselves. At least they are afflicted with a virus (or whatever it is that makes them go nuts) and are not directly responsible for their actions. Shaky is the worst kind of self centered sleaze there is. He would screw over anyone to get what he wants. He is so adept at doing this that even when he tries to do right he does wrong. Then again, what would you or I do if we had to live in World 2.0? It is these mental exercises that keep me coming back to this series. A world gone to Hell in a handbasket makes the problems of this here world seem trivial by comparison. Crossed: Wish You Were Here is escapist fun at it's finest.
Wow. This spin-off edition of Crossed has such quality writing and character development. I venture to say Crossed: Wish You Were Here is the best of all Crossed series. It manages to capture the brutality and horror of the other ones (the explicit gorefest is toned down a bit though) while keeping it more interesting and addictive. Shaky is an interesting and complex character and damn, those flashbacks, twists and turns are so cool.
Art gets better by volume 2 until the end. Can't recommend this enough for people who like well written dark stories.
Riveting gut wrenching sad and just as page turning as the previous 2 books. This is truly a great book along side some questionable ones of the series.
I read most of the volume back in April, for some reason forgot about it but then last night I had a random Crossed relates dream and then thought "OH shit I never finished that volume did i?" So I reread what I had read and finally finished it
A virus that spreads through bodily fluids causes people to act on their darkest thoughts, causing a lot of death, destruction, rape and a whole lot of evil. We follow "Shakespeare" as he transcribes the events around him as well as his past. What does it take to survive, and how far will you go to get what you want. This is part of a 4 volume story.
The Driftfleet is introduced in this volume. It's a fleet of Amercan ships with almost 400 crew that reaches the island. Everyone is apprehensive on both sides, but there are visitors from one group to the other, trading goods and pleasantries, sort of. Shaky finds himself agreeing with the island's leaders that there is something fishy about the smiling Americans, the chickens they have on board the fleet, the apparent security.
I've missed a lot of essential details in the spoiler, so you're better off not reading it. Suffice it to say that this volume takes the story in a very entertaining direction. There is a lot of detail put into people's reactions, emotions and feelings. You really start to feel for everyone who gets killed. This volume ends in a cliffhanger where an old character from Shaky's past returns, so I'm quickly moving onto the next book.
I think everything that makes a comic book amazing are in this series "Crossed Wish you were here". You have drama, things that you didn't expect, horror, bloody, sex, a good plot, strong characters and lots of other things. In this third book I'm impressed how Shaky has changed since the first book, and I'm very curious to know what king of things he going to do in the next books. So, I highly recommend that you read this comic book.
Possibly the least festive read imaginable - a long-form narrative set in a world overrun by a zombie-like plague, except worse, because rather than shambling the infected have all their worst (which is to say, most human) instincts set loose. And the uninfected don't behave much better, they're just sneakier about it. Ho. Ho. Ho.
As a series, "Crossed" is not for the faint of heart. Definitely cutting edge horror that doesn't mess around. Some of the series is much too gratuitous and salacious for my tastes, but I stumbled across this one and found it has a well-crafted mix of intellect, passion, suspense, plot, character, and horror.
