--

EN In the past, I criticised En quite a lot as a villain, but the truth is that his absence has had a significant impact on the story. He was that constant threat, a shadow looming over all the other characters — and with his disappearance, that tension faded. On the other hand, the character has become more compelling, as he’s no longer that seemingly invincible and untouchable figure.

The series is finally entering a really strong phase, with a lot happening and changing.

The clash between the Cross-Eyes gang and En’s henchmen is perhaps one of the best action moments in the series so far.

( I am currently re-reading the series, my review will be edited later! I enjoyed all of the volumes though! :D)

All of my Dorohedoro reviews are actually a summary of what I've read & some thoughts!
I have the memory of a goldfish.

[RE-READ] SEPTEMBER 2021
TW: Strong language, blood & gore, graphic violence, body horror , death, decapitated bodies, nudity
Rating: 5 stars

Summarising with bullet points from now onwards so I can get through my re-reads faster

Spell 68: Shock and Anarchy
- All of En's mushrooms have fallen into decay
- Everyone learns of his death
- Fujita suffers from PTSD
- We see the family/mansion turns into chaos
- The killer escaped through a ventilation duct and took En's head with him
- Shin followed the blood trail but to no avail
- It is believed that the cross-eyes did it
- A staff saw two men (Kawajiri & Aikawa) near Nikaido's room (this is the only lead they have. they plan to find them)
- Missing: Nikaido, Chota & Judas's Ear
- They assumed Nikaido was killed.
- Most of the staff left the mansion with some just staring into space
- Prof Kasukabe and Johnson tries finding the room to summon devils
- Prof Kasukabe grow more suspicious of Ai Coleman
- They stumbled upon Haru in the forest
- En's death is seen to have a profound effect in the sorcerer's realm. His loss has put the world into chaos
- Noi brought chicken nuggets to Shin's room
- She revealed that she never liked En as he had monopolised her magic since she was younger
- Although a lot of people hated En, his charisma kept people going (true. he made good use of his power and social standing )
- The two deduced that it was the cross-eyes boss doing (from six years ago)
- Noi got tired and slept in Shin's bed ( got told off but didn't care. classic Noi hahaha )
- A staff misunderstood the situation ( hahaha cute! I love Shin x Noi moments )
- Turkey arrived at the mansion

Spell 69: The Wandering Chase
- We see 'CURSE' or Risu wandering the realm. I think he is targeting Aikawa because he still believes that he killed him?
- We see Haru pranking Prof Kasukabe ( I love her so much)
- Haru is a hoot. Singing improv is a hobby of hers
- Turkey attempts to make an En doll in hopes to find the killer
- This time, the doll is made by making pizza (thank God I had pizza yesterday!!!)
- Shin and Noi remembers what happened at Hydra Forest
- Prof Kasukabe gave them a diagram of the sorcerer's body smoke veins to avoid the cross-eyes from outsmarting them by hitting their weak spots
- Ebisu's commentary is hilarious, as always! (En has a cute heinie though)
- The doll is done and Turkey mentions that the doll react to the devil tumours inside a sorcerer's head
- The team went on to follow the wandering doll
- Fujita is scared at the sight of En and fainted
- Shin and Noi got distracted by this and En's doll disappears
- The doll proceeds to leave the mansion on a magic broom
- Shin and Noi went after it
- We see the cross-eyes driving with a stolen car in hopes to find their Boss
-Nikaido is having nightmares
- We finally learn more about Nikaido's backstory and magic and the death of her best friend, Yakumo
- Apparently, Nikaido went back to the past (without knowing) when she tried out her magic for the very first time. This is when Yakumo was abandoned at the river. Only this time, the baby wasn't saved by her aunt and uncle because Nikaido had distracted them. She asks about Yakumo and even shares about her magic with the family but nobody seemed to believe her. Of course, no one knew who Yakumo is because she was never saved. We see a young Nikaido searching for her only to find a grave of an unknown baby. That's how her friend died.
- Kawajiri (now fully healed) is with Nikaido far away from En's mansion
- The two is back to normal that's to the healing smoke he bought to cure their injuries
- Since En died, it nullifies their partnership contract so Nikaido is free
- Kawajiri asks how Nikaido knew his real name. According to him, they met each other when she saved him from 'collectors' during Blue Night ( So Nikaido uses her magic again? The 'real' timeline is when she lived with Yakumo and Kawajiri when the family took her in (according to her diary entry), then the second timeline is when she went back to the past and Yakumo wasn't saved. She met Kawajiri at the house and had dinner with her aunt and uncle. Then there's the current one when she met Asu during his final year of devil training? However, in this timeline, she had been alone and homeless. I think she had tried to save Yakumo with her magic countless times but fail?
- When Kawajiri became Asu, the devil, he returned the favour and helped her move to Hole
- Kawajiri advice her to reclaim her magic (now that she's older) to take back the things she'd lost and even offered to help her train

Spell 71: Room 501
- En's head is seen being dissected at the house where Caiman had a nightmare
- There's a body on the floor
- The phone is ringing in this scenario too. The Boss picked it up
- Dokuga is on the other side of the line
- The Boss hung up the phone and didn't utter a single word
- Apparently, the house is the Boss's all along but Dokuga has never been there
- Shin and Noi arrived at the rooftop of a high-rise building with En's doll
- The cross-eyes got attacked en route but managed to kill off their bullies. They also arrived at the Boss's building
- Before the cross-eyes managed to ring the doorbell of room 501, Shin and Noi arrived in the elevator
So it begins.....

Spell 72 : Mosh Pit
- En's doll enters the room
- Meanwhile, Shin introduced himself and is ready to fight (When he changed his mask to the scary mode, IM DEAD )
- Thanks to Prof Kasukabe's diagram, Shin now knows the cross-eyes tactic and avoid getting outsmarted by them
- All of them are badly injured. Natsuki was asked to find the Boss.
- Shin enters the room and asks Noi to take care of the bodies
- Shin finds that En's head had been dissected and is hollow
- Dokuga fights Shin (but Shin is competitive and has a violent streak so of course, he was able to stand on two feet in no time)
- Tetsujo told Dokuga to use the Boss's knife
- Before he was able to use it, Shin used his magic to slice his body into pieces

Spell 73: Embossing
-The cross-eyes are defeated
- Natsuki wanders the building alone to find the Boss
- She found him on the bed. His head appears bloody
- We see En's doll trying to take something out from the Boss's head ( I think En's devil tumour was artificially placed inside the Boss? )
- En's doll was stopped by Natsuki. Turkey's magic disappears
- Natsuki used the healing magic smoke the cross-eyes stole from the Shy-Tangs on the Boss. Apparently, he did the operation all by himself.
- Meanwhile, Prof Kasukabe asked Haru to help locate Shin (it's cute that he was carried by her devil body!! Also, Johnson following them aww)
- Natsuki noticed that the Boss's cross-eyes seems to be birthmarks, not from a tattoo
- He reveals that his name is Kai (Caiman, Aikawa, Kai, Ai... me: scratches head hahaha )
- Noi bagged the cross-eyes. Shin didn't want to kill them because he wants answers
- The corridor distorts and the sensation from six years ago came back
- The Boss now has En's mushroom magic
- Shin and Noi slowly turned into mushrooms
- Before the Boss managed to use the magic on Noi, their bodies disappear
- Curse arrived and intend to hurt The Boss to get revenge
- Prof Kasukabe arrived but no signs of Shin
- Haru, read the room, please. Hahaha. Not her singing at an awkward timing. It's good that she's enjoying life as an invincible devil. I can't wait for her to be animated! I love her so much
- For some reason, Haru's singing affected not just the humans but also the Curse greatly. We see the Curse break free and Risu falling from the window. The Boss is freed.
- Haru brings a blacked-out Prof & Johnson home
- The cross-eyes managed to cure their injuries with healing magic they stole
- They reunited with the boss and Dokuga gave him his knife back
- Before the volume ended, after 1 month, it was revealed that En's family was wiped out

I love the Bonus Chapter. We get to see Caiman and Nikaido again! The Gyoza fairy also returned!!! Miss the simple life in Hole :')

More death and some major characters vanish in this volume.

Memories play a big part too esp. Nikaido's memories about her magic, but I'm wondering about Kaiman and what's his role in all of this and who he really is!

It’s so interesting seeing the extent of the fallout from last volume… and it’s so stressful being invested in characters on all sides of the conflict!

Also.. Nikaido may unfortunately (for her) be a for me character…

This volume and the last seem like they're marking a serious turning point for the series. People die, power structures collapse, we finally get a name for the leader of the Cross-Eyes, and the reason why Nikaido refuses to use her magic ever again is revealed at last (and holy crap, is it tragic). I'm still not entirely sure about the introduction of the Curse character, but we're also given a little hint of a backstory for him/it, in this volume, which finally seems to give a reason for him/it existing.

All told, however, volume 12 of Dorohedoro keeps up the high standard of quality storytelling that this series should really be known for. Q. Hayashida isn't pulling any punches in moving the plot forward, and I respect the hell out of that.

In a series that thrives on frequent deaths/serious injuries being healed, these last two volumes felt like they hit a bit harder and darker. Interested to see if any of this damage is as permanent as if feels...

I enjoyed way the volume opened with Fujita narrating the events after En’s death.
A big chunk of this volume was the fight between En’s cleaners and the cross eyes inner circle, which had some exciting moments. Not much Nikaido, and no Caiman/what’s-his-name until nearly the end - who we lean put En’s devil tumor inside his own head??
I love the character of Curse so I was excited to see him again and see how he fits in to this new chaos.

When I saw the cover of this volume, with a child on it, I worried that maybe this series was about to be ruined. Fortunately this is all part of Hayashida's method of filling in backstory for various characters, not a shift of focus. This volume still has all the gory violence and weirdness that makes this manga what it is. Take for example the creation of the 'Doll' of En, used to track down his head, from a fully outlined process of making a giant pizza, which is simultaneously strange and fits right in with the food obsession of this series.
One thing I find puzzling is the occasional 4-6 pages that are washed through with heavy shading, as if the artist just took a brush effect and applied it to the entire page. This seems to be a thing that is done in a lot of manga. In this case, I find those pages to be very difficult to follow, unless I have good lighting.

En's murder sends his gang into chaos as Shin and Noi attempt to locate his killer's whereabouts. And the Cross-Eyes continue their quest to see their boss—unaware of his role in En's death, or that their path is taking them straight into danger themselves. A bloody battle royale awaits.

In volume 12 of Dorohedoro we are introduced to a type of magic in which a certain sorcerer is able to make a doll of a sorcerer that will lead anyone back to the original person. This doll is a life size replica of the original but without much personality. He makes one of En to find the head that the cross eye took with him.

En’s death has officially nullified the contract with Nikaido, she’s ready to finally use her magic.

The leader of the cross eyes, Kai, steals En’s magic tumour right out of his head and implants it in himself in order to gain magic.

A lot happens in this volume. It is very fast paced and there is the usual level of mayhem as Shin and Noi try to track down En’s killer. There are a lot of pieces are in play and when I came to the end of this volume, I wanted to read volume 13 right away.

Volume 12 is something of a return to form for Dorohedoro. En's family deal with the fallout from his murder, which reverberates around the sorcerers' world; the Cross-Eyes search for their boss; and Kawajiri and Nikaido reflect on their shared history, which appears to be growing increasingly complicated.

This volume includes some of the strengths of the series to date, including brutal violence, humour and intrigue; but contains several of the weaker aspects readers have encountered up to this point as well, like scenes that read as non sequiturs. Although far from the best volume Hayashida has produced so far, it's enough to bring the series back on track.

ok this one and the last one rly feel like a turning point: EN actually dead!! love how they show how much of society directly depended on him, also Kai!!!! ofc love that he is a power stealer v classic, fascinated in his relationship to curse and also rly interested to see whats gonna happen w Aizawa, we finally get to see the power of the cross eye elites but noi and shin brutalized them, which rly made the official appearance of kai on to the scene so chilling, u rly feel how this changes everything

A crazy murder happens, and the entire Sorcerer world changes forever. Shin and Noi look to track down the killer by any means necessary. There is a massive fight towards the end that was pretty awesome. We got more of Nikaido's backstory about why she doesn't use magic. The leader of the Cross-Eyes' name was revealed. Young Nikaido protecting Asu was a precious moment. Listen Up Humans by Haru was a great song.

Aftermath, cleaning up loose ends while leaving some dangling and dripping gory puddles on the floor. Everything is always so grimy and horrible that it's an adorable surprise to see tiny child Nikaido having little Dragonball-esque adventures in flashback. The volume ends with a new status quo, and a lot of mystery left about our protagonists.

The best and worst thing about this series is that Hayashida does such a great job fleshing out each character on both sides of the story’s main conflict, that watching them fight each other is so painful (,,: despite the torment though, what a badass cliffhanger.
