Among the quiet villages and towns of 18th century Europe, demons known as the Ill hide within the most beautiful works of art, sparked to life by the torment of their creators. Attracted by their jewel-like allure, the unwary find themselves possessed by the Ill and driven to horrific acts of violence. Only the hunters of the Ciste Vihad can dispel the Ill.
The diabolic Lady Janjaghee has captured Rodin and now plans to ensnare March and destroy everything she loves. Jake and Belma plunge into the darkness of Lady Janjaghee’s castle to rescue March, but they may have to save her from herself—if March allows her love for Rodin to overwhelm her, the Ill inside her will devour her soul. But tapping the evil force in her heart may be the only way for March to defeat Lady Janjaghee!
Rated mature for excessive violence, occasional nudity, and blood but boy oh boy is the artwork beautiful. The last volume in a story line I felt could have easily been a long term story line if they really wanted to do so.
In this story we have more glimpses into the past and the final battle between two very scary Ills. Ultimately if you don't mind the violence and blood then this is a good book even if it seemed a little abrupt to me. At least they wrap up the story elements pretty well by the end so I have no real complaints.
My favorite part of the books is not the final fight or the creepy and beautiful scene of women being abducted in their sleep as though each was a fairy flying to their destinations but rather the stories at the end of the book as each character handles the aftermath of the final battle in their own way.
I think my feelings toward this series can be partially summed up by the fact that a character improvises a weapon by wrenching an improbably large object out of its surroundings (pretty cool!) and then has zero opportunities to wield it in battle (why?). Knocking down a few minions would have been enough!
Yes, the art is lovely, probably more so if you're way more into bleeding eyes than I am. But the characterization is uneven, and unfortunately it's ultimately at its weakest when it comes to the main character, who established a fairly strong identity in the first half of the series and then just sort of coasted on it.
There's another potential series hidden in these five volumes which we might hypothetically call Jake Story. I have a sneaking suspicion Jake Story would have been more satisfying, but it is nice to see that March Story ties up (most of) its loose ends and feels more or less complete in its ending.
Comment on the nudity: it's weird that people (usually) don't have nipples. Also, if I'm not mistaken, March is continuously unclothed until the epilogue portion of the final chapter. Feminism?
Having now finished my reread, I've got some final thoughts:
- I liked Jake as a character a lot more this time around. She reminds me a lot of Bisky from Hunter x Hunter as far as the role she plays in the story and the archetypes she falls under, but we get a fuller backstory for Jake, and she looked so cool in her Ciste Vihad garb. I would've loved to see more flashbacks maybe to some of the I'll she hunted, like a spinoff of Jake's past would be cool for like, a volume or two. We got the important stuff in this series, so it would mostly be for funsies, but still.
- I appreciated how March's curse came back up in the story though I feel like how it resolves was a little rushed.
I honestly think I could have read a couple more volumes of like, monster of the week types stuff before getting the finale, but I do really like how it ends. The art style, as if it needs to be said, is gorgeous, and I loved revisiting this after I think 12-13 years since I had first read the series. Might keep an eye out on resale prices for the books cuz it would be such a pretty series on my shelf.
Love the art style as always. And I wished the story would have more chapters because I wanted more of the March story. The last few pages of Jangjahee and March battle was clumsy.
The story could have been better. To be honest I really like the happy ending. My heart sank for Jake. She was the most entertaining character and loved her story that the author had put up.
This definitely had a satisfying ending, but I wish March (and Belma, especially after he ripped out an entire lamp post) had gotten to do a little fighting more than she did. There's something to be said for just how pretty the final battle is. The images of nude March facing down the blood-woman in her flowing gown at the fantastic castle are all frame-worthy.
The final chapter brought back cameos of pretty much every character throughout the books (except Pircollet, now that I'm doing a headcount). Seeing Yovell fall immediately for Belma's overdramatic muscle-flex was funny. I liked seeing everyone again, even if Lawrence mostly hurt my feelings. There is a staggering loss in this volume that hangs over everything like a shadow, but it was a perfect end for that character.
This is a well-deserved Happily Ever After. I wish I'd read this series earlier. 5/5
The first time I read this series, I was in middle school. And until a little bit ago, I never knew there was a fifth volume. I waited forever to get my hands on a physical copy. It never happened. So, I broke down and got a digital copy. I started at the beginning again and have now finally read it in its entirety. It was worth the wait. This was beautiful, painful, pulse-pounding, terrifying, and breathtaking. I can't believe it is over. I don't think there is anything that can touch how poignant this was. If only I could go back and read it again for the first time.
My library finally had a copy of this one and I was so excited to finally read it. Personally I was happy with the HEA ending. Yes the whole book is bloody and gory and full of tragedy....but there IS loss at the end as well. Overall a great series that I am incredibly happy to have just stumbled across.
This is one of the awesomest manga’ I’ve read, I’m hooked on the first chapter!!😻😻📖Really awesome art and pretty great story, This is perfect if you love Supernatural 👌💕💕🔪🤡😈
Not the best ending and what happened to March kind of felt like a cop-out to a real ending. Not the best book in the series, but at least there was an ending.
March Story is a beautiful, interesting story that I only wish could be longer, but ended up wrapping itself quite nicely (though there was SO much content packed in this one maybe to the point of being a bit rushed?) for only 5 volumes. The art kept on getting better every volume, (and gorier XD) and I just kept on just really loving the characters even more~ I actually ended up crying the night I finished this.
It's just sad that this story is so underrated, but I don't ever regret picking up the first volume out of sheer curiosity. A real awesome read!
This is an excellent work! The art is beautiful, the story unpredictable. It's gorey, it's dark but it has a light of hope. The entire series kept me interested and the plot twist around volume 3 made me double take! I had to re-read a bit to find the hints. Its just excellent.
Anyone into horror, mystery, romance, self-discovery, tragedy and self-acceptance, will love this.
A bitter sweet ending to a pretty awesome series. I really wish it was longer, but how often is that not the case? As far as the story in this one we get a little bit more with Jake's backstory this volume and conclude the conflict started in the last volume.
I am CRYING!!! Why cant there be more volumes?? This series was so amazing & the end was so sad & happy. I dont know what to do with myself now that ive finished this series...
