I used this book as an online course in Memrise (https://www.memrise.com/course/754466...) and I think the online version is much more useful and entertaining than just reading the book. The course on Memrise includes pronunciation, meaning in English, different kind of tests and reviews and also you can attach pictures for the words that are hard to remember for you.

It is necessary to know some vocabulary, but the challenge is how you can integrate them in a great sentence.
I assume that this book helps people who are interested in taking TOEFL test or who want to build his/her own academic vocabulary with fabulous explanations, passages, and quizzes after each unit.
This book divided by 40 section in different topics. And each section has 10 helpful words in academic live.

There are many vocabulary books out there with many not-really useful words. But this one is really a must-read with more than 350 must-have words for TOEFL :D
I read it twice. First on an online course at Memrise.com which includes pronunciations and scheduled reviews. As my second read I tried the E-book version which contains examples and TOEFL preparation tests.

كتاب جميل جدًا، مفيد أن يكون كتابًا إضافيًا لكتاب تحضير التوفل.. ففيه حصيلة لغوية جيدة من ٤٠٠ كلمة مفتاحية مع شرحها وتصاريفها المختلفة: فعلًا واسمًا وصفة إلخ.. وأحيانًا موضع استخدامها وما تلحق بها من لواحق أو متعلقات.
في كل درس من الدروس عشرة كلمات مفتاحية يجمعها موضوع واحد وهذا حجم مناسب للتعلّم وكمية يستطيع الطالب قياس تقدمه دون حمل ثقيل.
ثم تأتي ثلاث تمارين عن هذه الكلمات فتأتي باختيار المعاني المقاربة لهذه الكلمات المفتاحية أو معكوسها وفي التمرين الثالث قطعة قراءة تجمع كل هذه الكلمات في كل درس يليه سؤالين أو ثلاثة عن محتوى هذه القطعة والتي تحتاج لفهم الكلمات المذكورة آنفًا في الدرس حتى يجاب عنها.
الكتاب مفيد جدًا ليس لمن يريد حيازة شهادة التوفل وحسب، بل هو مفيد كذلك لمن يريد تحسين مستواه اللغوي لو كان متوسطًا في اللغة.
عيب الكتاب: أنه لم يذكر آلية النطق بهذه الكلمات في بالأسلوب المتبّع في المعاجم كهذا المثال:
/ˈæɡrəveɪt/ : aggravate
والنطق مهم في تحضير التوفل سواء في قسم التحدّث أو الاستماع لمعرفة هذه الكلمات واستخدامها الاستخدام الصحيح.
والعيب الثاني هو أن الكتاب ضعيف في شرح الكلمات في خانة شرح كل كلمة مفتاحية فأحيانًا يشرح الكلمة بأحد صفاتها أو عوارضها ولا يشرح كنه الكلمة حتى تُعرف في مختلف السياقات، لهذا كنت مضطرًا للرجوع للمعاجم العربية والإنجليزية أحيانًا لمعرفة الترجمة الصحيحة لبعض الكلمات.

بالمجمل، الكتاب مفيد ويرفع الكفاءة اللغوية لطلاب التوفل وغيرهم رغم عيوبه اليسيرة

I used this material a while ago and it was quite helpful. It contained the 400 essential words for this test. They were explained with examples as well. Vocabulary plays an important role for fluency in general and performance on this test as well. I think you can refer to this material, since it provided the most commonly seen vocabulary for this test, and also you can apply them in other settings. Overall, this material was a worthwhile and valuable resource.
