Catch the holiday spirit with this heartwarming collection of Christmas stories compiled by Alice Gray. Rich with breathtaking true-life artwork by Laurie Snow Hein, this is a perfect keepsake holiday gift for a friend - or for your own chest of yuletide treasures.
One of my sentimental Christmas pleasures is finding a book of Christmas poems, prayers, and stories (usually at a thrift store) and reading it in spurts over the weeks before Christmas. This year's treasure was ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS published in 2001. The stories harken to simpler times, hardships overcome, blessings recognized and shared, and more. The artwork by Laurie Snow Hein is colorful, yet gentle, making one think of glowing Christmas lights, candles, and fireplaces. The last story in this volume details the first Christmas after the loss of a very special grandma. It's been over 25 years since my mother's passing and although I've been the grandma in our extended family for twenty years myself, I still feel her absence. With the passing of her sister, my aunt Beth, and my father's sister, Aunt Rita, within weeks of each other this summer, my generation officially becomes the oldest generation in our families. That thought and remembering wonderful childhood Christmases has been in the forefront of this season. ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS helped me recognize and treasure those simpler times. Now time to pack up this book in the donation box so someone can share the joy next year.
