“QlikView for Developers Cookbook” should find its prominent place on every serious QlikView developer’s desk. This is a portable guide to many “secrets of trade” that have been mastered by a very creative QlikView practitioner, through years of developing advanced QlikView applications.
While it’s not a typical tutorial book that takes the reader from the basics to the advanced topics, the Cookbook offers hundreds of specific solutions, from curiously obscure to tremendously useful, and none are too obvious.
Stephen Redmond, a brilliant QlikView practitioner, is showing his magic tricks, one after another, and unlike any other magicians, he immediately reveals to the audience how the trick works. The book is even structured this way. In each chapter, after the problem at hand is presented, the reader will find a section “Getting Ready”, where each exercise is prepared with a simple load script and some initial configurations. Then, the next section “How to do it”, shows the trick by walking the reader through the “magical” configuration or a setup that makes the trick work. Most training manuals stop there, assuming that the rest is obvious, - which is rarely the case. Stephen is going further by adding a section “How it works”, which provides a nice explanation of the settings and the underlying logic that made the trick possible. Furthermore, when there is additional lesson to be learned, an additional section “There’s more…” includes any additional related information. I found this form of explanation extremely educational – I don’t just blindly learn HOW to do something, I’m also learning WHY should it work and WHAT ELSE do I need to know about it.
As an experienced QlikView practitioner, I didn’t expect to learn a lot of new stuff, and I was proven wrong. Many of the ideas in the Cookbook looked new and refreshing for me. I truly believe that every serious QlikView developer will find a lot of interesting insight in this book. I certainly did.

A great read! Highly recommend for qlikview specialists...
Definitely not a traditional textbook, but rather a collection of cool tips and ideas about approaching popular situations that arise with QlikView. It shares many elegant, simple, and reusable solutions to problems that might seem otherwise rather cumbersome (or even impossible). Each "recipe" in the book is written individually as a quick and simple solution with a demo, instructions, and an explanation. This makes it extremely easy to read and pleasant to go through the content in any chosen order.
It is a great tool to advance one's knowledge of qlikview and add professional touch to one's development style.
I've been a certified QlikView developer for 6 months now, but been in the BI-field for several years (MS BI-stack). One thing I noticed when starting out on QlikView was the lack of good books. Now at least, there are two. If you're new to Qlikview - you really ought to buy this book as well as QlikView 11 for Developers. They complement each other nicely. I'd say even more experienced developers will enjoy this book and pick up good hints and tricks here.
It really is a proper cookbook, with recipes that you follow - and along the way you get explanations on why this works as well as how you can implement these recipes in the real world. The author clearly knows his stuff, and the book is written in a clear and consise manner. I've really enjoyed this book, and had I'm glad I have an electronic copy - as that won't be worn out by frequent use...
This review is based on a reviewer copy of the book I was so fortunate to get my hands on.
