A forbidden age gap stand-alone from small-town romance author Brooke Montgomery about a daring horse trainer and her off-limits ex-boyfriend’s dad…
When we met at the rodeo, I only knew his first name.
Sparks ignited between us, and we spent an unforgettable night together. It's not until the morning after when I recognize his last name do I realize who he is.
So I do what any rational woman would and make the walk of shame while he sleeps. It's not like I'll ever see him again or have to explain why I left.
But I'm proven wrong when he shows up at my family's ranch as the new farrier.
We can't be more than friends—for many reasons. He's twice my age, workplace relationships are off-limits, and he moved back to rebuild a relationship with his son—the one I used to date.
Getting involved would ruin everything.
As we struggle between right and wrong, our connection deepens even though his traumatic past makes him doubt he deserves a second chance.
But it doesn't matter when everything's against us, including a rival who's out to get me and my ex who's determined to win me back.
After a riding trick goes wrong on his watch, he insists on taking care of me. Even though the odds are stacked against us, we keep the truth to ourselves.
But secrets don't stay hidden for long in a Southern small town.
Here With Me is book 1 in the Sugarland Creek series. Contains 20+ year age gap, ex-boyfriend's dad, workplace romance, opposites attract, and secret relationship vibes. Each book in this Southern, small town series is a stand-alone and ends in a happily ever after. Please read the content warning before the prologue.
Brooke has been writing romance since 2013 under the USA Today Bestselling author retired pen names: Brooke Cumberland and Kennedy Fox, and now: Brooke Montgomery and Brooke Fox. She loves writing small town romance with big families and happily ever afters! She lives in the frozen tundra of Packer Nation with her husband, teenager daughter and pack of dogs. Brooke's addicted to caffeine, cold winter nights, and afternoon naps. She found her passion for telling stories during winter break one year in grad school—and she hasn’t stopped since.
Small-town, forbidden/age-gap romance… sign me up. I was excited to get to this one and am happy I finally made time for it. I’ve read this author before (under the name Brooke Cumberland) and this was better than I remember her previous books being. I enjoyed the writing and the story, of course, the ex-boyfriend’s dad troupe is a win. Overall it was great! I’m curious to keep going in the series because I’m intrigued about Noah’s brothers and I’m sure they have books.

"Before you get upset with me for followin’ the rules, just remember all the ways I’d break them for you." My first Brooke Montgomery book. In fact, this was my first go at her writing under whichever pen name, and I’ll definitely be going back for more. It’s such a simple story, but I fell in love with the characters and Sugarland Creek.
"I shouldn’t have been staring at her, but I couldn’t help it. The moment my eyes landed on her, she consumed me." Noah and Fisher meet at a rodeo. Her friend notices him checking her out and she can’t help but look back. It seems off. He’s clearly older than her, probably a lot more experienced, so why would he go for her? And Noah isn’t even that forward, but something makes her feet move in his direction.
"I don’t even know your name." "It’s Noah. What’s yours?" "Fisher." "I like that. So now that we know each other, do ya want my number or not?" Fisher isn’t that forward either. In fact, it’s really out of character for him to be ogling a woman who is way too young for him. But he can’t stop himself. And when she comes to talk to him, he realizes he can’t walk away. Neither of them know what’s going on, but the attraction is there. And they’re hopeless against it.
"I’d like to find out if you’re a screamer or a moaner." "If you’re doin’ it right, I’m both." He goes to the bar where she’s serving drinks because she’s dared him to go. She's supposed to give him her number. But that won’t be enough. Not when he’s already feeling possessive of her over all the assholes around. When she meets him outside, it’s the one-night stand dreams are made of. Fisher does everything right—more than once—and Noah is right there with him. Until morning comes.
"My brain says we need to stay away from each other. But my heart says fuck that." Realizing Fisher is her ex’s dad is bad enough. If you add to it that he’s coming to work with her horses on her family’s ranch… Yeah, it’s a nightmare for both of them.
I loved the tension, but it was heartbreaking to see that it’s not just physical for them. There’s something else there, but they can’t follow what they want.
"Why’re ya torturin’ me with that mouth I can’t kiss?" I especially enjoyed that it wasn’t just the age difference or the fact that he’s her ex’s dad (and/or her ex acting like an asshole, by the way!) Something happened to Fisher, and his relationship with his son needs to come first now. The fact that he doesn’t think he’s worthy of being happy because of what happened in his past gives the story a different tone as well.
"I wanna make sure I’m clear about one thing. Just because we’re takin’ things slow and not tellin’ anyone, doesn’t mean you aren’t mine." Can they stay away from each other? Hell, no. I’m telling you, it’s meant to be. Even when they’re trying to stay away, it’s the details, the looks across the room, the small gestures… Fisher is pretty damn perfect and she was made for him.
And don’t even get me started on the eight-second thing because… Wow!
"She owns my heart. My soul. Every ounce of my love." I loved how Brooke didn’t go down the “daddy” road, which would have been easy. I loved Noah’s family—even her crazy brothers, and I can't wait for them to go down!—and their scrapbooking and traditions. I loved her best friend and all her sass (and I can’t wait to read her book next!). Her love of horses had me "awwing" all over the place too.
I particularly enjoyed the way the dialogue was written. It was almost like I could hear them in my head, and that added a different feel to it for me.
Cons: I wished a couple of issues had taken longer to get sorted out as it seemed a bit too easy for me. I wanted a bit more depth to their relationship, especially with his past. It never felt truly forbidden, if that's what you're looking for, even though it's sweet and spicy.
"Wakin’ up to your voice and seein’ your gorgeous face is the only way I ever wanna wake up again." They're funny in their banter and their text messages. The age gap is endearing instead of being weird, and you can't tell there's an age difference in the bedroom. Not. At. All. His protectiveness of her and her willingness to fight for him were everything.
"It’s me and you forever. Don’t forget that." "I never will." The ending was not that unexpected, and even if a bit rushed, it made sense. I can't wait to see these two in future books for a bit more of their HEA!
This book was so amazingly wonderful & I couldn’t have asked for a better ex-boyfriend’s dad book dedicated to me 😭😭😭😭 I knew Brooke would knock this one out of the park!! She really gave my favorite trope some justice. I am just so happy.
Fischer was actually perfect!!!!! Him & Noah were such a great combo!! Horse trainer x former bull rider!! And that dirty mouth on that cowboy had me absolutely weak in the knees.
This is the second in a family saga & I love how big of a family the Hollis’ are. It makes me feel right at home. Also Magnolia is my favorite freaking side character (well maybe Gramma too) but she had me rolling in laughter! There are just so many great components that add up to make the perfect book.
8 seconds is the motto here & YALL it’s so hot. Can I get a yeeeeehawwwww!?!
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Tropes: One night stand Ex-boyfriends dad Close proximity Age gap Forbidden Takes care of her when she’s hurt Small town Cowboy romance (prior bull rider)
The premise of the book was fine, but if an author is trying to capitalize on a trending theme (cowboy romance) can they pleeaassee do a little research when it is blatantly obvious they have no knowledge on the topic?? There are way too many examples to mention but it was cringe. First— I can tell you with utmost certainty that a horse trainer doesn’t train for barrels and jumping. Those are two completely separate things and very niche. Don’t even get me started on her also knowing how to trick ride. Like, what?? I could not take this book seriously. Also—just because someone rides a horse or rides bulls doesn’t make them a country bumpkin. Using -ing was apparently impossible for this author and everythin’ looks like this with a lot of ya’s and ya’ll’s. Spare me. I wanted to like this book SO much, but nope. Can’t do it. So very cliche and honestly ridiculous. Don’t even get me started on the storyline with the other trainer… if you want to read good books involving horses/training/cowboys, hit up Elsie Silver and save yourself from this train wreck. Rant over.
ex boyfriends dad?? sign me up! i love taboo/forbidden relationships but this didn’t really hit the mark 😕 i almost dnf a million times tbh i know they live in the south with obvious southern accents but i just got a headache from the amount of shortened words the story was uneventful. for being ex boyfriends dad there wasn’t much drama regarding their relationship even when jase found out. probably won’t continue the series. her brothers are all older but each seem to be a giant man child so no thx
Here with Me is the first book in Brooke Montgomery’s Sugarland Creek Ranch series and this book was so good! This is like all of my fav tropes in one: small town, age gap, forbidden, he’s her ex-boyfriend’s dad, workplace, opposites attract, secret relationship, western/ranch setting.
Noah Hollis is the only daughter of the family that owns the Sugarland Creek Ranch, and at 22 she is a successful horse trainer—and not just because of her family’s last name. While at a rodeo she spots a hot man looking her way and decides to confront him, asking if he’s interested and wants her number. Her and Fisher have an instant connection and end up hooking up. And then the next morning she finds out he’s actually her ex-boyfriend’s dad…and just took a job at her family’s ranch!
This book starts off with the obvious passion between Fisher and Noah, but I loved how it explores so much more about both of their characters. Fisher is a former bull rider who has struggled with the loss of his daughter (CW listed below) and is trying to rebuild a relationship with his son. I loved how bold, sassy, and blunt Noah is and goes after what she wants…in this case Fisher. The age gap in here: she’s 22, he’s 44. I loved this book so much and am excited for more books in this series to come!
I received an audio ARC, all thoughts in this review are my own.
Quick Opinion: I skimmed to the end and it cemented my putting this on my DNF shelf. They were talking about feelings of love @ ~50% and I didn't feel any connection between them other than lust. It was very surface level and nothing that would justify hurting the people they cared about because they just couldn't help it and were meant to be -- which with these types of taboo stories, I think is needed. By the point I started skimming, it was just sexy times and felt a little cringey tbh. I like the age gap and taboo idea of this story, but it simply didn't work for me 🤷🏻♀️
Tropes: ✨Age Gap ✨One Night Stand ✨Ex-boyfriend's Dad ✨Forbidden Romance ✨Small Town
I AM OBSESSED. Fisher and Noah are my new favorite couple. I ate up all of the sexual tension, spice, their undeniable chemistry, and banter.
Noah Hollis, she’s sassy, fun, smart, feisty, and extremely stubborn. She loves spending time training horses, building connection with her clients, and being around her crazy loving family. I love the friendship between Noah and Magnolia, my fave best friend duo — I was laughing so hard at all her random comments.
Fisher is a broody, hot, retired bull rider who recently moved back to town to work on the Hollis’ ranch to as a farrier. Seeing what Fisher went through, I just wanted to give him a huge hug. He had his own struggles that weigh heavily on him. He wanted a second chance at becoming the father that Jase deserves. Fisher’s story was so emotional and I love how encouraging Noah was and being his rock.
I’ve heard only good things about this book so far. The premise of the story seemed like something I would like, but I couldn’t get passed the excessive “southern twang” the characters were given. I’m from Tennessee - where the Sugarland Creek series is set - and this was extremely annoying.
The author continued to shorten what felt like every other word in this book. I think she was trying to hard to give these characters into what she thought was a charming southern drawl, but it definitely missed the mark in my opinion. 👎
Think I've found my next 'interconnected standalone's following siblings in a small town' obsession.
This book follows youngest sibling, Noah (and only girl in the family) hooking up with her ex-boyfriend's dad (unbeknownst to her). And surprise, surprise, he ends up working at her family business.
There wasn't anything I didn't enjoy about this one but something was missing to make this a 5 star for me.
I did think at one point, the author was going to pull the "Kill-the-son-so-the-dad-and-ex-girlfriend-can-be-together-guilt-free". And I'm glad she didn't, as it was lovely to see Jace grow as a character and accept his dad's new relationship.
Tropes: - Interconnected standalones - Small-town romance - Ex-boyfriends dad x son's ex-girlfriend - Age-gap (22 years) - One night stand - Child loss / sibling loss (TRIGGER)
It’s the same formula with age gap romance that I absolutely HATE.
The age gap only plays a big role when there’s a drastic or big decision to make.
The age didn’t matter when they fucked each other to death but suddenly the gap is important when making a big decision and the younger character don’t have any say in that? Suddenly it’s the “I don’t want to hurt you” “Hurting you is the last thing I wanted to do” bullshit when the older character didn’t even TRY to explain to the possible offended party (in this case his son), didn’t even DO SHIT and just made a decision to end their fuckathon lol 🤦🏻♀️
And the ending…would ya look at that! All it took was a CONVERSATION with his son about the events and his real feelings for it to work out. Just that one phone call to clear everything. And ya tell me this man is in his 40s with how much stupidity he had haha 🤠
This book just screams cheap in characterizations. It’s like it’s trying to tell a story through tropes which is a waste because it has such good premise and Noah as the FMC is a delight to read.
I am stunned at myself for not loving this book. It has all of my favorite tropes, and it’s authored by one-half of the author duo, Kennedy Fox. I love their small-town cowboy romances, but I couldn’t enjoy this book. I had to DNF AT 50%
The development of the plot pacing was off. There were times when the plot progressed, but the timeline didn’t make sense, nor did the characters' ages during PIVOTAL life milestones. There is so much repetition of character actions, dialogue, and side characters' stories and backgrounds. A lot of this repetition could be cut out to develop the relationship of Fisher and Noah, mainly because they were an instant-love couple. Their dynamic didn’t quite sell me. Lastly, I’m a huge Swiftie and loved all the mentions and pop culture references, but these seemed repetitive or forced.
This is a book that had absolutely no idea what it wanted to be. It's advertised as a fun smutty book about a girl hooking up with her ex-boyfriend's dad which sounded like a fun time, but a decent percentage of the book talks about the MMC's trauma surrounding the death of his daughter and his subsequent attempted suicide. But at the same time I honestly forgot that that happened since it was kinda just thrown in there. Also the sex scenes were kinda bad, it was insta-lusty, and someone gets murdered???
Brooke does it again. Yes I read these books out of order ha! I got an ARC for book 3, then started book 1 and about 50 pages in got an ARC of book 4, so put it down to read that and then came back to this. Although you can read these in any order, I would highly recommend reading them in series order to get the full effect of the family and exactly what's going on with all the characters. They're all very heavily interwoven in each others stories. I loved this one, forbidden romance, close proximity, one night stand, ex-boyfriends dad and a whole bunch of trauma. It was such a beautiful, incredible story. I will say, check your triggers before going into this. Brooke is great at popping them in the front of her books. But I adored this. I've loved Noah since I first picked up book 3 and I'm so glad I now finished her story. Just books 2 and the prequel to go which I'm hoping to get to before book 5 comes out HA!
“Be a good girl, and I’ll give you exactly what ya need.”
Without warning, I pull out and roll her over. “On your knees and stick out your a$$ for me, baby.”

I love the forbidden aspect and the sneaking around. Noah and Fisher met at the rodeo and there was an instant spark between the two. The “8 seconds” counting was so freaking hot, I was screaming and giggling. After their night together, Noah woke up to being blindsided that Fisher is her ex boyfriend’s dad. I was swooning so hard when Fisher took care of Noah when she was hurt and never left her side.
This book was amazing, I HIGHLY recommend. Brooke did an excellent job of creating an enticing blend between so many great tropes all in one book.
Tropes: ❥ Ex boyfriend’s dad ❥ Age gap (20+ years) ❥ Ranch life + bull rider ❥ Small town romance ❥ Cowboy romance ❥ Family saga series ❥ Forbidden romance ❥ Takes care of her when she gets hurt ❥ Secret relationship ❥ Forced proximity ❥ Workplace romance ❥ Boss’s daughter
4 stars✨ I’m such a sucker for ex-bf’s dad, age gaps, and COWBOYSSS🩷😩 I was into it from the start lmfao But I could do without the taylor swift references
What started out as meh, and kind of cliche “southern/cowboyisms” turned out to be actually pretty good. The narrator of the audiobook took me out of the story at times due to the over exaggeration of how country or southern people talk. At times the narrator sounded Australian trying to be southern.😆
The ex boyfriend’s dad trope always wins though and the fact that it’s forbidden- even better !!

♡
A night of drinks and you decide to take a risk, everything looks good, you have a best friend who supports you even in your stupidest movements, stable work. Going crazy is never wrong, isn’t it?
Not until going crazy makes you end up in bed with your ex-boyfriend’s dad....
Noah only knew his first name fisher, not until he opened his wallet and knew his age, his zodiac sign and.....his last name, bad idea oh! And by the way, Fisher is the new blacksmith from his family’s ranch. Could fisher and Noah live quietly with those consequences on top?
I LOVE NOAH OK but magnolia took the limelight sometimes, fisher and noah are incredible together, I hate them for being so cute. the emotional maturity of fisher and noah is so top is something that I don’t have but what is done to him, I love you noah. you are the best and definitely fisher is a forty-year-old hottie I love him so much to be almost 50
I liked it, more than I thought, it came out in suggestions on tiktok and I had hopes and expectations, I definitely feel sastifrcha with daddy fisher and mommy noah.
Another cowboy romance fave! Wow what a fun read. Noah is a spit fire and had me cackling throughout the first few pages. I love a good forbidden romance but add a cowboy and tswift and I’m a GONER. Fisher Underwood our Daddy and ex-bull rider gone farrier in this book was chefs kiss. The romance between them was addictive and I devoured this book in hours because of it. Not only did I fall in love with our main love birds but the family and her bff Magnolia stole my heart as well. Stoked for the next one to come out!
This was SUCH a good ex's dad romance! I wasn't super sold on the beginning with the heroine and hero meeting and hooking up, but once they realized who each other was and had to work on her parent's ranch together, I couldn't get enough of them. I also loved how the hero truly wanted to repair his relationship with his son, who wasn't a villainous character, so it was realistic that he was torn up about dating his son's ex. I loved the small town/ranch setting and the angst in the forbidden nature of this romance!
