All she wanted was an apartment…

Amanda Jackson was used to toxic men. It’s all she’d ever known. And this gorgeous blonde property manager, Connor Brooks, was a walking red flag. But she needed a place to stay, and this unit sounded amazing. She’d be crazy not to look at it.

For Connor, finding a mark was easy. A simple ad in the classifieds. Once they were inside, it was too late to escape. They had no way out. One look at their frightened eyes on the monitor, that’s when the housebreaking could begin.

The second Connor closed the door, Amanda understood her situation. She was trapped and defenseless. Or was she? She has one card to play: make her captor fall for her before it was too late.

All she wanted was an apartment. What she got was The Cage.

The Cage is book 1 in a dark series by Danielle Bannister, author of Girl on Fire. Because The Cage is told in dual POVs you might be torn over if this book is a horror or a romance. Please be sure to read with care and check for tropes on the author's website.

I am not sure what I expected when I requested The Cage, but I sure as heck did not expect that!!!

(in all the best ways possible)

Combining two of my favorite things, Sex and Sin, this book is going to take the internet by storm and this girl right here, is here for it.

This is a twisted tale that combines both horror and romance elements, you will never see where this one is going but it sure is a wild ride.

The Cage is out today, and I promise you, you are your darkest dreams don't want to miss it!

Well... first, i want to say mannn leaving us with a plot twist cliffhanger?! Nooo i suppose i ll just need to get ready to read the next one 😂

Going into this I thought this was going to be mainly a Thriller but what we got was something else it was a cross between a Thriller with Dark Romance woven within each each other!

I absolutely devoured this book in a day, Now I will say there is quite a few trigger warnings with this book for depictions of human trafficking, abuse, rape, and trauma which is not for everyone, but Danielle's Bannisters writing keeps you engaged with a well thought out plot, but not only that she has done a great job with the characters, allowing us to see there development as the storyline develops.

I was definitely on the edge of my seat as I was reading this and didn't want to put it down! I only wished it was a little bit longer. I can't wait to read more by this author!

The Cage by Danielle Bannister is a dark romantic suspense that I listened to on audio narrated by Sarah Puckett, Oliver Highpoint, and Marcus Zarco.

This is the first book of Danielle's that I have read, and it won't be my last. I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I loved getting Amanda, Connor, and Malcom's points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

The book ended on a great cliffhanger that left me begging for more. I can't wait for the next book in the series to be announced.

Sarah, Oliver, and Marcus did an amazing job on the narration. They all know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for a dark romance, romantic suspense, psychological thriller, or captive romance.

So I was immediately intrigued by the cover of this book. It reminded me of the cover of Neon Gods, then I read the synopsis and knew this book would be interesting. Let me say this book did not disappoint. I will say this is a book with trigger warnings so read at your own risk. For me this was defiantly not the darkest romance reads but it was dark.

So this book is focused around Amanda and Connor. Amanda needs an apartment that is cheap and finds a listing that ends up being too good to be true and gets locked in an apartment that is in a building owned by Connor who sells women to men who want a “pet”. Connor is an older sexy man (from all descriptions in the book) yet he comes from a life where love is not something he was shown and now does not think he deserves. So when Amanda becomes “excited” over his touch and is truly desiring him he is shocked.

The book ends with a plot twist and with you wondering what the f will happen next. I want to read the next one. Fingers crossed it will be just as good.

This was my first book by this author and I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for it, I went in blind and I really enjoyed it!! This holds some trigger warnings and I suggest checking them out. This is a dark romance, however, for me, it’s not the darkest I’ve read.

This book focuses on Amanda and Connor. Amanda is in desperate need of a place to live. She hasn’t got much money so it’s slim pickings. She finds a listing that’s in her budget, unfortunately, it ends up being too good to be true and she ends up being kidnapped and locked in the apartment that’s in a building owned by a dark and dangerous man called Connor. He sells women to other men for money. These men buy these women to own them, to use them, so they can be their “pets”. It’s dark and twisted. Connor comes from trauma, pain and suffering. He’s never been shown what love is, he’s never felt what love feels like and he doesn’t think he deserves to be loved… that was until Amanda came into the picture and took everything he believed in and flipped it.

The book leaves you hanging and ends with a massive cliffhanger and plot twist. I’m not going to lie, I cursed out the author when the book ended. I need to know what happens next! I’m completely hooked at this point.

4.5 STARS!!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. Absolutely not my typical ARC read or genre

Deeply disturbing, dark, twisted, and really an honest look at Sex Trafficking, the effects of trauma and sexual abuse. Full of graphic on page scenes that while they can be skipped there are many. Along with varying forms of graphicly described abuse. This is a must given the subject matter. So....don't read it if you can't handle the truth of a situation that is happening all over the world.

I'm not sure how I feel about this first book. It's filled with triggers:
Sex Trafficking
Kidnapping
Physical Abuse
Starvation
Mental Abuse
Sexual Abuse/Rape
PTSD
Other Psychological problems (Stockholm Syndrome, Disassociative Disorder, Coping mechanisms, Trauma response and trauma bonds)

This book is very sexually graphic due to the nature of the subject which is Sex Trafficking and the "training" of the captives. This "training" is explicit in both sexual scenes (which can be skipped over) and the mental and physical abuse that takes place. It is a book that can cause strong physical reactions (retching and nausea being common). The exploration of the theme of Stockholm Syndrome is central to this book. However, I think a reader needs to understand that there is a deeper paradox of Stockholm Syndrome for women who have had a lfietime of sexual abuse. They develop coping mechanisms including being able to disassociate with the act or to use the act to achieve a level of safety in a situation that is unsafe. While some readers may have difficulty with understanding this response a survivor of SA will more easily identify with the main character as using the situation to achieve a bit of control. It is easier to mentally deal with the act if it is on your terms instead of something being taken from you when so much has already been taken. I can fully understand Amanda deciding that she will obey and follow through and even try to get on Conner's "good side" by using her lifetime "training" from her past abusers. However, the Stockholm Syndrome comes into effect when she begins to identify with the broken parts of Conner and develops feelings that she is conflicted over and that disgust her on one level and not on the other. Being a survivor and identifying with a broken person she also sees the good he could have had and a part of her wants to save him - show him what it is to actually be loved and desired for the person you are and not based on performance.

This book is complex. Explores harsh realities and hard concepts. It explores themes that are paradoxal and sometimes juxtaposed to each other. It is not a read for everyone.

And no - I don't think this is a romance in any form or fashion and any woman that thinks this situation is romantic may have some underlying issues that need addressed. Abuse, is never okay. Ever - ladies! And Sexual abuse is never romantic. Abusing someone for your own deviant desires in in no way EVER okay and should NOT be romanticized. Remember while you romantize this subject someone else is living the horror of it. And that person who actually is living that horror has a fractured soul they are desperately trying to hold together or they risk losing themselves completely. This is not joke.

So NO this is not a dark romance. IT is a psychological thriller with aspects of horror that cannot be overlooked because it deals with a VERY real subject that is happening around us today.

DO NOT fall into the trap of telling yourself this would never happen where you live - it does. On University campuses, sex traffickers are placed in churches looking for broken desperate boys/girls. This is especially in smaller towns - surprised - don't be it's easiest to hide the disgusting in the open in a small sleepy town.

The Cage by Danielle Bannister

Our story begins with a young lady, Amanda, whose apartment-hunting-desperation has gone into overdrive after finding herself homeless. She locates a place, a newer apartment building on the seedier side of town. A ‘too-good-to-be-true’ situation. She also finds herself being shown the apartment by a very handsome man, Connor, that owns the building and who escorts her to the elevator to go and view the apartment. The author then switches gears to the perspective of Connor, whom we discover is very interested in Amanda. Perversely interested. You know almost immediately that Connor is certainly the ‘bad guy’ in the story as through his initial thoughts he reveals just enough to let you know that he’s either a sex maniac or a serial killer, potentially both.

We switch back and forth between Amanda and Connor’s perspective as he anxiously shows her the apartment, and has devious thoughts about her, while she tries to determine if he’s just a good-looking landlord or an insanely sexy psychopath. While viewing the apartment Amanda is left alone while Conner ventures into the hallway, locking the door behind himself…and so it begins.

Connor is a sex-trafficker, and Amanda is his latest victim. The apartment building serves as a prison for the women where they are kept, trained, and eventually sold to the highest bidder. Through Connor we find that the women remain ‘caged’ in the apartments until they are ‘broken’ and become ‘pets’ to other wealthy businessmen.

The story provocatively continues back and forth with Amada’s thoughts about her situation and how she’s going to escape, to Connor’s perspective on the ‘business’, his efforts to dominate over the woman to the point of submission, and how his twisted mind works. The author is very talented, and the story is engrossing. The ‘pet’ business, as the reader comes to find out, is extensive and there are many others involved. And Connor’s plan is to sell Amanda to the building’s previous owner after he ‘trains’ her. The problem is, Connor quickly begins to have feelings for his latest catch.

Amanda’s plan is to act complaint, almost seductively compliant, and hope that it works so she can plan her getaway while Connor battles his own sick mind of knowing that he needs to groom Amanda for her new owner while fighting his own desire to keep her for himself. Of course, there’s a twist to this plot that I don’t want to spoil for the reader, so, enough said.

Eventually Amanda discovers that the man she’s being sold to is someone she knew from her past. And, when the time comes, he also recognizes her. As a result, Malcolm, a man with many secrets of his own, wants to help Amanda. The question is, does she truly want his help, or will it make things worse?

The Cage is a sleek, stylish book with twists, turns, and naughty bits that keeps the reader turning the pages, and desperately needing to know what happens next. It doesn’t disappoint. It also isn’t for the squeamish or faint of heart. It’s an adult read packed full of spice, suspense, and forbidden desires. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series and finding out what happens next. Highly recommended!

All she wanted was an apartment. What she got was The Cage.

I'm not sure how to feel about this one.

the author did say "you might be torn over if this book is a horror or a romance." which i feel is a very accurate description of the book. to me, it was a horror story laced with Stockholm syndrome, which I'm not even sure about because it seemed too soon to be that.

our main characters are Amanda, Connor & Malcom, we don't really get a lot of Malcom but still in there.

Amanda needs a new place to stay ASP and it has to be cheap. an abusive relationship has let her almost penniless and homeless, so she responds an ad that seems to good to be true, when she gets there is in for a surprise.

Connor is handsome, charming and has a nice smile that helps draw in his victims, once he gets them in his building there is no getting out.

for triggers lets see:
*Kidnapping
*Dub consent that borderlines in Rape
*Human trafficking & deep web talks
*Mentions of child abuse
* domestic violence mentions

*******SPOILERS FROM HERE ON***
when i went into the book, a part of me hoped Connor was a serial killer... i didn't really connect the dots as to what was happening.

he kidnaps women to sell them in the deep web
he calls them pets. so he housebreaks them, he trains them to be obedient be ready to serve their masters.
so until here this is a horror story.

when Amanda realizes her situation, she decides to do with Connor what she did with her abusive ex, she fakes it. she starts pretending to be fascinated by him and as she opens up to him, she starts enjoying his treatment, how he dominates her, and she is ready to serve him.

Connor has is on his mind to want to sell a Pet to Malcom, who sold him the apartment complex for an outrageous price, so he wants to find the perfect pet for him to get that money back and finally have dirt on him. Connor is kind of obsessed with Malcom and how he, Malcom, views him as less than him for being a that business. so, he wants to make Amanda his pet.

Connor starts to obsess with amanda and while his plan works he doesnt want to let go of amanda

Connor also had a tramautic upbringing and its supposed to makes us feel bad for him but it didnt do it for me, its sad but it doesnt justify what he does.

book ends on a cliffhanger which i did not like

⭐ - 4.5/5 - ⭐

When Amanda is down on her luck and desperate for a place to live, she finds an ad for an apartment that is too good to be true. Turns out, it is, and she finds herself in the middle of a human trafficking ring. In order to survive, she must outwit her captor and submit to him in every way.

Thank you #netgalley and #owlcitypress for the ARC of this book!

2 words come to mind when reading this book: Stockholm Syndrome. Amanda falls prey to a man named Connor, who is running an unfortunately successful human trafficking ring. During her 'stay', things go from bad to worse when she realizes Connor might have feelings for her. She uses these feelings to her advantage. However, she starts to thinks that maybe these feelings are reciprocated.

Amanda is an amazing and strong character. I hated that the author leaned so much into the sexualization of a broken mind, but overall, Amanda was incredible. She takes things in stride and is smart every step of the way.

Connor is a messed up dude. Sometimes, the author paints him in a sympathetic light, which is why it's so easy to understand why Amanda might have developed a modicum of feelings for him. But, as he states multiple times throughout the book, he is dangerous. That never changes. No matter how sexy he is.

The book had me hooked from page one. While I don't normally like books this short, it was done very well. Because of the scenes, we didn't need a huge set up for the world, and we're focused on a few important characters, which made character development easy, and the author succeeded in all the ways.

Even though everything is VERY twisted, the spice is SO spicy. Definitely felt mildly guilty for enjoying it as much as I did.

Overall, excellent book. The cliffhanger had me scrambling for the next book and anxiously awaiting the fate of all the characters.

This book had me on edge as to whether or not I wanted to keep reading, but I am glad I did. Danielle Bannister tastefully handled the topics of human trafficking, domestic abuse, rape and Stockholm Syndrome. I found myself turning each page, eager to find out what happens next.

Amanda is fresh out of a bad relationship where she was abused mentally and physically. She had a hard time growing up with a bad father before being placed in the system. When the couch she's been sleeping on is no longer available, she seeks out a rental unit she can try to afford. Amanda responds to an ad that seems too good to be true. The rental manager, Connor Brooks, is extremely attractive looking and easy to talk to. Amanda looks at the unit, knowing there is a catch to the low rent, and Connor tells her he will give her time to look over the contract and think it through. It's not until after Connor leaves that Amanda realizes there is no contract, all the furniture is bolted to the ground, and the front door is locked with a thumbprint scanner. She's been locked in a cage as a "pet" to be sold off to the highest paying buyer. Connor abuses the pets he has to break them into compliance. He lines up a buyer he has been itching to sell a pet to for years, Malcolm Luxx. This could be the break Amanda is looking for, as she recognizes Malcolm as a kid she grew up with. All the while, Amanda is realizing she's physically attracted to Connor and is having some of the best sexual experiences of her life with her captor.

The Cage does end on a cliffhanger, but I am thoroughly looking forward to the second book, the Safehouse. Like with any dark romance book, I recommend all to read trigger warnings first. I found myself liking one male character and hating the other, which is pushing my hopes for the second book's plot. I am curious to see how this will play out!

I received a free copy of this book via City Owl Press and am voluntarily leaving a review.

NOOOOOOOOOoOoOoOo!!

^^ exact impression of me when I got to the end of this book. I NEED to know what happens next.

This book was literally nothing like I expected. When I saw the cover and read the blurb I was expecting a thriller type story but what I got was so much more.

I will preface this review by saying it was much, much darker than I expected and there are triggers aplenty so please read these before my blathering review convinces you to read it. (And if you do read it, DM me, asap)

What I'd love to know is what Danielle Bannister put in the ingredients when making Connor Brooks. Was it drugs? I bet it was drugs. Because please explain to me WHY.. just WHY.. I started rooting for the human trafficker? I'm not sure if that was meant to happen or not. He became someone I had empathy for and that's certainly not what I expected when I first learned of Amanda's fate.

Amanda is a firecracker to say the least. I have watched enough episodes of Criminal Minds to know that I too, would try and make my kidnapper fall in love with me. 𝘔𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 "𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘹 𝘩𝘪𝘮". She's damaged but she's smart and determined, I am so excited to see what happens in The Safe House.

If I had any critique at all, it would be that I wish it was longer. I wanted a little bit more of an insight of Amanda getting into Connors head. At this point I'm not sure if she's conflicted or if she's dead set on her plan.

Oh and just so you know.. there's spice. Not at all what I expected but.. it's there! As I said - there are lots of triggers. I'd maybe describe this as if a dark romance made a baby with a thriller. It was epic.

Thank you so much to Danielle Bannister, netgalley & Victory Editing for the copy of this e-book!

I want to preface this review by saying that this book took me by surprise; it wasn't what I initially expected. I had anticipated a straightforward thriller in the vein of Paula Hawkins or Colleen Hoover, but what I got was something entirely different. This is undeniably an erotica tale, with content that might rival "50 Shades of Grey," if not in writing style, then certainly in its explicit nature.

Remarkably, the protagonist is genuinely likable, and Although the trauma-related aspects were occasionally overdone, they served a purpose in the narrative. Similarly, the antagonist, or perhaps the love interest, was not entirely hateable. Despite his recurring emotional hang-ups and excessive whining, which were oddly coincidental to his traumatic childhood, I couldn't bring myself to despise him entirely.

The intimate scenes were skillfully written, and while the dialogue had its moments of weakness, the descriptive writing was reminiscent of Johanna Lindsay's style. The inclusion of the "Pet" dynamic took me by surprise and clearly positioned this novel within the erotica genre rather than a straightforward horror thriller.

As a reader, I must note that the transition from human trafficking to S/M romance might be jarring for some, so it would be beneficial to add an erotica tag, especially considering the potentially triggering content.

Due to the intimate nature of this book, I won't be sharing my review on social media, but I want to express my appreciation for receiving the galley. Thank you.

This is Book 1 of The Captive Series.

Where oh where do I start?

First of all, the author offers a trigger warning list, so if you need to, check that out first before reading.

This is an incredibly dark and sinister book that, as a woman, it really really played on my mind and really got me thinking.

Amanda... oh Amanda. She is such a lovely lady and to be trapped as she was... my heart just broke for her.

Connor... is incredibly messed up, and Danielle portrays him perfectly.

What I did find incredibly interesting is the psychological element of the book, which can see Danielle has obviously done lots of research.

We see Amanda as a survivor of extreme abuse in her past. She has learned from her past mistakes and understands what is required to keep herself as safe as she can be given her extremely messed up situation.

Connor naively believes Amanda's victim history makes her more maleable to his needs... Oh, how was he wrong.

Danielle also touches on Stockholme Syndrome, and it was fascinating to see how this played out in her book.

The small cliffhanger at the end was frustrating, but I was excited that Book 2 (The Safehouse) is now available so I can jump straight into that and continue the story!

It is definitely a story I'd have struggled with waiting if Book 2 wasn't available as I'm desperate to see what happens next.

This is a dark story that straddles the line between romance and thriller (though I believe the romance element of The Cage is more Stockholme Syndrome!) and if you love gritty thrillers that leave you thinking long after you read then this is for you...

Highly recommend and for me, onto The Safehouse to find out what happens next!!

Amanda, Connor and Malcom.

I listened to the audio book. The narrators did a good job telling this authors story.

This is a new to me author and I was not expecting this story but I was intrigued and it kept me guessing. This is not a RH at least this part isn't it does end in a cliffhanger and is mostly told from Connor.

This is a dark twisted story. Connor who had it rough childhood because of a sick demented mother decided to use some of the ways he had been treated on women but a bit better and more profited way. He lures women who nobody would notice if they were missing trains them and sells them. Looking to get payback for the way he feels Malcolm mistreated him he finds Amanda and thinks she is a perfect match. Amanda who also had it rough from when she was young until now is in desperate need of a place and answers an ad. Soon she finds herself as one of Connor's pets. I found this intriguing and interesting. Amanda quickly comes up with a plan to try to save herself and the other women but Connor is not one to be easily manipulated. I was so enthralled with the story it kept me trying to figure out if what was happening part of her plan or was she falling for her capture. Then comes Malcolm the guy Connor is trying to pawn her to so he can seek his revenge and also have something on him. Turns out Malcolm isn't who he seems to everybody and there is a connection between him and Amanda. They both went to the same school. I look forward to the second part of this story to see what happens.

**The Cage* by Danielle Bannister**

Wow, where do I even start with *The Cage*? First of all, that cliffhanger—I'm absolutely dying to know what happens next! Did he find her? Did he lose her? Did she come back? I can't get it out of my head, and it’s making me restless. The suspense is killing me, and I’m already eagerly awaiting the next book to get all the answers.

Connor, the male MC, is one of the most complicated and captivating characters I've read about in a while. He’s the kind of man you know you should steer clear of, but somehow, you can’t help but be drawn to him. His flaws and brokenness make him a magnet for anyone who’s looking for intensity. Amanda, the female MC, is equally intriguing. She’s tough yet vulnerable, and the way she navigates her complex feelings toward Connor, especially given the Stockholm Syndrome element, adds so many layers to their relationship.

The blend of suspense and romance is masterfully done. It’s not just a simple love story—there’s an undercurrent of danger, emotional tension, and psychological complexity that kept me glued to the pages. The chemistry between Connor and Amanda is undeniable, and while the story is intense, it also keeps you questioning what's real, what's manipulation, and what's genuine attraction.

Overall, I’m hooked! If you’re into dark, suspenseful romances with deeply flawed characters, *The Cage* will not disappoint. But be prepared for that cliffhanger—because you’ll be left hanging, desperate for more.

Amanda should’ve known it was too good to be true. No one lends out high-end apartments for cheap prices—no matter how down-trodden the area is. But the second she takes one look at the unit and her wickedly handsome landlord, she’s trapped. Literally.

It’s not an apartment building—it’s a kennel. And Amanda is not a tenant, but a pet to be kept until she’s “adopted” by a new Master. But first her landlord, aka Connor, needs to get her housebroken first.

I don’t knowwhat to say about this one so this review is gonna sound as messy as this book. First off, I thought it was a psych thriller about kidnap & torture by how it sounded on Netgalley. But you ever go see a movie after thinking the commercials looked lit, only to realize they made the movie NOTHING like the commercials? Okay then you know how I feel.

This was more like a “dark romance” but it still didn’t work. The characters weren’t all that remarkable or believable, the chemistry was conveniently forced, the dialogue was basic and flat, there was no suspense, spice wasn’t spicing, and literally nothing happened—but somehow the plot was all over the place. The last few chapters are mostly dialogue while the rest is lots of sex scenes weirdly placed throughout. I also think it’s really disrespectful how the author writes an apology to anyone who’s suffered abuse at the beginning of the book, then proceeds to write a book that GLORIFIES IT.

Skip this. It’s not worth it

The Cage
By: Danielle Bannister
Narrated by: Sarah Puckett, Oliver Highpoint, Marcus Zarco

If you like dark romance woven in with a suspense filled story, then this is for you! This is my kind of story. Yes, it's twisted, but that is what makes it so good! Amanda is in need of an apartment. When she finds one in her price range that is absolutely beautiful, she should have known it was too good to be true. Connor, the property manager, knows how to find his marks. A little research, the right price and he draws them in. Amanda was a definite score and she will bring a pretty penny. But there is something about her that he is drawn to. When he tries to find the perfect buyer though, things take a turn he didn't see coming. This story is spicy, it's dangerous, it's dark, and the edge of my seat suspense had me unable to stop listening. I cannot wait to hear the next part of this series!

Sarah Puckett, Oliver Highpoint and Marcus Zarco tell this thriller and they are incredible. Puckett goes into the darkness as Amanda, a woman who has a history and is a survivor. Her portrayal is spot on. Highpoint uses that alpha voice he saves for characters just like Connor, the kind that will make heart flutter and scare you to death! And Zarco is the nerd, and his interpretation of Malcolm could not have been more on point. This is a fantastic listen and wonderful cast.

Danielle is a new author to me, and this book did not disappoint. Danielle keeps you on the edge of the seat, turning the pages to see what happens next. Amanda has had a really hard life, which hasn't been kind to her. She has left her abusive boyfriend and is couch surfing with her friend and looking for a job. When she finds an ad for an apartment within her budget with the money she has available, she fills out an application. When she gets there, she thinks the price must be wrong since it's a new apartment building under construction. Her landlord to be Connor, advises her that's because the construction is still going on, but it might rise at a later date. Amanda follows him to check out the apartment and is impressed with the apartment and the security. Amanda is about to find to her detriment Connor is not what he seems, and it is all a trap.
I received an arc from Booksprout for my voluntary honest review for NNBB. If you love a fast-paced read with suspense and some hotness, you will enjoy this. There may be some triggers for people in this book. Therefore heed the author's warnings. This book ends on a huge cliffhanger, and I can't wait for the next book in the series to see what happens next.

WOW, what an insane ride! Twisted, unique, and devilishly good.

Amanda needs a place to stay ASAP. She finds a listing for a nice apartment, which is surprisingly a good price. And, to top it off, Connor, the man renting out the apartment, is incredibly good looking. Amanda follows Connor up to the apartment for a showing. However, after Connor steps out for a minute, Amanda quickly learns that she is locked in the apartment. Amanda tries various tactics to leave the apartment, but realizes Connor is a sick individual. However, she realizes she has one last card to play - make Connor fall for her.

I expected a typical thriller novel. But, wow, was I blown away! The plot ins incredibly unique. I really enjoyed Danielle Bannister's writing style. She does an excellent job developing the characters, making the protagonist likeable, and even the antagonist at times. Ms. Brewster does an excellent job tackling the difficult captor-victim relationship. The dark pasts of both characters are heavily explored.

I was drawn in from page one. And this I interest kept going, without dissipating, right until the last page. This book ends with a WILD plot twist. I cannot wait for Danielle Bannister to release the sequel! I NEED to know what happens next!

Thank you City Owl Press for the ARC.

First up, please read the trigger warnings for this book because I think they are important. I'm not usually a fan, and think they can be overused these days, I've seen some that were essentially spoilers. But these are needed. Bearing that in mind, I approached this book with caution, but we pleasantly (?) surprised at how sensitively the story was handled.

Ok, so it still wasn't a nice easy read, but I loved it. Even though Connor was one of the most evil fictitious men I've ever come across, I still felt sorry for the child he had and could (almost) understand why he behaved as he did. That's not to say it was OK, or that I don't think he needs a long hard prison sentence. But we are all products of our childhoods.

I just wanted to hug Amanda too. She was also a product of her upbringing. Although her reaction was totally different to Connors. The difference between men and women maybe. This is a book that doesn't really have any good guys. Lots of victims, but most of them are only in the background.

The plot is mainly around s*xual slavery and human trafficking. But it's written in such a way that, I can't even explain it. It was totally readable and the ending has just left me wanting more.

Danielle is clearly a very skilled writer to be able to write about such an awful topic in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous, or voyeuristic. I'm looking forward to reading book 2 next week.

Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride! I totally wasn't expecting this!

The Cage is a quick and punchy read that exposes a horrific underworld of human trafficking and the relationship between captor and victim.

Amanda Jackson is one of many young women who are targeted by Connor Brooks, trapped, trained as a "pet" for their master and then sold. There is sprinkling of Stockholm Syndrome with a big dose of "50 shades" style sexual energy between Amanda and Connor, and, as they spend more and more time together, Amanda starts to break through to Connor, as she discovers similarities between both of their dark past lives and childhoods.

Connor struggles with his feelings for Amanda, conflicted with his determination to use her to get revenge on art dealer/thief Malcolm, who, by huge coincidence, remembers Amanda from his school days.

As the book races to it's conclusion and the tension goes through the roof, Danielle Bannister's big cliffhanger ending smacks you in the face and leaves you wanting more! Bring on the next instalment, The Safe House.

4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Danielle Bannister and City Owl Press for an ARC in return for an honest review.

As a fan of both thrillers and dark romance I got two for the price of one with this book.

After Amanda escaped from the foster system, she developed a penchant for toxic men and has a fairly low self esteem.
"The only thing special about me is that I was born on the clearance rack."
After couch-surfing dries up she desperately needs an apartment or she will end up on the street.

Connor is a confident, wealthy man. Unfortunately appearances deceive. He's a cruel man with mommy issues.
"Mother would have been proud - finally, her son had made something of himself."

Malcom is a wealthy but reclusive artist with criminal tendencies. He remembers Amanda from their childhood.
"Not a soul knew this, but I still carried her yearbook picture in my wallet."

Despite the multitude of triggers - or maybe because of them, the story kept me engaged. It's about survival and manipulation and has me completely hooked. The story is fairly compact and ends on an abrupt cliffhanger.

I will definitely be reading The Safe House, the conclusion to this story but personally I would have preferred one long book to two shorter ones with a cliffhanger.

This is not my usual type of thriller but I was completely enthralled by the cover as it’s so enticing. Amanda is pretty down in her luck and this is her last chance to get an apartment before she ends up on the streets. So when an amazing opportunity appears for a cheap but stylish apartment she thinks why not. It doesn’t take her long to realise that sometimes it can be too good to be true. As soon as the door to the apartment closes she’s caged and the panic sets in. Her attractive “landlord” Connor only invites particular women to stay in his apartments where he treats them as pets that have to be housebroken. Amanda’s determination to survive and help the others is all she can focus on to get her out of this hell. She’ll do whatever Connor wants to survive but could she really be falling for him in the process?

This book has some really explicit scenes and I have to say they were a bit much for me at times but the overall story is about survival and realising your worth. The subject matter is heavy but as we learn about the characters you realise it’s about them as humans and what people can be pushed to. It’s told from dual points of view which I think really adds to the storytelling.

Big thanks to NetGalley and City Owl Press for this ARC

All she wanted was an apartment. What she got was the Cage.

Amanda has a knack for falling for toxic men, then she meets Connor. He definitely fits the bill, because he kidnaps women and sells them.

All she was supposed to be was another "pet" but he can't stop breaking his own rules when it comes to her.

This is a dual POV, dark thriller and maybeeeee romance??? Amanda and Connor have got this dark attraction to each other. He's torn between getting her "adopted" or keeping her for himself.

And it ends with a damn cliffhanger! It was a quick read, the writing was good and their are spicy scenes (all things considered). The ending felt a little too convenient but I'm still interested in reading book 2 to see where this story will go.

TW: This book does contain human trafficking and kidnapping.

This book was not exactly what I was expecting – it was so much more. Imagine needing a place to stay and finding it, only for it to become your prison; your gilded cage. This is the story. Amanda needed an apartment that was affordable. When she found the listing for one that was perfect, her whole life changed. She found herself locked in by Connor. Connor is older, handsome and a human trafficker. Amanda finds herself at the mercy of Connor, who kidnaps women and sells them to men for pets. He trains them to be obedient to their masters. Amanda is a strong willed, intelligent character who, while yes, she was initially duped by Connor, she was able to turn the situation in a different direction. As a result of his circumstances. He has his reasons that he uses to justify his actions. The story is a mix of genres and emotions and is extremely well written. There is a gigantic cliffhanger at the end but as it’s the first in the series, it’s fine. I was completely absorbed in this book.

The Cage by Danielle Bannister: Amanda is trying restart her life after escaping a very abusive and life threading relationship. With under 2k to her name, no job and nowhere to turn, she makes a choice to lie on an apartment application. But when they say if it is too good then you shouldn’t do it. Amanda may have just jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire with her next choice.
Connor is a cruel and dangerous man, and he likes knowing that. His business is kidnapping and training “merchandise” to be “pets”. But he has a current mission and that is get one of his business acquaintance to “adopt” one of his “strays”.
The book contains scenes with bondage, Master/pet, Dom/sub, abuse and torture, fear and starvation, kept like dogs at a pound. This book is a dark, twisted, underbelly of the world, suspenseful, thriller. Book ends with a cliffhanger and needing to continue on to book “The SAFEHOUSE”

This book wasn't what I was expecting at all! I was drawn in straight away and was intrigued by Connor, his intentions for Amanda and what his "establishment" was all about.

I did enjoy this but I feel wrong saying that with what happens inside the rooms. Connor is the Master, to the "s3x slaves" and he has potential buyers for his women. This is a new concept to me in a book but I was wondering how he would play it off with Amanda, as you can tell she's his type. A hard one to let go of.

He's been trying to get Malcolm Luxx, a well known, rich, artist to buy his "pets" for years, he plans to sell his latest catch to him but can he ignore Amanda's charm?

When Amanda and Connor are together, it's passionate, although it shouldn't be between captor and captive. I was interested to see where it would lead, would he keep her for himself or move her on?

That ending! Oh my! Cannot wait to get stuck into book two, The Safehouse!

Well how do I begin this? I think this book is considered dark romance, psychological thriller. That is a very accurate description. Romance is not usually my thing. The cover and a friend brought my attention to this book. I read it in one sitting. I was not sure how I felt or how to feel reading this book! Your heart breaks. Your mad. Your kinda liking the bad boy of the next level worst kind! I’m reading this going dang! Do I have Stockholm syndrome? Like I should hate this guy! But I can not stop reading! Then you have hope and then that ending smacks you dead in the face!!!! I can not wait for The Safehouse!!! I have never read this author before but I definitely will now! Thank you to NetGalley and City Owl Press for allowing me access to this eARC and adding another author to my list!

I decided to give this book 5 stars because it really had me glued to my screen. I really could not wait to see what happened next.
What would Connor do? Could Amanda escape? Could Malcolm be the one to help her? All of these questions were literally screaming on freaking repeat in my head!

Just looking for a rental in an upscale apartment complex such as Connor's really should have been too good to be true. Amanda fell for it hook line and sinker, and yet the unseen depravity behind those doors and what awaits unsuspecting innocent women is utterly awful.

A monster caging women and selling them to other monsters.

I was drawn in for sure. I really appreciated the authors writing style, and any triggers must be considered before reading.

The ending gave me heart palpitations. Connor is not done yet!
I will definitely be eagerly waiting to read The Safehouse.

The Cage has me trapped. I do not know how to feel about this book - should I love it, or hate it?
One thing for sure, it was NOT what I was expecting, which was more of a psychological thriller. No, this was more dark romance.

All Amanda wanted was a safe place to live. All Connor wants is a new Pet.
Told from multiple POV, a look into adult human trafficking, and a desire to be loved and wanted. But how far is too far?

I will say that part of me loved this book, because I do enjoy dark romance.
I did not, however, like the cliffhanger at the end! 😫

Please be cautioned if planning on reading - t.w. - kidnapping, submission, borderline rape, domestic violence, human trafficking.

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
