I thought this was pretty good. Rain had a bit of a Sherlock Holmes feel to him, if you remember Holmes was supposed to be a little bit of a badass too. As a galactic Ranger he is among the best of the best in universal policing and he has a lead...if only he could remember what it was. I rather enjoyed him and his unfathomable luck. I did think the plot got a little silly at times and would have liked it more if it had shied away from the absurd, for example the poor couple who turned them selves into chintz lampshades for life. The subtler humour was excellently done though. Being as the afterwards states something along the lines of 'well that's the end of this Ceras Rain story,' I'm assuming it's the first of more than one. It felt that way. The story barely wraps up. I'm not a huge short story fan to begin with, but reading one that lacks a firm end is almost guaranteed to irk me. It was well written and well edited however.

Fans of fast-paced sci-fi thrillers, I introduce you to Ceras Rane. I think you'll get along quite nicely. Get comfortable and put your feet up. You may even want to microwave some popcorn, because The Trouble With Rane reads like an adventure film.

At times, I wanted the crazy ride to slow down and serious-up, but that's probably only because I'm a bit boring. Just expect more box office than indie house and you'll be fine. In any case, Beacham's well-written novella is sure to entertain.

I obtained a copy of The Trouble With Rane from the author. This review contains no spoilers.

The Trouble with Rane by Robert Beacham is a science fiction novelette thriller, heavy on the action and atmosphere. It tells the story of the eponymous Rane, a Ranger presented as a sort of ultimate bad-ass, as he follows the threads of a conspiratorial plot.

Beacham does a great job of presenting his setting, ranging from the gritty grime of earth to the sterile transhuman galaxy. This is a world where the technology borders on the edge of miraculous, but is prone to break-down, and little works precisely as it should.

The story is less strong when it comes to characterization and the plot, which takes jarring forays into the absurd on occasion. It doesn’t quite work as an accent to the rest of the fairly straightforward thriller it’s embedded in.

Some of the characterization also comes across as a little inconsistent at times, particularly when it comes to the protagonist’s capabilities; at times he’s almost inhumanly capable, at others nearly brought low by error.

There’s enough here to keep my interest, and I’ll probably take a look at the author’s next book, but I would only suggest the 50-page story to you if you’re a fan of cinematic sci-fi thrillers.

Disclosure: I was asked to review this book by the author.

An adventure in space and time that is fun to read!

A protector of the galaxy, Ceras Rane is a Ranger. He is not the best, nor the worst, but he can get the job done. This book has a bit of mystery, a bit of suspense, a bit of humor.

I like this story. It has many good things going for it. It has a touch of mystery, it has good guys and bad guys. It has suspense, yet it has humor. I was not happy with the way the book ends, but it does leave a wide opening for the next book in this series.

This book is fun to read. It is not a book requiring the reader study each line, nor is it difficult to understand. It is a good story, with enough twists and turns to be fun to read. It will keep you guessing, at times. The author's humor will be difficult for some to understand.

I would recommend this story to those science fiction readers that find delight in strange universes that seem familiar. If you are looking for a short book to fill a couple of hours, that will not force you into deep thought, grab this book. I am looking forward to the next book by Robert Beacham.
