"A newfound life awaited each of them—a life of love and sorrow, peace and pain, and a plethora of great expectations and surprises."

The Third Dawn by Thomas J. Nichols is a creative and thoroughly engaging fictional expansion of the life of Jesus, from cradle to cross. While the Christian Bible provides plenty of information on Jesus’ nativity, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection, imagining the day-to-day activities and relationships among the holy family and others is exciting.

Thomas J. Nichols has taken the recorded history of Jesus and created an episodic fiction with the known events from the Bible and plenty of extra scenes, thoughts, and dialogue from the author's imagination. No matter the reader’s individual beliefs or biblical knowledge, The Third Dawn is entertaining, thought provoking, and easy to follow.

Nur is a new character in this story and plays an important role in the lives of his adoptive parents, Mary and Joseph, and in the life of Jesus. Nur is an enigma and an interesting study on the human condition and spirituality. While he is a typical young boy/man, he has a touch of mystery about him, in terms of his sudden appearance and his immediate and striking connection with the infant Messiah. The story starts before the birth of Jesus and then follows Him on His fateful path toward His Passion and then on to the apostles' mission and Mary's assumption. An overall focus throughout the entire book is on the brotherly/spiritual relationship between Jesus and Nur and on Nur's unwavering duty to Mary, the Mother of God.

The pacing of The Third Dawn is quite fast because it is not weighed down with overt repetitiveness. The author uses both concise and lyrical prose to keep the story flowing and focused on specific points, rather than trying to fit in every aspect of the Gospel in great detail.

The Third Dawn is a predictable yet exciting journey that will resonate with all readers because it does not rely only on a pulpit and parable narrative but includes the author’s anecdotal layer to the well-documented chronicles. If you are looking for a dynamic fictional account of the life of Jesus, The Third Dawn by Thomas J. Nichols will not disappoint.

I received a free copy of this book from Lone Star Book Blog Tours in exchange for my honest review.

Throughout the story, Nur is influenced by his new family, and his faith and belief grow exponentially. Nur meets Mary and Joseph and is welcomed into their family as a son. The story continues and we get a new perspective of a pivotal moment in biblical history. Guided by unwavering faith, we see moments of pain, suffering, love, hardships, family, relationships, healing, and loss. The book gives a new perspective on the life of Jesus and his brother Nur. Nur serves as an essential character, helping his mother in her final days as Jesus goes out to fulfill his life purpose.

I appreciate that the author has spent time traveling to holy and biblical places. Nichols's travels add an extra genuineness to the novel and show the commitment of the retelling. The author does a wonderful job with the descriptive, diverse, and challenging text when writing this novel. The added special touches make the novel well-rounded and engaging. The beautiful moments of this historical moment are described wonderfully throughout this book. Rewriting the story of Jesus is such a daunting task in ensuring accurate description and representation. This book is great for both readers of the bible and non-readers. Readers will get a different perspective and non-readers will get an easy-to-read G-rated version of a pivotal moment for believers. I commend the author for this book and hope others will enjoy it as well.

Overall, I recommend this book to all readers.

Compelling and often emotional reading.

The Third Dawn by author Thomas J. Nichols is a new historical fiction account of the greatest story ever told. Written from multiple points of view of the participants, the author breathes life into the people, events, history, and place.

One of the main characters, Nur, enters the story as a wise beyond his years and divinely guided child who grows to manhood within the Holy Family as Jesus's adopted brother. The bits and pieces of Jesus's danger-fraught beginnings are expanded into a realistic account using contextual clues from the Bible and the author's knowledge of the region's time period, cultures, and geo-political history. I enjoyed how the author wove together incidents from Jesus's life, with Nur playing the instrument of God's divine intervention, warning of danger or plots against the infant, and as the two brothers traveled together later as young men, preparing Jesus for his coming discipleship, trials, and death. The descriptions and details from their journeys and experiences were especially vivid and made for mesmerizing and often emotional reading.

Particular attention is given to the members of the Holy Family's household and relatives. I appreciated the inclusion of the impacts on his parents, especially his mother. The story does not end with Jesus's ascension but follows Mary's life, with Nur there to support her, to her death and the Assumption.

I recommend THE THIRD DAWN TO readers of historical fiction, especially those who enjoy religious and inspirational subjects.

Have you ever wondered about the stories and details that might have been left out of the Bible? It is the Word of God, the story of His plan of redemption for man and its fulfillment in and through Jesus Christ. But it doesn’t include ALL the stories about Jesus’ life. As the Gospel of John says, there are so many things Jesus did that “if they were written in detail, I expect that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written” (John 21:25 NASB). In The Third Dawn, Thomas J. Nichols does an outstanding job filling in some of that detail we might wonder about.

The child Nur comes to Mary and Joseph, and they take him in as their own. From Jesus’ earliest days, Nur has a special affinity for Him, and he willingly fills the role of elder brother. He and Jesus play together, grow together, and travel together. Nur also has an air of the supernatural about him, and he often seems to receive guidance from God, which he shares with his family as needed. Jesus also tells Nur that it is he who will stay with Mary until the end, he who will prepare a place for her.

The Christian faith teaches that Jesus incarnate was both fully God and fully man, both human and divine. Nichols gives us a plausible portrait of what that may have looked like. Jesus is shown doing everyday things, learning carpentry from his father, enjoying a meal. He lives a normal life, but some of the things He says show that He is well aware of His divinely ordained role.

I was enthralled by the portrayal of Jesus’ and Nur’s travels, undertaken so that they could learn about many different cultures and people in different circumstances. Even as a young man, Jesus was aware of and preparing for His fulfillment of God’s plan. I found it especially interesting that as Jesus and Nur encountered people of various faiths, believers in other gods, they didn’t try to change minds or hearts. They were just themselves, and yet people still saw something different about Jesus. They were still drawn to Him, even though the time had not yet come for Him to reveal His purpose and begin His ministry.

The story follows Jesus and Nur through the Crucifixion and Jesus’ resurrection, and then follows Nur, Mary, and a host of believers through Mary’s death. Nichols vividly imagines how events could have unfolded and shares his vision in prose that is often straightforward but at other times remarkably beautiful. He deftly weaves the events of his own creation with the words and actual events laid out in Scripture. As readers, we know where the story is going, but that doesn’t take away from the joy we can find in traveling with Nichols as he takes us on the journey.

Five stars for an engaging and uplifting story, based on the truth of Scripture.

The Third Dawn is an inspirational story of Jesus the Messiah and his early life. Nichols draws upon scripture from the New Testament to bring this story to life. It was neat to dive into the world back then, to see history of another time, and to experience what Jesus as a child must have been like. I really enjoyed seeing Jesus as a boy and seeing his relationship with his mother Mary.

It was really interesting to have the character Nur introduced to the family. They take him in as his own. To see their bond, their brotherhood, and Nur take on the role of big brother to Jesus, his faith in him, and his devotion was very beautiful. What would it have been like to be Jesus’ brother? Nur is a great character to fill in that question and we really see the strength in their family and the love they share for each other.

It was fascinating to read about their travels as they grew older. To see the world through their eyes and experience how life was back then. I’m not a very religious person but I enjoyed the aspect of their brotherly relationship and the history of what life was like back then.

The story is told through Jesus’ entire life, including the crucifixion and resurection and what occurs after. We hear this story told by Nur, Jesus, and Mary. I loved the different POV’s. Nichols is by far a creative story teller and each character had a strong presence in sharing their stories. Nichols writing is told with depth, with faith, and with vivid imagery that pulls the reader in from the very beginning.

Nichols has created something truly precious for history and religious fans alike. This is a beautiful, biblical story of Jesus, taken from Scripture but woven into a story unlike anything I have ever read before. I appreciate the story for what it is and I think others would really enjoy it!

This story is one that enveloped me in complete amazement. Author Thomas J. Nichols takes readers on a fictional tale regarding the story of Jesus. Incorporating a mix of historical facts and creative fiction, Nichols lays out this story about Jesus from his birth to his death.

But this story is much more.

This book surrounds Nur. Nur becomes Jesus’ older brother and is the central character in The Third Dawn: From Bethlehem to Golgotha. He is guided by divine intervention to find Joseph and Mary before the birth of Jesus. The Third Dawn follows Nur until the very end with Mary.

A quick read, this book gives readers interested in Jesus’ history and story a possible new perspective of his life from how he set out to travel to learn about the people he was saving and how his brother, Nur, paved the path for Mary to live out her final years.

I did learn a couple of things from Thomas’ book. Thanks, Thomas for introducing me to the term, vigneron, a person who cultivates grapes for winemaking and that eucalyptus trees actually do grow in the region where Jesus lived and walked. The other interesting aspect of reading this book was realizing that fish, lots of fish was a main staple of nearly everyone’s diet back then Loved the incorporation of the small dog in this book. The only major flaw I saw in this story is the non-mentioning of the spearing of Jesus during his crucifixion.

If you are looking for an inspirational story related to Jesus’ family during the time he was alive, then seriously check out this little gem The Third Dawn: From Bethlehem to Golgotha.

Thank you to author Thomas Nichols for a review copy.

The Short Story: Beautifully told story of the life of Jesus.

As we rush pell mell toward the Christmas season, it's good to take time to reflect on the reason Christians celebrate December 25th. A great way to do this would be a read of The Third Dawn. This is a beautiful accounting of the life of Jesus. Author Nichols pulls the basic story of Jesus from the biblical accounts but fleshes out the narrative in this fictional account. The family of Mary and Joseph come to life. A new addition to the well-known story is the boy, Nur. Nur, an orphan, is adopted by Joseph and Mary just prior to the birth of their son. Nur is special, God speaks to him, gives his directions and seems to have sent him to help the family, especially Mary. The journey of Jesus and Nur to Ephesus is especially interesting as Jesus prepares to begin his ministry. He states, "No one accepts a prophet in his own land."

The story of Mary, mother of Jesus is told with reverent tenderness as she guides the new Apostles in their life after the death of her son. Her constant companion is Athena, wife of a Greek ship captain who crossed paths with Jesus on his journey.

Nichols gives his readers a taste for life in Jesus' time, the first century AD. Describing the lives, living conditions, customs and social norms, of the people who inhabited the Holy Land.

A beautiful story, well told, the faith of the author shines through his work. I recommend this book to people of faith, or readers interested in knowing more about what life might have been like in biblical times.

Mr. Nichols draws upon his lifetime of faith and knowledge of the Scripture to bring the journey of Jesus the Messiah to life. It covers many of Jesus’s travels throughout the early Mediterranean world, citing many stories from the New Testament, yet begins with Mary. Detailed descriptions of the life and times of the people allow readers to feel a part of those times. Aspects of the food, travel, homes, and family are portrayed with vivid colors, sounds, and religious beliefs of the time. Though not depicted in scripture, it is fascinating to consider Jesus with childhood friends as brothers before the Apostles. Mary’s bond with Jesus was through perfect faith and obedience rather than simply her blood relationship.

Nur is introduced early as an orphan sent to help protect the family of the Messiah. The young lad is helpful, insightful, respectful of Joseph and Mary, and a lifelong servant of Jesus. The kindness of people toward family and strangers begins early in The Third Dawn and extends to every cited event where Jesus delivered his message to the masses. Nur’s devotion is an emotional and moving experience that feels feasible within the confines of this Inspirational Religious Fiction.

The writing by Thomas Nichols is excellent. His foundational beliefs are presented in the novel as complementary to the teachings of the Bible Christians know. The story shares a different perspective that is believable and realistic, even if not captured in Scripture. Readers will enjoy the positive message and work to place it within their personal frame of reference. A well-written, moving story fans of historical fiction won’t want to miss.

What a read! Thomas J Nichols is certainly a gifted writer, breathing life into the images he creates in our minds. I have read and seen the nativity story umpteen times and yet when I read it here, it felt like the first time I had encountered it; I experienced it first hand, seeing it through the eyes of someone who was there, watching it unfold. Beautiful, touching and poignant, so many chapters moved me to tears, happy ones and desperately sad ones. Although I regretted that he did not spend more time on the later parts of Jesus' life, in many ways, I don't think I could have read it without a heartbreak that I would probably never recover from. How can I award any less than 5 stars?

The story of Jesus' life is already very well-known, but the life of Nur isn't. He's an orphan adopted by Mary and Joseph before Jesus is born. He travels with them, becoming Jesus' brother. He supports his brother, becoming a pillar in the family as their lives progress. It's an interesting read that adds a fun sibling element to recognizable bible stories, bringing a new perspective on Jesus' life & family.

The book is easy to read and good written. I expected that as a Biblical fiction the story would develop around stories which we can find in the Bible and that it would be accurate. Unfortunately many scenes which were taken from the Bible were not faithful to it. Moreover there are Catholic's doctrines mingled with the text.
