Found in the forest when she was young, Laura Thalassa was raised by fairies, kidnapped by werewolves, and given over to vampires as repayment for a hundred year debt. She’s been brought back to life twice, and, with a single kiss, she woke her true love from eternal sleep. She now lives happily ever after with her undead prince in a castle in the woods.

… or something like that anyway.

When not writing, Laura can be found scarfing down guacamole, hoarding chocolate for the apocalypse, or curled up on the couch with a good book.

This didn’t quite pack the same punch as other books I have read by this particular author.
I did like it to a point but the story did also feel slightly underdeveloped and the characters a bit flat and one-dimensional.
It's a shame as I am usually a big fan of this authors books.
I also found the heroine Gabrielle slightly irritating and very immature, She constantly jumps to conclusions with no actual proof and you’d think considering her unfair treatment from others she’d lay off all the judgmental opinions and Keep then to herself but nope.
So yeh liked not loved this as it just had too many cliches that had me rolling my eyes a bit.
I also thought there were times the flow felt slightly off with this as well.
I don’t even think that this being more YA was what bothered me either.
Rather I think it may have been that this was quite an early work from this author when she was still honing her craft somewhat I could definitely see the developing talent here but it was still quite raw in places and this reflected in the finished story.
This one was very YA and quite tame in content, it’s set in the same world as the bargainer series but separate and also at the supernatural Peel Academy where Gabrielle a Legacy is now enrolled.
After her Awakening, our girl finds herself in an unprecedented position both as the last of the sirens and now the firstborn vampire.
She also has the eye and attention of the king of the Vampires Andre he’s her new protector and mentor which is actually excellent as someone is trying very hard to kill her.
Andre is also Gabrielle’s destined soulmate.
So I did find this to be quite instalove and also a bit predictable and there’s also a bit of a potential love triangle at the centre as well.
it’s only slight though and I hope it stays that way as love-triangles in romances are a pet hate of mine I actually abhor them.
I also didn’t find the side characters that interesting either there was only Oliver that I was slightly intrigued by the others just felt flat and didn’t seem to add much.
I think I’m going to try reading the next book here but I’m also crossing my fingers that Gabrielle is going to grow up a bit and be less annoying and judgy.
Or at least stop putting herself in danger by acting without thought.
I also think she owes Andre an apology she’s behaved very unfairly toward him and she’s still acting like judge and jury, so not cool.
So yep this one was somewhat interesting time will tell if it manages to win me over.

Am I the only one who got the love at first sight feeling here? AND that there's a love triangle coming up? I liked Andre de Leon and Lucifer was...interesting. Though Gabrielle Fiori annoyed me most of the time. I'm sure I'll continue with the series, however I'm not sure if I'll like it. This book really had a potential to be good, but Gabrielle as a main character destroyed things for me and how she reacted to something and believed everything that was said to her. But like it said, I liked Andre de Leon and Lucifer, so I'll continue just for them ;)

I seriously read this in the span of 2 hours since it's really short.

if you ask me, this is the moooooooost cliche and cringiest book I've ever read.

the heroine being not into fashion, being super unique, being super duper gorgeous to the point her old school hated her for it are enough to get my eyes rolling.

the male hero, however, is the perfect definition wattpad character. he's a freaking vampire, king of vampires. he's gorgeous. he's rich. bad boy. in short, he's a douche and a cliche.

the plot was awful, to be honest. I just can't take it. the romance was forced.

Actual review:

One thing this book has made me realize is the fact that I don't mind if century year old vampires fall in love with high school girls... if they are stuck at the age of a high school teenager. But when you have a century old vampire in his mid to late twenties falling for a high school girl, I do not like that.

Usually I break my reviews up into my likes and dislikes, but there isn't much that I liked about this book so...

CHARACTERS:

a. I found the main character, Gabriella, to be extremely annoying. It was cool that she didn't give in to whatever the vampire king guy (whose name I do not remember) wanted, but it wasn't because she didn't like him, it was for the sake of annoying him. But, quite frankly, she only annoyed me and I wasn't as forgiving as the vampire guy.

It would have worked if she genuinely didn't like him and then gradually started to have feelings, but because the narration showed her attraction to him, it was just like watching school kids hit each other and call each other names only to conclude that "that means she likes you!". But because I think this would have been an excuse to insert some insta-love instead of just making it as if she gradually starts to like him.

In all, the majority of my annoyance with Gabriella was only when she was around the vampire guy. Other than that, I guess she was okay.

b. Seriously, I cannot remember any of the characters names. I only remember Gabriella because I have another tab opened and her name is used in the premise. So my review will be full of generic labels such as: vampire guy.

c. I'm not sure how much I like the supporting characters. I guess they served their purpose, but I like it when supporting characters seem to have their own shit going on and not just placed to move the MC's story arc along. The fairy was only there to give dating and fashion tips to Gabriella, the seer's only purpose was -really- the bitter end, and the mysterious shifter who only had a purpose in only 3.5 chapters was the same as the seer (but I'm sure he has a bigger part in book two). In short, I'm sure the story could have survived without them.

PLOT:

a. I feel bamboozled. From the premise, I thought this book was going to be about death, reapers, the afterlife, angels and maybe demons (and sirens and vampires and what not). I mean the premise starts off
The first time I was declared dead, I lost my past. The second time, I lost my humanity. Now I'm being hunted, and if I die again, my soul is up for forfeit
.

Is it just me, or do you not get the vibe of some afterlife type story? She dies, but then comes back as a vampire. It's not a spoiler because this is how she is for the majority of the book.

b. So she has 3 powers awaken within her: siren, vampire, soulmate. This seems to be important to who Gabriella is as a character and it's not explored to its full potential. Yes, we get a dab of it, but not enough to satisfy any curiosity. She's the LAST siren, shouldn't that mean something? Instead she spends the majority of the book training to be a good vampire. And the whole soulmate thing? She doesn't give a damn about it; she hates the idea. I don't know... I just wasn't happy with the vampire cancelling out the siren (even though she was able to use her siren abilities when convenient) because then what's the point of having a character who is the last of a supernatural kind?

c. The whole learning how to be a vampire thing bugged me. First of all, I feel as if she was being taught things out of order or importance. You'd think the first thing that she should learn is how to feed without killing someone (since that is punishable by death... I think). But no; the first thing she learns is how... I don't even remember. But it's something way out of left field. She doesn't learn useful things until bad things happen to her. Like, her life is in danger with someone trying to kill her, and vampire guy is teaching her miscellaneous vampire stuff.

OTHER

a. The parts when Gabriella was supposedly reading from textbooks were silly. The way those passages were not the way information is written in a textbook. It read like notes that the author created for the purpose of worldbuilding and then just copy-pasted it.

OVERALL...

This book was a lackluster. Gabriella's relationship with the vampire king was annoying and pointless IMO. The pace was meh. The characters are sort of forgettable. There were some plot holes and it kind of seemed as if the author was developing things as she went. The freakin ending was rushed and though it left much to be desired, I will not be reading the rest of this series. I am not that curious.

THOUGHTS:

1

This is one of those terrible books that we've all come across. And it always has these elements in it:

1. The most stupidest, insufferable main character that you could possibly imagine and that you repeatedly want to slap multiple times for their dumbass mistakes that even you can pick up from the start.

2. The worst love interest ever that's supposed to intrigue you but instead comes across as a jerk face. Even worse, this love interest is so cocky and arrogant he assumes girls want to go out with him, he uses force, and he just...appears out of the shadows which clearly labels him as a creeper and a stalker.

3. But the thing that really pisses me off is the fact that the MC thinks she's doing the right thing and acts all tough when really she's a pathetic wimp who doesn't know s***.

I cannot torture myself any longer by reading this book.

A fun and easy start to this series!

Laura Thalassa is one of my favorite authors and I’ve read most everything else by her. You can tell this is one of her early novels, as the themes are a little cliche and predictable, kind of a typical sort of YA PNR. BUT! I still enjoy her writing style and the characters she creates.

If you’ve read Laura’s Bargainer series, this series is set in the same world (the MC attends Peel Academy as well) and takes place before Callie and Des’ story. If you want more of a look at the supernatural world and the politics of it, this book has much more world building surrounding that side of the story than Rhapsodic had (which delved more into the Otherworld). I really enjoyed that aspect!

I’m looking forward to reading the next one now!

I was ready to be disappointed, but it wasn't the case. I am glad to have discovered this series, it had a great start. Also, the other books seem to be better. *fingers crossed*
*Review to come!*

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I picked this book up in a whim because I was bored with what I was reading at the moment and wanted something light, intriguing and with fantastical elements. And The Unearthly is just that. Laura Thalassa did an amazing job in creating this series. But first, I'll you give a little summary.

For all her life Gabrielle Fiori wanted to fit in. She has troublesome past of which she doesn't remember a lot. She doesn't even know who her real parents are, the only certainty is that they are dead. The only constant during the years seems to be "the man in the suit". But who is he and what kind of plans has the future for Gabrielle? She doesn't even know how her life will change forever.
Gabrielle is going to change school. She didn't feel good in her previous one, but the one she is going to attend sounds perfect for her. But what is Peel Academy in reality? Good question. And I bet you are not expecting this. Peel Academy is an elite supernatural boarding school on the British Isles. Boom, I told you. Anyway, Gabrielle discovers to be the last of the sirens, daughter of Celeste. Her only desire now is to fit in. During the ceremony during which all the future students awaken (that means they discover what kind of supernaturals they are), Gabrielle dies right after drinking the magical elixir.
When Gabrielle wakes up in the morgue twelve hours later, something wicked is awakened in her, something even the supernatural community has never seen before. Now the only person who can help her is Andre de Leon, the community’s infamous bad boy and the king of vampires.
Yet even his help can’t prevent the repeated attempts on Gabrielle’s life. Someone is after her, and they will stop at nothing to end her short existence. Only Gabrielle cannot let that happen now that her soul hangs in the balance, because she may have met the devil. And he wants her. Bad.

“Be careful of whom you trust. Sometimes knowledge from the dead has a way of cursing the living.”

I have read quite a few books of this genre and I have to say The Unearthly really surprised me. It is a mix of Harry Potter, Twilight and serial killers and in a very good way.
The world Laura Thalassa created is poignant, clever and highly addicting. And I say it because I read all 5 books in 3 days. Yes, that much addicting. I appreciated all the little details and their explanations. Sometimes an author forgets to explain why and what something is and you are left wondering and you may arrive at the right conclusion, but you may also not. The magic involved wasn't too prevalent, but exactly the right amount. I was pleased by the great variety of supernaturals. For once, there weren't just wizards, vampires or dragons. There were fairies, shapeshifters, seers, witches, werewolves and other kinds of human transformations, sirens, demons, fallen angels and more. All in one (or 5) books.
I was also pleased by the main characters' personalities. I didn't like all of them, but I enjoyed their characterization anyway. Gabrielle was a bit annoying I must say. She felt like a victim most of the time and I wanted her to a badass heroine kicking some ass. She wasn't. For the 2/3 books. Then things change and I was a happy girl. Anyway, back to book #1. Gabrielle was okay, needed a braver personalities and the power to recognize good things and bad things, which she doesn't have at all. My favorite characters were her two best friends: a gay fairy and an empathetic seer. Oliver was the funniest, crazier, foul mouthed gay teenagers I have ever read about. His personality was phenomenal and I laughed every time he was on scene. Some may found his inappropriate statements a bit too much, but I loved them, they were always spot on and fun. But I kinda love inappropriate jokes (shameless confession), so I dig that. Leanne on the other hand was the best friend anyone would want. She is funny, sympathetic, she's always there to listen, protect and guess the future for you. Not bad, right? And then there's our dear Andre de Leon, king of vampires and a celebrity among humans. He was such an interesting character. Sometimes you got the feeling he was hiding something or didn't tell the truth, but it didn't disappoint me or annoy me at all. Andre was strong just as much as his personality was. He was cruel and loving, he was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide kind of character. Arrogant jerk and lovable man. Rough exterior and soft soul. And I liked that. He was also hot and that didn't hurt either.

hot

Gabrielle’s life is in grave danger from one page to the next. Action upon action creates a nice heart racing experience while reading this book. The question throughout has you jumping from one suspect to the next. The pages almost turn on themselves. You want to read more and more and you can't stop it. Yes, sometimes you may find it stereotypical or too common, but I have to say it depends on the mood.
The end creeps up on you, leaving you a bit breathless. So many factors bring a good deal of WTH while reading and in the end, you lose it. You want more. Luckily for you there is book #2 already waiting for you.

Will Gabrielle and Andre fall for each other? Will the supernatural world accept Gabrielle? Will she manage to survive? Who is the man in the suit and what does he want from her?

Go read it now and then you'll tell me if it isn't addicting or what.

I feel like every single book by Laura Thalassa is so readable for me. It can be bad and even then, it was readable. In this one, we have the typical setting for a YA fantasy but with a tiny hint of spicy romance. That's my issue actually, I was hoping for more interaction between the two main leads. I couldn't feel their chemistry and this frustrated me in the end.

***** 5 Cranky Stars *****

First of all, I found it hard to read this book…it was HARD TO PUT DOWN! I started and finished reading it in ten hours. Would have been less if I didn’t need to eat, drink…breathe!

When I started reading it, I thought to myself: This sounds very much like Harry Potter. Orphan, check. Magical school, check. Two funny sidekicks, check. Main character clueless about own power, check. Only difference would be it’s about a teenage girl rather than a little boy.

Then as I read on, all comparisons disappeared and I was taken into a completely different world. Both magical, both captivating but oh so different.

Gabrielle is an ass-kicking, fighting machine who can hypnotize you with her glamour and convince you to let her drink you dry. And everyone wants her dead.

My only issue with it was Gabrielle’s level of maturity. Maybe I’ve never been around a lot of sixteen year old girls but she seemed far too mature in the book. Able to hold her own against a 700year old vampire and the likes. However, it didn’t deter the pleasure of reading the story.
(really want this one!)

Yes, this book is just another teenage paranormal where the main character turns out being the most powerful person on the planet…just another story with vampires, fairies, werewolves, shape-shifters, etc…just another doomed romance…BUT OMG! It is so much more than that! The author had spun a common story into something else. I enjoyed it so much I bought the next book in the series! I can’t wait to sink myself into the next one.

I doubt The Bargainer or Callie is in this book since it was released before that series. But omg is THE devil actually the love interest for this series 😱

I was looking for a seriously good YA PNR book to read when I stumbled across Unearthly on Goodreads. I won’t lie I am a bit of a cover whore, so the first thing that drew me to this book was the beautiful front cover. People who say that books shouldn’t be judged by their covers need to make good covers, 99% of the time people will pick up the book if it looks appealing and they will only read it if it has a good blurb. This book had both, along with lots of 5 star reviews.

I can tell the author tried to put a whole new spin on the boarding school theme, it’s been done a lot in Young Adult; Harry Potter, Vampire Academy, House of Night, Afterlife to name a few but if done well it can be successful. We got a generic description of the school other than it being a castle, no information about any of the staff other than two teachers is given. Timetables, classes, students, uniform, for goodness sake even where they ate their dinner would have been nice to have been mentioned. But no, the author made the mistake of spending far too much time focusing on the hero. I have no problem with that, but the lack of world building seriously irked me. If an author chooses to set her/his story in a boarding school, the conduct and day to day affairs of the place are vital for the readers to grasp a better idea of what is going on. The story immediately lost a few stars for these reasons alone.

description

Books are meant to take a reader on a journey; they should suck you in from the beginning. Granted it’s too much asking every book set at boarding school to be like Harry Potter but the aforementioned books aren’t exactly the best of literature but they are successful in building a realistic world. Although I have many problems with this book, it was a decent read. I liked the setting of the book at Isle of Man, although more description would have been better. What made me want to throw this book at the wall was how the news of the supernatural world was broken to Gabriella, I mean seriously? Her reactions were laughable.

Possibly the cheesiest moment of all would be:

“I am the king of vampires”

description

I mean seriously?

I just had to stop a moment couldn’t they be any other way for that piece of information to come out? I think the author was going for dramatic impact but it ended up sounding real silly.

I liked Gabriella’s new friends at the beginning, but they too seemed inconsistent. Oliver began to irk me, I think the author was going for the blunt gay friend but it just came off as rude I wouldn’t want to be friends with Oliver. And Leanne was likeable but did not appear much in the book; I felt her friends should have taken a stronger interest in what happens to her especially after the amount of times she was nearly killed.

description

At times I felt like screaming at the character’s, 16 is an immature age. I don’t understand why every single YA author deems it so necessary for their characters to be this age. It makes me want to scream really loud. Gabrielle’s deductive skills were awful; if Andre wanted to kill you I am pretty sure he would have already. This book was already in need of being edited better, they were many grammatical errors that I noticed. Overall, I think if I read this book a few years ago when I loved just about anything that I got my hands on (yes I am talking about twilight and yes I am ashamed) I would have liked it. But I’ve grown and I feel this book is another YA book that all slowly begin to resemble one another because they are no differences between them anymore.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. I have an especial weakness for books/series set in boarding schools/academies for the ‘talented’ eg Harry Potter, Vampire Academy and the Covenant series. And arriving at the secret location of Peel Academy felt a little like coming back to Hogwarts. Hoorah!

Surprisingly though, and I think this is a good thing, not much happens on the actual campus. There’s none of the boring routine of “I got up, went to class, it was super boring but I think the class hottie just smiled at me”. Nope, Gabrielle Fiori’s ‘typical’ day consists of avoiding assassination, pretending she isn’t hallucinating a stalker in a suit, accidentally seducing people and trying not to fall on Andre de Leon’s lips.

I’ve never read about a Siren before, so this started off on a unique footing for me. I have also never read about a Siren who died then became a ... This is what happens to Gabrielle Fiori. She is the first of her kind, and the last if she is successfully killed.

Gabrielle is the typical outcast heroine. Shunned for her heritage and beauty, but thankfully she’s not a Bella Swan. She’s snarky, confident and sociable and NOT a wallflower. So you can put away the eyeroll.

She has two pretty funny best friends, a gay Fairy (ha) and a Seer. We don’t actually find out much about the abilities or heritage of the paranormal species apart from a short history on the first Vampire but I kind of appreciate the focus on the action and plot rather than the history of every single paranormal out there. This was really distracting in the Shadow Falls series.

There is a decent romance in this. I should warn you, it is an Edward-Bella romance whereby the love interest is a gajillion years old and Gabrielle is under 18. And there IS a love at first sight moment... HOWEVER they don’t act on it. In fact their first date goes horrendously, and thus ensues a very fun, lusty, love/hate relationship. It did delve a little into the instalove category and there was a slight hint at a love triangle, but LUCKILY both of these clichéd storylines were thwarted before they really manifested.

The writing was impressive. No typos, repetitive descriptions of how hot the characters are, or unnecessary shit, the hallmarks of lots of new writers. It captured my attention and the rest is history.

My only peeve is that it was really short. I kind of expected more to happen, more action, more answers, more pages to get me to read the 2nd book. But for me, it did enough. Enough to have me tapping my fingers impatiently for book 2.

I HATE THE CONCEPT OF "THE VAMPIRE KING" AND I WOULD, IF I COULD, SET ON FIRE ANY AUTHOR WHO USED IT. I can deal with several vampire kings, but if they are not in their towers and castle and safe havens, plotting against their enemies, and, instead, have time to flirt with teenagers THEY DON'T DESERVE THE TITLE. And DEFINITELY I do not believe in a SINGLE VAMPIRE KING for the entire world. The world is too big a place. They'd never pull it off.

Ahem. Sorry about that.

This book is a horrible collection of the worst clichés running around supernatural YA these days: speshul snowflake protagonist, love triangle, blonde schoolmate bitch, sassy gay best friend, a centuries old vampire in love with a schoolgirl, you name it.

I can stomach a few of these clichés but not all at the same time. Each chapter threw a new trope at me, and after the first 10 or so, I swore that I'd drop the book if I got another one.

That's when the love triangle formed and I said goodbye.

If I have to bet, this guy will either be her soulmate and she'll ditch him for the vampire, or he'll be someone trying to kill her.

Either way, I have better things to read.

I don't give this book one star because the protagonist had some spine to her, and I didn't hate what I was reading... I was just -- tired. I have read too many books like these, and if I'm not going to pick up the series, I won't bother finish it, especially since it was a freeby.

Gabrielle is orphaned at a young age and can't remember much about her birth parents. When she gets accepted into a foreign boarding school as a "legacy", she can't help but think this will lead her to answers about who her parents were. She quickly discovers that the school is for supernaturals, and thus that she is one as well. Undergoing a process called the "Awakening" will activate her powers and determine what kind of supernatural she is. Her Awakening doesn't go as planned. She awakens 3 gifts -

Laura Thalassa is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I like how she crafts love stories between two people that should not be together. Usually one of the characters is someone we should hate, but not in this case. Andre is certainly dangerous and has a bad reputation (like a gang leader), but he is quickly shown to be just as vulnerable as Gabrielle when it comes to the feelings between them. This isn't the usual hate turned to love story that I am used to from Laura Thalassa, yet I am loving it. I can't wait to continue the series.

I just realized that I hadn't reviewed this awesome YA paranormal by Laura Thalassa. I was lucky enough to beta read it before it was published, and these are the six reasons why I read it in one sitting:

1) Andre. So.Freaking.Hot. His chemistry and passion with Gabrielle… awesome! Why am I so addicted to alpha males that rock in books?

2) Gabrielle. This is the first siren I’ve ever read about in a paranormal young adult book, and she’s just damn cool.

3) Gabrielle’s butt-kicking skills. It’s so refreshing that a book can have romance and the girl in it is still able to stand her own and fight!

4) The setting. Yes, the British Isles, and it’s so well described. I feel like I’m there in that murky old castle and that amazing vampire mansion.

5) The mystery of Gabrielle’s past and the way it resolves. Jitters and my heart beating faster and faster.

6) The ending. I’m not giving it away, but I would never have suspected that, and at the same time – it all makes so much sense!

Readers who loved books like Fallen, Hush, Hush, Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Harry Potter among others, should take a stab at this one. You will not regret it.

A really good read

◘ I really liked the characters in this book. It wasn't a struggle to read them, and they aren't painful to listen too. (Although Oliver at times was an earful)
◘ The plot is relatively good. The ideas are great.
◘ The romance was a bit too instant, but it's a good romance that I can definitely follow and love.

◘ However, some of the stuff that happened raised some questions that never got answered. I know it's book one but the book doesn't even mention some of the questions: how exactly did Gabrielle become a vampire? Prophecy, what the hell is it? What about her past, mother and father?

Those are my main points. It was a good read, but not amazing. However am looking forward to book 2 and I think it will definitely get better.

Because I'm clearly an idiot .

Because two years ago I have no idea what happened.
Why didn't I actually keep on reading the series? I can't remember.

Hence, idiot .

I mean, this book ends with a helluva cliffhanger, what's wrooooong with me?? How wasn't I curious?!?

So now, I'm happy to announce that I've finally gotten my head outta my *ss and that I'll read the entire series.
Because I worship Laura Thalassa, and what Laura Thalassa writes, I read.

And this particular one happens to be damn good. Damn good .

Laura you are my personal drug dealer, seriously. #addicted

First Read 22/11/2016
(and apparently suffered some kind of concussion and forgot about it otherwise I don't have a serious explanation)

And I'm rating it 4.5 stars . Because something about the relationship development between the characters bothered me: too fast, instant, almost rushed and some things happen with no apparent reason. But I'm sure Laura will settle it in the next books. #inLaurawetrust

The rest, flawless.
Exactly, I'm a bookwhore who doesn't care the hero is an old ass vampire and the heroine a high school student.
Shameless and all that. xx

Pretty good

The synopsis to this book is interesting but I enjoyed this read more than I thought I would. I was afraid that it'd be super YA and overly cute but I'm glad it was a fast, sexy and thrilling story.

So at the very beginning maybe for like one chapter or two I wasn't liking Gabrielle, because I was getting the vibe of an annoying little stupid girl who learns about this knew world and just wanted to fit it. But then she stood up for herself and that's amazing. I like her roommate and the gay fairy is entertaining, but truth be told I don't trust him. I thought more than once that he could be behind the attempts to kill Gabs (yeah, I'm calling her that because we are becoming besties).

I definitely enjoyed the relationship between Gabrielle and Andre, I feel that it was developing to a good pace and it brought back some memories from Rhapsodic, which makes me want to re-read it soon. Let's be honest we all LIKED Andre and the banter was so hot.

Things that don't make sense to me...

To me this book wasn't surprising but maybe that's my fault since I already knew this world from another book. So no surprises but I flew through The Unearthly and I was always interested.

If I'm totally honest this book might deserve a 4.5 rating but I might be a little harsh because I might compare it to the Bargainer, after all that's my favorite book. So maybe anything set in the same world might pale in comparation to my babe.

AHHHHHH Laura Thalassa and her bad guys sexy as hell <3
I must confess that I'm a huge fan of Laura Thalassa : her books are not without flaws but the universes are always exceptional and original and I get attached very easily to her characters with morality sometimes questionable ><
It was a while since this book was in my TBR but I had hesitated for a long time because I was often disappointed by the magic school stories (except HP of course =D) and finally ... <3

What I particularly appreciated :
- the universe with all its wealth and sirens, vampires, fairies, witches etc., the powers revealed in a strange ceremony, the organization of vampires and the Devil ... <3
- the plot with Gabrielle's past, her powers, the attempts of murder ...
- humor (I laughed so much during her first interactions with Andre xD)

What I liked leas t:
- I must admit that after the Bargainer and Montes, Andre seems bland ... Initially, I found him great but finally, I would have liked it to be more "bad" ><

In short, I'm sooo going to read quickly the second book to see how Gabrielle will manage without Andre ... Well only for a chapter I hope xD

This is the first installment out of four series by laura thalassa that I've read in something like the last two months..... I am addicted to Laura's work.. I love how they are all different yet all her female leads have a spark to them... I like that they all start off as normal humans with either a tragedy to their past or a secret to their lives that are unknown to them.

Some spoilers below ########

So gabrielle is an orphan child who lost her parents in a house fire... shes adopted by a lovely woman in america who is good to her and treats her like her own... at 16 gabrielle is ready to go off to uni... she just so happens to somehow enrol and get excepted to a unique school known as peel academy in the isle of man.. In her acceptance letter it states she has been excepted because she is the daughter of a relative that attended there before. Knowing nothing about her parents she decides to accept so she can gain knowledge about her parentage...

When arriving at the academy things very quickly become clear that this is no ordinary school but for those of supernatural powers.

Its abit like Hogwarts. Instead of a sorting hat they hold an awakening ceremony to discover what each persons abilities are so they can be put into houses if you like..

Gabrielle dies during her awakening ceremony only to spring back to life in the morgue scaring everyone to death...

Gabrielle is a force unknown she has awoken as a vampire.... the first of her kind to be born a vampire without being bitten and changed. And since the law changed thousands of years ago stating that no vampire was aloud to bite and change a human and if they did it would result in their own death as punishment gabrielle is a very powerful vamp indeed... not only that but she has also taken on other abilities... a seer from her mothers abilities but she also taken on the power of being a soulmate.... and who is her soulmate..

Gabrielle has to uncover secrets. Her father has left warnings for gabrielle from before his death..

Gabrielle has to unravel the secrets, work out who she can trust, get to know her abilities
All whilst trying to not be killed... someone is after her... it seems being the only vampire ever born is a very powerful thing indeed... so powerful that others want to eradicate her..

This book...Hmm.

Let me just say I liked it and I could definitely see Laura's potential as a writer and I can see the potential for the story. However, I enjoy Laura's NA books a lot more than YA. Just my personal taste but her NA books have more swearing, drinking, and sexy times (all things I love about her NA books lol)

In terms of character development I definitely felt the character could have been fleshed out more and the plot was a little thin in places. I want to be invested in the characters journeys but I wasn't completely. Hopefully this will change in upcoming books.

This book has this distinctly Laura Thalassa quality that I enjoy so much when it comes to her books, so this helped me finish it. Also, the way she handles this mix of paranormals from sirens to 500 year old vamps from faeries to the Devil (now isn't he fascinating) is well-done and I'm intrigued enough to continue and see what's in store for Gabrielle next.
