Rate this book
When Englischer woman with no memory of her past stumbles, beaten and bloody, onto Abram Yoder's Lancaster County farm, Abram is faced with a life changing choice: will he stay mired in the grief of his wife's passing, or will he be able, with God's help, to step into the future, save a stranger, and maybe even find love again? It's a race against time as one Amish community is challenged to help a stranger unravel her history before it repeats itself, with tragic results.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

As a lifelong Pennsylvanian, I’ve (Ruth Price) had a unique opportunity to meet Amish folks in my everyday life. It’s a delight to get to know a culture and people who may have a different way of living but share a common love of God and a common belief in the goodness of other human beings. I try to channel this higher good through my fiction, and while I can’t say I always reach that ideal, I hope my stories inspire and entertain. For those of you who are familiar with my "rating" system, you'll not need an explanation. For anyone reading one for the first time, it isn't complicated (as you'll see). According to my system it rates 4 1/4 stars.

Story/plot: 5 stars.....I found it quite interesting. Since I read almost any Amish fiction that I get my "hands" on, I've read quite a bit over the years. This is not like your usual Amish novel/novella.
Instead, what we have here is a mystery/suspense! I loved it! So unusual. I wanted to find out why this Englisher was in Amish country, without her even being aware of it, or why she was wearing torn, dirty clothes...and most of all, who she was and why she couldn't remember! Very thought provoking.

Characters: 5 stars...Well, we have the young English girl/woman - whose name we discover is Sylvia. I was intrigued with her, what background does she come from, why is she in her situation? Her kidnappers - Mike and D. Not very likeable men, but then I doubt we're supposed to like them. Abram....the Amish gentlemen who found her. I liked what little there was about him. Samuel...another Amish man/boy who is helping Sylvia. Yes, I liked them, all but the "bad guys"...lol

Editing: 3 stars..... I'm a bit sad to say that the editing on this is pretty bad. Within just the first couple of pages I'd noticed at least two or three. I stopped counting after that, but did notice more. I've rethought my scoring system on this item and it will be put into effect next review. It's a good thing, as I doubt I'd be giving this area any stars then. The book needs a better editor.

Entertainment level: 4 stars....While I enjoyed the book quite a bit, I have to take a star as my reading was interrupted by the mistakes.
It really put me off a bit in the flow of my reading. It is a good novella, but would be better without the errors.

I'm not sure that I can say I'd recommend the book - at least not if you have to pay for it. I was lucky and got all 3 books in the series for free. So....I'll read the others.

Out of Darkness, # 1 or Old Wounds, New Pathways is the first chapter of a longer story and somewhat of a tease. It sets up a story with an interesting storyline where a woman finds her way to an Amish farm with no memory, dirty and hurt.

Interesting idea, but it's only an extract and was stopped in the middle of the actions. Nothing was solved or resolved and it was ended exactly when it started to be more interesting! You should buy this book only if you are prepared to buy the next one in the series too!

This book was a little different than the other Amish books I read. Although it was a good book and I'd recommend it to others. It was a good pager turner and was hooked on it.
