Do you remember where you were the day Kobe Bryant died? Do you remember what you were doing when you heard the nightmarish news, and how disbelief turned into shock and sorrow? Do you remember how sports legends of past and present broke down in tears, and how hard it was to avoid the emotions of that tragic day? But as deep as the mass mourning felt, it was not in remembrance of Kobe’s incredible basketball skills. It was because he discovered how to become immortal on and off the court. What Kobe Left Behind reveals the late basketball legend's unique success techniques by immersing readers in his most emotional and illuminating experiences. From childhood struggles to teenage stardom and from heroic Laker victories to embarrassing off-court failures, readers uncover the little-known stories that molded Kobe into a beloved global figure. Each chapter focuses on one of the Laker icon's most potent habits and dives headfirst into the poignant episodes that helped him acquire these skills and demonstrated their tremendous worth. The engaging writing style transports the reader to the most revealing moments of Bryant’s life while tying them together with a compelling common theme. What Kobe Left Behind is built on hundreds of hours of deep research, as well as insider interviews with people who knew Bryant best. However, the real treasure is in the value that Kobe’s habits can provide to anyone seeking to become their best self and triumph over adversity. Woven throughout the book are scientific studies showing the benefits of Bryant’s practices, explanations from experts in human psychology, testimonials from other high achievers, and special advice shared by Bryant to his followers. Readers receive more than just a close-up view of Kobe’s extraordinary life; they are handed the keys to unlock their own potential from the Mamba himself. That makes this book an enthralling read for not just fans of Kobe, the Lakers, the NBA and sports in general, but for every bibliophile who wants to become a champion in their world.
I will start this by saying that I am not a huge fan of basketball and have watched a scant number of games in my life. I know very few key players and even less about the game itself, but even I can appreciate how much of a powerhouse player and positive impact Kobe has been in his lifetime.
What Kobe Left Behind is a well written, poignant look at the life and career of a basketball icon. Even not being a fan, this book had me wanting to go watch old Lakers games and truly examine the man in his prime, much as Kobe liked to examine his previous experience to learn from mistakes and better his understanding, as is extensively discussed in the second chapter.
In the introduction to this novel, I couldn't help but feel a certain way about how the tragic death affected the lives of basketball fans, even non Lakers fans. Even I was shocked to hear the news when it was finally confirmed. The man was an obvious superstar of the game and this book provides an excellent look into the young life and legendary career that will be remembered for ages.
I would recommend this book for any die-hard fan of basketball, or any sport, as Kobe's methods can be applied to any aspect of life. 10/10
Eli Ihej's "What Kobe Left Behind" is a poignant exploration of the profound impact of Kobe Bryant, both on and off the basketball court. This is a heartfelt tribute to his enduring legacy.
Among the collection of stories, the chapter on Kobe's final game stands out as a moment of triumph and celebration, as fans witness the legendary athlete scoring an incredible 60 points. Equally engaging is the exploration of Kobe's impact on society and how his death united people from various fields, demonstrated through spontaneous in-game tributes and public displays of mourning.
Throughout the book, Eli Ihej touches on themes of passion, obsession, and dedication. The chapter on Kobe's intense training regimen celebrates the basketball legend's unwavering commitment to improvement.
Through personal reflections and societal impact, the book explores Kobe's passion for basketball. From the profound grief after his tragic death to the celebration of his final game, the book beautifully captures the essence of Kobe's Mamba Mentality and the inspiration he continues to impart. It's a must-read for basketball fans and anyone seeking motivation to pursue their passions.
Tracing the Black Mamba’s journey from the time he was a child playing basketball in Italy to his post-retirement achievements (which included amongst other things, developing an Academy Award winning short film, championing women’s and youth sports, and creating an inspiring children’s book series) Eli Ihej delves deep into what it was that moulded Kobe Bryant into one of the greatest and most memorable sportsmen the world has seen.
From a technical point of view, What Kobe Left Behind is well-researched, presents balanced and insightful analyses and has a structure and narrative that flows beautifully. From an impact perspective, it is a remarkably inspiring and thought provoking read that contains universally applicable lessons for anyone who wants to be at the top of their game. Not only does it give you an insight into what made Kobe tick, it also makes you think long and hard about what it is that makes you tick!
The author splits the chapters into aspects of Kobe’s personality, weaving in facts, incidents and anecdotes from the player’s life. For example, in the first chapter, entitled Obsession, we learn how Bryant was SO in love with basketball that from the time he was little, he used every means possible to learn more about the game, and as he got older and had the opportunity to learn from senior players he would pick their brains about the things that they did well. His thirst for knowledge about the game and how to play it exceptionally well was so great that the practice routines he followed which would seem crazy to you and me just wouldn’t seem like ‘hard work’ to him at all. The takeaway - one of the first ‘rules’ of becoming exceptional at your craft is that you have to really, really love what you’re setting out to be the best at, because then the hard work you need to put in won’t feel like hard work at all.
In Baby Steps, we learn how Kobe approached big challenges - breaking them down into small achievable goals, charting backwards from what the big goal was up to where he currently stood on that ladder, and then focusing on each of the small goals, meticulously, till he achieved the next one and the next one and the next.
Another thing I liked about this book is that the author doesn’t shy away from talking about the less pleasant aspects of the star’s life, (Bryant’s arrogance for example, especially when was younger) but instead encourages discussion around topics that the world needs to have more conversations about, such as infidelity and sexual consent, or raising awareness about the prevalence of racism and bigotry in the sporting world and the impact it has on those who face it.
I am convinced that there is something meaningful and positive for anyone who reads this book to take away from it!
I recently picked up a copy of What Kobe Left Behind: The Playbook from an Extraordinary Life. I’m not ordinarily one to read books that are related to sports as I’m one of those “Go Sports” type of people, but I think it is safe to say that almost everyone has heard the name Kobe before and knows about some of the amazing things he had accomplished during his life. The day the news spread of his devastating helicopter crash, a weird silence took over. I didn’t know him or his family and yet it was eerie knowing that his life, and the life of his daughter, had been taken too soon. Even as I began reading this book, the moment the crash was talked about my eyes started tearing up. I felt like I could relate to the author at their disbelief of Kobe being gone even though we had no connection to him personally.
The book takes a deep dive into Kobe’s career in basketball from beginning to end. There were some parts that lost me a little bit as the “Go Sports” mindset of mine took over because it really does break down everything, going as far saying how many points were scored, what moves they were scored with and at what games, but if you’re a Kobe fan or into basketball you will likely find it fascinating. What I found fascinating was the mindset that Kobe had. He understood that to get good at basketball it would take more than just being on the court. He took time studying all aspects of the game from all players: foot movements, hand placements, jump heights. He spent hours watching tapes back to study everything so that he would know what everyone did wrong, what they did right, and what to do next time to help them improve.
Kobe Bryant used his failures as teaching moments to make him better, not just on the court but off it as well. Even when he was just 17, he wrote a story in his creative writing class, and he had the protagonist miss the winning shot in the basketball game and the team lost. John Osipowicz, Kobe Bryant’s English teacher, would later say “He was so much of a winner, but even at 17, he was aware you could lose.”
Kobe went on to do more than just play ball. He had his hands in so many projects it was difficult to keep up with everything. Yet everything he was involved with he put his all into and learned everything he could about it. He studied all he could from every angle. I personally think that is what made Kobe appealing to more than just sports fans. Whether it was sports, investing, charity work, or writing books, Kobe was always doing something to improve himself and trying to leave a legacy for his children and that is admirable. This book was filled with a lot of stuff that even I didn’t know about Kobe. Well worth the read.
What Kobe Left Behind by Eli Ihej is an extraordinary tribute to the life and legacy of one of basketball's greatest icons, Kobe Bryant. This captivating book takes readers on a journey through Kobe's upbringing, shedding light on the factors that shaped him into the legendary figure he became. Ihej's meticulous research and compelling storytelling paint a vivid picture of Kobe's relentless drive, unmatched work ethic, and unwavering determination.
One of the most impactful chapters in the book, "Obsession," dives deep into the core of Kobe's mindset and routine. The author masterfully dissects Kobe's dedication to his craft, revealing the extraordinary lengths he went to in order to refine his skills and maintain an edge over his competition. Through Ihej's vivid descriptions and anecdotes, readers gain a profound understanding of the mindset that drove Kobe to greatness.
Ihej's writing style is engaging and immersive, making it difficult to put the book down. His attention to detail and thorough exploration of Kobe's life make the narrative come alive, allowing readers to connect with Kobe on a personal level. The author captures the essence of Kobe's passion and intensity, and it feels as if we are experiencing the exhilaration of each game-winning shot alongside the late basketball legend.
"What Kobe Left Behind" offers much more than a recounting of Kobe Bryant's on-court achievements; it delves into the essence of what made him a leader among his peers. Ihej explores the influences that shaped Kobe's character, offering valuable insights into the man behind the legend.
In conclusion, "What Kobe Left Behind" is a remarkable book that offers a poignant and comprehensive exploration of Kobe Bryant's life and legacy. Eli Ihej's insightful writing and meticulous research make this book a must-read for basketball enthusiasts, fans of Kobe Bryant, and anyone seeking inspiration from the story of a true legend.
Although I wasn’t a Kobe Bryant fan, as I read this book, I could truly relate to what Eli felt when he heard of his untimely death. For me it will always be Michael Jackson. I felt his shock and disbelief. It couldn’t be true or someone was playing a terrible prank but that was not the case. The story made me feel like I knew Kobe just like how Eli felt but none of us never met him personally. Reading the introduction gave me this adrenaline feeling that I never expected to have and that is probably due to the passion, care and research that was put into the story especially when Eli mentioned the tickets and Kobe’s last game. Kobe went out with a bang! The author made me feel as if I was there at the game! It caught my attention and warmed my heart what the players and Mark Cuban did to pay tribute. I was truly amazed as I kept reading to find out how much Kobe meant to so many people and even athletes from other sports. I also appreciated the fact that Eli brought up the sexual assault charges and how a strong woman like Vanessa, Kobe’s wife, stood by him as admitted to adultery and denied the allegations. Fans stood by him as well.
I enjoyed how you talked about Kobe’s mind set and it is very simple. Have a goal in mind and break it down into different parts. Just concentrate on one part and only that part for a while and then move on to another when you have mastered it. Eventually one will be able to integrate everything together. This mind set can be applied not just in sports but in all facts of life. The same goes for injuries as Kobe implemented that strategy. Because of his drive, he influenced others to do the same and became an inspiration on and off the court. Kobe even knew when he was just a kid that being the best is a long journey and it was a learning curve. Enjoy and appreciate the journey, use it as motivation and to reignite any fire that was lost even if you have to slow down just to get ahead.
This book is incredible! I was drawn in right from the start, from page 1. The author has a great talent for making you feel as if you are there, in the moment, with the characters. Even in the introduction, it’s a page turner! I have to admit, I was a little skeptical about whether or not I could really get into “a basketball book.” But this book is so much more than that. Eli Ihej writes with an amazing ability to spin a tale. It feels as if you’re reading fiction, incredibly well-crafted fiction at that.
There is so much in this book that I didn’t realize had happened. So many interviews and reactions from celebrities that I’d never heard about. And Ihej brings all of that together in an unforgettable book that will make you forget you weren’t there. There is so much in this book that you’d never get without reading it. The vast amount of hours of research Ihej must have put into this project is mind-boggling! I came to this book with perhaps a second-grade understanding of who Kobe Bryant was and what he did in his life. I feel like I came out of this book with so much more awareness of his history and impact.
You can use this book to learn more about Kobe Bryant, basketball, and especially yourself. I didn’t expect for this book to change me, but it has. My vision of what I can achieve is different now. My belief in human capability (especially my own capability) is so much greater. And I have the author to thank for that. This book is a must-read, and I will end up reading it over and over in my life, I’m sure.
We start this book off with a personal account from the author about how he heard about Kobe Bryant’s death and how he made sense of it, relating to a lot of readers before he takes you on the journey of Kobe’s Legacy.
Eli Ihej beautifully told stories about Kobe’s life and career while also tying in the techniques he used every day to be successful. You learn things like his training regime, how often he reviewed game tape even as a kid, and how he handled racial taunts and tricks he used on the court. You even learned about how intense he was about his interests. It wasn't only basketball, we saw an example of investing. I went into this book knowing who Kobe was but I came out of this book having learned so much about him and admiring him.
Ihej did a fantastic job capturing all the things that made Kobe so memorable. I think that this book could change lives and inspire people to work toward their own goals more fiercely than ever. My favorite quote from the book was “The desire to know why he failed was much stronger than the shame of failure, which pushed thoughts of despair from his mind”. It is really good to keep in mind not to let failure ruin the lesson.

Solid, fan-written story about Kobe’s professional history and how the lessons he learned can be applied to YOUR life.
Full transparency, I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
For starters, the book is meticulously researched, and though it can lean a little hard into only the positive side of Kobe’s history, the author clearly comes to this narrative from a place of love and admiration and makes a compelling case for how Kobe made an impact on the NBA and on his fans.
The first chapter is mostly just about how the author connects with Kobe, and a reflection on Kobe’s untimely death. After that though, we get little vignettes about Kobe’s life in the NBA, and some exposition on the broader way he crosses beyond basketball into a whole different realm of influence.
One particular story I enjoyed featured Reggie Miller, the Indiana Pacer’s clutch three-point shooting all-star, and how both he and Kobe reflected on MJ and how he influenced their lives. Kobe was relentless in his competitive drive and desire to learn from everyone, at all times. He picked up a move from Reggie at this casual YMCA meet up, and ended up using it while beating him in the NBA finals years later. Kobe joked, “Guess you shouldn’t have taught me that move!”

This book was recommended to me, even though I am not a basketball fan. I don't watch it. I don't play it. It took 2 sentences to realize this book is not about basketball. It's about people. It's about passion for the things we love. It's about the impact others have on our lives and the inspiration we take from those we look up to. Through the lens of his own excitement, the author captivated me with his knowledge of Kobe's life and the memories that led to the emotional impact of his passing. His writing is engaging and his passion over this remarkable athlete is contagious.
His in-depth look into Kobe's life covers everything from his brutal training schedule to his "Mamba Mentality" to his dedication to the game that was so intense it made even those who knew him best wonder if they really understood him at all. It is a truthful look at one man's life and the lessons he learned along the way. It delves into the amazing accomplishments of one of the most talented people the world has ever seen, then goes deeper to uncover the methods, habits, mindsets, and obsessions that propelled him to victory. At its core, this book is a how-to for greatness.
This book provided a fascinating and insightful look into the life and mindset of Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. The author skillfully delved into the various aspects of Kobe's career, from his early days as a young player with a thirst for knowledge to his transformation into a legendary athlete and entrepreneur. The book not only chronicles Kobe's basketball journey but also touches on the challenges he faced, including his personal struggles and injuries, making it a well-rounded portrayal of the man behind the Mamba Mentality.
What stood out the most was how the book highlighted Kobe's relentless curiosity and determination to learn from others, not just in basketball but in various fields. His dedication to self-improvement and his commitment to his craft serve as powerful lessons for anyone looking to excel in their chosen path. Overall, this book is a captivating tribute to Kobe Bryant's legacy, offering valuable insights into his mindset and the principles that drove his success. It's a must-read for basketball enthusiasts and anyone seeking inspiration from the life of a true icon.
Before I was introduced to this book, I was thinking, “I think I’ve heard of Kobe Bryant. Isn’t he a famous athlete or something?” This book not only gives a great look into Kobe as a basketball player, but who he was as a person as well in a very intriguing style. This book is well written giving you the same level of excitement as if you were actually at a game watching Kobe Bryant playing basketball as he pursues his basketball career.
This gives a great look into Kobe’s life. The author says it like it is. Kobe wasn’t perfect, but he was a very committed basketball player. He was committed to being the best he could be, putting everything he had into it. It is inspirational to see who Kobe was.
It is inspiring to see into Kobe Bryant’s mind and understand the way he thought and how it allowed him to become who he was. His methods apply not just to basketball but to all aspects of life. I thought I was just going to learn about a basketball player, but I ended up learning more about how I can improve myself as well. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a better person whether or not you are already a Kobe Bryant fan. I am a fan now!
You can clearly tell the author put a lot of time and passion into learning who Kobe Bryant was beyond just his basketball stats. Anyone who is looking for a role model or who wants to progress in life, should read this book as it dives into not only Kobe’s dedication, but also how he overcame obstacles.
For years Kobe Bryant has been an inspiration to many young athletes, and this book shows who the man behind the ball was. The author includes many anecdotes, personal stories and emotional moments that drove Kobe to being one of the most successful and revered athletes to date. It details his life on and off the court and how he maintained his positivity and dedication for success through it all. Definitely, a must read for any young or old athlete.
I would also argue that anyone, even those who are not basketball or sports fans, can benefit from the inspiration delivered in this book. The author showcases Kobe Bryant’s work ethic, drive for success and influence amongst others.
This book was written in such a way that anyone can benefit from the guidance and discipline of Kobe Bryant.
What Kobe Left Behind, is a powerful novel that tells the story of Kobe’s climb to the legend he was before death and after. Before reading this book all I knew was the way he died and that he played for the Lakers. The author, Eli Ihej brings Kobe’s achievements to life, and by doing so, I felt a loss I hadn’t felt at the time of his death. Ihej describes a man with intense work ethics, a keen mindset to be the best at his craft. Through these pages I have a glimpse of who Kobe was and what he was about.
What Kobe Left Behind follows Kobe from a very young age, this book documents the man’s love for the game. His determination and drive in everything he did. The chapter, The Detective, homes in on Kobe’s curious and reflective nature. This book will have you in awe of the legend but also contemplating your life choices.
It's an emotional and motivational read. I highly recommend this book for fans of Kobe Bryant and anyone looking for inspiration. Much of what Kobe did to uplift himself came from asking questions, listening to the answers, and learning from others successes and failures.
Very impressive story and a high level of composure.
According to the story "What Kobe Left Behind," professional author Eli Ihej honours the NBA legend Kobe Bryant by taking fans on a moving literary journey. Alongside his feats on the court, the book dives into the significant experiences that created Kobe. Ihej expertly creates a realistic picture of Kobe's journey from his early years to his legendary NBA career and beyond through pains-taking research and an incredible story.
The "Obsession" chapter stands noteworthy because it provides insightful details on Kobe's persistent energy and goodwill. Readers are given a profound grasp of the mindset that catapulted him to greatness through colourful descriptions and powerful narratives.
It isn't easy to wrap up the novel because I never knew too many details about his lifestyle until I went through Eli's immersive understanding of writing, which builds a connection of feelings with Kobe. May the soul of the NBA legend rest in peace
Kevin Hart in basketball camp talking about how he knew his career was over the moment he met Kobe made me laugh while feeling sorry for the guy. I'm glad he was able to find work in Hollywood. One of the many stories in this book that made me smile.
Loved the backstory.
It wasn't just the grueling hours Kobe put in. It was his entire worth ethic. He never quit. Even with a torn Achilles heel, he finished on his terms. He also asked everyone for advice and not just NBA stars. Authors, actors, film directors....heck even Elon Musk. He wrote rap, stories, and even directed.
I remember a section where a teammate was invite for blackout training. He thought they were going to party....poor guy. Intense training that probably felt like Marine bootcamp.
Absolutely loved his dad and that he showed up at his game and told him that no matter win or lose he loved Kobe. His childhood showed the power of parenting and supporting. I'm a mom myself and I think so many kids just would bloom if more people used this type of mantra.
I’ve never enjoyed basketball, but I was intrigued by Kobe because I have a daughter and he’s a wonderful example of a “girl-dad” who’s commitment to greatness flows from his basketball career into his exceptional family. This inspiring novel is about so much more than basketball; it highlights the people and persistence that made Kobe the influential figure he was. The author’s passion and knowledge captivated me with the details of Kobe's life and the emotional impact of his passing. His writing flowed well in a way that made me forget I was reading a book. I could imagine every story and moment as if I were watching it on tv.
This in-depth story of Kobe’s life and legacy shined light on his training schedule, mindset, determination, mentality, and dedication to basketball. The lessons he learned along the way, and the hardships he overcame gave me goosebumps. The author, Eli Ihej, through his artful writing, ignited a fight in me that had been long buried. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to succeed in their field, sports fan or not.
I went into this not knowing what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised when I was thrown into Kobe's life from the very beginning. The author describes a reaction I remember many having when news of Kobe passed away; shock and immense sadness among them. Then, he poses a great question: why was Kobe so important? So iconic? At the end of the day, why should we care?
We get to read about Kobe's endless hard work and routine, from the time he was a child. I especially loved the breakdown of his daily routine: starting from early in the morning to 10 at night. Interviews and conversations are quoted and offer an inside-look into who Kobe was. It's a rarity that we meet someone so dedicated to their craft as Kobe was. Eli Ihej is a dedicated fan and talented writer that opens the door to Kobe's methodology and life, allowing us a walk down memory lane. Even seasoned fans may learn a thing or two along the way!
The book promises a lot, the gimmicky approach on the back turned me off initially from picking up the book. The author's apparent passion and commitment to the topic convinced me otherwise, i.e. the reference list on this book is 40 pages long, also the topics of leadership and personal power are some of my favorites.
Studying the science of achievement is essential to getting more from life and simply asking better questions, which is, what thought is, the repetition of questions and answers.
This is a refreshing, easy to read book on important topics. Kobe had the science down to an art; he is a truly fascinating and remarkable individual that deserves great consideration.
This is a comprehensively researched topic and definitive source to learn more about an individual that could easily be considered the best player to ever play one of the most popular sports known to man.
What Kobe Left Behind: The Playbook from an Extraordinary Life Is a book with a simple message, that there is more to a legend than meets the eye. This is a book where it is evident that the author has painstakingly combed the tiniest details out of a man's life to deliver more than a biography but instead an inspirational glimpse into the inner workings of a hero's mind. Kobe has been seen as a generational role model who crossed racial lines to inspire a nation. Kobe's tragic death was not the end of the legend but the growth of something more. After reading What Kobe Left Behind: The Playbook from an Extraordinary Life I feel that the personal anecdotes have given me a glimpse into something greater than self. This book is a tale that leads to self-discovery through the truth of Kobe's success.
I’m only mad at the author because he reminded me how sad it was that Kobe left us. :/ Otherwise, I’ve got nothing but love for this book. It’s so thoroughly researched and written with such tenderness that you can feel how much Ihej genuinely loved Kobe Bryant.
If you’re a basketball fan, this book is jam packed full of nostalgia for you. The author definitely did his homework. I was a little bored with the details since I was never a huge basketball fan, but the book was still very accessible to me. And as we all know, and the book illustrates well, Kobe was more than a basketball player.
I loved the pop culture references throughout the book. I had almost completely forgotten about the Real World game. Thanks for the memories!
As I swept my eyes across the first line of the introduction, I was immediately hooked. It brought me back to the moment I heard about Kobe Bryant's plane crash in 2020 and how shaken I was by the news. Reading how this experience personally touched the author and bridging the connection he had as a lifelong Lakers fan reminded me of my love for basketball and the impact it has beyond the court.
Although I've only read the introduction and chapter two, I can recommend this book to anyone, whether a basketball fan or not. I appreciated the valuable nuggets. I discovered this in the short time I spent reading.
Let me say its been years since I thought about the day we lost a legend. As I read this book, I was brought back to the time, the sadness and emptiness that we all were left with when Kobe Bryant left this world. This gave us a insight to what was put in to the life of a super start and how much he loved what he did. When we think about a super star we often just see what is in front of us. But we don't see the love and passion and work that was put in. In this book we see the passion and work, but we see it from a fans point of view. It is a very good read and one that I would say is a must read.
I wouldnt call myself an avid basketball fan, but even I was engrossed as early as the introduction. Delivering a humanizing take on a legend that almost seems larger than life, the first few chapters allowed me to see and understand aspects of Kobe that I had never even considered. The writing style was crisp and story driven, while still being informative and grounded in reality. Whether a die hard Kobe fun itching for more info on your hero or a passerby wondering what all the hoopla is about, I would definitely recommend this read for and entertaining and satisfying experience.
Detailed stories about my favorite basketball player of all time. Stories I've never heard before and added context to stories I had. I am amazed how much impact Kobe had, not only in the sports world, but on life in general. Chapters on Atonement and the Enemy Within are enlightening. Very informative and worth the read whether you're a sports fan or not.
