When I tell you the amount of swooning I did in this book, you probably wouldn’t believe me. Heck, I probably wouldn’t have believed me. But it’s entirely true, and probably embarrassingly accurate, how perfect of a book boyfriend Garrett is. And while there were many small, beautiful, wonderful moments to swoon over, there was really one in particular that had me on my knees. One moment that solidified everything….which of course I won’t share, because *spoilers*, and when you read the book, it’s something you need to experience to get the full effect. But I digress.
In all honesty, the tropes in this book aren’t even some of my most favorite, even though they are ones I’ve definitely enjoyed. I’ll read and enjoy most anything if it’s a good story, and it was the story that sounded interesting to me when I read the blurb, for certain. Fake relationship, drunken Vegas marriage, friends to lovers, all of these sound like a fun and engaging story, forced proximity, yeah, that’s definitely one that I love, color me more intrigued. But it was the relationship between them that was the true all star, not to mention Garrett’s relationship with her daughter, who he so affectionately calls Meerkat (and there’s even a HUGE swoon moment involving that one too).
I don’t want to get into all the tiny little things that Garrett does that make him so freaking perfect. There are truly far to many. And he doesn’t just rush in to try and rescue her at every turn - that first interaction they have when he pretends to be her husband comes only after he actually gives her time to get rid of the problem on her own, but he finds the perfect moment to intervene, and it definitely endears him even more. When they drunkenly get married in Vegas, and he, the more sober of the pair, holds back from what he truly wants, just makes him hotter. He’s been interested in her since the moment they met four years prior, but he’s been biding his time, waiting for her to notice him noticing her. She’s definitely noticed him, but never in a million years thought he would even remotely be interested in her, especially with her daughter in the picture. But this unexpected Vegas twist, he takes it as he chance to really win her over.
So Garrett convinces her that they staying together will benefit them both - hello fantastic forced proximity tension. Her with potential custody issues with her baby daddy (who she despises), and him with his playboy reputation at work. And while she keeps telling herself everything he’s doing is for show, and that he isn’t really interested in her, he keeps doing whatever he can to convince that it’s NOT for show, and he really does want her. He puts his heart out there over and over, and it’s gutting to watch him step back when she doesn’t see what he’s trying to show her. But she’s self conscious, and most definitely gun shy when it comes to her history with men, so she just doesn’t pick up on it. All the while, he wiggles his way more and more into her heart, not to mention her daughter’s heart. When he finally lays it all on the line, and she finally opens her eyes, their relationship blooms into something absolutely perfect. And oh boy, is Garrett a dirty talker! Their spice is scorching, and only adds to the absolute amazingness that is this book. And the epilogue, ugh, it had me in tears. I definitely wasn’t expecting this book to blow me away, and I think that’s what makes it even better. I’m officially obsessed with Garrett, and he has vaulted himself onto my list of best book boyfriends ever.
