The first entry in the Kate Milholland series is a great introduction to a strong character, a lady lawyer. I had read # 6 in the series and enjoyed it, so I thought I would begin at the beginning. Kate is trying to prevent a hostile takeover of a pharmaceutical company founded by a friend of hers. The book is well done, but our girl gets the crap beat out of her several times and keeps on ticking. She doesn't however, have miraculous healing powers, she is hospitalized and her life is in danger. Score a point for some realism. Exciting, well plotted, although you may be able to detect the chief offender fairly easily. Recommended.
In my current project of re-reading some of the crime series that have been on my shelves for ages to see how they have held up and whether I should put them into the charity-shop bags, this held up pretty well - I am certainly quite motivated to go on to the next in sequence!
An exciting first mystery with the detective being a rich young lawyer who works in the mergers and acquisitions portion of a Chicago law firm, where she is assigned to work defending a client (whose President/CEO is a friend and an occasional lover) threatened by a hostile takeover bid, which then blossoms intro a murder investigation when a young family member and major shareholder is murdered. It’s a fascinating glimpse at the kind of life I would never want.
2020 note: I doubt I would make it halfway through the book today, as I have developed an aversion to novels and movies about lawyers, particularly corporate lawyers. (Also psychologists and psychiatrists and any other kind of mental health worker.)
