1.5 don't-step-in-this-shit stars

This should have been my kind of book (cowboys!), but, yowza, this was nothin' but a mess. The book is short, but there are so many plot lines tangled in, there is no room left to develop characters, situations, or the relationship between Ben, one of the new hired hands at the Wylde ranch, and Jessup, one of the four Wylde brothers; they're all cowboys, all hot, and all GAY! It's a gay delight down at the ranch, people. Mosey on down and join the hoedown.

Ben is closeted and has has had only one experience with a man when he meets Jessup. He has longings for Jessup, but the way he deals is by running away and sulking like a child. Ben coming to terms with his sexuality and his love for Jessup would have been plenty of angst for the story, but nooooo....we get evil homophobes, gay bashing, hospitalizations (plural), "broken" condoms , Big Misunderstandings, friends with terminal illness, and so on.

Even little things here didn't make sense. For example, Ben is broke; he worries about his bank account being in the single digits every month, and yet he was approved for a car loan AND a mortgage (without having a job). In what universe does this happen?

Also, the story line with Chase, the man Jessup meets at a gay bar, was clearly a tear jerker, but how is it that Chase and Jessup became bosom buddies in like four hours? If Chase was so amazing, why did he have no other friends? And what was the deal with Paul, his driver? Why throw him in there if he's just going to serve as a sort of odd foil to Jessup? None of this worked.

Even the dramatic New York reconciliation at the end had me rolling my eyes. Ben's big revelation doesn't impact Jessup at all. He barely blinks. I'd think this would have been a life changer?

The relationship between the two men was so thinly sketched (and not remotely steamy) that I had a hard time believing in the HEA. It isn't a HEA if it's not earned.

Throw in some really shitty writing with gobs of dangling metaphors, and there was little here to like.

I loved the cover of this book and since this was about cowboys, made it double yummy. I enjoyed this story about four brothers who own a ranch in a small town. Now having them all being gay is a bit much, but it didn't bother me too much. This is pretty much an OFY story between Jesse and Ben and at times it was a little annoying with Ben always running away and not facing his feelings. I did find the parts with Troy a little unfinished. The events with him were thrown in, but then it was like the author just dropped it and that part of the story was not really resolved. I don't know if more will be put into the next book if this series continued. I just felt that part unfinished. What I didn't expect was the ending with Chase, it was just unexpected and emotional, did not see that coming. All in all a good story and I look forward to see where the author takes this series with the other brothers.

OMG I loved this book. It made me cry in the end when Chase died. I thought he had his cancer beat but in the end it was stronger than him. I am glad that Chase and Jessup became good friends.

I'm thinking strong 3.5 to 4 stars

Another book that made me cry.. No fancy whistles, paranormal, mate.. just your average hot cowboys coming to terms with each other. That's not what made me cry though.. Jess's friendship with Chase was lots of ups and downs and helped him come to terms with dealing with feelings towards a closeted male.

There were times I did feel like the timeline was skewed? off-putting? out of left field? The word I was originally thinking of has now escaped from me.. ahhh.. got it..... disjointed! For example the first intimate contact these two had really did seem out of left field to me. We know Jess is gay and interested and wouldn't object but Ben.. even though we know Ben has been having urges and feelings he didn't seem like he was actually at a point to make the first move and explore. Felt like we skipped a bit of his development.

Besides a few times where I felt Ben's development was fast tracked to the future, this was a great read. Looking forward to more from the Wylde Bros

Oh man I love me a cowboy romance. I read a lot of them - all kinds - M/F and M/M. I think that anyone who is a fan of the "Blaecleah Brothers" series by Stormy Glenn would probably like this series too. It was a pretty good story. One of the characters is deeply in the closet and I am not a huge fan of the closet crisis for a basis of M/M romance conflict. But overall it was pretty entertaining and I am sure I will read the rest of the series as they come out.

3.75. I liked this book. It started out a little slow for me but it did get better. The angst was at a manageable level and not over the top. I liked Ben and Jessup's progression. The ending was a little out of the blue but it was a good start to the series. Since this is a Lynn Hagen book, I really was expecting someone to shift into a wolf or bear.

Congrats Lynn Hagrn on another succesful book!

The story about Jess and Ben made me eager to read everything in the book. When i read about Chase i thought he'll be falling in love with one of the other Wylde brothers. Apparently not.

I cried. I freakin' cried at that last scene when it appears Chase's sickness wasn't something that can be treated.

I love a book that makes me feel the pain as well as the happiness of the characters and this book definitely made me feel Jess' pain, Chase's optimism, Ben's support.

Congratulations on a job well done Lynn Hagen!

I just love this book. I did not like Ben running all the time, but at the end he step up. I cry when Chase died. I would love to see him with a loving partner. I cannot wait to read Elliot, Carson and Cory´s story.

This book is about Ben's self discovery. How Ben struggling with his new self, is he gonna admit it or ignore it. Ben faced with options, he will admit his feeling toward Jess and pursuit it further or he will completely ignore it because what people thought are more important than his own happiness. Ben must solved his problems and overcome his demons before reached happiness for a lifetime with Jess.

Original Blogpost: http://headouttheoven.blogspot.com/20...

You may be wondering why I decided to make one review for two books by Lynn Hagen. Well, I started reading Carson and then I realized halfway through that I had also read Jessup way back when it was first published. What I noticed was that these two stories ran in parallels. Both stories happen at the same time period, characters were more or less exactly the same, and I was getting glimpses of incidents from the first book in the second. So off I went and decided to read the first book once more. That way, I was able to cohere the two stories and get deeper into the plots.

After reading both books, there was one pretty glaring detail that bothered me: Chase. Chase was Jessup's friend and played a huge role in his life and Ben's. This was a friend who had a lot of text and pages devoted to him and his situation twisted my emotions. What I am having trouble with is that Chase's character was not given the same importance in the second book. In fact, it was the undesirable Troy who was given more importance. I felt that Chase should have been given more due - well, that's just my opinion so don't mind me.

Jessup and Ben's story was a good romance but it got swept aside by Chase. Yes, that character is a HUGE one so imagine my confusion when it was swept aside in the second book. Other than Chase, the thing going on between these two men was the same formulaic romance we are all used to. The left hook Ben-is-married-has-kid-is-not-married thing was just that: a left hook that came out of nowhere and got resolved from out of nowhere.

The story of Carson and Sam itself was quite romantic but a bit overdone? The hot and cold approach was nice at first but when it kept going on as it did for a lengthy time, I got a bit frustrated with Sam's character. My fault is that personally, I don't like hot and cold situations of any kind and I place it under the category of indecisiveness which I absolutely place well beneath my boot heel. So when I got a huge dose of it, I just reacted, is all. Forgive me.

All throughout these four men's stories, I was more curious about Cody and Boone's story. Cody and Boone's story has the potential for a great read, I hope it reaches its potential. I have a pretty good inkling to where the story of Courtney and Elliot was coming and going, too.

The way these two books are written, now that I have re-read book 1 and finished book 2, is it right of me to conclude this is how the next installments are going to be written as well? I think I am, so it would be interesting to see which character gets swept under the rug again. It would also be nice to see the story unfold from a different perspective as well. Especially from Boone's. Again, if it were not for Chase's character, I think I would have read these two books differently.

Please post comments on Kiwi's 5 sweet pea review at http://mrsconditreadsbooks.com/index....

The author’s dedication to her friend Richard at the beginning of the book is beautiful and heartfelt. Don’t skip over it.

This is the first book of Hagen’s new Wilde Boys series and let me tell you that it’s off to a great start. The book starts off by introducing the Wilde boys, very hot and sexy cowboy brothers who run a ranch and all gay. This book tells Jessup’s tale. Jess falls for one of his ranch hands, a big hunk of cowboy named Ben. Ben’s looking to make a fresh start in a new town after he was run out of the last town for being gay. Ben is cautious because of his experience in the last town, a little on the innocent side when it comes to being with a man, sweet but in the closet, and Jess falls hard for him. The two men travel the road towards building a relationship, but that journey is filled with huge obstacles. Along the way Jess meets Chase and an amazing friendship blossoms. I just have to mention Chase’s character in the book because to me, his character and his story pull the heartstrings more. You see, I feel that Chase’s character is important as he brought Jess and Ben even closer together. You got the feeling that Chase was an angel that was put in Jess’s path for a reason. The author was spot on in her dedication to her friend Richard. I am sure that everyone has a person, either past or present that they were fortunate to have known. An unexpected surprise from Ben’s past could have pushed the two men apart but then Lady Hagen worked her magic and turned that into something wonderful. The ending was bittersweet and I will advise you to have a BIG box of Kleenex handy. I give this book two thumbs up, and would definitely recommend it. If you’re a fan of sexy cowboys in love with each other then this is the story for you. I am really looking forward to reading this series.

*Excuse me if I sound a bit lifeless, I just had my heart ripped out of me no big deal*

Love me a story that just tugs on my feelings. A nicely spun tale of someone going through the hardships of coming out then to be rewarded with something more precious, the pain seems worth it. It was so much more than gay love between two hot cowboys. I love Jess' and Chase's strong friendship so much because it actually felt real. And come the ending, the pain was unbearable I cried. Wailing and all. Of course, I can't ignore the Wylde family who were all loving in their own ways. It's almost impossible to not get attached to them (if not for them being fictional and all).

What seemed like a short, plot-less story turns out to be a pleasant tale of true friendship and love.
Superb read, this is my favourite cowboy m/m so far.

I got through reading this at 4AM this morning and I had to be at work at 8..... i just couldn't stop lol.
Im not going to give too much away - This is the first book in the series and I am interested in seeing where this family is going story wise.

I do have to say there was a part of this book that literally had be sobbing, and i mean had to put the book down because i couldn't see through my tears sobbing, I wasn't expecting ..... what happened.. to happen and I was ohhhhh so caught off guard and upset sniff sniff.
Be prepared for a litle more then your standard cowboy fluff.

This was a perfectly wonderful book. There were no magical creatures or men with powers. Just 4 cowboy brothers who run a ranch and are fighting not to fall in love with their hired hands. It was predictable that Jessup and Ben would end up together, but they still underwent many hardships as a couple that I wasn't expecting. I'm glad that Jessup met Chase and instead of sleeping together they became best friends, although I cried like a little baby when Chase died. I loved the surprise of Jacob, it just made the entire story and angst worthwhile. Great book!

This was filled with very hot Cowboys! Who can resist Cowboys! Jessup and Ben's relationship was filled with lots of twists and turns and ups and downs. Most of the twists I did not see coming. This was one action packed book. This was one I could not stop at ready just the first in the series and spent the weekend reading all of them with barley a break to sleep. This series will land in my re-read file.

2.89 stars. I wasn't feeling this. For one it jumped around. One second Ben is getting threatened and the next he finds out he is a dad to the next he is back with jess getting married... uh, what happened to the whole angst closeted thing. One second Im denying myself and acting weird then bam boom im out and proud! WTF never felt more all over the place. And the side character chase... gawd I don't even know with this...

will pass on the rest of the series.

First time reading this author and I loved it. Loved the characters and loved the Wylde family. I can't wait to continue on with the series. I was angered by Buck and Tory and can't wait to see if they get theirs in upcoming books. I hope there doesn't come a time where I actually have to like them. Jess and Ben made me so very happy, and for anyone out there there's wedding band (not sure if this will count) and a wedding so points for August.

This book made me cry! and I am sooo not a crier!
I like the Wylde boys! And I really liked that Jessup is a big man just like Ben. Not all our books can be a big buff guy with a tiny feisty twink...But they do have their place ;-)
My only complaint was that I feel like some of the scenes were unnecessary and it started to drag in certain places. But it was well rounded. Great ending!

Adding an extra for Chase.

I thought Jess and Ben could have talked more. The whole ordeal at the end could have been handled differently. Is no one pissed at Ben anymore?

I won't be reading the rest of this series I don't think. Since we kind of already clued in as to who's going to end up with who. Not to mention I hear they are overlapping stories and basically word for word parts :(

This was a hot and sweet read, with its angst and its sweet and drama moments. I did enjoy the portrayal of different types of Gay males - not everyone is cut the same way, and yet all seem to struggle equally with love :D I was not particularly drawn to the type of writing though, it felt a bit rushed to me. The story more than made up for it, and made me cry as well :D
