It's the best fiction I've read or watched so far! In love with each detail each quote, a masterpiece ended my reading challenge! Couldn't ask for a better end! Ruby Sparks, sparked my heart!
My favorite quote by Calvin Weir-Fields:
This is the true and impossible story of my very great love. In the hope that she will not read this and reproach me, I have withheld many telling details: her name, the particulars of her birth and upbringing, and any identifying scars or birth marks. All the same, I cannot help but write this for her, to tell her "I'm sorry for every word I wrote to change you, I'm sorry for so many things. I couldn't see you when you were here and, now that you're gone, I see you everywhere." One may read this and think it's magic, but falling in love is an act of magic, so is writing. It was once said of Catcher In The Rye, "That rare miracle of fiction has again come to pass: a human being has been created out of ink, paper and the imagination." I am no J.D. Salinger, but I have witnessed a rare miracle. Any writer can attest: in the luckiest, happiest state, the words are not coming from you, but through you. She came to me wholly herself, I was just lucky enough to be there to catch her.''

I cannot physically express how much I enjoyed this. I loved the movie and immediately wanted to go back and read the script. Despite Ruby Sparks being classed as a Romance there is an essence of horror within it. It isn’t “scary” in the sense of traditional terror but it’s terrifying as to how Calvin treats Ruby. She is his creation and he can do anything to her without her having any true understanding of her own emotions. She has no free will.

The ending scene where she finds out she is simply a figment created by his imagination is horrific. The fight scene at the end still churns my stomach:

“I am not your child. You don’t get to decide what I do.”
“Wanna bet?”
“What?”
“I’m pretty sure I can make you do whatever I want.”

That sentence stuck with me, it’s a threat mixed with uncertain emotions that Ruby is unable to feel. Calvin forces Ruby to humiliate herself by doing the things he writes for his own pleasure. The moment he continued to write, “You’re a genius” for her to say to him as he smiled and watched her corrupt herself was quite frankly disturbing. She had no sense of self, practically held hostage by her lover. Ruby is a character that will never leave my mind.

Ruby Sparks by Zoe Kazan

10 out of 10 for Zoe Kazan, alas, Paul Dano takes points off

I am in awe of Zoe Kazan, who is not just a splendid actress (the word to use these days is actor for male, female and other, but then I am old fashioned and it is not like many, if any, read this and then there is a backlash, comments…there is advantage, sometimes bliss in anonymity, you do not get recognition, but then nobody attacks you) but such an accomplished, impressive writer, author of a successful script

Awe is one element of Positivity http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/05/p... as identified by the ultimate expert in the field, Barbara Fredrickson, in her classic book, wherein you find about being positive – people who are positive live longer, more successful private and professional lives, they get sick less often, when it happens, it is for shorter periods

The other ingredients of Positivity are amusement (humor is also a Character Strength, and you find them on the net listed at the site created by the co-founder of Positive Psychology, Martin Seligman http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/11/f... who has written a few outstanding books, proposing the PERMA happiness formula) interest, inspiration, hope, pride, gratitude, serenity, joy and love…

There is a quandary here, for if Barbara Fredrickson lists pride among the elements that are essential for Positivity, at the same time we have Modesty among the Character Strengths, and thus we may be tempted to say that we have a paradox here, a situation that may block our felicity or/and our positivity…

One has to choose between being proud and modest, or it can be both, perhaps the Golden Mean as advertised by Aristotle http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/02/t... offers the best solution, in that we need to take the middle course, one is not brave if one rides a motorbike with two hundred miles per hour, in the rain, one is foolish, just like staying always in the house is not prudent

The brave would find the balance, and in the case of pride versus modesty, another example can be used, from The Six Pillars of Self Esteem http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/06/s... by Nathaniel Branden, the nec plus ultra in self-esteem, a marvel that explains how the arrogant, boasting, the Trumps of the world do not have confidence, self-esteem of the kind that we need, the one that knows his, her, their value, does not feel the need to inflate, use pompous language

Maybe pride in that sense is also the ‘modesty’ of knowing that you have done something special, excellent and you are modest about it, just like I boast here about the (small, let us put tiny, to show off modesty) role I have played in the Revolution that took down Ceausescu http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/r... in 1989, when I was a student)

I have met with Michael Meyers, correspondent for Newsweek and this is how I came to be mentioned in the article (the link above connects with a copy that included the passage where I show up) that described what has happened, how one of the most vile tyrants was overthrown and then executed

In his marvelous The King’s English Magister Ludi Kingsley Amis http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/12/m... writes about words that have changed their meaning, and execution is one of them, it had been used for the punishment that involved an ax, the beheading of the man or woman, but these days it does not involve such means, however cruel it still is…

Andrei Finti was a hero of the 1989 Revolution and I have to try and pay homage to this Superman – alas, with few, or no readers, there is not much, if anything I can do to make the actions of this man known, never mind recognized, admired – in my humble scribblings, for there is no other laudatum for the one who has been the leader of the group that has protested at the Roman Square, he has sought no glory

There have been so many tens of thousands of liars, opportunists, vile fellows that have claimed benefits, received official papers, money, property, positions, power, and thus it became ignoble to associate with what became a fraud – title of Revolutionary might as well be translated into arivist – which is such a shame and horrible degradation

I did not get the recognition (and I sometimes regret it, there it is here, in black and white) and have not gained a penny from my (microscopic, especially when compared with the leadership of Andrei Finti) presence in front of the ‘forces of the despot’, and this is unjust, the hoi polloi that had nothing to do with the revolt, bravery, spirit of sacrifice get the cash and the ‘glory’ and the few of us who really risked their lives sit and write these lines, instead of basking in the sun in Tahiti, swim with the dolphins…

I am just joking here (albeit with a bitter smile) and let me say a few words about Ruby Sparks, for I see that I am finished here, and did not even touch on the subject, which is a generous one, now that Artificial Intelligence has made such huge progress, I say that soon it will be able to ‘create’ ruby Sparks beyond the big screen, in scripts and narratives, we (well, you, if you are younger) will have the chance to embrace a version of Ruby Sparks, not as resplendent as Zoe Kazan, but ultra-smart and omniscient in what we want, how and when we want it, able to communicate with us without any trouble or quarrel…

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/u... – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

This piece was a beautiful, captivating story of a creator and his creation that explored our darkest human need to control and modify the people in our lives to be exactly how we want them to be. My only regret is that I did not discover it sooner. If you are a fan of romcoms with suspense and twists or loved reading Pride and Prejudice, I highly recommend Ruby Sparks as it's now one of my top three favourites.
