Bruce Amherst has never loved his wife, and every day he can feel himself becoming more of a monster. It all started with Marah's scent, a strawberry musk that has seeped into his soul and drives him to perform brutal and profane acts that are slowly escalating into murderous rage.

When Bruce discovers his wife's strange compulsion that is driving all of this, it becomes clear that something... a presence... has infected them both, making death the only likely escape.

If you have read Allison M. Dickson's "Taste," then you absolutely must read this terrifying follow-up that describes just what was going through Bruce's mind while Marah was living through her own harrowing love sickness.

Another brilliant story by Ms. Dickson (no surprise there). As far as sequels go, this book is, in some ways, superior to the first. It certainly has a more literary edge to it. Sweetness, as this book is appropriately called, is a slightly different animal than it's predecessor. It's more reflective than horrifically gut-wrenching like Taste. It doesn't have the same shock value either, which brings it down just a notch. It's still a well-told and engaging story that chronicles the sexual depravity and perversion of a man and his wife and their dark descent toward self-destruction. If you enjoyed Taste, then you'll find this to be a very familiar tale with haunting echoes of the first book. Definitely a book to read if you like your tales dark and...deliciously twisted.

Everything in Sweetness works as well as I expect from Dickson. Honestly, the male object of affection (Dr. Bruce Amherst) just isn't that interesting. I did enjoy the Ramen Shaman though. A fun read. I'll return for the concluding chapter.
