Wren Romany is as unconventional as they come. Born to a large, devout family and then forced out to fend on her own, she earns her living as a bounty hunter. As her second winter alone looms, she decides to stay in one place for the season. Seeking shelter, she offers her hunting skills in exchange.

Tourth Mynth, the master of the ruined fortress in the valley, needs help. His small household faces a hard winter. As son of a disenfranchised noble, he has plenty of space beneath his roof, but not much to eat. Wren's offer seems a good fit.

Wren soon learns the residents of Iselyn need more than simply meat on their table. The valley's residents squirm beneath a harsh master. Unsolved murder and betrayal lurk in the Mynths' not so distant past. And Tourth's battle with his emotional scars from the recent civil war will determine the fate of the whole valley.

Age Appropriate For: 13 and up (mild violence, some romance)
Best for Ages: 13 and up

I was so excited to be asked to review yet another of Rachel’s books. I was honored to be asked to review Duty, and I had enjoyed reading Exchange. So when Rachel asked me to review Wren, I jumped at the chance.

Like Duty, Wren is set in a fictional world. However, it feels more like historical fiction than fantasy. There isn’t any magic, strange creatures, or other creepy fantasy elements. So both those who like mild fantasy and fiction set it times past will enjoy this book.
The basic premise of the story is that siblings are separated and forced to make their own way in the world. I have been interested in reading this series ever since I read a blog post by Rachel Thomson about it years ago. I am very eager to read the other book in the series that has already been published – Taerith.

Overall, I loved that adventure that kept me turning pages. There were a couple of points that things were a little confusing either from the number of characters, or from a messy political situation. But those moments were very few and far between.

Wren is a strong woman, she has to be. She makes her living as a bounty hunter and has earned the reputation of being one of the best. Somehow, Rachel managed to make Wren strong without making her boy-like. Many strong female characters end up hating the fact that they are girls. Wren wears men’s clothes because she needs to, and feels awkward in dresses, but she didn’t seem to hate the fact she was a girl.

The banter in this book was amazing. I mean, who doesn’t love the friendly banter of guys. I liked all the men who worked for Tourth Mynth and how they interacted. A couple of times it was confusing, there were a lot of characters to keep track of, but I loved it.
Tourth I think was my favorite part of the story. His battle with his past was very well done and believable. He was also just an awesome leading guy: strong, handsome, caring, and a man of good character. He is everything a girl could want in a leading man.

The romance was very light and mostly toward the end of the book. I really enjoyed it, though. It was so sweet.

I highly recommend this book for adventure seekers, mild fantasy lovers, mild romance lovers, and readers who enjoy fun banter.

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. I was under no obligation to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are entirely my own.

2025> reading this book always feels like coming home.

This was my fourth time reading this book and I love it even more now than when I first read it in 2013. I loved Wren from the first chapter and only came to love her more as the book progressed. Wren is someone you can look up to, she's strong but likable. She's very wise and knows when to keep her mouth shut. I love how bluntly Wren gives her advice.
Tourth is awesome. He's a guy with real problems, real reactions to them, and real friends. I loved that he really struggled, and not all his problems were fixed at once.
I am a big fan of first-person, and non-magical fantasy, so this book was amazing to read.
I could rave for a long time, but the short of it is, you should read this book. It is awesome.

>>2019. Well, I made it to my fifth read, so it really must be on my top favorites. This book is delightful, and just love every page of it. <3

*long, contented sigh*

Ahhhh, let's just leave it there for the moment. What was the last book I read where I was absolutely in love with Every. Single. Character? (Well, okay, aside from the bad guys. But still.) I cannot name one among this circle of friends and family that I did not absolutely adore. And the relationships!!!! So good!!!! <3<3<3 Seriously, there was so much potential for distrust and jealousy and bickering and all sorts of unnecessary people-drama, and they just pretty much avoided all of it?!? <3<3<3<3<3 That's not to say there wasn't drama and tension--which there was--or that no one ever got mad at anyone else--which they did--but the love and affection and deep, true friendship that cared enough to push when necessary and never faltered through the hardest trials... Oh, I just loved it so much! <3

Wren wasn't just your typical tough girl, and I loved all the different sides to her personality, especially that she hadn't lost her ability to care for and trust people, even though she'd had to be hard and tough for her job. And the way that Tourth (and everyone) took her into their circle and trusted her with what needed to be done, and the way that she joined in wholeheartedly anywhere she was needed, and the little glimpses of her family... My heart absolutely ached for Tourth and what he was going through, even when I didn't know exactly what he was going through. And as I already mentioned, every one of the family/friend circle was absolutely delightful. The story and plot pulled me in and kept me guessing, and I really loved the way things wrapped up.

The only reason I'm taking about half a star off my rating is the amount of implied bad language and one word I wasn't comfortable with (see below). But overall, a lovely, lovely story. <3

4.5 stars

Content--multiple mentions of cursing (no words); two instances of "bastard"; mentions of deaths, murders, war, blood, wounds, and vomiting (not graphic); brief mentions of people thinking of someone as a ghost or a witch; a few kisses (not descriptive)

13+ for mild violence and very mild romance.

I have to say, I enjoy Rachel Rossano's unique writing style. Her books are unlike any that I've ever read. This book was no exception to her imaginative composition. She really did a good job with some of the descriptions. There were times I re-read a sentence to enjoy the imaginative way she described every-day actions.

Wren is the story of a female bounty hunter and an emotionally battle-scarred young man named Tourth. Will Wren and Tourth manage to overturn the ominous plots threatening the kingdom? Will they learn to look beyond their pasts and anticipate a new and better future?

In regard to the characters, I was pleasantly surprised to find that, though Wren was a strong and capable woman, she was not feministic. She did what she had to to survive, but did not hate men or flaunt her roles as a woman. She did not despise marriage, childbearing, or keeping a home. And, perhaps surprisingly, there really wasn't much bounty-hunting in the book. I really identified with Tourth. He was my favorite character. His emotions and inner turmoil in no way detracted from his strength and valor as a warrior, but accented the fact that he was a real, yet likeable human. And, although not characters, the falcons were definitely a favorite aspect of the story!

In regard to the setting, "Wren" is set in a medieval-type world. It is not historical-fiction, but there is no magic or demonic creatures one would almost expect to find in a fantasy. The story has a medieval flare, but it is more of of a colorful embellishment than a real depiction of the historical Middle Ages. Some modern dialogue, phrases, and behavior traits keep it from being what one could call historical.

There were only two minor factors that detracted from the story. There is a plethora of secondary characters, and I could have used a character list to keep them all straight! Also, there was a word (used only twice) that can be considered a swear word in our culture. I really didn't for its use.

Another excellent title by Rossano. Recommended to fans of clean, sorcery-free fantasy/romance/YA fiction. I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. I was under no obligation to write a positive review.

Another great story by Rossano. I was hooked after the first chapter when Wren captures her bounty effortlessly.  This is a fast pace exciting read in which good triumphs. I was especially drawn to Wren’s character. She is mysterious in the beginning and I enjoyed hearing her backstory as the novel evolved.  She is comfortable and confident with herself.  Despite her superior abilities as a huntress and bounty hunter; she remains humble and willing to perform any task needed.  She allows her actions to speak for her instead of relying on words. I also found the author revealing Wren's vulnerabilities and dependence on her faith very refreshing.

Tourth was perhaps not my favorite character but understanding his past helped gain my sympathy.  The romance between the two develops slowly and therefore their coming together at the end felt rushed. Still for such a strong character like Wren I am glad it didn't get too romantic.

The medieval setting within a feudal society is portrayed very well. This seems to be the author's forte. Rossano’s research and historical knowledge shines through her imaginary world so it feels authentic. This is especially true of the hardship and struggles of those living under a tyrant's rule. Overall, I really enjoyed reading Wren, it once again showcases Rossano's skills in building an interesting story with great honorable characters.

It's been a while since I've read this book, but I remember really enjoying it. I loved the character of Wren and her journey. Her family background was interesting and I would love to hear more about her siblings.
The varied characters that she meets in the castle are great! I did like Tourth and the relationship he had with his men and especially his sister.
There was a twist or two at the end that kept me hooked. Definitely recommended to anyone who likes fantasy, strong female characters, and light romance.

I was literally hooked from the first chapter of this book! At no time during the book did the pace lag or did I feel like I needed to take a break or put it down. In fact, just the opposite was true! I didn't want to put it down and read it continuously! Wren is a fast-paced action-packed novel full of intriguing characters and a great story-line! I loved Wren and she became real to me; an amazing woman with no fear of being out of the ordinary! This novel comes full circle and answered almost every question that I had during the book! That is amazing itself since normally I am always left with many questions. I promise that if you just give Wren a try, you will be hooked and won't put it down until you are finished! I am hopeful that this is a start to a new series, hint hint! Great cover, great story, great characters, great writing!!!

Rachel Rossano has once again turned her talent for writing into an engaging tale I could not put down.
Wren is, in my humble opinion, her best work yet.
From the first page, I was drawn into the story and to Wren's character. She's strong, smart, and independent, yet she is also vulnerable and so very real.
Tourth was likeable and realistic, although a few times I wanted to reach into the book and slap him upside the head. (That speaks to the author's abilities to evoke my emotions and keep me entangled in her wonderful story.)
Rachel kept the story line moving along at a rapid clip, drawing the reader along seamlessly for a wonderful adventure.
If you like a good medieval tale, and prefer a "clean" piece of fiction, you'll love this book. I highly recommend it.

This was a lovely romance with a nicely created world where I hope many stories will be born. A comfortable world was established for well developed actions and plot twists. There were great main characters as well as satisfying side characters. I loved how it was a complex world without making things confusing or over done. Instead, the characters and plot pulled you along nicely with an engaging story that kept me turning pages. The Christian slant is prominent but not preachy nor is it denominational. Wren is strong but still feminine and the romance is engaging. The action pulled me and kept me engaged. This is a great beginning to a promising series. By far my favorite book by this author so far. I can't wait to read more of this series.

Wren is a well-written book with an interesting plot and fascinating scenes, but the standout feature of this book is the characters. The realistic qualities of the characters in the book make them relatable across time and location. One particular theme that stood out was forgiveness. As all the characters looked at forgiveness differently, I could identify with them more and more throughout the book. I highly recommend the book for its many positive qualities, but especially for the characters.

By far the best of Rachel's books that I've read. This one felt complete, whereas her others always left me wondering if I had missed something. This one had a nice story line with well defined characters. My one complaint is that the romance story line with rather sparse, overshadowed by everything else.

I thoroughly enjoy her books and am so glad this is longer, more time to fall in love with the characters, to get more than a taste of a story. Rachel always creates beautiful worlds with her words and her characters are so strong and believable.

I found a fun new author! I love good clean books where there is action, adventure, a little dip into political intrigue and a dash of romance. Wren totally fits that bill. (just FYI it is a bit on the Christian Fiction side, but I love that too)

Wren is an irresistible heroine. Her focused purposefulness gives men pause when they only anticipate uninformed, submissive women. To their surprise, this diminutive powerhouse can track and take down stocky criminal men no one else can locate, then turn them in for the bounty. On a gentler note, she befriends wild falcons, who adore her. Her horse has an almost human relationship with her. I’d like to meet this woman!

I love her selfless courage, integrity and faith. She loves Deus, the Creator of all, and His Savior. Her contemplation of Him stirs a bit of poetry in her: "Dawn would reveal a world bathed in white, clean with newfound beauty, like a soul after the touch of the Savior's blood."

Will her toughness melt in the face of love? I kept wondering if she even could trade in her pants and manly ways for a womanlier role.

While this story follows some of the standard patterns of a romantic novel, it has interesting twists and departures that keep the reader glued to the page. And amidst the medieval-type setting and storyline are deeper messages of dealing with horrific sin and betrayals.

It’s another good read from Mrs. Rossano!

One of the best books I have read.

The world is drawn as the action & interactions of the characters progress. No many-page descriptions but still the color and feel of the world is authentic.

The main characters are strong & deal with deep themes of guilt, forgiving, mercy, courage, what would be ptsd in the modern world, faith and honor in a midieval setting. There is a romance brewing too.
It's clean and the author depicts the story through the lens of faith. It's not preachy; it's very real!

Absolutely wonderful. It was creative, unique and captivating. I loved the strength of Wren, her talents and insight, but most especially that she didn't loose her femininity. While a piece of what appears to be an series on the Romany family, if my wish was granted I'd have Rachel finish off the series.

It is an amazing book. Quite a rare find, Wren doesn't wear men clothes because she wants to be a man but it is just more convenient also most books like this the main character will have an alterior motive for making freinds and plans to betray them.... But this is so simple and nice.

Sadly I can't say the same for many of the same authors books :(

I really liked the character of Wren but maybe this is a multi-author series or something because I felt in the dark about her past life. Anyway, this was a nice book and I look forward to more by this author. I think I have read just about all of her books to date.

This story caught my attention as soon as I read the summary. This another fantasy set in a medieval-esque world by Rachel Rossano who wrote Duty. After reading Duty, I had high expectations for Wren and I wasn’t disappointed.

Plot – Grade A

The plot took the bounty hunter becomes a hero motif and added enough twists to keep me hopping (in a good way). Wren is not the typical female bounty hunter, she’s not a girly girl but neither is she disdainful of women who stick with convention or like being the more delicate and genteel lady. I was thrilled to read this kind of story that allowed Wren to step outside the conventional and softer roles of medieval/fantasy women without her demeaning them or hating men. She steps into bounty hunting because she needs to survive. This plot brought in the threads of romance and mystery to skillfully combine with the spiritual journey Tourth is on as well as Wren’s finding her place without losing focus or becoming too difficult to follow.

Content – Grade A-

This is a clean Christian fantasy. There is a development of a romance between Wren and Tourth and also two secondary characters but it is all quite sweet (nothing more than a few kisses and some hugs). It was also cute how both Tourth and Wren tried to reason their way out of falling in love. I call it the knowing smile reaction because I (and plenty of characters) can’t help but smile knowingly when they try to explain away the attraction. :)

There is violence in this story but nothing feels extraneous or unnecessarily graphic. There are also references to women being in danger of unwanted attention or being forced into selling their bodies in order to survive, but each time it occurs it is handled very tastefully. Language is handled in general by a simple statement along the lines of “so and so blistered the air with every name he could think of and some I hadn’t heard before.” I was impressed with how it was handled without resorting to a ridiculous substitute like “you’re going to Riggy diggy ding dong pay for this” because if Rossano hadn’t opted for this approach, it would have been very difficult for me to read the book. There are exactly two exceptions to the language rule where the main villain is called a “bastard” not because of illegitimate birth but because that was the analysis of his character. I was surprised when this word was used in this context due to all the other language being handled so skillfully with the “readers can fill in the blank” strategy. Some Christians will be very offended and others will be okay with that choice. I am slightly disappointed but I am also grateful that it wasn’t some worse name and since it is only used twice, I can tolerate it more than if it and other profanity was peppered throughout.

Technical – B+

There were only three or four technical errors present in the book, mainly punctuation. An opening or ending quotation mark missing and a missing period. Told through the eyes of both Tourth and Wren, the POV changes are handled in a clear and well-devised manner. I particularly liked how we avoided rehashing exactly what one character just told us even when they are narrating their perspective on the same event.

The main detraction on the technical side was how the long prayers were not italicized or otherwise differentiated from the first person narration. I was confused a few times when this happened because I didn’t immediately realize the tone had switched from narration to prayer. It would have been easier due to the first person narration to have the prayers italicized like their thoughts were or to have some other means of clearly delineating that this is not part of the regular narration.

Final Grade – A- or 4.7 stars

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I look forward to reading more of this series (note: This is apparently a multi-author series). The plot moves forward at a steady pace and paints an interesting picture of the medieval-esque fantasy world that makes me want to explore more. I recommend this book for Christians looking for a relatively clean Christian fantasy and enjoy medieval-esque fantasies. Recommended for ages 16 and up.

Wren is an intriguing story of a women bounty hunter with serious skills. She can totally take care of herself and others she cares for. I would want her as my friend. Wren comes upon Tourth by word of mouth. You see Wren wants a place to settle for the upcoming winter months. That is where Tourth comes in. He is in need of her hunting skills. So, they make a trade hunting and help for room and board. Then we are introduced to Kat, Svhen, Arthus and Dardon a wonderful supporting cast. Tourth has a past that is haunting him. Wren speaks her mind and that rubs Tourth the wrong way. Now the Enforcer is taxing everyone and building up his army. Now, this story had everything danger, murder, broken trust, secrets, treason. Along with friendship, loyalty, sweet romance and the element of surprise! I was entrapped in what would happen next. One of my favorite parts is Wren is climbing the tree in a dress and after had to get information on what a soldier wanted and Arthus said she couldn’t go because she could not act like a lady. It just made me laugh as she changed her whole domineer and became a lady before his eyes. Some great dialogue as well in this read. I would recommend you pick it up for yourself. I sure hope Ms. Rossano writes Adien and Krystalyn’s story. It would be fun to know what one of Wren’s brothers were up to.

JUST FYI- This story contains NO swearing or sexual situations!

Wren, Is my second book by author Rachel Rossano. Wren is the type of Young Adult book I am happy to recommend. The story captures you within the first few chapters. Wren is a strong, independent young woman that you want to see get a happy ending. I found it very interesting that she was a well known bounty hunter and she could handle the hawks. She meets Tourth and asks to stay with them to have shelter. She ends up helping him deal with his issues from the war. The author does a great job of helping the reader visualize the scenes. It was a great story of friendships, forgiveness, and a sprinkling of romance set against a battle with the enforcer. I believe each of Wren’s siblings have their own book and they are by different authors. Several of the secondary characters were interesting enough to have their own book. I loved the book cover. I feel that is accurately portrays Wren.

Wren Romany is forced to leave home and make her own way in the world. She is a highly skilled hunter of both animals and men, but faces a hard winter. She doesn't want to spend it camping out along the road and living hand-to-mouth, so she offers her services to Tourth Mynth, lord of a ruined fortress. Mynth is laying low, while trying to help his people. He does his best to stay out of the sights of the valley's evil "Enforcer," but will have to make a choice that is very risky.

When I started the book, the first couple of chapters confused me, because they were both told from the first person point-of-view, though they seemed to be different characters. That's when I realized the name that headed each chapter was the person speaking, which means the whole book is written from the first person POV of someone. When I went back and re-read the chapters, the information made sense.

The story was entertaining and the characters were both believable and likable. I'm interested to read more from this author.

With her parents dead and her eight siblings scattered, Wren Romany lives the hard life of a bounty hunter, roaming from one place to another with her horse and her falcons. As winter descends, Wren bargains with Tourth Mynth, a dispossessed nobleman living in hiding, for shelter in return for her hunting skills. As the king's local enforcer oppresses the local peasants and the net begins to close around Tourth, Wren tries to persuade him to take up his father's mantle and protect his people. But Tourth has had enough of battle. With Wren's help, could he be the leader his people need?

Wren is solidly well-written, deep, and realistic, with just enough amusement to lighten the dark, dangerous world in which the characters live. The story takes place in the midst of dark, medieval times, ruled by questionable and evil men (sort of like today's culture), and Rachel Rossano does a great job of intertwining darkness and light throughout the story. She proves that swearing and gore can be left to the imagination, rather than described in vivid detail, without taking anything away from the amazing scenes that Wren and Tourth struggle through. The sweet romance is perfect, building slowly until the characters, having gone through good times and bad together, realize they are perfect for each other. In my opinion, that's the way love should be.
