Sarah Joseph (Malayalam: സാറ ജോസഫ്) (born 1946) is a novelist and short story writer in Malayalam. She won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel Aalahayude Penmakkal (Daughters of God the Father). She also received the Vayalar Award for the same novel. Sarah has been at the forefront of the feminist movement in Kerala and is the founder of Manushi – organisation of thinking women. She along with Madhavikutty (Kamala Surayya) is considered leading women storytellers in Malayalam

This book is a satirical coming-of-age story(Bildungsroman); of an under-average village girl who struggles between her individuality and insecurities. Though intended as a companion for ‘Alahayude Penmakkal’, the novel stands alone, and manages to put a pertaining smile on readers, with its Thrissur slang filled raw humour.

Sara Joseph’s writing felt similar to that of Bashir(I might be wrong here, though not colossaly), in evoking familiarity of the spoken language and managing laughs off everyday conversations. She satirically ridicules societal oxymorons, through the eyes of a girl, from her school days to college days and relationship with her guardian. Narrative gave the vibe of ‘Lucy’ being an unwanted child, raised by her Aunt ‘Brijitha’. Lucy posses an awkward outsider view on the society, and though within highly subsidized limits, Brijitha is a mother like figure for her whom she admires and love more than anything. Through various phases of her life, and the very few people she gets to interact or even befriend with, Author takes readers through various issues in society, often ridiculing and hiding the deplorable situations with laughter.

Lucy is always under the shadow of Brijitha and anything close to modernity is alien to her, and she is raised to surrender her individuality under the rubric of ‘Malayala Manka’, which author later vandalize to ‘Malyala Monkey’ for laughs. It was hilarious learning about her high-school crush- Sethu, who later got transformed to a ganja smoking water allergic hippie. Even when Sethu roamed around high asking meaning of universe to poor old villagers, Lucy cherished her love for him. There is this particular scene in the book, where Lucy on getting her first period is forced to read about St. Maria Goretti, an Italian virgin-martyr of Catholic Church. She immediately identifies herself with the boyfriend’s perspective and struggles to understand the sacrifice. The narrative is filled with instances like this, and provide a critique on the societal notion of woman being a liability (along with many other things), unless they are ‘owned’ by someone.

What I have learned from my limited reading in Malayalam is that, the language and literature tradition has an innate tendency to glorify tragedy; and this book is a very delightful exception. It embraces the same with bright colours and laughters.

ഒരു തനി തൃശൂർ ലൈനിൽ ജാതി അലക്ക അലകിയെകനെ ഈ നോവൽ . സംഭവം പോളിച്ചുട്ടാ . ആദ്യമായി ഫുൾ തൃശൂർ ശൈലിയിൽ വായിച്ചാ ആദ്യത്തെ നോവൽ ആണ് മാറ്റത്തി . എന്റെ വേരുകൾ കിടക്കുന്നത് അങ്ങ് ചീരചിയിലും ഒല്ലുരും കുരിയച്ചിറ എന്നാ ഇടങ്ങളിൽ ആയതു കൊണ്ടും കഥ പശ്ചാത്തലം കടന് പോകുന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം ഞാൻ പിച്ചവെച്ചു നടന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ ആയതിനാലും ഈ നോവല ഇങ്ക് വല്ലാത്ത ഒരു വായന മുഹോര്തം സമ്മാനിച്ചു . ജനിച്ച നാടിൻറെ ഭാഷ അതിന്റെ ശൈലിയോട് കൂടെ സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോൾ അത് കുറച്ചിലാണ് എന്ന് പറയുന്ന കുറെ ആളുകള ഉണ്ട്, ഈ നോവൽ വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ തോന്നും "എന്തുട്ര ഗടിയെ മ്ടെ ഭാഷക്ക് ഒരു കുഴപ്പം , ആ ജാതി അലക്ക അലകിയെകനെ ലൂസ്സിയും ബ്രിജിതയും"

“ഒക്ടോബറിലെ വൈകുന്നേരങ്ങൾ ലൂസിയെ ഒരേസമയം സന്തോഷിപ്പിക്കുകയും സങ്കടപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഉച്ചതിരിഞ്ഞാൽ എന്നും മഴയാണ്. മുരിങ്ങമരങ്ങളുടെ അപ്പുറത്ത് ആകാശം അടിയിൽ നിന്ന് കറുത്ത് കേറും. മഴയുടെ മുന്നറിയിപ്പായി ലൂസി അത്താഴം പാകപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോഴേ ഇടികുടുക്കങ്ങൾ കേട്ടുതുടങ്ങും. ചിലപ്പോൾ മഴക്കാറിന് മീതെകൂടി കടുംമഞ്ഞ നിറമുള്ള വെളിച്ചം ഇറങ്ങിവന്ന് ഭൂമിയെ പൊതിയുന്നത് ചുട്ടഴികൾക്കുള്ളിലൂടെ ലൂസി അന്തംവിട്ട് നോക്കി നിൽക്കും. അവൾക്ക് കരച്ചിൽ വരും. ചിലപ്പോൾ നേരത്തേയെത്തുന്ന ഇരുട്ടിൽ മിന്നൽപിണരുകൾ പുളഞ്ഞു താഴേക്കുവരും. അപ്പോഴും ലൂസിക്ക് കരച്ചിൽ വരും. എപ്പോഴും എന്തെന്നില്ലാത്ത സന്തോഷത്തോടെ സങ്കടകരമായ ചെറുക്കാറ്റു വീശിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കും.”

ഇതുവരെ സാറാ ജോസഫിന്റെ ഒരു നോവലും വായിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ആദ്യമായി വായിച്ചതാണ് മാറ്റാത്തി. അലാഹയുടെ പെണ്മക്കളുടെ മറുപാതിയാണ് എന്ന് ആമുഖത്തിൽ വായിച്ചിരുന്നു. വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ശൈലിയും എഴുത്തും. തൃശൂർ ഭാഷയുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്കളങ്കമായ ശൈലി ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ഒരു മുതൽക്കൂട്ടാണ്. ഗ്രാമീണത തുളുമ്പി നിൽക്കുന്ന കഥാ പശ്ചാത്തലം. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഒഴുക്കിൽ എന്നും വിഴുപ്പലക്കി ജീവിതം കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന ചെറോണയുടെ പിൻഗാമിയെന്നപോലെ ലൂസി കഥാവസാനം മാറുമ്പോൾ നേരിയ ഒരു വിഷാദം ഉടലെടുക്കുന്നു. ചിലപ്പോഴൊക്കെ ഇത് ബ്രിജിത്തയുടെ ജീവിതകഥയാണെന്നും തോന്നാം. എന്തായാലും നല്ലൊരു ശ്രമം.

വെളിച്ചം വീഴാത്ത ഇടനാഴികളിൽ ജീവിതങ്ങൾ ദുസഹമാക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിന്റെ നേർക്കാഴ്ചയാണ് "മാറ്റാത്തി". ഇത് ലൂസിയുടെ കഥയാണ് . തന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം പോലും അദൃശ്യമാക്കി തീർക്കുന്നവരുടെ ലോകത്തിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്ന ലൂസിയുടെ കഥ. ബന്ധങ്ങൾ ബന്ധനമാകുന്നിടത്ത് വ്യത്യസ്തയാവുകയാണ് ലൂസി. ആ ബന്ധനമില്ലെങ്കിൽ താനീലോകത്ത് ആരുമല്ല എന്നൊരു ഭയം കുഞ്ഞുനാൾ മുതൽ അവളിലുണ്ട്. ബ്രിജിത്തയുടെ കാൽകീഴിൽ ആയിരുന്നു ലൂസിയുടെ ലോകം. എന്നാൽ ഒരു അടിമയ്ക്ക് തന്റെ യജമാനനോട് തോന്നുന്ന വിധേയത്വത്തേക്കാൾ നിർമലമായ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ ഉറവ ലൂസിയിൽ കാണാം. ഒരു പെരുന്നാളിനുള്ള ആൾക്കൂട്ടം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിലൊരു നിഴൽ പോലും ആകാൻ കഴിയാത്തവൾ ഏതുനിമിഷവും അരക്ഷിതമാകാൻ പോകുന്ന തന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെ നേരിടുകയാണ്.

"ആലാഹയുടെ പെൺമക്കൾ" ആയിരുന്നു സാറാ ജോസഫ് കൃതികളിൽ എന്റെ ആദ്യ വായന. "ആലാഹയുടെ പെൺമക്കൾ" എന്ന നോവലിന്റെ മറുപാതിയാണ് "മാറ്റാത്തി" എന്നറിയുന്നതും ഈ നോവൽ എന്റെ കൈകളിൽ എത്തുന്നതും ഏകദേശം ഒരേ സമയത്താണ്. വായനയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം വീണ്ടും വായിക്കണം എന്നൊരാഗ്രഹം ബാക്കി നിൽക്കുന്നു.

Maybe the first feminist novel I have read in Malayalam, and it is the first time I am reading Sarah Joseph. Though I like the characterization of Loussie, Brigitta and all, I didn't something, I don't know what, in the novel. Maybe the complete injustice faced by Loussie. Though Brigitta, the old lady, abused and beat Loussie throughout the novel, the last scene is an indication that Brigitta really loved Loussie very much. Then, it is quite natural to imagine a chance of her giving something to Loussie in her will before her death....

ലൂസി എന്ന പെൺകുട്ടിയുടെ കഥ പറയുന്ന നോവൽ. വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ എവിടെയൊക്കെയോ ഒരു നൊമ്പരം. ബ്രിജിത്ത എന്ന അമ്മയുടെ സഹോദരിക്കൊപ്പമാണ് ലൂസി കഴിയുന്നത്. ഒരു വേലക്കാരി എന്നപോലെയാണ് അവളെ ബ്രിജിത നോക്കി കാണുന്നത്. എന്നിട്ടുപോലും ലൂസി അവളെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു. ബ്രിജിതയുടെ വാർദ്ധക്യം വളരെ നല്ല രീതിയിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അവസാന നിമിഷം ബ്രിജിത ലൂസിയുടെ സ്നേഹം മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നത് വളരെ ചെറിയ വരികളിൽ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അത് എല്ലാവരുടെയും കണ്ണുകൾ ഈറനണിയുന്നു. ലൂസിക്ക് സേതുവിനോടുള്ള ഇഷ്ടവും ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ വന്നു പോകുന്ന ചൊറോണ എന്ന അലക്കുകാരിയും ഇതിലുണ്ട്. പാപ്പാനഗർ എന്ന പദ്ധതിയാണ് കേരളത്തിൽ ലക്ഷം വീട് കോളനി തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത് എന്നും ഇതിൽ പറയുന്നു. ലൂസിയുടെ നല്ല ഭാവി ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് ഒരു നൊമ്പരം തന്നെയാണ് ഈ കഥയുടെ പര്യവസാനം.

2008 ലാണ് ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായി മാറ്റാത്തി വായിക്കുന്നത്.ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ പുറംചട്ടയിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട് "ആലാഹയുടെ പെൺമക്കളുടെ" മറുപാതിയാണ് ഈ നോവൽ എന്ന്. ആ സമയത്തു ഞാൻ ഈ പറയുന്ന നോവൽ വായിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. വർഷങ്ങൾക്കിപ്പുറം തൃശ്ശൂരിന്റെ കഥപറയുന്ന ഈ രണ്ടു നോവലുകളും ഒരുമിച്ചു വായിച്ചു.ലൂസിയുടെ കഥ പറയുന്ന "മാറ്റാത്തി"എന്തുകൊണ്ടോ ഇത്തിരി ഇഷ്ട കൂടുതൽ ഉണ്ട്.

വെച്ചും വിളമ്പിയും തൻ പരിചരിക്കുന്ന ഇളയമ്മയിൽ നിന്നും സ്നേഹത്തിത്തിന്റെ കരുതൽ അവൾ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ അവരിൽനിന്നു സ്നേഹത്തോടെ ഒരു വാക്കോ ചേർത്ത് പിടിക്കലോ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല
എല്ലാരുടെമുൻപിലും തന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തിന്റെ വാതിൽ കൊട്ടിയടച്ചു അവനവനെ മാത്രമേ സ്നേഹിക്കാനായിരുന്നു അവർക്കിഷ്ടം.വല്ലപോഴെങ്കിലും ഓടിയെത്തുന്ന ചെറോണയിൽ നിന്ന് മാത്രമാണ് ലൂസിക്ക് അല്പമെങ്കിലും കരുതൽ അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നത്. ഇളയമ്മ ഇല്ലാതായാൽ തന്റെ മുൻപിലുള്ള ലോകം ശൂന്യ മാണെന്ന് കുഞ്ഞുനാളിലെ മുതൽ അറിയാവുന്നതു കൊണ്ടുതന്നെയാകും ,നൂറു ബന്ധുക്കളുടെ നടുവിൽ അവൾ ഇരുട്ടിൽ തപ്പിയതും.
ആഴത്തിലുള്ള ചിന്തകളിലേക്കും,ഭാവനയിലേക്കും കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന ഭാവന സൃഷ്ടി തന്നെയാണ് "മാറ്റാത്തി "

അവതരണ ശൈലി കൊണ്ട് വായനക്കാരനെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്ന മാറ്റാത്തി ഹൃദയമായ ഒരു വായനനുഭവമാണ് സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നത്. ലൂസി എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തിനോട് തോന്നുന്ന അനുകമ്ബയും സ്നേഹവുമാണ് കഥയിലൂടനീളം നമ്മളെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു ഘടകം.

A wonderful read.
ഇത് ലൂസിയുടെ കഥ, ബ്രിജിത്തയുടെ ജീവിതം, ചെറോണയുടെ വികാരം. പല സ്ത്രീസങ്കല്പങ്ങളെ കഥാപതെരങ്ങളായി നിറച്, അവയ്ക്കു ജീവൻ കൊടുത്ത ഒരു പെണ്ണെഴുത്.
