In the desert, water becomes the central concern of life. When fetching that water becomes an excruciating ordeal both emotionally and spiritually, one woman wrestles with the decisions and events that have defined her existence. Obscure, ashamed and marginalized, everything changes one dusty afternoon when she meets a man beside a well.
This is neither her story, nor his, but merely the moment when their stories collide. Based of the Biblical text of John, chapter four, this fictional retelling of the woman at the well transplants a timeless encounter with Jesus the Christ into contemporary hearts and minds without abandoning its historical and contextual roots.
Water is an INCARNATIONAL SHORT meant to be read as an inspirational stand-alone story or together with Scripture as a conversation starter and study aid.
Other INCARNATIONAL SHORTS include: Light: John 7 Stone: John 8 Blood: John 9
Raised in Central Texas, David Mark Brown learned to ride horses at a young age. Then learned to hate them after a disastrous attempt to impress a girlfriend. He was five.
Turning instead to a life of poetry and prose he eventually migrated north to the University of Montana (the Berkeley of the Rockies) and became the Redneck Granola.
Falling in love a chainsaw wielding mountain woman forced him to reconsider his chosen career path--Hemingway on a sailboat. Instead he illuminated the path of life to college students as a spiritual guide for over a dozen years while his wife (now a pharmacist) squirreled away enough acorns for David to embrace the sultry world of commercial fiction.
After legally snatching a little Vietnamese boy and creating another son via more natural means, the happy family settled in Idaho. David still rides horses, but only in black and never for fun.
First off, I'm the author. If you're familiar with my work, this may seem a divergence from things like Paraplegic Zombie Slayer and Reefer Ranger. I suppose it is. Stated most simply, I'm a Christian who writes, but not a Christian writer. Not wanting to limit my material or my readers to people of my personal faith, I intentionally waited a season before venturing back into writing spiritual/Christian content.
Having said that, I love this simple little story. I love that Jesus the Christ sought out the least, last, lost and loser while he walked the earth. Each INCARNATIONAL SHORTS will highlight a different one of these losers. My own experiences demanded that I start here, with the woman at the well.
I hope you read the story, enjoy it and discuss it with a friend.
