The couple: Duncan and Laken

Romance genre: bdsm
Series: Haven, Texas
Length: 200 pages

Plot: Laken is back in Haven, and so is her former lover, Duncan. He was the person who introduced her to bdsm, and he was the person she thought she loved. But he wasn't there for her when she needed him and she has to concentrate on being happy and healthy for herself. Duncan is determined to get her back, though, but he doesn't know everything that happened before they broke up. Not only that, but there's a subplot about a crazed stalker/kidnapper/torturer/killer who might be after Laken.

Character development: I thought it was strange that Laken had all these people she was really close to, but the only people she told about her attack besides the police were a therapist and her boss. But I've never suffered a trauma like that, so maybe it's a typical reaction. I'll tell you though, I did not like Duncan. At all. I feel like he eventually understood the enormity of what happened to Laken back then and the way she reacted, so that's fine, but in general, I did not like his personality.

Next book in the series: Saving Savannah

Somehow every story in Haven,Texas makes me want to stay a little longer.
Life is good there, the men are all strong and firm, the women resilient and feisty.
They all have that special dynamic, that extra spice in their relationships.

Laken and Duncan used to have that dynamic when they were younger.
But somewhere, something went wrong, and we get to see,bit by bit, what exactly.
Duncan came back to Haven,Laken stayed in New York.

Three years later, she’s back in Haven, but she’s not the girl he used to know anymore...
But he knows the girl she is now,is still the girl he wants.
And this time he won’t give up!
Getting her to open up is hard, but she’s worth it.
And once he decides to take the reigns,to make her submit to his dominant needs, they both find there’s still magic between them.

Only, one of the reasons she told him they were over three years ago is coming to haunt them....
And it’s not that whining ex she left behind in New York.
No,it’s much worse....

This was a second chance romance combined with a splash of danger.
It kept me interested until the last page, and i really enjoyed it.

4.3 stars.

I’m thankful it had been a while since I read this the first time, because I totally forgot who the bad was and it was just as much of a surprise as it was the first time. So that made this extra exciting.

This was so good.
Definitely check TWs, because Laken went through something very traumatic, and though we don’t get any on page flashbacks or anything like that, it’s still talked about and certain things pop up in her thoughts throughout.

I really enjoyed watching Laken begin to heal and grow and move past her fear with Duncan at her side. It was really sort of beautiful.

The kink isn’t hard core, some power exchange, some bondage, some punishments, and of course some time in Saxon’s BDSM club. This author writes anything having to do with kink or mental health so freaking well, it’s always a pleasure when she includes some of that in her books.

Can’t wait to reread the rest of the series in time for the new book to come out in a month or two.

He’s taking care of everything

Duncan has a lot to be forgiven for. At least that’s how he sees it. His beautiful girlfriend, Laken, disappeared from his life without a word. He had no idea what happened or why she was gone. He finally decided she was pouting about their missing date and was licking her wounds. She was gone.
But really, Laken was in hell. Attacked and almost losing her life she fought back one step at a time until she could almost live again. The nightmares continued, sleeplessness became her companion and loneliness settled in.
Then She moved home and Duncan came back.
Now her attacker knows where she lives and he’s not done with her. Time to fight back.

Great book. Very different from Lila’s story but really good!

Laken and Duncan had been together as Dom and Sub for awhile but after missing one dinner date, Laken gets upset and leaves. What follows is hell for her and when she comes back home, she is a completely different woman. Duncan was miserable without her but figured she was a spoiled woman. Neither ever forgot each other. Both did a lot of things that cause their relationship to go to the wayside but admitting to those faults is harder for them. When he finds out exactly why she left and what happened, he goes through a range of emotions but finally figures out he's getting her back. But wait.................someone is coming for her again. Someone who wants to cleanse her of her "sins". The emotions in this story are so real, you can feel them pouring off the pages as you read. Very well written and I would highly recommend this book!!! Just have some tissues ready!

Enjoyable book. I do wish there had been more substance to the story. I'm not saying that as I'm a prude. I am not. The smexy times were great. I just found myself wanting to dive deeper into Laken and Duncan's relationship and her learning to trust again.

Like the author not the story

2.5 stars. If it was a different author I would have put it at 3 stars. I just know she can do better. I would have preferred more informed consent and communication

"Laken’s Surrender," the second book in Laylah Roberts' Haven Texas series, is a powerful and emotional exploration of love, trust, and healing within the unique dynamics of BDSM relationships. Set in the intriguing town of Haven, where unconventional relationships are the norm, this story delves deep into the lives of Laken and Duncan, two characters with a complicated past and an undeniable connection.

The book opens with Laken struggling to come to terms with her submissive side, a part of herself she has been rejecting due to a traumatic experience. Three years prior, Laken was kidnapped and tortured in a hate crime because of her involvement in BDSM. This harrowing experience left her scarred, both physically and emotionally, leading her to push away Duncan, the man she once loved. The complexity of her trauma is handled with sensitivity, making her journey toward healing both compelling and relatable.

Duncan, the determined Dom and deputy sheriff, is relentless in his pursuit to win Laken back. His character embodies the protective and overprotective nature common among the men of Haven, yet his approach is layered with patience and understanding. While some might find his initial intensity overwhelming, it's essential to recognize that Duncan's actions stem from a deep love and an urgent need to protect Laken, not just from external threats but from her own fears.

One of the most poignant themes in the book is the importance of trust in BDSM relationships. Critics who label the story as problematic or worse fail to grasp the dynamics of consensual BDSM. In this lifestyle, the power exchange is always underpinned by mutual trust and respect. Safe words are a crucial aspect, ensuring that all parties can stop any activity at any time. Although the concept of a safe word isn't heavily emphasized in the earlier books, it's clear that the author is building a world where such nuances will likely become more prominent as the series progresses.

"Laken’s Surrender" is not just a romance but a tale of personal growth and the reclamation of one's identity. Laken's journey is about learning to trust again—both in herself and in Duncan. The plot weaves together suspense, as a murderer lurks in the shadows, with a tender love story that highlights the strength of the human spirit in overcoming past traumas.

Overall, this book is a testament to the power of love and trust within the BDSM community, offering readers a glimpse into a world where relationships are built on a foundation of respect, understanding, and care. Despite some repetitive sections, the story remains engaging, and the character development is compelling, making "Laken’s Surrender" a worthwhile read for fans of the series and newcomers alike.

Not very well written about trauma, and quite a few mistakes.

In the first book we met Laken who seemed angry with men, especially Doms. Three years previously Laken and Duncan had a serious relationship, and he was her dom. After something really traumatic and horrific happens to her she finishes with Duncan, and moves away. When she later moves back to Haven Duncan is determined to be with her again. This is where it started going wrong for me. Laken has obvious trauma and something has obviously happened to her but Duncan doesn’t try to find out what it is, or help her as she’s obviously terrified of bdsm. He just wants her in his life and doesn’t want to lose her. If he loved her as much as he says he does, he would of wanted to help her and find out what happened. I’m not saying what happened to her was Duncan’s fault, as it obviously isn’t, but he treat Laken like a doormat when they were together previously. Letting her down all the time, not letting her know he loved her. How hard is it to just phone someone and let them know you can’t make it a fantastic meal they’ve cooked for you?

When his FBI brothers come to town to find a serial killer that tortures women who go to bdsm clubs. Duncan still doesn’t add it together with Laken. 🙄 Seriously how does he not put two and two together??? Anyway moving on, with a few words of encouragement Laken is perfectly fine with being whipped again. 😭😡 If you’re going to write about trauma do it properly! There’s no way she would ever be comfortable enough to do it ever again.

As the tension sort of ramped up, (A tiny bit maybe.) and they’re all terrified about a serial killer, it’s suddenly over. Erm…. What just happened?? Apart from being a major disappointment, it didn’t even make sense why the killer did that!! 😡😡

There were a lot of mistakes in this one. The killer is tall and muscular but later on he’s small, Laken has a lot of scars that she uses a miracle cream on and they’re all pretty much invisible. Yeah whatever… There are creams that help with scars but they wouldn’t take Laken’s away! Laken has scars on her back that are never mentioned about again, did they just disappear as well? All the way through the book it says about Laken being really skint. She literally has no money. Why? She lost her job in New York, but it was a really well paid, so what happened to her money? Did she try to get another job? Why did they keep her security deposit at her apartment? She opens a clothes shop with her clothes that she made but she never seems to have any customers. She never seems to make any clothes to sell, and she was accused of stealing the designs so how can she then sell them?

Then there’s their relationship’ which I never believed in. Duncan has to be told how to handle Laken. I think she would have been better with Saxon who owns the bdsm club!

There are parts that were enjoyable but way too many issues with it spoilt it.

I should have DNF but, no, I kept reading it.

Very simple story. One dimensional characters. Duncan is clueless about what happened to her, even when his FBI brothers show up to hunt a serial killer of subs, or when Layla tells him what happened to her. He apparently doesn't even wonder about her scars. Then they want to use her as bait to catch the killer. Groan; find a better plot! But I dropped to 1 star when the FBI STILL does nothing about her ex Ricky who keeps showing up.

When she finally tells him she wants him to dominate her, he apparently leaves because the next chapter begins with him driving back to her place. He leaves her AGAIN when they finally get started! Is this supposed to build tension? I would be more PO than she is.

Once she agrees to be bait, Duncan takes over to teach her how to be a sub again. Which means, lots of sex in every chapter from 60% on. I skipped those.

There are a few silly mistakes; wrong words used. The guy on the cover looks like he's 18; certainly not an ex-football player.

There are some good BDSM writers (Erika Wilde for one), but sadly this isn't one of them.

Laken has always loved Duncan Jones. But their relationship disintegrated years ago, and she's a different woman now. There’s no going back, no matter how attracted she might be to the gorgeous deputy sheriff. Duncan is determined to break through barriers Laken has erected between them and win her back. He knows he made mistakes in the past, they both did. But she was his once, and she'll be his again. But Laken’s secrets threaten not only their relationship but her very life.

WHEW! What a backstory for this one. Slight spoilers. Laken is shook up and afraid to go back to the BDSM lifestyle after being kidnapped and tortured by a psycho for three days. Unfortunately, Duncan couldn’t save the day back then, so involved in his career. But don’t be fooled. This man comes back hunkier than ever and he’s ready to win sweet Laken back. There’s a lot of good emotional build up here and a lot of “second chances” themes that I really enjoyed. I always find characters who go through a healing process make me believe the chemistry even more. Yummy all around!

Unfortunately this was a no-go for me. I wanted to like this book, but I really did not like Duncan, and it's hard to enjoy a romance when you dislike the main male lead.

I will admit that I disliked him from the beginning, but I did look forward to reading him develop or change and seeing where his character went. But I did not feel as if he did change all that much. He held a sense of entitlement to the heroine that bothered me especially after his previous actions towards her. Maybe it's just me but I do not think he handled the situation with the heroine well and I did not think he repented enough for his past and current actions towards her.

Laken and Duncan

Laken and Duncan were given a second chance at love, and I’m so glad they took it. Their story was emotional, filled with heartbreak, healing, and the kind of love that withstands even the worst of circumstances.

While Duncan was out trying to secure the perfect future for himself and Laken, he unknowingly left her vulnerable, and something horrendous happened to her in his absence. Because of that, Laken became reluctant to trust again—not just Duncan, but anyone. Though I understood Duncan’s intentions and why he ultimately wasn’t there when she needed him most, I couldn’t help but feel angry on Laken’s behalf. At the same time, what happened to her wasn’t truly either of their faults—it was just a tragic, painful situation neither of them could have foreseen.

Despite the pain, I was rooting for this couple the entire time. The truth was, they were both hurting, and both deserved the kind of love that only the other could give. Their journey back to each other wasn’t easy, but it was worth every moment. This story was heartbreaking yet beautiful, and seeing them find their way back to love made for a deeply satisfying read.

Wonderful story!

I think that Laken has gone through heartbreak and horrible trauma, surviving but just barely. Being set up by a former boyfriend/ design partner in the fashion company she worked for. Losing everything, and coming home to Haven, and starting her own dress making shop, with the help of her Fathers. Learning that Duncan, her former lover/Dom has her stressed and worried. She fears getting back into the BDSM world again, but she always felt safe and loved with Duncan as her Dom. His constant pursuit to get her back, has him hurt, and confused by her attitude, almost like she feared.it, but he knows she doesn't want to feel like that. A horror from her past comes back, and she has to face her fears head on. Very moving, and intense fearful scene towards the end. They do get their HEA ending though. Trish. A.

Page turner

WOW!! Loved the story and was captivated from the first page to the very end; I couldn't put the book down. A love story between Dunvan wanting a second chance and Larken surrounded by walls to keep him out and her secrets safe. Secrets that hold the key to 7 brutal murders and will have HIM come for the one that got away. This is a story of courage, trust. Love, loyalty, healing, freedom and second chances. It is full of action, mystery, twists and turns you don't see coming, forgiveness and a deep joy. I found it so beautifully written and can't wait to read the next story.

BDSM romance

Potential Plot spoilers alert
There are some big potential triggers throughout the book relating to kidnap and physical abuse, some of it sexual in nature.
I have to say that I am seriously annoyed by the use of abuse as a vehicle for a plotline.
I find it utterly distasteful.
It's also overworked with far too many authors relying on the angle to move a plotline forward.
I also thought the use of orgasm denial a bit overworked too.
The characterisation isn't the strongest, I wasn't able to gain a connection with either lead characters.
There are some BDSM themed sex scenes and some swearing.
If you are a fan of the genre you would probably enjoy the book.

DNF at 61%
I had previously started this book a long time ago and laid it down after the halfway mark (same as with the 1st and 4th one). Now I am giving this series the third (?, maybe more) try.
As you can see I gave up after 61% and after being happy with my reader experience with the 3rd book I am glad that I did. The last 40% contain really heavy topics relating to kidnapping and torture of a side character (the 3rd books main character).
I enjoy Laylah Roberts writing so much, but this series is the end boss for me due to the heavy themes and that not every book starts with the main characters just getting to know each other.

This book focuses on a second chance romance. Duncan and Laken's past relationship that ended without Duncan understanding the reason.

Laken is holding on to a major secret. I had a vague idea about what her secret entailed. She was so angry, it was kind of difficult to like her character until more details about her secret were revealed and she became less angry and defensive.

Duncan and Laken's story contains some light BDSM, a little suspense, a description of some violence, and a stalker. There is also romance, some sexy scenes, and an HEA.

Excellent writing

I’m really loving reading this series, the writing is excellent. An engaging plot; good character development with just the right emphasis on the main characters while giving intriguing glimpses into secondary ones; the suspense aspect was deftly used to move the book along at a nice fast pace; hot, hot sex that enhances the story rather than taking it over. All in all a great experience.

A 2nd chance at forever

I'm a sucker for a second chance romance and this one was amazing.

The right amount of romance, kink, and drama/suspense to really keep a reader engaged and on their toes.

Laken was amazing...to go through all she did and get back up and take life by the b*lls. Yeah, she's who I aspire to be when I grow up ;)

Again plenty of characters introduced where I can see future books in the story and enough glimpses of characters we already met.

What a beautiful story

Everyone of us has secrets we do not want to share.
But to be kidnapped and tortured is too much of a burden to keep quiet about.
Laken had been tortured , beaten and cut up. It took everything she had to survive everyday.
She lost her job and her apartment and had to move back home with her Dad’s.
And her old love Duncan.
Duncan will be her hero.
It has a HEA.
Loved it.

hmm....

I started this book weeks ago and lost interest. I then tried to come back to it recently and just couldn't get back into it.

While I thought the hero was pretty good, I felt that the heroine could have gotten to the point sooner. This story seemed to have dragged out.

I was just wanting to get to the point already.

Wow! Super emotional and kind of gut wrenching. Laken went through so much and it took a tremendous toll on her and on Duncan. The love that they share is beautiful and honestly, relationship goals. The whole dom/sub relationship requires so much trust and communication that it’s quite inspiring. I totally enjoyed this story and I’m anxious to continue with Savannah’s story.

This book has it all, a young woman with a traumatized past. Duncan is the deputy sheriff that Laken has always had feelings for her whole life. But their relationship fell apart years ago and she knows that you can’t go back. But Duncan isn’t convinced, he wants her back. It also has a protagonist and twist plot. The characters are sweet and the plot smoothly written.

Duncan and Laken

Another good story by Laylah Roberts. Duncan and Laken had a chance in NYC but it fell flat. Too young, too centered on their own futures. When Laken comes back to Haven she has a hard time opening up to anyone.
The story unfolds from there. If you like Dom/sub scenarios then you will like this!

Good, needs trigger warnings

I didn’t see any trigger warnings so I’m telling you now, this book features: stalking, off screen abduction and prolonged abuse, there are also off screen rape. None of it besides the stalking occurs in real time but know that it’s there if these are your triggers.

Laken and Duncan

This is a very good, well written, D/s romance. There are triggers, so be warned. Laken and Duncan grew up in the same town then meet again in NY. Lake is attacked and moves to a new apartment. Laken can’t find her and doesn’t know what happened. He returns to their hometown. Read to find out what happens when she returns. There is a mystery and lots of passion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I do all of Laylah Roberts' books but this one especially. She really portrayed BDSM in a way that teaches just how much deeper it goes than simply "tie me up and spank me". The connection between BDSM and trauma healing is something not a lot of people talk about or understand and I think LR nailed it. Beautifully done.
