Büyük bir iddiası olmayan, basit bir hikayeyi yine sade ve düz bir üslupla anlayan kitapları çok seviyorum. Çocuk kitaplarına benzer bir üslup.
Elinizde bir hikaye vardır; bunu en basit, en yalın, en "yetişkin insan" dünyasından uzak şekilde anlatmanız gerekir. Gregory Panaccione bu kitapta tam olarak bunu yapıyor.
Finalinde, başında, sonunda "vay be" diyebileceğimiz tek bir an bile yok. Ama kitabı okuduğunuz her an yüzünüzde bir gülümsemeyle Toby efendinin yanaklarını sıkıp, döve döve sevmek isterken buluyorsunuz kendinizi. Gregory abimiz bu hikayede Toby efendiyi insanlaştırmıyor. La fontaine masallarına benzemiyor. Yani bu kitap bir fabl değil. Bizzat yazar/çizer bir köpek gibi düşünüyor ve bunu yaşıyor. Bize de sadece şahit olmak düşüyor. Zaten Toby'i kullandığı farklı bir kitabının önsözünde (Evet Toby karakteri ekseriyetle kitaplarında yer alıyor.) "Belki de biraz köpek gibi hissetmesi gereken biziz." diyor Gregory abimiz.

Her ne kadar son yıllarda popüler kültür sayesinde bir miktar ikrah etsem de Oğuz Atay'ın "Kelimeler albayım bazı anlamlara gelmiyor." sözünü çok severim. Bu kitapta tam olarak bu sözü hissedenleri yakalayacak cinsten. Son yıllarda bir çok yayınevi tarafından diyalog içermeyen çizgi hikayelerin sıklıkla basılması da ayrı bi keyif :)

This was freaking gorgeous. It's told entirely with images - no words or dialog - and tells the story of Toby, a fantastic puppy with such expressively drawn expressions you can tell that Panaccione has studied dogs and—though I may be projecting—obviously has a lot of love for dog-kind.

The tale is deceptively simple at first: a dog who loves his human (an artist), their days together, and the intrusion into their wonderful life by that most wretched of creatures: a cat.

But things rarely stay as simple as they appear on the surface. Maybe the human isn't as happy as he seems, maybe the cat isn't an intruder, and maybe there are better ways to get in touch with your inner wolf than chasing sticks.

(Well. Maybe not that last one.)

Highly recommended.

İki buçuk yıldız.

Bana saman gibi geldi. Orijinal duran bir fikir ve anlatım, iyi sulu boya çizimler ama çok düz bir hikaye.

Sanatçı yetenekli. Bu vesile ile Panaccione takibime girdi. Bir süre işlerine bakacağım. Ama kitabın boyutları hayli küçük. Orijinal baskı da böyle mi acaba? Bana göre elle tutulur bir görselleri varken küçük olunca o da yetmiyor.

Hiç metin kullanmadan, hayvan perspektifinden bir hikaye anlatma fikri güzel ama uygulamada ne gülüyorum, ne hüzünleniyorum, ne zeka parıltısı yakalıyorum…

Totally charming, wordless, but not meaningless story from a dog's point of view. Gorgeous watercolours bring the French countryside into the room, with all it's delights and hazards for a friendly, loving little dog.

It's over in an instant, so I started reading it back to front, so that I could savour it more slowly.

I backed the Kickstarter for the graphic novel as I’ve got 3 dogs myself (one looks somewhat like Toby but is a girl) & found the idea of a story thru the eyes of the dog such a cute idea. This wordless graphic does a great job of conveying Toby’s thoughts as he views his owner (who loves his freedom as much as Toby), the country house/land that’s his domain & this dreaded enemy “the cat”.
There were moments that inspired a few chuckles in Toby’s antics while a few emotions as I related the story to my dogs looks of sadness when my girlfriend/myself have to leave the house without any of them.

It’s definitely worth reading & the art is able to convey easily the emotions needed to get the story told.

The style of the drawing is top notch, warm, full of life, easy to get attach to, and it`s clearly defining for the hand and inspiration of the author, Panaccione.

The story, like the previous book by him that I`ve read, isn`t something big, dense, or too complex, but it works, it has it`s moments, and if you`re a dog lover you`ll definitely be hooked to this one.

If it weren`t for one scene I think that this easily could have been very kid friendly, but there is some explicit scenes, so I can`t really recommend it to a kid under 14 years of age.

Köpeklerin ne kadar sevmediğim ve rahatsız edici özelliği varsa çok iyi tasvir edilmiş. Kapı çaldığındaki kendinden geçmeler ve kedilerin kuyruklarını ısırma içgüdüleri hele. Çarpıcan ağzına 2 tane… :D CATS ALL THE WAY! <3

Bu tam anlamıyla grafik bir roman.
Ressamımızın Toby adlı köpeğinin maceraları diyebiliriz. Onun sayesinde yazar arkadaşıda bir kediyi sahipleniyor kısacık ama keşke daha da fazla olsaydı dedirten bir hikayeye sahip.

My friend Toby is a graphic novel I received through a Kickstarter. If Toby lived in my place his name would be Oscar. Toby, through his adventures (most importantly chasing a cat), help his somewhat down on his luck owner find love. This is very cute, and some of the thought bubbles over Toby’s head are very funny. Loved the illustrations as well.

A wordless graphic novel about a dog and the cat he chases, leading his owner to find a tag on the cat. They then return the cat to the owner and the two humans end up falling in love and writing and illustrating a book together. A couple of the panels featuring Toby the dog made me laugh out loud.
