Finn - Love in Ink - Book 1 Spencer I was minding my own business when I ran into the sexiest tattooed god I’d ever seen. I’ve seen a ton, considering I own Dragonfly Books, which just so happens to be located next to Ink Me. You get the picture. While trying to find myself after the death of my mother Finn throws my world upside down. Will the makeup and lace be too much for him or will he walk with me through my own journey of self-love?
Finn Deciding to move from one side of the country to the other, was the only way I could quiet the ghosts haunting my memories. It was a Hail Mary attempt to save my life. When Spencer, the sweet, sexy bookstore owner from next door comes in and flips my world right side up, I’m thrown. How do I push through the grief that consumes me and let myself feel worthy of love? And how do I purchase stock in Manties?
***Finn is book 1 in the Love in Ink series. It’s a MM romance that is low angst, steamy with laughs and a very dramatic cat. There is a brief on page attempted assault, not between MC’s. And no worries, someone gets what’s coming to them.
Finn is book one in the Love In Ink series by Ruby Raynes. This is Ruby’s debut book which is so hard to imagine because she did a fantastic job. The characters are so lovable. The little town they live in sounds like somewhere I’d want to live. Except for the cold weather that is!
Spencer McCallum is nearly twenty four years old. Ever since the passing of his mother a few years before, Spencer has not only been running the book store his mother owned, Dragonfly Books, but he’s been attending college to get his business degree. He’s at the end of his final semester. Other than his two best friends, Jules and Alex, Spencer feels alone. He’s awkward and shy and due to his smaller size and his love of make up, he doesn’t feel accepted. His book shop borders a tattoo shop and even though the guys there have tried to be kind to him, they intimidate him. One other thing, Spencer is so accident prone. He can trip over air. Which brings us to the fun little way these two meet.
Finn Cartwright is twenty seven years old. His life in Los Angeles was anything but pleasant. He had to get out and his best friend sent him to Camden Bay, Maine to his friend’s tattoo shop. It’s a chance at a new life that he is determined to make work. It’s his only chance. Little did he know that it was also going to be a chance at something more, something wonderful, with a man that stole his breath away.
Both of these men were at a crossroads in their lives. Spencer finishing college, ready to take the book store to a new level. And Finn starting over in a place as far from Los Angeles as he could get. Can either of them take the chance at the distraction they bring to each other? Can they risk their hearts?
This was a lovely story of two men who in each of their own ways, had experienced profound loss. What they might discover with each other is the acceptance they both crave, the love and completeness neither of them has ever experienced. Most of all and my favorite thing is that they both discover that family has nothing at all to do with blood but everything to do with choice. Found family is perhaps the best gift of all. This was a wonderful book. I loved getting to know these two men and all of their friends. I can’t wait to see what this author does next!
Oh man! I just LOVE this book!! These two are just so cute together and I love how they laugh and just are themselves in everything! It was such a fun read that I devoured and I CANNOT wait for more of the Ink Me family (I already have my favorites I wanna see get their HEA)
This book has been sitting on my kindle forgotten. The other day someone recommended it as a sweet read. I’m so thankful they did. Obviously, I loved it. I have to admit I cried a lot of happy tears. It’s a beautiful story and I’m so glad that I found a new author. I loved Finn and Spencer. They were perfect for each other. I’m not really into wearing makeup, but I loved how Spencer expressed himself. It also was a big turn on for Finn. I also enjoyed all the guys from Ink Me and look forward to reading their stories. I hope Finn and Spencer will be in their books as well. I also loved Gallifrey.
Nice and sweet. The story was very straightforward. I liked the aesthetics of the bookstore and tattoo shop. I liked the secondary characters, Spencer's friends, and the other tattoo studs in the shop. I'm curious because there will be more couples with these characters. I was very surprised by the change in roles regarding sex, and that was good and super hot.
I thought their problems were well portrayed and well resolved; even with how quickly they got together, the problems of each of them were not ignored and it wasn’t cured only by love, but it helped 🫶
Although I respected Spencer's decision to wait for his first time, it seemed unrealistic how long they waited. Considering he was so sexual and had a drawer full of dildos for EVERYTHING. But I don't want to be judgmental (I know, I'm totally being judgmental).
I didn't like some of the clichés and stereotypes that Spencer made about himself, like "my mother knew I was gay when I started trying on dresses and putting on her makeup." Okay, so Finn, all muscular and tattooed, could never be gay?
I'm rambling, but there you go. Overall, it was fun and entertaining, sexy, and hot.
I’ll be honest, if I hadn’t planned on writing this review, I wouldn’t have finished the book. This is a debut author, and unfortunately lack of experience really showed in the repetitive and, at times, tiresome writing. Constant exclamation points are not a substitute for creating emotional moments, conflict, or urgency. The plot felt formulaic, the romance was instalove, and I was disappointed because I usually adore odd couple stories with a hurt-comfort plot. Finn and Spencer could have really shined, but their banter felt trite and juvenile. Each character spent so much page time telling me about the depths and breadths of their grief and trauma that I couldn’t experience it as a reader. As a result, I felt no emotional connection to either character and they read one-dimensional.
This has decent bones but a few newbie author issues got to be too much for me. Some of the dialogue was awkward (lack of contractions and lots of exclamation points) and their voices sounded very similar to me. I also got bothered by the near constant winking. And the pacing was odd at times - e.g. Finn confesses some painful history and moments later they’re making out. Just felt a bit odd to me.
I was like a fox on the prowl last night. That’s a thing, right? Like a sexy fox? Okay, that might be overstating it a little, but god it felt good. I feel like I finally got to stretch my wings, my sexual fairy wings, after being locked up in a cage for years.
OMG 😍 I loved this book, it was an emotional rollercoaster for me, I Relate to finn on so many levels, ruby basically described my background the way I grew up so it was definitely emotional for me. I fell in love with Spencer💓 he was soooo likeable and I just wanted to hug him so bad. I have a gay brother and he is not accepted by our father so this definitely hit a cord. And the ending omg did I bawl. 💓 I look forward to your books in the future Ruby!!!!!
DNF@10%. This is a new author. The premise is cute and I think I could really love this story, but boy does this author need to hire a professional editor.
So. Many. Exclamation. Points. In the characters’ thoughts. Dialogue is seriously unnatural. No one talks that way. And paragraphs are so repetitive. I just could not.
Loved lots of this! I think for a shorter book like this I personally could’ve done one or two less sex scenes but other than that I liked the tropes and side characters. I look forward to the next !
And inked god and a bookstore owner, such and amazing and sweet love story. Spencer and Finn have such an instant connection you can’t help but fall in love with these two right from the beginning. I loved this book and I can’t wait to see what’s next for this amazing group of characters.
Oh this was lovely. I loved the story and how the relationship developed.
This is a story about two men, who had both very difficult pasts and the scars resulting from these experiences.
It is a real love story with a lot of communication and character growing
This is their way to heal together and I loved how the world was built. I can't wait to read the next books cause I really want have the stories of Jaxon, Dom and all the others
"Hidden beneath the rubble, over the course of the last few months, I've found myself."
Very enjoyable story - loved the setting (small town for the win !!), quirky characters and found family. It's not a fluffy and sweet read - it does tackle the MC's personal issues, which goes deep but it's balanced very well with their cute & funny banter. It will hit you with a lot of emotions - you'll be cackling one minute and getting teary-eyed the next.....with a few awwww's thrown inbetween. Great start to new series and look forward to reading about the next pair in line......hehehehe
This is a great debut story. Finn and Spencer are such a great couple. I had a lot of fun reading their sweet and at times emotional story. I'm looking forward to book two in this series. I can't wait to see which couple is next.
I... guess it was okay. I'm sure a lot of people will like it.
I had some issues though. There were SO MANY descriptions of makeup looks and outfits. Even as someone who likes makeup, seriously loved it at some point, even for me it was too much and super uninteresting. Spencer is supposed to be shy, it was mentioned quite a few times but he never was? He was pretty out going. There were some contradictions. Like the tattoo guys say he is shy around them but the first time they all are together he is so outgoing and banters with them. Also he wants to buy the building next door, because the owner moved his company to another part of town, so it's free now and when he gets the keys, it's smells and there are 2 inches of dust? Seriously 2 inches? Did he move his business in the middle ages and it's been empty since then? Or Finn cuddled a few men after sex but then he never cuddled with someone after sex? Why are there so many contradictions?
I'm someone that loves cats. I have cats myself and love them but all the cat scenes annoyed me. It felt weirdly like anti cat propaganda. No cat acts like that. Sure they love food, who doesn't but come on there is over the top and there is over the top, you know.
There was this whole, let's call it mix up scene. Spencer knew what it looked like with the contractor but didn't immediately went after Finn and took at least a day to talk to him? He seriously wondered why Finn didn't call him that night, okay sure.
It's a pet peeve of mine and I know, feeling lonely and being alone is very subjective but I hate when people in books call themselves alone while being surrounded by people that love them. Seriously, the whole freaking town loves Spencer, he has two incredibly close friends and a tattoo studio full of people that look after him and acts like he is alone.
Both mcs were okay I guess. Actually that's not true, Finn was really amazing. He deserves all the love he gets and more. He is also tattooed, has a tongue piercing and long-ish blond hair. *fans herself* Spencer was nice too.
Maybe it's my mood but this book was kinda cringy and boring to me. I hate to say that, I hate sounding like a bitch but these are my feelings about it. I don't regret that I read it and I'm sure other people love it, it just wasn't for me.
What I liked: •The MCs obsessed with each other from the second they meet. •The MCs continuing to pursue each other/no pushing away even tho they had some niggles about how it would all play out due to the circumstances. •The friend group/ found family.
What I disliked: •There is heavy use of “!” at the end of sentences where there is no need for shouting. 🙈 •The heavy topics. There’s some heavy stuff in here but it lacks the emotional follow through to be believable so it just feels out of place in this type of story. •The MCs have a hair trigger for boners EVERYTIME they see each other- this could’ve been balanced out if there was more of an emotional connection and more time spent on that instead of it feeling like it was sex at every touch. I ended up skipping a lot of the sex scenes because it became too constant. Spencer starts the story off with being horny about how hot he thinks the guys from the tattoo studio are and how they’ve starred in a lot of his shower jerk off sessions- it was a little icky to see him fantasizing over these guys right before meeting Finn ( his love interest ) and the guys from the tattoo studio are their found family, it just felt unnecessary 😑 •The drama with Spencer’s ex at the bar could’ve been better if it had happened later on in the story, it felt like it was just thrown in instead of being important 🤷🏻♀️ •Some dialogue felt stiff, especially when it was during the scenes with the heavy topics. •Finn quickly gets over his night terrors the second Spencer is sleeping next to him and his dead sister approves of Spencer. This could’ve been cute had it happened at the very end- it was too soon and like I mentioned before, the heavy topics aren’t dealt with like it’s important it feels like it’s a passing issue, they mention it and maybe shed a few tears and quickly move on, it’s so bizarre.
Overall, I liked it enough to finish it even though some things were definitely OTT and there were quite a few things I disliked. Despite some heavy topics this story never felt somber, it was a very easy read with not much seriousness in it. I’m curious about the rest of the friend group so I’ll probably continue the series!

3.5 Ruby Raynes is not only a new-to-me author but she's also a new author. Considering this is her first book, it's a good start. I think that the idea is definitely there, I think there's a lot of promise with the side characters. She wrote those characters so maybe at some point they can each have their own story, which is smart! I really want to know if all of the relationships that got hinted to come to fruition in the future.
I had a difficult time reading this story, and the main reason for the difficulty was the flow of the story. I think it's just my personal preference, but I wasn't a fan of the author's writing style, it felt disjointed at times and really cluttered? I feel like the MC's were too hyper and chaotic.
Like I stated above though, I think the idea of the story was really good! I loved the idea of Spencer owning a bookshop and then expanding it. I feel like that was mentioned and then didn't happen until the last chapter. Which felt odd to me, but I still loved the concept. If there was a bookstore that also had a cafe attached to it near me, I would be there everyday. I really liked the relationship Finn and Spencer built with each other.
Oh I do love a clumsy main character! And Spenser is my spirit animal in being clumsy! But, his clumsiness leads him to the love of his life, so everything in balance! Finn, oh sweet, patient and kind Finn, this man is the whole package and I’m glad these 2 found each other.
This is my first Ruby Raynes read and I really enjoyed it. However, I don’t believe this writer had found their confidence yet and had held back a little. This is not a bad thing or a criticism! It makes me keen to read the next story in the series, which I am literally going to start reading now!
The Love in Ink Series has so much potential, I’m excited to meet the others in the family.

As a debut, this is actually a pretty good book, and I think subjectively, it might appeal to many people. As I really like possessive-love books, I missed a bit of that here; the intimacy style was similar to what you can find in Riley Heart's books, although you can definitely feel the chemistry between them much stronger than in, for example, Leta Blake's books (very independent MCs) It's a pity because I like possessive relationships, very much taking over the other person.
I think the worst in the book is a scene where Finn sees Spencer in the arms of another man and then he apologizes to Spencer for his panic attack that he had after it! I bulged my eyes in astonishment that Finn didn't even see the need for Spencer to explain what was going on, the vibe of "I trust you", sounded so scripted, un-human, almost like Finn didn't really deeply love Spencer. The "respect" came out as indifference. (He wasn't a human there. He was a poster boy for "I'm a bigger person than a petty jealousy) He just started to explain heavily why he reacted that way, making the problem about HIM. And then, they were making out. Sadly, this scene was very similar in style to Pretty Sweet by Riley Heart the book which I hated to the bone. For me, the worst scene in the book.
Crossdressing- big plus! One of the main motifs is Spencer wearing lingerie, which was, by the way, the reason I picked up this book, as I'm looking for books with well-portrayed crossdressing, and here I have to give Ruby a big plus— crossdressing is shown without immediately imposing that Spencer is actually trans because he likes to wear pink panties. I liked that! Crossdresser erasure is a real thing, the culture of crossdressers is actively destroyed and devalued, and I praise the author for creating Spencer simply as a man who has this kink and not automatically adding "oh, so he's a woman" to it.
For that, I have great respect, and that's why I'm giving the book 3.5 stars instead of 2.5, as I would have without this element.
What others liked about it is the so-called "found family" - and the rejected toxic biological family. For me, the number of additional characters was simply too much, I know, I understand that the author is trying to prepare the ground for further romances in this series, but it simply overwhelmed me. I got lost in the names, problems, interactions.
Too much, too much, too much. I prefer a more linear plot, more focused on the main couple; it tired me after a while.
The ending surprised me a bit, the situation with the death of the mother and deliberation whether to go to the funeral or not. So bizarre. And Strange dreams with the sister, it was a bit creepy for me. The dead sister must pat Finn on the back and approve of his choices? I'm not saying it was bad, but slightly awkward.
And I agree with other opinions that the amount of making out was too much—coming right after dramatic conversations and emotionally difficult confessions. It was a bit inappropriate.
The erasure of Total Tops and Total Bottoms This is my personal opinion, but this growing trope "everyone who feels like a bottom must top" in modern authors' books is astonishing to me. I'm deeply embedded in the LGBTQ+ community and I know a lot of people who are total tops and total bottoms. There's nothing wrong with roles, dear authors. It's not an M+F relationship copy, you really don't have to worry about it. People have the right to preferences. Forcibly portraying a person who dreams of being a bottom - as a top, was for me a reason to deduct one point.
Another plus - mentioning PrEP! I'm almost embarrassed that 95% of women authors still have no idea what it is and insist on condoms every time, like there is no other thing going on in the gay community. Good job here, author!
Virginity positivity Another plus for the author is showing virginity as something that doesn't need to be gotten rid of like a nasty disease (Yes, yes, Mrs. Moore, author of You're My Home! It would be worth it for you to read this book and see that you can show virginity in a good way, not as something disgusting that needs to be gotten rid of as soon as possible!) Ruby shows it as something that should be shared only with the right person, something that doesn't need to be ashamed of. I'm really glad that the author demystified virginity and the negative connotation that women-authors of contemporary romances create around it. Good job, virginity is not evil, and respect to Spencer and Finn for waiting a long time before it happens. It was one of the most satisfying moments in the book.
And a plus for the cat! It served as a good interlude :)
Summarizing. The number of side characters overwhelmed me, and the fairly typical, caricatured portrayal of the queer person's family as stereotypically "bad". It's a pity that authors don't have the courage to break stereotypes. To show more understanding and forgiveness on both sides. I recommend the book "On a Different Mission" by Christie Gordon. You can show forgiveness in a relationship with a toxic, religious parent and do it well, with dignity.
Overall, it's a decent book, it has its flaws, but I think they're mostly subjective.
Finn has moved across the country to get away from his toxic family and start fresh at a tattoo parlor. He has some trama that he is dealing with. Then he bumps into this klutzy man who stands out.
Spencer owns his mother’s Bookstore, while going to college trying to figure out what he is missing in his life. He is also trying to love himself more for who he really is and letting people see the real him, slowly.
Finn and Spencer help each other grow and learn from their past and help better each other.
This is my first book from this author and I am SO glad I chose to read it! Being a part of Spencer & Finn’s lives was awesome—the storyline was spot-on and the 🔥 was off the charts! Definitely recommend!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
New author for me and I was pleased to discover at the end of the book, that it was the author's first book as well. The characters were well thought out and they leapt off the pages. There were sufficient side characters to understand that this is the first in a series of books with more to come. Story was interesting and well written. Can't wait to see what comes next.
A good read (I love me a tattoo artist story) about a young man who escapes California for the Maine. He's got a toxic drug addict mother and brother and is still mourning the death of his sister. He meets Spencer, a young man running the book store beside the tattoo shop. They both live in apartments above the shops and Spencer is a total clutz, who can't believe a hottie like Finn would be attracted to him.
You get to meet the friends of both sides. The tattoo shop guys have been watching out for Spencer since his mom passed and it's kind of a found family theme. I do find the obnoxious female friend who is really loud and, I don't know, just OTT, to be annoying (personal taste) but it's a cute story. I'd be curious about some of the other guys finding their HEA.
I literally spent every single page trying to decide who I love more between Spencer and Finn and the end result is to just scoop them both up and love them both forever because oh my heart 😍😍😍. I enjoyed their story so much 🥰, but it's not all sunshine and rainbows 🥺. And boy did my heart hurt for both of these guys at times.
But, not only are these two so flipping adorable, this story gets you so excited for all of the potential future stories that can come from this. At the time of my reading, the next couple' story is out, so I'm off to read that, but I was paying attention and there should at least be a few more. 🥹
Reviewed for Love Bytes Reviews Finn is the story of Dragonfly Bookstore owner Spencer and tattoo artist Finn. Finn is hired at Ink Me, the tattoo parlor next door to Dragonfly Books. They each have an apartment upstairs from the stores and meet when Spencer smacks into Finn as they are by their front doors. Spencer lost his mom fairly recently and is grieving while Finn left California to escape his mom, who frankly doesn’t deserve the title. There are some heavy topics in this story, drug addiction, loss of a parent, panic attacks. Despite this, the whole mood of the book is pretty light. There are some awesome side characters in Jules, Alex, Jaxon, Mira and Dom. Alex especially, “I lost his back!” made me smile. As did the very badass Mira. There is an evil ex, who frankly I felt Spencer gave too much brain space to and who definitely didn’t deserve even a second thought. There were comments throughout about Spencer living his authentic life, which I am assuming was because he wears makeup and manties. At one point Finn says, “For Spencer, even living as his true self takes guts.” That sort of confused me, why “even”? Again, because of the makeup? The evil ex did have a problem with the makeup so I sort of could see where Spencer doubted himself but not why Finn thought so. The story of them getting to know each other through Finn’s baggage and Spencer’s clumsiness is endearing at times, funny at other time. They have a solid group of friends behind them, who encourage and support. There is a misunderstanding that caused a little blip, but otherwise it’s a pretty even-keeled story. One thing that is, I’m sure, just a me thing – there were way too many exclamation points. I know this seems silly but things that should have just been stated were given the exclamation. There were 536 exclamation points, which was distracting for me.
- Bookstore Owner/Tattoo Artist - Hurt/Comfort - Makeup & Lingerie - Meddling Friends - Dramatic Cat - Found Family - First Times (Virgin MC)
I read Jaxon first from this series, so it was nice to go back and read about how Spencer and Finn came to be. Spencer is an adorable klutz and should honestly roll around with padding the poor thing. Finn is trying to have a fresh start from all the things back home that hurt him. They both have some growing internally that they need to do in order to be healthy for each other and themselves. These two have an instant attraction to one another and it never lets up. I liked that throughout all of the things that get thrown at them they never wavered from each other, building up that much needed trust. They would take a couple of days to think about the situation and their reaction and then went to the other and talked it out. Wish more couples in books would do this honestly. I loved the way they built up each other's self-esteem and the way Finn allowed Spencer to fully blossom.
Now, this was Ruby's debut and there are indicators of such but it doesn't take away from the main story. Even with some of the repetition I still enjoyed the story and how they became a strong couple. I'm interested in seeing how the rest of their group comes together in the rest of this series.

Wow. So this is my first book by this author, and when I read the blurb, I knew this was EXACTLY what i was looking for, and I was right! I needed a book with low angst and high heat as well as alllll the sweet, scary emotions that happen when falling in love or reading about someone else falling in love. These two men have been through some really hard times. Spencer is finishing up his degree and working to keep his mom's bookstore and dream afloat while also dealing with the grief of having to watch her fade away. His emotions are on a fine line, and he has a lot on his shoulders, but he's doing it because it's what he loves. On top of that, he enjoys things like makeup and lace, and other "men" have put him down or made him feel ashamed of it. But then he meets Finn, his sexy tattooed new neighbor. Finn is new in town and about to start at a tattoo shop to make a better life for himself. He was drowning where he was living before, having to deal with his own grief after a tragic event and having his mother and brother going down and dark hole and trying to drag him down with them. But then he met Spencer. Together, two lost souls meet, and without expecting it, they find a part of themselves that they didn't know was missing. Spencer shows Finn what it's like to have love and a family and to be supported, and Finn shows Spencer that underneath his doubt, he's confident and sexy and inspiring. They bring out the very best in each other, and reading about them falling in love was truly beautiful. And I can not express how hot these two were together!!!! The deeper their feelings got, the more intense their need for each other got, and they could not keep their hands off each other. I'm definitely so excited to read more from these wonderful characters, and I highly recommend you take the leap and read about them too
