Berkeley Square: A Play in Three Acts

Events of the past, present and future mingle in the life of one man. Peter Standish, an ardent young American inherits a house in Berkeley Square and changes places with his ancestor, the Peter Standish who came from New York in 1784 and married his cousin Kate. He takes up the threads of the earlier Peter's life but falls in love with Kate's sister. They have to part, for the modern world recalls the modern Peter and his ancestor clamors to return to his period.

ENGLISH: This is the second time I've watched this play, in the RTVE archive. I watched it first a long time ago. Based on an unfinished novel by Henry James, this work relies on the B theory of time, proposed by McTaggart in 1908. See this post in my blog, where I explain it: Time A or Time B?. Personally, I prefer the A theory of time, so I consider impossible the plot of this play, although as a literary work it's not bad.

The play is based on the idea that two people who share the same name and physical appearance, but lived separated by almost two centuries, could make an exchange and live in each other's time. But there is a problem: the traveler to the past is very silly, and every time he opens his mouth he makes a blunder.

I find it curious that two of the works by Henry James have a Square in their title: this play and Washington Square

ESPAÑOL: Esta es la segunda vez que he visto esta obra, en el archivo de Estudio-1. La primera vez la vi hace mucho tiempo. Basada en una novela inconclusa de Henry James, esta obra se apoya en la teoría del tiempo B, propuesta por McTaggart en 1908. Véase este artículo de mi blog, donde lo explico: ¿Tiempo A o Tiempo B?. Personalmente, prefiero la teoría del Tiempo A, por lo que considero que la historia descrita en esta obra es imposible, aunque como argumento literario no está mal.

La obra se basa en la idea de que dos personas que comparten el mismo nombre y aspecto físico, pero vivieron separadas por casi dos siglos, podrían intercambiarse y vivir cada uno en el tiempo del otro. Lo malo es que el viajero hacia el pasado es muy tonto, y cada vez que abre la boca mete la pata.

بيتر ستانديش والعودة إلى الماضي، حيث يرتطم الواقع بالخيال، الحقيقة والظل، حي وسط الأموات، أو ميت وسط الأحياء، بيتر الذي يشبه جده في صورته واسمه وهيئته يعود بآلة الزمن لأكثر من مئة عام، يتوقع لهم المستقبل، يحكي لهم عن أشياء لم يسمعوا عنها، يفكك المجتمع وتقاليده ف هذا الوقت.. النساء تباع في كل العصور.. يحاول توم بكل الطرق عرض أخته كيت على بيتر الذي يحصل سنوياً على أكثر من 10 آلاف، يريد استغلاله وتسديد ديونه من خلال أخته التي ستباع كزوجة له، بيتر متأكد أنه سيتزوج كيت، فكل شئ عرفه وهو الحفيد، بل أنه أنجب 3 من كيت، لكن تقرف منه كيت وتخشاه، في الوقت نفسه الذي يقع بيتر في غرام أختها هيلين، كانت تفهمه وتمنحه فكرة السلام والوطن بدل الاغتراب الذي شعر به وسط الآخرين، أحبها وأحبته، حب الحي للميت والحقيقة للظل، والواقع للطيف، حبا مثالياً غريباً، ويقرر تغيير كل شئ، يعود لزمنه الحقيقي ويجد نفسه شخصاً آخر، كل ما يريده هو الحفاظ على ذكرى حبيبته، المعجزة ويعيش وحيداً مع الطيف.

Starts slow, finishes strong. A really charming little play, but can you really imagine anyone but Leslie Howard pulling it off?
