In 1885 Chinese laborers were brought to North America to build the railroads. The triads came with them. Caught up in the clashes, Tiger Chang manages to send a letter home about an incredible discovery.
128 years later…
Phil Hardy just wants everyone to leave him alone. That way no one gets hurt. Running from his past, he thinks he has found the peace he’s seeking on the cliffs looking out over the shores of Lake Superior.
Dragon Chang is following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, in search of his discovery. The young triad leader will use all his available resources, including the killing skills he learned on the opium smuggling routes in China, to locate and secure his future.
Local police officer April Harrison has a handle on everything going on in her community, except her abusive ex-husband.
Everything goes sideways when she starts asking questions about who is hanging around the old ghost town of Jackfish and the past begins to catches up with the present in more ways than one.
Jackfish reborn is a book I received from story cartel in exchange for an honest review. I picked it up basically because the storyline seemed different from other books that I have read. There are other books by the same author which caught my attention too. So I guess there is going to be more of Rejean Giguere on my book shelves.
Coming back to this book. Here is what I think.
Cover-page: cover-page is very interesting. It works well for catching somebody’s attention. The book cover says a lot about the story inside but still a lot is hidden. I kind of like the concept.
Characters: characters in the book are very different from each other. There is Dragon Chang who is a Chinese smuggler. He has come to the old town of Jackfish to discover the treasure that his grandfather discovered but could not bring it back.
There is Phil , who is a retired police officer. He now resides on the top of a hill in the town, running away from all the bad memories of the past. He is a handsome young man turned into wild.
And finally there is April Harrison. She is a traffic cop. Escaping a failed marriage and an abusive ex-husband she settles down in the town.
Until the first half of the book the story keeps moving back and forth from the present and past. The three characters in the present and Tiger, Dragon’s grandfather, in the past.
When you come across the characters you find yourself in awe. How can these characters be possibly connected? But here the suspense starts. Each of the character is designed to fit the bill. They are very unique and well sketched out.
Concept: the concept is very intriguing. The entire setting of the story is very different.
Story line: the story is about this town in Canada which is abandoned after a huge fire broke out at that place. In 80’s a man while laying down tracks in this town discovered a treasure which would allow generations after his to live in world’s best luxury. But as it happens, he is not able to take the treasure to his place. He instead writes a letter to his family explaining about the treasure.
Years later his grandson follows the trail and reaches Jackfish to discover the treasure.
The storyline is very gripping. It will keep you turning pages throughout the night.
Language: the language is very simple. The author is more of a storyteller than a writer. If you have loved Sidney Sheldon then you are going to love him too. Even though he has a long way to go before he even comes as near as Sheldon, his language is identical to Sheldon.
Good points: the book started very well. There was suspense at each point. All the characters are designed very well. The book keeps up the suspense revealing everything at the right time. The book is very gripping and definitely worth your time.
Not-so-good points: well, after all the suspense it generated I was expecting the book to end with a thunder. While it did happen, it also left another story unsaid. A curious person that I am, there are few answers that I am seeking for. What happens to the treasure finally? Does anyone discover it at all? Do Phil and April marry and get over their past lives? Hmmm… there needs to be a sequel!!
Overall: overall, the book is very interesting. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good thriller to spend his time with. I would give it 4 stars. Shall definitely get hold of other books by the author.
On the shore of Lake Superior lies the town of Jackfish. It’s a ghost town that has been abandoned for several years but it holds many secrets. In 1883 Chinese laborers were building a railroad and Tiger Chang was using the workers to support his opium business. Tiger sent a letter home to China about a discovery he made that would secure the future of his family’s business but he made it in the form of a riddle. Flash forward to the present when Dragon Chang arrives in Jackfish to search for his great grandfather’s discovery and further expand his family’s drug empire.
There is more than that going on in Jackfish though, a wild man as the locals call him has moved into the ghost town and he doesn’t like Dragon and his crew on his land. His name is Phil and he is looking to escape his past and live in the wilderness away from civilization. Also adding to the story is a local cop named April who has come to investigate the visitors to Jackfish. She has a rough past of her own and may be in over her head.
Jackfish Reborn by Rejean Giguere is a thriller but not your ordinary thriller. Its set mostly in the wild around Lake Superior and includes a lot of wildlife references that I enjoyed. Phil sees a lot of animals around his home and the book has good descriptions of a bear attack, a battle between a wolf and moose and an encounter with a cougar. I liked all of the characters in this book but Phil was my favorite because it was like he was in a battle with himself. He is looking for a change and trying to forget all of the things that happened in his past, but he doesn’t seem to be able to leave his past behind no matter how hard he tries.
Another thing that really kept me wanting to read this book was trying to find out what Tiger’s discovery was. All you know is that it will change Dragon’s life and he doesn’t want anyone else to find it. I enjoyed how the suspense in the story increases as you hear how this discovery is effecting all of the characters, even though they don’t know what it is. Also in the story April has an abusive ex-husband that added another dimension to the tale and made things interesting.
There are four major storylines that are masterfully woven together here and each character has a lot of depth. I liked the fact that the story is set mostly in the wild because I don’t think it would have worked as well if it was set in a city. I felt it made Jackfish Reborn more interesting and I liked how the wildlife added to the action that was in the last half of the story. In my opinion Jackfish Reborn is a story about accepting your past and not letting it dictate your future. This book was one great thrill ride and I highly recommend it.
This is the second book I have read by this author and this is his latest book, and was not disappointed, (the first was Endpoint, click here to read the review. Another action adventure from Rejean. A well written book with only 190 pages but don´t let that put you off, there is plenty of action, a little mystery with the characters and even a smidgen of romance.
Interesting and engaging start, the book takes you from China in the year 2012 to Canada in the year 1883 and then to the year 2012 in Canada and there are various jumps in time thought the book, but there is no problem in understanding the time jumps, it is very well explained and written.
The best parts of all for me were the 1883 when Tiger was the main character. Although I did also enjoyed the well researched history of Jackfish. (Jackfish is a ghost town in Canada). You learn quickly the connection between the future and the past. I also loved Phil´s character.
Nicely written gun battles in the bush around the ghost town, nice descriptions of the surrounding areas and there is enough action to keep you wanting to read more.
The book was nicely wrapped up, the title suits it fine as does the cover. For more information click on the link, http://www.rejeangiguere.com/
I found that this book started strong - I enjoyed reading the history of the building of the railroad and getting the background about the characters. I thought the ending of the book was rushed. I felt that not enough time was spent on Phil's history before he became reclusive - the author does mention it as the end but this is what felt rushed. I wish that the author would have spent more time describing Phil's shelter - I thought that it was odd that this was being focused near the end of the book instead of at the beginning or middle. Also, I didn't see the benefit of the ex husband. He did not really add to the character development of police officer or add to the story. If the author could have continued the story as he started, this book would have been 4 stars.
PS: There are some spelling mistakes (p. 158, 200) that I'm sure will be addressed before the final publishing of the book
It is rare that you get a complete set of 3 dimensional characters from the leads to support, but that is exactly what you get with this book. I love a good adventure but this one surpassed any hope with the strong characters. On top of that the plot just keeps on giving. The book effortlessly shifts between current time and 1883 when the Chinese were building the railroad system in Canada. This is a don't put it down book!
I got this book as part of goodreads.com first read program I really love this book. Aside from the fact that it was a easy read(but by no need simple) it had a well develop plot. For classification purpose I would say Jackfish Reborn is a action suspense novel. At the back drop of Jackfish Reborn is the history of the Canadian rail development intertwine the fictional characters adventure and action pack plot. I good read. 5/5 stars.
