About the author

നോവലിസ്റ്റ്, ചെറുകഥാകൃത്ത്, കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റ്, രാഷ്ട്രീയ ചിന്തകന്‍, പത്രപ്രവര്‍ത്തകന്‍. 1930 ജൂലൈ 2-ന് പാലക്കാട് വിളയന്‍ചാത്തനൂരില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. ചെന്നൈ പ്രസിഡന്‍സി കോളജില്‍നിന്ന് ഇംഗ്ലിഷ് എം.എ. കുറച്ചുകാലം കോളജില്‍ അദ്ധ്യാപകന്‍. പിന്നീട് ശങ്കേഴ്‌സ് വീക്ക്‌ലി, പെട്രിയറ്റ്, ദ സ്റ്റേറ്റ്‌സ്മാന്‍ എന്നീ ആനുകാലികങ്ങളില്‍ പത്രപ്രവര്‍ത്തകന്‍. നോവല്‍, കഥ, ലേഖനം, കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലായി 30 കൃതികള്‍. 1990-ല്‍ കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ്; സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ്, 1991-ല്‍ വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (ഗുരുസാഗരം), 1992-ല്‍ മുട്ടത്തു വര്‍ക്കി അവാര്‍ഡ് (ഖസാക്കിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം), 1999-ല്‍ എം.പി. പോള്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (തലമുറകള്‍) എന്നീ പുരസ്‌കാരങ്ങള്‍. 2001-ല്‍ കേരള ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ എഴുത്തച്ഛന്‍ പുരസ്‌കാരം. 2003-ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷണ്‍ ലഭിച്ചു. 2005 മാര്‍ച്ച് 30-ന് അന്തരിച്ചു.


O. V. Vijayan was born in Palakkad on July 2, 1930. His father O. Velukkutty was an officer in Malabar Special Police of the erstwhile Madras Province in British India.Formal schooling began at the age of twelve, when he joined Raja’s High School, Kottakkal in Malabar, directly in to sixth grade. The following year, Velukkutty was transferred and Vijayan joined the school at Koduvayur in Palakkad. He graduated from Victoria College in Palakkad and obtained a masters degree in English literature from Presidency College.
While he lived outside Kerala for most of his adult life, spending time in Delhi and in Hyderabad (where his wife Teresa was from), he never forgot his beloved Palakkad, where the 'wind whistles through the passes and the clattering black palms'. He created a magical Malabar in his works, one where the mundane and the inspired lived side-by-side. His Vijayan-land, a state of mind, is portrayed vividly in his work.

Vijayan was unlucky not to win India's principal literary prize, the Jnanpith, possibly because he did not endear himself to the political powers-that-be through his trenchant cartoons (Shankar's Weekly, The Far Eastern Economic Review, The Hindu, The Statesman). However, in 2003, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award.

മകനു വേണ്ടി പൊതിച്ചോര് തയ്യാറാക്കി അതും കൊണ്ട്‌ സ്വന്തം മകനെ കാണാന്‍ പോകുന്ന വെള്ളയിയപ്പനേയും... യന്ത്രവല്‍ക്കരണത്തിന്റെ അവസ്ഥയെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഇരുപതാംനൂറ്റാണ്ട്‌..... സമയത്തെ ദൈവം ആയി കരുതുന്ന ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ കഥ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ചെങ്ങന്നൂര്‍ തീവണ്ടിയും.. എല്ലാ കഥയും ഒരു പോലെ ഇഷ്ടപെട്ട വേറെ ഒരു കഥ ഇതുവരെ ഞാന്‍ വായിച്ചിട്ടില്ല ............ ഒ.വി വിജയന്‍ ഇതിഹാസത്തിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസ കലാകരന്‍....

എന്തൊക്കെയാണ് ഇങ്ങേര് പറയുന്നത് എന്നത് ഒറ്റവായനായിലൂടെ ഗ്രഹിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല. പലവുരുവുള്ള വായനയിലൂടെ മാത്രം മനസ്സിലാക്കിയെടുക്കാവുന്ന വിജയൻ എഴുത്ത്!
ചില കഥകളുടെ ഒന്നും സാരാംശം ഇപ്പോഴും വ്യക്തമല്ല. എന്നാൽ ചിലത് അതിഗംഭീരം. മിക്കതിലും കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യൽപെടുന്നത് ഒരേ വിഷയങ്ങൾ- അസ്തിത്വദുഃഖം, സാങ്കേതികതയുടെ കടന്നുകയറ്റം, പ്രകൃതി/സാംസ്കാരിക/സമൂഹിക ദർശനം എന്നിവ.
ഏകാഗ്രമായ വായന ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നവർക്ക് മികച്ച ഒരു അനുഭവം.

Complex ideas in a complex way of writing.A collection of short stories,all have the complex touch of O.V.Among them i liked 'kadaltheerath' and 'sangamam' the most(to be frank,these were among the few stories i truly understood).This book is a measuring scale regarding our experience with malyalam literature.The more you find it hard to understand,the less you know malayalam literature(my opinion ).

Most of the stories were very abstract and flew above my head . So my review need not be taken at its face value . From what I read and understood, I felt the book is just an average book . More focused reading may give better understanding.. contrary to my observations on the book,first story - 'kadaltheerathu' was really touching..

Nice collection of stories.
I noticed that some of the characters or places were referenced in other stories. Probably I need to re-read it to understand the writing style completely.
I found the writing style very complicated for my level, but overall the stories were really good and engaging.
