Winston Graham was an English novelist best known for the Poldark series of historical novels set in Cornwall, though he also wrote contemporary thrillers, period novels, short stories, non-fiction, and plays. Born in Victoria Park, Manchester, he moved to Perranporth, Cornwall in 1925 and lived there for 34 years. Graham published his first novel, The House with the Stained Glass Windows, in 1934 and married Jean Williamson in 1939, who inspired the character Demelza in Poldark. During World War II, he joined the Auxiliary Coastguard Service. Graham became a member of the Society of Authors in 1945, serving as chairman from 1967 to 1969, and was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, receiving an OBE in 1983. His Poldark series began with Ross Poldark in 1945 and concluded with Bella Poldark in 2002. He wrote 30 additional novels, short stories, and non-fiction works, including the acclaimed thriller Marnie, adapted by Alfred Hitchcock in 1964. Several other novels, including The Walking Stick and Fortune Is a Woman, were adapted for film. Graham also wrote plays, some adapted from his novels. His works have been translated into 31 languages, and his autobiography, Memoirs of a Private Man, was published posthumously in 2003.

I'm glad I didn't know about the Poldark series on PBS ; my wife and daughter would have mocked me like I did them with Downton Abbey . So I like it . Got a problem with that ?

This was actually the first 2 books out of 11 in the Poldark series. I caught this new series from BBC broadcast on Materpiece this summer on the PBS channel. I had read these two books way back in the 70's as a teenager but had forgotten most of it till I saw the new series this summer on PBS. So I went back and reread both novels and plan to read the next two in the series! Those of you who love historical fiction and romance will enjoy these books and since they were originally published in 1945 the romantic portions are written in good taste and not quite so vulgar as compared to today's writers who want to describe every aspect of a sexual encounter and bedroom scene leaving nothing to the imagination! That's the plug for the books! they are great and move fast.

However I STRONGLY urge you to watch the MASTERPIECE series that played on PBS this summer called POLDARK which follows these two novels closely. The characters really come to life in this sweeping love triangle and absolutely gorgeous scenery and Im not just talking about Cornwall England. Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark is an absolute heart throb! But you will fall in love with the other characters as well great acting, great story. I cant wait to see the next season so I have to read the next two books to find out what happens! The series airs on MASTERPIECE SAME AS DOWNTON ABBEY BUT I THINK THIS SERIES IS BETTER! So Downton Abbey fans watch for yourselves and see!

I had to start the Graham book series after viewing season one of Poldark on Masterpiece Theater--an extraordinary PBS series with gorgeous views of Cornwall and superior acting!!! Winston Graham's prose is beyond comparable. His lyrical descriptions, folksy dialog and knowledge of copper mining and character and class distinction transport the reader to the 17th century--like armchair time travel, a genre I am particularly fond of. Season Two just began with the same promise of excellence we can expect from a PBS adaptation of Graham's wonderful family saga.

I enjoyed reading it as a companion to the PBS series on TV. Now I'm waiting for my library to get the rest of the book series.
