God is the flame, and we are the sparks. The way up is within—through knowledge, we kindle this divine fire, and the lower centers of the body transmute it upwards.
Heavy on symbolism:
• The lotus flower—its stem is the spine, the bloom is the brain. When unconscious forces unravel, the flower “blooms,” The Western version is the rose, hence the Rosicrucians, essentially Christian Gnostics.
•Alchemy—not literal gold, but inner transformation. The “Philosopher’s Stone” is about harmonizing spirit and body. Life’s hard knocks shape us like a gemstone until we reflect divine light.
•There’s a bit on King Arthur’s sword—the sword (spirit) is trapped in the rock (body). Only by freeing it does one become “king” in a spiritual sense. The Masonic apron covers the lower body, symbolizing purification needed for spiritual ascent.
•Then there’s the Dweller on the Threshold a demon blocking the path to enlightenment. It’s essentially the shadow self, like Jung described, made up of all the negative baggage from past actions and thoughts. Face it, or stay stuck.
Hall’s writing is beautiful:
“The Knight… His shield is truth… His sword is the spiritual light with which the pure flame of the spirit fire dispels the darkness of ignorance and the demons of lust.”
Even the pyramid—from afar, one solid structure, but up close, thousands of carefully placed stones. A metaphor for life itself—built on small, intentional actions.
