Kate Wyland's "Forewarning" is a well-written, compelling mystery, and also a story of healing - both physical and emotional.
The book centers around Kasey Martin, a young woman with a very special talent. She's got an almost supernatural sense of empathy, and a gift for manipulating the energies of the body to promote healing. But when we meet her, she's sworn off using her talent, due to the traumatic death of her husband a year previously. Instead, she's turned all her energies to running her ranch, training and caring for horses. All that changes when she comes across a severely injured man on the edge of her property. Against her better judgment, she uses her talent to save him, hoping that it won't come back to haunt her.
But it does, when the man wakes up the next day with amnesia, and Kasey slowly finds herself drawn into the mystery of this strange man as he tries to recover his memories and figure out who he is and how he cane to be on the verge of death on Kasey's ranch. While the stranger's mind and body both heal, Kasey has to try and heal her own emotional wounds as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The prose is very clean and clear. The characters are all very well-drawn and believable, as is the author's depiction of small town life. I especially liked Kasey. She's handled with great maturity, and she's an extremely sympathetic and relateable character. Her dilemma over using her talent, and the potential consequences, really touched me.
I would highly recommend this book; anyone who's a fan of mysteries, and of characters with depth and real emotions, should thoroughly enjoy it.
