Maddie Foster is trapped. Trapped in a marriage with a man who despises her. Trapped in a city that she can never call home. Trapped in a never ending cycle of fear for the safety of herself and her three year old daughter, Willow. She knows the only option to protect herself, Willow, and her unborn child is to flee, but she has no funds, no car, no plan, and no one in her life left to help her. Five years of marriage to her abusive, control freak husband has made sure of that.
As kids, Hunter Coleman, Cameron Lewis, and Kai Chen considered themselves Maddie’s protectors. All foster kids, they met at a youth group when they were ten years old, and the rest, as they say, was history. Until one fateful night, Maddie’s sixteenth birthday, changed everything. The guys disappeared without a word and left Maddie alone and devastated.
When a chance meeting finds Maddie and Hunter crossing paths once again, Hunter is enraged by what he finds has happened to the girl he has always been in love with. He tries to swoop in and rescue her, just as he did when she was younger, but Maddie will never forgive him or his brothers for leaving her. She walks away, leaving Hunter powerless to help her. But he won’t give up. They never should have left Maddie that night, and there’s no way he’ll leave her again now. He enlists the help of an old military buddy, Nico Gallo, to help watch over Maddie while he and his brothers come up with a plan to take back the girl they have never stopped loving. But when Maddie’s violent husband takes things too far, Nico has no choice but to step in and get Maddie and her daughter to safety. Even if that safety is the home of the three men Maddie despises for abandoning her.
Can she ever forgive the guys for leaving her that night? Can they earn back her trust in the process of caring for and protecting her and her daughter? Will they ever get to call her theirs?
This is book three in the 'Milite' series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a reverse harem romance which means the main female character will have more than one love interest. Check inside book for trigger warnings. Intended for readers 18 +
Not gonna lie, it’s pretty heavy. Just make sure you read the trigger prior. I’ve listed them below 👇
⚠️Spoiler Alert⚠️
First off, I loved that it wasn’t an insta-love. My hatred towards them is so strong. The guys definitely feel very strongly towards her, but this is a second chance romance, so stuff occurs and she has very mixed feeling. Due to the plot twist at the start, she is very bitter and rightfully so. She acknowledges that they are still hot (she has eyes), but she doesn’t just jump back into their arms. She never plays the victim or wants the guys to be overprotective of her. She is super independent.
In many instances, they touched her, she moved away and she was honest, usually not caring if she is hurting their feeling. Just because they somewhat saved her doesn’t mean that boundaries haven’t been set and that they don’t have to work to build back her trust. She thinks about herself & her kids first and acknowledges that her feelings were justified and valid. Here’s to a woman that do not just cave. Props to the author.
Very BIG triggers in this. I have read one of her previous books and it had equally dark subject matters. It includes domestic violence, SA of the FMC (brief flashback scene), Child abuse, SA of a minor (brief description) & (Military) PTSD. Yeah it’s a lot. I did have to skim bits that I knew were building up to something.
—
On the guys, I really wasn’t sure about Hunter at the start. He repeated himself at bit, but I think it was because he couldn’t reveal a lot to her yet. Nico is super cute, very protective. Similarly to to Kai and Cam is still a bit of an enigma to me. (I’m only up to 45%, so we haven’t got a ton from Cam really)
Willow is adorable and actual sounds like a 3 year old. I feel like frequently kids are written a lot younger than they are and say super cheesy sh7t. She did neither.
At quite a few points, it seems like the author was trying to make connections to her other books. Specifically the one with Mia and her harem in it, but I’m not sure if this is a current or future book. I haven’t read a lot of her other work, so it did confuse me a little.
I’m only up to the 45% mark, but I’m gonna take a slight book break from this one. Mostly because of the dark subject matter. I’m definitely coming back to it though. At first I didn’t understand why the trigger warning was at the back of the book, however if I would have read it beforehand, I would have felt super reluctant to start it. I only skipped to the back of the book, when I stopped reading and now I know what’s coming, I definitely need a break.
I enjoyed this - it was so angsty and beautiful, but I really wish I had read the warnings because I was not expecting to cry the last 20% of the book basically. Beautifully written but oh my goodness, my heart ached after reading.
SYNOPSIS (Standalone): The FC, Maddie, met 3 of the MCs whilst in foster care where she lived with an abusive couple. Due to circumstances the MCs had to leave without telling the FC which meant she felt deserted. Fast forward 13 years and the FC has a 3yr old daughter, is pregnant and stuck with an abusive, controlling husband. She works for Milite as a receptionist and is falling for Nico one of the partners. She bumps into one of her foster MCs out of the blue and that same night her husband goes too far and she flees. For her safety she goes to live with her foster MCs and Nico joins them. Most of the story is about how Maddie reconnects with the MCs and gets used to an RH relationship. There is a little drama with a HEA.
Heat Level: There are a handful of sex scenes in the second half and no group scenes. Personally I found them a bit cringy to read and not particularly hot or sexy.
Overall the story is slow moving and superficial with little depth to the characters, relationship or worldbuilding. The writing is clunky and lacks emotion, with the story being quite basic and by the numbers. There's very little action in the story, it starts with some drama with the FC leaving her husband then just meanders until the end where there is a bit of manufactured drama to create drama. Overall I found the story boring and the FC unlikable - was skipping pages by the end.
When an author chooses to portray real life issues in their books this can be done well and sensitively, really adding to the depth of the story and characters. This author, unfortunately, did what I hate. She chose to have her heroine be a victim of domestic abuse but, in my opinion, didn't then deal with the abuse in a realistic or respectful way. It was merely a gimic to provide a "broken" heroine and an excuse for drama and the MCs to save her. The FC was supposed to have been abused and raped by her last foster father but did nothing to get herself out of the situation because she "didn't want to leave in case the MCs returned for her". She then appears to have leapt into a relationship with her husband who turned out to also be abusive and raped her. This makes no sense. If she had suffered abuse at the hands of her foster father she would not be jumping into a relationship let alone with a man who apparently had never been loving or affectionate. At no point does the FC say that things were good with Edward so you have to wonder why she married him in the first place. People who suffer the kind of abuse the FC went through do not trust easily.
It then seems that even after the abuse the FC not only stayed with him without trying to leave but then brought a child into the situation and then became pregnant a second time. Is she stupid? I understand that abused woman can get into a certain mindset that makes it hard for them to leave but the author made no attempt to show how brainwashed abused women can be and gave no explanations as to what the FC had been doing for the past 13 years or why she had stayed in the relationship she was in or even got into it in the first place. It wasn't until her daughter was harmed that the FC finally walked out.
The FC then seems to quickly get over any fear of men or violence and is immediately thinking about how attractive all the MCs are and is seemingly fixated on their muscles. When it comes to sex she shows no problems with essentially demanding sex and appears to have no hang ups. She would be more wary and less inclined to want to jump in with other men or trust them (even if she had known them when younger). I found the FC's ability to jump into bed with Kai for the first time unrealistic. If you’ve been raped and abused for years there’s just no way you'd be so aggressive and begging for sex. I also found the whole sex scene a bit cringy with her “flat bottom” (yeh, that’s hot - not) and her gasping at how “big” Kai is 🙄. That just doesn't track with a woman who really had been in an abusive relationship.
The fact that the FC blamed the MCs for her abusive marriage was absurd. Yes they abandoned her but she’s the one who married Edward and she’s the one who stayed with him and allowed herself to get pregnant not once but twice. How are they to blame for her being spineless and stupid? The FC came across as weak and pathetic, crying at the drop of a hat, doing nothing to save herself or her daughter and more than happy to allow the MCs do everything for her and her daughter. I really could not see any reason at all why any of the men would fall for her let alone be so besotted with her that they were willing to share her and the author did not bother to try and show us why.
As for the MCs, the author spent more time expounding on the size of their muscles and hotness than really giving us an idea of them as individuals. I mean, how many times do we have to be told how muscular the men are? There was limited background or character building just the MCs constantly looking after the daughter (when did they actually do any work) and running around after the FC.
In summary, I'm sorry to say I found this book painful and full of badly dealt with tropes as well as boring.

THOUGHTS: I've read another small series by this author before so I kind of had her "style" down. This story was sweet with touches of darkness throughout. The loss they all share and suffer through twists your heart as intended and the guys are all supportive despite it. My issue with the last books I read and this one as well is how it's all concluded. It just kind of sizzles and dies out without much satisfaction. They get their HEA and that's what counts but the conflict is pretty far removed from the events we see going on. Maybe that's just me? This one definitely felt less fleshed out and it honestly needed more connection with the guys instead of being agreeable meat puppets at times. There were also a few… I'll say "editing" errors… more like inconsistencies. Locations, names, repetitive phrasing, etc. It wasn't unbearable but if you're bothered by that, ye be warned. All that said, it wasn't a bad read by any means. Maybe I just have the bar set too high currently but I wanted a little more substance from this one. Taylor is capable of writing about characters with deeply painful lives learning to adjust to something much better.
I really like Taylor as an author. But her fmcs are getting worse and worse.... *insert crying emoji*
Taylor writes about some seriously traumatized women. Which I love. Misery porn? Yes please. But because of their trauma sometimes they act out in anger. I usually try to look past it because I understand that is how people deal with trauma sometimes. But it's getting worse. The fmc will lash out at the mmcs and refuse their help and it is getting so frustrating. For example "they had been so good to me and I reused to be rude" pg 118. But literally the entire time she has been there she had been rude? I literally rolled my eyes so many times at the fmc. Example: "I'm perfectly capable of taking care of my daughter, Kai," I snapped, annoyed" pg. 110.
Not only that... but later on in the book when the mmcs are getting involved in something dangerous and the fmc runs in without any real idea of what is going on. Ugh. It's so annoying. Like... let the professionals handle it.
Also... she ends up in the hospital after being attacked by her husband because they need to check on the baby. Once she is cleared she goes on a plane which can also be questionable during pregnancy. Mind you, she should ALSO be getting checkups in general. But once she goes to live with the guys she is sick all the time and goes WEEKS? without another checkup? Then keeps insisting she doesn't need to see a doctor. Ugh. Okay. Yet she is soooo worried about her baby?
There were also a few plot holes. It was eluding to Maddie being s*xually abused by her foster father? But then later on she says the only... ahem... peen she has seen was her husbands? And I think at one point she says she has only done anything sexually with her husband? It's minor... I know. But every time it came up it was just disappointing to have a plot hole that made me confused.
Also... plot hole. The guys live in New Jersey on pages 42 and 45. But later on they are in New York.
I read the blurb for this and was intrigued enough to forget that, in the past, I've never been able to get further than about a quarter of the way through Kerry Taylor's books. I was quickly reminded, though, why this author just isn't for me.
My biggest issue with this book was how repetitive it was. The book starts out giving us a pretty good idea of how bad life was for the MC. Then we get more into the story and learn that life hasn't improved much for her. Instead of moving on with the story, we're constantly reminded of everything she's been through and how she feels about it. This was nearly every other page if not at least once or twice per chapter. I might be exaggerating based on my annoyance with it, but it was often. It just seemed, to me, that everyone kept going in circles when they talked with her. Which annoyed me. And made me kind of dislike the MC.
Another issue I had was that the MC's daughter, Willow, was supposedly 3. Willow's behaviors and cognitive abilities exceeded her age. I was constantly thinking back to when my kids were that age and rolling my eyes because it just didn't fit. But whatever.
Also, the commas and run ons. Good goodness there were commas where there didn't to be and then commas missing from places where they should've been. One of the quickest ways to pull me out of a story is with misplaced and missing commas. (I've typed commas and inordinate amount of times in the last few seconds...ew) I hate having to stop and reread a sentence trying to figure out what exactly is being conveyed because the punctuation is off.
Other than all that, this story would have been really good, I think. Unfortunately, I couldn't get past it all and ended up just giving up on this book.
Maddie was abandoned by the the four guys she was attached to while in foster care. Jumping ahead thirteen years and she has a daughter and is in an abusive marriage. She calls her boss Nico to help her get away. Hunter, Kai and Cameron become a safe place to land for her and her daughter can she forgive them.
This was about second chances and grief and over coming the past. This book definitely has on page present tw’s that you should be mindful of. Willow helped kept some of the moments in this book lighter. There are also some grammer errors in the book but didn’t take away from the story.
The MMCs are precious, and the FMC is good. There were some instances where Maddie’s and Willow’s names are mixed up and some grammar/spelling issues that take you out of the book, but it’s a sweet book. I don’t typically cry when I read, but I sobbed during this book. I would definitely take the triggers at the end of the book into consideration. I read them ahead of time and wasn’t particularly concerned because they aren’t my triggers, but I still sobbed because of them.
This hit home as far as the loss in it, and I started to cry a bit because i understood. Love the story. Love the guys and the way the extended family came together. She is just too much. All about poor me. Wouldn't have been bad if she "grew a pair" at some point, but she didn't. I know she has been through things, but instead of fighting through it to be better, she was pitiful. Right up til the end.
This was a heartbreakingly good read. I loved that Nicco finally got his story. I love Maddie’s character. I love the guys as well. There is some triggering scenes so use caution if you have triggers and read the warnings. I can’t get enough of this authors works and can’t wait for me.
Couldn't get into this. Was put off by the awkward writing (characters frequently say the same thing two or three times, just rephrased), the passivity of the mother (keeping her baby around a father who openly hates their daughter and whom she knows her child fears), and the way the three year old spoke in complete and sometimes complex sentences. Might try again with the author some day though.
This was an excellent story, there was anger, sadness excitement and happy which is what this book was, I had tears running down my face reading this I could stop them between the sad & happy tears it’s was so much and I enjoyed every bit of this story it had everything in it all wrapped up in a not so neat bow but again we’ll worth the read… & the tears thank you once again Kerry
Fantastic but another difficult book to read did to the contents. I love Kerry's books, every single one if them. I love them despite the harsh things the characters have gone through because they always find a way through it.
✨ Check TW ✨ FMC on the run (pregnant and with a 3 year old daughter) ✨ Reverse Harem / Why Choose ✨ MFMMM ✨ Age Gap ✨ Childhood friends to strangers to lovers ✨ Second Chance ✨ Ex Military ✨ Grief ✨ Low Spice ✨ Emotional :(
To be honest, the only reason I pushed through was because I’m trying to reach a book goal by the end of the year and I refuse to cheat… The FMC drove me nuts though and most of it just felt cliche to me
This book wrecked me! I mean every emotion was gone through! I haven’t cried this hard at a book in a long time! Love these characters and story! One of my favorites!
I absolutely felt for these characters. I cried so much. I felt the loss and the trauma. The grief for the loss of a man she loved, when she didn't get to say goodbye. The emotional drop from this book is real.
I've been patiently waiting to read book 3. Kerry, you ended this series perfectly. I cried, don't get me wrong, it's a tear jerker. But oh my gosh! I loved it!
Really wish I paid more detail to the “reverse Harem ” bit in the blurb- honestly not really my cup of tea but it was a cute read just needed a few less love interests
Thoroughly recommend this author. All her series have strong characters & detailed plots. Genuinely cant put them down until I finish all the available books.
It was a really nice standalone RH to read. But I was definitely not ready to ball my eyes out 🥲 Please do check the TW because there are some difficult moments to pass if you’re sensitive.
5 STARS ⭐ didn't like/DNF ⭐⭐ was okay but I probably won't look for any sequels ⭐⭐⭐ it was good I'll likely read the next one ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was great and I'll definitely be looking for any sequels ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I loved it so much I'm adding it to my cart to buy paperback
-- As always, LOVED IT.
An absolutely beautiful story. I loved Maddie, she was rather realistic/relatable. Her trauma, the mindset, her healing path, the guilt she feels all of it is on point.
The guys are just 😍 and i love Nico finally got his story 🖤
The tension, the chemistry, the "aww" scenes are just on 🔥 and Willow is ADORABLE.
Now this one the fmc is pregnant the entire series, if you have any triggers towards anything regarding a pregnancy trope maybe check the TWs at the back of the book because she does experience some complications and then some. 5w
