Interesting read

While I found this book interesting and somewhat enjoyable, for me there was just something missing. I did like the story and the characters and am still trying to work out if Caden is some sort of Vampire. .......

The Uninvited (The Julianna Rae Chronicles 1) by Aral Beruex was a very interesting read. It was more than interesting; it was intriguing I would say. There are aspects that I truly loved and other aspects that I wanted more of. I loved the world that Aral’s vivid writing brought to life for me. I could picture the seediness of the sectors, the hover drones, the militias and the race for survival. I admit that I wanted more of a connection between C Mads and Julianna. I could see the attraction but I wanted to feel it more. But, being the first book in the chronicles it was a good set up to the wonderful world I am sure Aral will unfold more over her upcoming series. I keep waiting for Julianna to go more bad ass and unveil some awesome powers on the villains that kept hunting her, but that did not happen. However, I am intrigued to continue reading. and that is a good thing. I want to know how it ends, how Julianna’s journey progresses. I want to know if her father is Isis. What is her mother’s story? What will happen to Bas and Devo? Will Juliana and C Mads engage into a hot and steamy relationship? And, I am dying to know Taris’ story. So with this unending need in me to know more, Aral did a wonderful job in rousing my interest and hooking me to her world. I am purchasing Chronicles 2 now!

I have to admit that this genre (dystopian urban fantasy, with a sci-fi tone, right?) is not part of my usual reading preferences. But having discovered this incredibly powerful, gritty, brutal, engrossing and complex first volume in what looks to be a great series, I enjoyed (not quite the right word) following the plight and journey of Julianna Rae, the flawed and vulnerable yet highly effective and aggressive heroine.

I was plunged right into the action with the first sentence, and the micro viewpoint of this post-New World Order society only hinted at the macro viewpoint, which was initially disconcerting, but gradually the macro fell into place for me. And I was hooked for the duration and am looking forward to reading the next Chronicles.

When I found an "Index of Terms" at the end, a part of me wished I'd looked at that earlier on, but in retrospect, I think I prefer having to infer the macro from the implications the author sprinkled generously throughout the micro.

Highly recommended, five stars.

In a world where the one world order is coming into fruition, the watchers keep the old ways alive.
Julianne is a dancer, a sneak, and a courier. She is also the seer, though she doesn't know it.
Cade is her watcher, one who serves as her protector.
Tasiros is her ex fiance and an upcoming star in the owo. He wants her, in his bed or dead.

The problem is that she thinks she's a half caste. She doesn't want the watcher, though she's drawn to Cade. She's on the run from tasiros. She doesn't want to be his woman.

I'm not sure what genre I would consider this book. I bought it thinking it was science fiction but I'm not sure I would categorize it as such. I had a hard time figuring out exactly what was up with each of the characters. Even after finishing the book, I'm not entirely sure what a Watcher, a Walker, or a Seer is exactly. Or what an initiation involves. Or why they are sucking blood. They don't seem like vampires but maybe I've missed something. Perhaps all of these will be explained more in further books. I liked the action/survivalist parts of the story but I didn't connect with or feel for any of the characters. The poor protagonist gets put through the ringer and I can't quite figure out if those helping her are good, bad, or just self serving. At any rate, the story wasn't bad but I wasn't drawn in completely. I felt like I was on the outside looking in and trying to figure out from a distance what all was going on.

I love this story and am so ready to read more of this series. The characters are interesting and written well. The storyline is very good and keeps you guessing and wanting more. I look forward to reading the rest of this series and more from this author. Great job Aral for bringing your dystopian world to life for us to enjoy.

Great book! A few times I got lost with where things were going, but overall a fantastic plot that kept me on my toes! The author has a talented edge to her writing and I would love to read more books written by her.

This was a fascinating read...more so because I have never read a book from this genre (dystopia urban fantasy). It was well written and had me spellbound from page 1, so I had to buy book 2 immediately. It ended on a cliff-hanger note , so I need to know the final outcome.
