Great book on the natural springs and spas of Virginia and West Virginia. About 200 black and white illustrations / photographs of spings, spas, hospitals and other buildings / architecture built near natural springs. Some comparison photographs of the sites then and now. Illustrations of period artwork. History of the springs, tourism in the area, railroads to the springs. Includes bibliography. 202 pages. Measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Interesting book, nicely illustrated.
Niche for people like me who long for springs and their healing properties. Virginia in the 19th century was awash in healing springs and the folks that promoted them. Wellness looks much different now, but the theme is the same: here's the healing property, come and spend money to get well. Massive (by 19th century standards) hotels and out buildings popped up around the springs and a subculture of wealth and privilege followed. This book details who bought which springs and why they declined or were lost to time. The book is around 40 years old so I presume the evidences of these springs are further eradicated. Sad, for springs are a natural gathering place for calm and simpler pleasures. Great book for those of us who just need water for a great afternoon.
Outstanding collection of vintage pictures and history, covering familiar sites such as White Sulfur Springs, but including oscure springs throughout WV and VA. A must read for the spring enthusiast!
