Queen of the Exiled

Rate this book
The attacks of the Hollow have ceased, and Eliana has returned to her home in Meridium. Betrayal has filled her heart with rage after what happened in Tenebris, and she vows to fulfil her promise should Dracho ever return. The new emperor.

She resumes her duties as heir to the throne, thrust amongst those in court who see her as unworthy. But danger presents itself again when those blessed by the first mages return, and the Hollow resumes its path of chaos across the continent.

Working together again is the last thing she wants and his presence reveals temptation like she's never known. His merging and quest for revenge has changed who he is, and Eliana must align who she once knew with the unforgiving beast that now walks amongst her people. Dark secrets that have been at play for many years will come to light, changing the course of history for all.

As the unrest grows throughout Ruvalon, the rulers cling to what semblance of peace they have left, and the whisper of war grows stronger with every new bit of information they find. But as tragedy strikes, steeped in shadows and betrayal, Eliana experiences more torment than her worst nightmares could ever have given her.

Can Dracho save her in time? Can he save her from herself? Or will her determination to fight fate ensure their bond will remain ripped apart, dooming Ruvalon for the ages?

Only when they can see as one shall a shift in power rise.

Follow Eliana & Dracho as they are reunited in the explosive sequel to Prince of the Ancients. The Stag & Hollow Chronicles is an epic romantic fantasy series full of dragons, betrayal, swords & sorcery.

Gem L. Preston

Gem L. Preston is an international bestselling fantasy author from a small town in South Wales, where her love of video games and deep obsession with Welsh mythology collided to create Prince of the Ancients— and she hasn't stopped writing magical chaos since.

Her books are full of fierce heroines, morally grey men, shadowy magic, and slow-burn romantic tension that will emotionally ruin you (in the best way). Her characters are brave, bold, and brilliant — unlike Gem, who is terrified of moths and would much rather be hiding under a blanket with a cup of tea.

When she’s not writing (or *trying* to write while her two small daughters reenact a WWE match in the background), you’ll usually find her reading, gaming, or deep-diving into her favourite fandom theories. Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars, K-pop, and anime (yes, *Jujutsu Kaisen* owns her soul) — if there’s chaos and heartbreak involved, she’s probably already obsessed.

Gem has been living with IIH (a rare neurological condition) and a heart disorder for over a decade, and she’s passionate about raising awareness for chronic illness and invisible disabilities. She believes in building stories — and communities — where strength doesn’t always look like perfection.

I had the absolute honour of beta reading this and it's honestly one of the best books I've ever read.

QOTE is a truly exhilarating continuation of the story that had me on the edge of my seat and in awe throughout. Seriously, readers are in for a wild ride. My jaw dropped on multiple occasions!

A beautifully written second instalment brimming with action, magic, mental health and LGBTQ+ rep, romance, healing, and hope.

Also, that cover? STUNNING.

This book was everything I wanted and so much more. Eli's POV was everything. I loved Antares even more in this book and Dracho has my heart in a vice grip right now, the whole book does.

Phenomenally woven, spellbinding, and
rich with the story telling, the background, secrets being unhealed, truths coming to light. The tension, the romance was exquisite.

And the ending...that ending leaves you craving more, like a drug. I have to know what happens next. I am thrilled, s9 hyped for the next book and eagerly waiting for whenever it will be released. 💕🥰 I'm in love with the stories and the characters. One of the best books I've read this year and I can't wait for more.

IT IS 5:29AM AND I’M ON A NIGHT SHIFT TRYING NOT TO FREAK OUT.

I was super super grateful to get to read this as an ARC and it has not disappointed me. Everything about this was beautiful, heartbreaking, pulse rating (Gemma I swear you nearly topped me at points MY HEART RATE?!!!) and book 3 CANNOT COME QUICK ENOUGH.

Let’s talk about Eliana. She broke my heart in this book. You could tell she was in turmoil mentally and was struggling with everything she’d been through. It was refreshing reading about her, as there was no sugar coating her mental health. It felt raw and relatable and was beautifully written. Don’t get me wrong at times I just wanted to scream at her to forgive Dracho and just get on with it (and on him- also we will come back to this as I feel like I was ROBBED of the threesome) but at the same time I understood her apprehension to fully open up. Her torture was so well written and I really did squeal when Dracho found her as I LOVE the ‘who did this to you’ trope like YES GIVE IT TO ME.

Now, I am an Antares lover and apologist til the day I die and this book FED ME WELL. I adored Ant in this book and seeing him open up and show more of himself to Eliana was just beautiful to read, the twist with the 2 of them and Dracho I didn’t see coming but really brought everything to a head perfectly for me, it just all made sense!

And finally, Dracho. The man radiates confidence but on the inside you can clearly see he was hurting. Beautiful man, beautifully written (again) and let’s face it dark hair suits him more. The SPICE he brought in this book was next level and I was sat in work reading it trying to act calm because it was HOT.

The ending has also sent me into a rage and I need book 3 immediately. Thank you again for letting me read it early and I hope you enjoy hearing my wild theories for book 3 <3

Gemma has done it again! Despite forgetting some of the details from PotA, which left me a little confused at first, I was immediately drawn right back into the story. Secrets are revealed, pasts are uncovered, and the fate of Ruvalon hangs in the balance. It was hard to put this one down. And, Ant is still my favorite. Something about his moodiness just calls to me.

Eliana struggles throughout this story after the betrayal she experienced. I love her ability to articulate that, even if someone is genuinely sorry, your own feelings are still valid and you don’t have to forgive if you aren’t ready to. She is trying to protect herself. I will say, however, that after a while, she began to get on my nerves by censoring herself so much in this pursuit. I find the miscommunication trope so frustrating. That being said, Gemma did it beautifully and it fit into the story well.

If you’re a fan of dragons, found family, grumpy/sunshine, and fated mates, you’ll want to read this series.

A stunning continuation to this series. Queen of the Exiled picks up where Prince of the Ancients left off, but this story is carried with much more pace, so many plot twists, so much heat and intense emotion. I felt we got to know all of the characters so much better, particularly Antares. I liked to see the bond between him and Dracho in book 1, but their brotherhood was even stronger in this one. I also loved how he warmed to Eliana.
As for the POV change, I loved Eliana's perspective on things. She comes to light as a strong, yet deeply hurt character, and it was so good to see the world through her eyes. And when we did return to Dracho's POV, we got to see the softer side to him, the side of him that would do anything for the woman he loves.
I can't wait for the final installment of this epic fantasy series!

⭐4.5

I was so excited to receive an E-ARC of this book. I loved the first book but this one exceeded my expectations!

First of all if you like romance with lots of tension and longing this book is for you. I loved seeing the way Eli and Dracho progressed since book one. It was great to get a view into the past of some of the characters. I also really hope we get to see even more of Ant -I was surprised how much I grew to love him in this book his character has really grown on me. I also would like to see more of the fun loving side of Althea we didn't see in book one.

I won't say much about the plot since I abhor spoilers. I did have a little trouble with the first couple chapters but once the action started I couldn't put the book down. I am turning over a few moments from earlier on that I know will come up in book 3! The ending is the perfect type of cliff hanger just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat without emotionally destroying you.

I'll definitely be one of the first in line for book 3!

This book grabbed me by the neck and had me pinned at the edge of my seat the whole time! We dive right into the plot from the beginning! The amount of times I had to slam my phone down to catch my breath as a plot twist was thrown at me! BRILLIANT!!! Absolutely and utterly brilliant! I enjoyed every single chapter of it. Loved the different POVs along the way! (kinda missed Dracho's POV in the beginning haha)

Thank you so much to the author for an e-arc!

4.5⭐

I read this at work and had to wait until I came home to scream into a pillow and to be able just to calm down. Gemma, I'm just gonna say; you should expect my therapy bill sometime soon.

Book at the beginning is slow-paced, it took a while for the action to kick in and oh boy when it did! I had a lot of expectations from this book, and it delivered!

I'm gonna be honest and say that at times I found Eliana very infuriating because she refused to communicate with Dracho!! A lot of things could've been avoided, and we could've gotten to where we are earlier! I kept yelling at her to just talk to him, but she didn't listen...

I loved that we had multiple POV's in this book, and hope for even more in the future, and for them to be evenly dispersed between the characters so we get the story from multiple angles.

I loved the romance in this book so much! I just wish we had even more romance between side characters, but that's alright I'll be (im)patient and just wait for it in the next book.

I love Dracho with all my heart, his relationship with Ant, and other characters. He's my absolute favorite. No surprises there... (Dracho just existing, me; heart eyes). He went from being cocky to full on arrogant, and I lived for that personality change!

This book made me really fall in love with Ant (even if he was already my favorite), he had a super duper important role in this book and he slayed. Gotta love our morally grey, grumpy shape-shifter.

One thing that I'm still confused about is Dracho's partial transforming. Is that something he can now do because he's the Emperor because he had to fully transform when he was in the woods with Eli but was surprised at the end of POTE when scales covered his arms? But I'm super happy that we now get to see his wings often while also being able to see his pretty face!!

Had so much fun reading this, thank you again for the opportunity to read and review this early!

where’s my dragon to catch me off the cliffhanger

Wow… this book definitely was more in-depth and action packed from chapter 5 on… you do not have to wait long for it to take off… I am really trying to think of ways to write this without being MAJOR spoilers… so if you have started to read this and have been wanting to read this series. Stop ✋ right here…

Okay… so to continue on.. my thoughts feel a little jumbled so I am writing this as it comes to me. This book was not super spicy so be prepared if that’s what your looking for today 🤣 there is some VERY good scenes but it’s def plot over smvt… it was very well written, I know Gem has mentioned in the past she couldn’t wait to get to this book and I can see why! It’s so dang good!

I won’t lie our FMC Eli made me want to throat pvnch her a time or two with her being a martyr and not allowing herself the chance to love and be loved fully, I know her past trauma really affects her and her ability to open up but man I just wanted her to feel the warm and fuzzies that Dracho wants soooo badly to give to her! There is A LOT of loss in this book which broke my heart, but it also left me hanging on for dear life at the cliff hanger!!!

Now I’ll have to wait for a year for book 3….

Some of the troupes you will find in this book:
🐉 fated mates
🐉 I hate you- no wait I love you
🐉 found family
🐉 light spice
🐉 and HELLO dragons!!!

Before you read further please note Queen of the Exiled is Book Two in the Stag & Hollow series! Prince of the Ancients is available now— start there!

Okay, now. THIS BOOK. I was sucked in from the first page. I already knew from Prince of the Ancients I adored Gem’s writing but I was blown away by this book.

The characters are so fleshed out. The plot is action packed and keeps you guessing. The ANGST about did me in. This was the slow burn of the century but when it paid off, it PAID OFF 👏🏻

We follow our gang from book one as they hunt down mysteries of the Hollow. We’re introduced to some new characters and so many secrets become revealed. There are our beloved dragons, battles, heartbreak and loss… I could go on forever.

Also I can’t write a review without mentioning my favorite dragon shifter, Antares. We see so much more of him in this book and my obsession has reached an unhealthy level 😂

I won’t say much more as to not spoil anything but if you love classic fantasy with magick, mythical creatures, secrets and quests, lots of pining and tension…don’t hesitate to pick up these books!

Thank you Gem for this arc in exchange for my honest review!

We continue to follow our group in the search for the Hollow. There is much angst to be had in this book. Eli feels betrayed by the actions of Dracho, and at times it was difficult to read because I just wanted her to forgive him and move on, but I know that she had traumas to work through. Even with the betrayals she felt, they agreed to work together to find out who is controlling the Hollow.

I enjoyed the dual POV of this book, it was refreshing to see inside Dracho's mind and see even with his confident exterior, that he was having difficulty with his own actions and feelings. I liked getting more of Ant in this book. He was a favourite in the first book as well, but we saw so much more of his personality in this one.

This book was beautifully written, the characters were so fleshed out athat it felt like they were real to me. I enjoyed this book. The slow burn and angst had my anxiety at a high and the cliff hanger at the end? Oof. I can't wait for the third book to come out!

I received an arc of this book in return for my honest review.

"Your heart is the most valuable thing you own; when you give it to someone, you give them the power to hurt you."

"You can't save people form themselves. You can only try to wake them up"

I absolutely loved Prince of the Ancients and didn't think it could get any better, but apparently it can. I am now also confused on if I love Dracho or Antares more. The absolute depth of each character is incredible. You can't help but be drawn in to the story at every turn of the page. The overall plot is wonderful but what makes this story stick with me is the characters. They are so well developed. They live in my brain rent free and I wish I could spend a day with them all. I would recommend this book to any fantasy romance lover or someone who is looking for characters that you can not only fall in love with but relate to on a deeper level.

If you love dragons and fantasy and romance and fate, PLEASE READ THIS SERIES.

Oh my goodness. This book. It made me FEEL things. Mostly frustration and angst and confusion. But then also love and brimming emotion and SWOONING.

The slow burn, WHEW. Expertly done. Any declarations of love, NAILED IT. I wasn't always happy with the characters and their choices 👀 but I could not put it down once I hit that riveting second half.

The way I've grown to love and NEED these characters in my life in such a short time is wild, and speaks to Gem's ability to make her readers care.

Dracho. Dracho is. Mmm. Whimper. KAY. I already miss him.

And I loved getting under Eliana's armor and her POV here in book two. It hurt so good.

The ending battle scene was EPIC.

I got the honour of reading this as an ARC COPY 🤩

Gemma has done it again! This book is amazing 👏🏻
We see mainly Eliana's POV and we learn her story, her struggles with mental health and how she navigates the world of Ruvalon.
I can't tell you how much heartbreak is in this, how much frustration and love I felt for this characters and the spice 🌶🌶 I don't know how I'm supposed to wait for the next one.
Plot twists you don't see coming and ships you really wish for! (Waiting for that deleted scene Gemma 🫠)

I would like to thank Gem for the arc of Queen of the Exiled, book 2 in the Stag & Hollow Chronicles.

QofE takes place 6 months after the end of Prince of the Ancients. Eliana is still dealing with the trauma and pain of everything that went down in Tenebris. She no longer trusts Dracho but when he shows up to the ball celebrating the end of the Tain, the war that took the lives of Eliana’s mother and brother several years before, she struggles with effects he still has on her.
They soon discover that the Hollow is back and burning villages to the ground, so they cautiously agree to work together again to find out who is controlling this dark twisted magick. With all the emotions and distrust overwhelming Eliana, can she forgive Dracho for the pain he has cause her or are there some things that just can’t be forgiven?

This time around Gem gave us dual POV. I love that we get to see Dracho’s POV and it gives us more insight to what is behind some of his bravado. He puts on a mask for a lot of people, Eliana included, but underneath all of that sarcasm and cockiness, he is struggling with his own demons. There were so many moments my heart was breaking for him with the weight of his responsibilities, his new title and the grief that he never really dealt with. Seeing this side of Dracho made me fall even more in love with him.

Now Eliana, too, put on a mask to hide all the pain and grief she was going through but hers was a mask of anger, threats and denial. Her stubbornness and fear had me wanting to scream at her, but when characters draw out such strong emotions from the reader, it’s a true testament to how well developed they are. The complexity of her flaws and her unwillingness to change who she is at her core, force you to accept the good and the bad. The depths at which she feels everything and the way those emotions manifest are some of the best mental health representations I have ever read. She is broken but still fighting, knowing the path to healing isn’t linear.

My biggest surprise was how much more of Antares’ personality we saw. He was more closed off and kept to himself, always the observer in most situations in Prince of the Ancients, but in this book he shows us a little more of himself. Ant is still very private, and only allows a chosen few to get close to him but the connection he begins to form with Eliana was beautiful and in turn, we get glimpses of just how deep he loves those chosen few.

Bas, ever the huge teddy bear and constant support for Eliana, gives us the humour and laughs he’s known for. Vyn is equally as supportive but is also the voice of reason a lot of the time and seems to know what Eliana is actually feeling and thinking. Roux, although she decided to stay with Dracho to train and master her new powers, still has such a deep connection and respect for Eliana that she is able to be the devil’s advocate and see all sides for the benefit of everyone. They all have their moments of humour, vulnerability and strength, and their bonds with Eliana, Dracho and Ant are ones not of blood but of loyalty, love and trust of a family you choose. And lastly, we are finally graced with the presence of Althea. The female dragon shifter was a character I was excited to learn more about and she did not disappoint. She holds her own with Dracho and Ant and doesn’t put up with any of their nonsense. Althea is a badass but also has a huge heart proving that kindness and empathy aren’t weaknesses.

The reveals, twists and turns had my brain constantly working and immersed in the story. There are questions we get answers to from book one but in true Gem fashion, new questions have now replaced the old ones. Although I feel like this book was a little more character focused, there is still plenty of action, battles and rescues. The tension and angst from the slow burn built up until I almost couldn’t take it and then when the spice hit, I was kicking and screaming and melting. There were a few scenes(iykyk) that we weren’t treated to that I NEED and am praying we get in book 3 or, at the very least, some bonus chapters(hint hint) but Queen of the Exiled was more than I could’ve ever imagined it would be. And after that ending, waiting for the last book is going to be torture.

Perfect sequel!!
Before I get into the review, I’d love to mention a great feature of this book. In the first few pages, alongside the trigger warnings, is a recap of the first book! This is great as a summary if you haven’t read the first book for a while, or to simply gather your thoughts ready!
As a sequel, this story works beautifully, continuing along the same mystery and developing the world. Ms Preston truly excels in the writing of this book, very obviously growing as an author and gaining confidence in her work, it’s truly great to see.
In this book we get a perspective change, mainly progressing through the eyes of Eliana, occasionally gaining input from Dracho, the narrator of the first book. Ms Preston has artfully set this book some time after the first, allowing the story to progress at a natural pace, cutting out any idle time.
The romantic plot of this book is enemies to lovers, and Ms Preston has done this wonderfully. After the ending of the first book there are a lot of tensions between the characters, which she leans into, allowing the characters time to unravel their feelings and develop independently of any expected romance. Thus avoiding any reconciliations feeling rushed or insincere. When the characters do eventually reconcile, their interactions are incredible, with Ms Preston writing enthusiastic consent throughout. As part of my special interest, these interactions are the best written intimate scenes I’ve ever encountered!
A change in narrator for this book also allows us insight into a different kingdom, developing the world and providing intricate details that affect the characters’ motivations. The action also starts very early on in this book, hooking you instantly and inspiring intrigue! Ms Preston writes character development wonderfully, seeming to know exactly how much to give at each point, and writing realistic interactions that reflect each character’s personality. Her characters remain wonderfully diverse and dynamic throughout this story, giving amazing representation of many real life communities in a natural way.
The overall plot of this book is incredibly detailed and intricate, with many mysteries and plot twists, new characters and exploration of new locales. The main question from the first book still hasn’t been realised, but there has been excellent progression towards this, and I have a theory!!
Overall this is a wonderful story of growth and progression, with strong, complex characters. The representation throughout is wonderful, and the management of sensitive issues is handled expertly, healing some part of me. I cannot wait for the final book in this trilogy, and cannot commend this author highly enough for her tactful writing throughout, whilst providing an excellent fantasy story!

We were two stars colliding, and I felt like there would be no surviving it—only an endless emptiness left from the destruction.

Oh man, this book. I devoured this book. I snuck in reading time at every possible free moment, and when I wasn't reading, I ached to return. It brought me back to that love of reading we remember from middle school and high school, when the deepest love of a story and the feeling of being fully immersed blurs everything else to background noise.

Eliana is fierce and beautifully flawed, a complex character I absolutely adored living inside the mind of. I ached alongside her, grieved her losses, and now that I've parted with her rich perspective, I'm suffering a massive book-hangover.

Gripping from page one, this book is a roller coaster of emotion, from the highest highs that had me shrieking with glee, to the deepest despairs that punched a hole in my chest.

This book is journey of healing after trauma and grief. Of surviving when that's all you can manage, until one day you're ready to claim more for yourself, your days, your life, than merely surviving.

I don't want to head into spoiler territory, AND THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS I WANT TO SAY! But it's best to discover the story along the way, as Preston is a masterful storyteller, sprinkling hints and foreshadowing as she takes you on the journey of healing, of learning to trust again, and finding the strength to say, "I will not break."

How much pain is one person supposed to endure? Eliana literally found no peace after returning home to Meridium. She tries to resume her duties as heir to the throne but knows that she has large shoes to fill.

When the kingdom is under attack and the Hollow resumes its path of destruction Eliana is left feeling alone and full of rage. Everything she had ever loved; she lost. Noe her only hope if seeking revenge for the loss she has suffered is by aligning herself with the man who hurt and betrayed her before.

Dracho knows he hurt Eliana beyond repair. He knows she h8tes him, but he still has a deep need to be near her and seek her forgiveness for his beast won’t let him rest until he does.

Eliana went through so much pain in this story. She was still angry with Dracho for what he did to her, and she had no desire to forgive him but a small part of her still wanted to be with him. Danger surrounds Eliana at every turn and when tragedy strikes again, and she learns of her true lineage she is on the verge of giving up because what’s the point in fighting.

Now it's up to Dracho to put aside his hurt feelings of Eliana constant rejection and do what he knows must be done for the fate of their respective kingdoms and to save the women he loves even if she never forgives him and h8tes him until her dying day.

This book does end on a Cliffhanger.

There really isn’t many things better than a man grovelling 😌

If you like slower paced books. This is perfect as it has it all & the idea of the series is amazing!!!

I definitely liked the characters more in this book, we weren’t bombarded with more random side characters. I enjoyed some of the characters development. The FMC Eli was good in the first book but in this she dragged out so much of the ‘I can’t truth you with my heart’ it got boring.

We also had chapters and a couple of POVs which was actually very good for the structure.

However, this was just way too long. I got to the last few chapters and it dragggged! We had more action but it felt like things just happened for the sake of making the story longer

Book two kicks off with intensity when Dracho returns to Meridium to announce his father’s assassination and find the killer. But the Hollow is not the only threat to face in Ruvalon.

As with book one, the found family and romance are the heart of this story. I love the deep friendships of Eli, Bas, and Vyn. Eli is strong but incredibly vulnerable. It was nice to see more of Connaught in this book and his genuine care for Eli. Dracho’s raging emotions from merging with his dragon were balanced by Antares, Althea, and Roux. A fantastic cast of unique characters.

As Eli and Dracho tried to move past the betrayals of book one, the fire between them burned hotter and hotter. And Antares… oh I fell in love with him in this book.

So good! Can’t wait for more!

My heart ❤️... This story was a beautiful story of heartache, grief and acceptance all rolled into a fantasy book!! The strength from Eli throughout all that she faced and the support from Dracho and Ant and in fact everyone else when she was in her darkest moments.. there was tears, there was happiness, there was heartache and there was love... I can't wait to see what comes in the final installment!!

I couldn't put this book down, deserved every star. Even though I didn't read the first book, it was not a struggle to get pulled into the story. Especially since you were given details in short memory recalls or conversations that helped clear up any confusion or questions. The characters and world were built so well.

Absolutely amazing!! I have been waiting MONTHS for this book and Gem L Preston did not disappoint! It’s a must read for all my fantasy lovers. If you’ve read ACOTAR or Zodiac Academy this book is for you. Also, who doesn’t like a dragon shifter. 😉

A exciting sequel that was fast paced and full of twists and turns. Dracho, Eliana, Antaras, Vyn, and Das continue their journey to destroy the evil that is plaguing their kingdoms. With a strong mental health representation concerning tackling trauma and how it can affect relationships.
