This book actually includes 3 full length installments to The Dark Faerie Tale series as well as 2 extra novellas. **A free copy of this book was provided via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Evangeline(Evie)and Jade are sisters and both elemental witches. They share a mother but they have different fathers. Jade is human while Evie is part faery. Faeries can't live in the human world without experiencing side effects from the iron which is everywhere in the human world including homes. This brings the girls closer to faery. Evie must venture into Faery to relieve these headaches while Jade waits close by in the woods. They both meet strangers in the woods which lead them down two very different paths.
At the beginning of Evershade we meet Shade. She is Jade's half faery, half human daughter. Since Jade's memory was erased Shade doesn't know she is fey. She knows she is different and can do things other people can't but she doesn't know why. The voices in her head guide her to Jack who takes her to the land of faery where she meets the Oracle Ilarial and other fey who will help her on her journey.
This was a huge amount of information since it did contain 3 full sized novels and 2 novellas. The books surprised me because I'm not normally a fey fan but I have to give credit to Alexia Purdy. The magic and world building in this series was very good. It's always a a sign of a good writer when you can see a world in your head that doesn't really exist.
Shade was a likable heroine that had to battle to save the human world. Some of the character development in this series was great. I did find that the story was a little flat and boring at times and I had a hard time staying engaged. The story got better the further you go into the series.
For someone who is normally not a fey fan I really enjoyed this series. I kept reading to see what Purdy could come up with in the fantasy world. I will say one of my favorite things was the spell the oracle placed on Shades backpack. I know I'm entertained by the simplest of ideas but I wouldn't mind having one of those spell bound bags myself. I'm glad I was given the opportunity to read this series and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the fey world.
